and in this English lesson we are going

to look at the phrasal verb: make up for;

make up for because Maria sent in this

question: Hi, I came across the phrase

'something makes up' for. Does it mean

something is worth doing? What's

interesting is that Maria uses a phrasal

verb to ask this question; she actually

uses the phrasal verb: come across and

this means to find by chance but we're

not going to talk too much about that

one because our focus is on the phrasal

verb make up for and this means to take

the place of something lost or damaged

or to compensate for something bad with

something good. Now, to help you

understand this, imagine that I forget my

wife's birthday. So, I wake up and I don't

say happy birthday to her and she's

angry at me and I don't know why and

then she tells me that I have forgotten

her birthday so what I do is I go out to

the shops, I buy her a lot of expensive

jewelry, perfume, and other stuff that she

likes and then I give it to her and I

say the following: I hope this makes up

for forgetting your birthday. I hope this

makes up for forgetting your birthday. So,

I'm trying to use these expensive

presents as compensation for forgetting

her birthday - replacing something bad

with something good. Here are some more

examples: sales this month have made up

for last month. Sales this month have

made up for last month.

So, sales this month have been good and

they have compensated for the bad sales

last month. This is something you might

say at work: I'm working extra hard to

make up for the time I've missed. I'm

working extra hard to make up for the

time I've missed. You might also say this

about English class too. And here's a sad

example: the insurance money will never

make up for it and you're talking about the

death of a family member. The insurance

money will never make up for it. Maria

asked if this phrasal verb means if it's

something worth doing if it's similar to

that and it's not - if something is worth

doing, it means there's a good enough

reason to do it, for example, I might say

it's worth coming to Asheville on your

vacation because there's a good enough

reason or there are good enough reasons

to come here for your vacation, so it's

definitely worth coming here to enjoy

yourself. So, what I want you to do now is

to leave an example using the phrasal

verb below: to make up for something, so

just give me a good example from your

life or from anything and this is a way
