WOMEN vs. WOMAN Pronunciation

Today is March 8th - International Women's day.

오늘은 3월 8일 - 세계 여성의 날입니다.

And I figured it would be the perfect day to discuss the difference

그리고 나는

between a 'woman' and 'women'.

'여자'와 '여자'의 차이점에 대해 토론하기에 완벽한 날이 될 것이라고 생각했습니다.

One woman - a few women, or many women.

한 여성 - 소수의 여성 또는 많은 여성.

And if you're watching it not on March 8th, then it doesn't matter

그리고 3월 8일에 시청하지 않는다면 상관없습니다.

because every day is women's day.

매일이 여성의 날이기 때문입니다.

So let's get started.

시작하겠습니다.

Woman - women.

여자 - 여자.

Let's begin with a singular form - woman.

여성이라는 단수형으로 시작해 봅시다.

We start with a w sound, so round your lips and then open it up

w 소리로 시작하므로 입술을 동그랗게 만든 다음

to an 'u' as in 'good' - 'woh'.

'good' - 'woh'처럼 'u'까지 벌립니다.

You see, so my lips open up a little bit, but they're still a bit rounded.

내 입술이 약간 열리지 만 여전히 약간 둥글다.

The jaw drops - woh - the tongue pulls back.

턱이 떨어집니다 - 와우 - 혀가 뒤로 당겨집니다. 입

And it's kind of relaxed in the back, think like you have a hot potato

뒤쪽에 뜨거운 감자가 있고

in the back of your mouth and you don't want to touch anything: woh.

아무 것도 만지고 싶지 않은 것처럼 생각해보세요. 와우.

And then you move on to the second syllable, which is m'n, m'n.

그런 다음 두 번째 음절인 m'n, m'n으로 이동합니다.

It's an M sound, a schwa - a reduced vowel, and then an N:

M 소리, 슈와 - 축소 모음, 그리고 N:

m'n, m'n, woh-m'n, woh-m'n.

m'n, m'n, woh-m'n, woh-m'n입니다.

The plural form is different than the spelling at the end of the word.

복수형은 단어 끝의 철자와 다릅니다.

Right?

So instead of 'a' you have 'e', but it affects the pronunciation

오른쪽?

따라서 'a' 대신 'e'가 있지만

of the first syllable.

첫 음절의 발음에 영향을 미칩니다.

Now why is that?

왜 그럴까요?

I have no idea, but that's just how it is.

나는 잘 모르지만 그것이 바로 그 방법입니다.

So, instead of saying woh-m'n, we now say wi-m'n.

따라서 woh-m'n이라고 말하는 대신 이제 wi-m'n이라고 합니다.

All right?

It's the 'i' as in 'sit' vowel sound.

괜찮은?

'앉다' 모음 소리에서와 같은 'i'입니다.

So from the W you switch to the 'i' sound - 'wi'.

그래서 W에서 'i' 소리로 전환합니다 - 'wi'.

And then again, the ending is exactly the same - m'n, m'n.

그리고 다시 말하지만 결말은 완전히 똑같습니다 - m'n, m'n.

woh-m'n - wi-m'n.

woh-m'n-wi-m'n.

One woman - a few women.

한 여성 - 몇 명의 여성.
