What's the difference between I am doing something  and I have been doing something?

In this lesson, we're going to review the difference between Present Continuous (I am doing),

and, Present Perfect Continuous (I have been doing).

Okay! let's start with Present Continuous (I am doing).

Va bene! iniziamo con Present Continuous (lo sto facendo).

We use the Present Continuous tense (I am doing, he is doing they are doing)

Usiamo il Present Continuous (io sto facendo, lui sta facendo loro stanno facendo)

for actions in progress or temporary situations.

per azioni in corso o situazioni temporanee.

For example: I'm currently working from home.

Ad esempio: attualmente sto lavorando da casa.

Some common time expressions for this tense are currently, now, at present, at the moment, etc.

Alcune espressioni temporali comuni per questo tempo sono attualmente, ora, al presente, al momento, ecc.

So, what about Present Perfect Continuous?

Allora, che dire del Present Perfect Continuous?

We have been doing, she has been doing, etc.

Noi abbiamo fatto, lei ha fatto, ecc.

We use this tense for an action that started in the past  and continues in the present.

Usiamo questo tempo per un'azione che è iniziata nel passato e continua nel presente.

For example:  I've been working from home for one month.

Ad esempio: lavoro da casa da un mese. Le

Common time expressions for this tense are 'for', which is plus the length of time.

espressioni temporali comuni per questo tempo sono "for", che è più la durata del tempo.

'Since', which is plus the start point of the action.

"Da", che è più il punto di inizio dell'azione.

And also, expressions like 'all day' or 'this week' etc.

Inoltre, espressioni come "tutto il giorno" o "questa settimana" ecc.

A common question I get is: Are these two tenses interchangeable?

Una domanda comune che ricevo è: questi due tempi sono intercambiabili?

For example, can we say: I am working from home for one month or since April.

Ad esempio, possiamo dire: lavoro da casa per un mese o da aprile.

That is using the Present Continuous with 'for' and 'since'.

Cioè usando il Present Continuous con 'for' e 'since'.

No! This is a mistake.

NO! Questo è un errore.

If you use time expressions like 'for', 'since', 'all day', etc.,

Se utilizzi espressioni temporali come "per", "since", "tutto il giorno" e così via,

you must use Present Perfect Continuous:

devi utilizzare Present Perfect Continuous:

I have been working from home for one month or since April.

lavoro da casa da un mese o da aprile. E

What about the other way around?

il contrario?

Can we say: I have been working from home?

Possiamo dire: ho lavorato da casa?

So, using Present Perfect Continuous without mentioning how long.

Quindi, usando Present Perfect Continuous senza menzionare per quanto tempo.

And the answer is...

E la risposta è...

Yes you can!

Sì, puoi!

If you don't know how long or you don't want to mention it,

Se non sai per quanto tempo o non vuoi menzionarlo,

you can use this tense to indicate that the  action has continued for some time.

puoi usare questo tempo per indicare che l' azione è continuata per un po' di tempo.

If you want, you can add the expressions 'for a while' or 'for some time'. But, you don't have to.

Se vuoi, puoi aggiungere le espressioni "per un po'" o "per un po' di tempo". Ma non devi.

You can just say: I have been avoiding coffee.  Or: she has been thinking of quitting her job.

Puoi semplicemente dire: ho evitato il caffè. Oppure: ha pensato di lasciare il lavoro.

Right! There is one special case I need to mention to you, and that is when we use the Present Perfect Continuous without 'for' or 'since'

Giusto! C'è un caso speciale che devo menzionarti, e cioè quando usiamo il Present Perfect Continuous senza 'for' o 'since'

for an action that has just finished with an undesirable effect in the present.

per un'azione che è appena terminata con un effetto indesiderato nel presente.

For example:  Why are your eyes red? Have you been crying?

Ad esempio: Perché i tuoi occhi sono rossi? Hai pianto?

Or, someone may say: Why are your clothes wet? And the answer can be: I've been washing the car.

Oppure qualcuno potrebbe dire: perché i tuoi vestiti sono bagnati? E la risposta può essere: ho lavato la macchina.

You're not washing the car anymore. You've just stopped.

Non lavi più la macchina. Hai appena smesso.

But now the effect is that your clothes are wet.

Ma ora l'effetto è che i tuoi vestiti sono bagnati.

And one last thing. As always, watch out for State Verbs.

E un'ultima cosa. Come sempre, fai attenzione ai verbi di stato.

A State Verb describes a mental or emotional state or a fact.

Un verbo di stato descrive uno stato mentale o emotivo o un fatto.

Make sure you don't put a State Verb in a Continuous tense.

Assicurati di non inserire un verbo di stato in un tempo continuo.

For example, take the verb 'have'.

Ad esempio, prendi il verbo "avere".

'Have' can replace 'eat', which makes it an Action Verb.

"Have" può sostituire "eat", il che lo rende un verbo d'azione.

For example, you can say: I'm having lunch now.  Or: I have been having lunch for 10 minutes.

Ad esempio, puoi dire: sto pranzando ora. Oppure: sto pranzando da 10 minuti.

But the real meaning of 'have' is to own, which is now a State Verb.

Ma il vero significato di "avere" è possedere, che ora è un verbo di stato.

And now you cannot use a Continuous tense with this verb.

E ora non puoi usare un continuo con questo verbo.

You cannot say: I am having a headache.

Non puoi dire: ho mal di testa.

You can only say: I have a headache.

Puoi solo dire: ho mal di testa.

And, you cannot say: I have been having a headache all day.

E non si può dire: ho avuto mal di testa tutto il giorno.

You need to say: I have had a headache all day.

Devi dire: ho avuto mal di testa tutto il giorno.

Right! Let's finish by putting these two tenses together in a dialogue:

Giusto! Finiamo concludendo questi due tempi verbali in un dialogo:

What are you doing?

cosa stai facendo?

I'm repairing my bicycle.

Sto riparando la mia bicicletta. Da

How long have you been doing that?

quanto tempo lo fai? L'

I've been doing it all morning.

ho fatto tutta la mattina.

Are you thinking of selling it?

Stai pensando di venderlo?

No, I think it's too old to sell.

No, penso che sia troppo vecchio per venderlo.

Notice that in the question, the verb 'think' is an Action Verb.

Nota che nella domanda il verbo "pensare" è un verbo d'azione.

It's about are you thinking now of doing this thing.

Si tratta di pensare ora di fare questa cosa.

Whereas, in the answer 'think' is a State Verb, which means I believe it's my opinion.

Considerando che, nella risposta "pensare" è un verbo di stato, il che significa che credo sia la mia opinione.

And therefore, it's not in the Continuous form. It's in the Simple form.

E quindi, non è nella forma continua. È nella forma semplice. Da

How long have you owned it?

quanto tempo lo possiedi?

I've had it for three years.

Ce l'ho da tre anni.

And now, both the verbs 'have' and 'own' are State Verbs.  So, you do not see the Continuous tense anymore.

E ora, entrambi i verbi 'avere' e 'possedere' sono verbi di stato. Quindi, non vedi più il tempo continuo.
