Advanced English Listening Practice: I GOT SICK 🤒 (Learn Vocabulary Related to Sickness)

I just couldn't get out of bed. Hello,

this is Jack from tofluency.com and this

English lesson is going to give you some

fantastic listening practice and you're

also going to learn words and phrases

related to sickness. Yesterday, I had to

cancel my live lesson. If you don't know,

I go live on YouYube every Wednesday at

1-:30 but i had to cancel

yesterday's lesson because i couldn't

get out of bed. I knew I was coming down

with something on Tuesday night

because I started to get a stomachache

and I had really low energy and normally

I'm full of energy and when I start to get

low energy, I know something is going to

happen. And then, on Wednesday, I woke up

with a fever. I knew i was sick. I tried

to get up but I felt really weak - my legs

felt weak i had a headache, I had a sore

back, and I just felt really hot and

sick, you know, that feeling when you're

just sick and you know you're sick. So, I

canceled the lesson and I just thought,

okay, I have to get better.

What's really surprising is that today I

feel great. In fact, i had a nap in the

afternoon, i woke up really sweaty.

I woke up - I was wet through - I was so

sweaty, but I felt so much better. I had

about two or three hours after taking

some painkillers and I just felt so much

better, and I wasn't sure if I was going

to wake up fully recovered today but

luckily, I have. I'm still a little bit warm but

generally I feel great and I've got lots

of energy. But while i was in bed

yesterday,

it reminded me of the time I got typhoid.

That's right, I got typhoid, probably, in Colombia but maybe in Ecuador.

Now, I had just spent about 10 days in Colombia. I went

back to the hostel - the language school -

where I was staying and within about a

day or two I just started to feel

terrible. I remember it was a Wednesday

it was a Wednesday evening and we were

watching film and I just started to feel

ill - I just started to feel sick - so it

was about 7 30 and i said: I have to go

to bed, I just feel terrible. I went to

bed and then, for the next 48 hours, I

stayed in bed or I was sick or I had a

little bit of water and I had other

symptoms as well, but I just felt

terrible. I felt awful and I couldn't get

out of that bed for about 48 hours. So, then

I talked to the hostel owner and I said:

listen, I need help.

I don't know what's wrong with me, you

know, my friends didn't know where I was.

They thought i had left the hospital

because I was in my room all this time.

But I needed help so I went to the

hospital.

We found a doctor who could speak really

good English because my Spanish at that

time was terrible and she ran some tests -

she did some tests and she said: okay,

we're not a hundred percent certain but

I'm very positive that you have typhoid.

It's important to know that before my trip

I had some shots. I had some vaccines but

apparently, as the doctor explained, they

don't give you a hundred percent

coverage so, in my case, they didn't

really help because I got typhoid. So, I

was prescribed some antibiotics and it

took me about two weeks before I had the

energy to do anything really. I just

stayed in the hostel, I Skyped my then

girlfriend who is now my wife and in a

strange way me getting typhoid is one of

the big reasons why we are still

together because it meant that I wasn't

traveling on my own doing other things.

We had just met in the language school

in that hostel a few weeks earlier and

because I was so sick she was concerned

which meant that we talked on skype

which meant that we kept our

relationship going.

But anyway, I lost so much weight during

this time

and a friend came to visit me in Peru, so,

about two three weeks after getting

typhoid and after recovering, I went to

Peru. But I had lost so much weight and I was so

hungry. I remember ordering just plain

pasta - huge bowls of pasta - and eating the

entire bowl and then getting something else and

then something else, so, I ate so much

during the two or three weeks in Peru

and then after that time, I actually went

back to visit Kate in and Athens, Georgia

where she was at the time, and she didn't

recognize me when I came off the

airplane, she didn't recognize who I was

because I had lost so much weight. But 10

days in America - eating burgers, drinking

some beer, really helped me.

Luckily, I didn't really get sick in a

big way again for the rest of my travels

in South America but getting Typhoid was

was bad. I'm just really grateful that I

managed to find the hospital and a doctor

who could help me overcome this sickness

and that it didn't affect me too badly.
