Now, in this lesson, I'm going to test your knowledge

of verb patterns in English.

If you don't know what a verb pattern is,

I highly recommend firstly going through this

because you'll understand what it is after the lesson.

So, this is how it's gonna work.

I'm going to read a question,

and you have to complete the verb

based on what verb goes before it.

So this is verb patterns.

It's a really important element of English,

especially if you want

to increase your accuracy when speaking.

And then, at the end of this, please let me know

in the comments section how well you did,

tell me how many you got right,

and which ones you got wrong.

Are you ready for number one?

Here it is.

I bloody hate something my taxes, and use the verb to do.

I bloody hate something my taxes.

Three, two, one,

it is doing.

I bloody hate doing my taxes.

Now this word, bloody, is informal in British English,

and I made a lesson on five British English expressions.

Again, I'll leave the link in the description.

But this really just emphasizes, it gives it more strength.

I bloody hate doing my taxes.

It gives it more emphasis, makes it stronger.

And you'll notice, we really put the emphasis

on this when we speak.

I bloody hate doing my taxes.

So, it's doing.

Now, when we have things like hate and love and like,

you can use sometimes the infinitive to do,

and sometimes the gerund.

This is a gerund, ing.

I bloody hate doing my taxes.

And just to say, in this case, it is the ing form.

Now, in America, you have to do a lot of work

to get your taxes completed on time,

so a lot of people say this.

Although, in America, they wouldn't use bloody,

they'd use something else.

Let me know what you think that is.

Number two, my parents never something me stay up late.

My parents never something me stay up late.

Complete this one with the verb to let.

Three, two, one, my parents never let me stay up late.

So, this is an example of a verb pattern

that doesn't have the full infinitive or the gerund.

Instead, we just use that base form.

My parents never let me stay up late.

Another example of this is make,

make me do it, make me do it.

Or, you can say, let me do it, let me do it.

So, this one sometimes is a little bit tricky,

but again it's an important part here

to know that we don't use to let, or letting.

My parents never let me stay up late.

That's not true in my case.

Number three, I don't something playing football.

Is this enjoy or want?

I don't something playing football, enjoy or want.

Three, two, one,

it is enjoy.

So, after the verb enjoy, we always use the gerund.

I don't enjoy playing.

I enjoy doing it.

I enjoy making these lessons.

I enjoy standing up when teacher.

Always the gerund, the ing form, after the verb enjoy.

And we know we have to use enjoy

because the gerund, right here.

Number four, he's finally stopped something,

and use the verb to smoke.

He's finally stopped something, use the verb to smoke.

Three, two, one, he's finally stopped

smoking.

He's finally stopped smoking.

So this means he's finally quit smoking,

he's given up smoking.

And, when we use the gerund form,

that's how we use it, to stop doing something.

Now, sometimes after the verb stop,

we can use the infinitive, and this has a different meaning.

And an example people like to give is,

I was driving and stopped to answer the phone.

I was driving and stopped to answer the phone.

So this means you stop to do something else.

But, in this case, he's finally stopped smoking,

it means he's finally given up smoking.

Number five, this one I see a lot of mistakes,

so think about this a little bit.

I want you something it.

I want you something it.

Use the verb to do.

Three, two, one, I want you

to do it.

I want you to do it.

So, this might sound strange if you translate this

into your native language, especially if you're from Spain

or South America and speak Spanish.

But this is how we say this in English.

I want you to do it, I want Paul to do it,

I want her to do it.

So this is the whole structure of the sentence.

And going back to this example,

I don't want to play football.

I don't want to play football.

So, after want, we have to do.

But then, if we use a word like this, you, Paul, me,

et cetera, we still use the verb to do,

the infinitive after this.

And a good way to remember this, or to internalize it,

is to get lots of sentences that use want

and then the infinitive,

and then use the repetition method to learn this.

And I'll leave a link to that method in the description.

Let's go to number six,

I remember something there as a kid.

Use the verb to go.

I remember something there as a kid, the verb to go.

Three, two, one, I remember

going there as a kid.

I remember going there as a kid.

So this is a memory you have of the past.

I remember going there as a kid.

For example, I remember going to Niagara Falls

when I was seven.

And this is just used for any type of memory in the past.

I remember doing something.

A good example, as well, is to say,

I don't remember locking the door.

I don't remember locking the door before we left.

This is when you doubt your memory.

You think, did I lock the door or not?

I don't remember locking the door when we left.

I don't have the memory of this.

Now, speaking of locking the door, number seven.

Remember something the door, and use the verb to lock.

Remember something the door, and use the verb to lock.

Three, two, one, remember to lock the door.

Remember to lock the door.

So this isn't a memory.

Instead, it's using that imperative command,

remember to lock the door.

So, don't forget to lock the door

is another way of saying it.

So, it just depends when we are using the verb remember,

what you want to say, what you want to get across,

if you're going to use going or to lock.

And there are a few of these in English.

For example, stop is one.

Stop to do it, stop doing it.

They have a different meaning

depending on which one that you use.
