Do the Shopping vs Go Shopping: Explanation and Examples

Hello, everybody, this is Jack from To Fluency with a short English lesson that's going to

look at the phrase "do the shopping." And I'm actually going to compare this phrase

to another that's quite similar that's going to help you understand the difference between

the two.

Now, I used this phrase in a video that I put on Facebook, so let's have a look at that

video now.

"Hello, this is Jack from To Fluency. I'm just about to do the shopping. How often do

you do the shopping? Let me know!"

So, in the video, I said the following, "Hello, this is Jack from To Fluency. I'm just about

to do the shopping. How often do you do the shopping? Let me know!"

So, in this situation, do the shopping means to buy food. Now, it can also be specific

to something else, for example, if you're in an office, you can say, "I'm going to do

the shopping this week" if it's buying supplies or buying something for the office. But generally

speaking, we use it the most when we're talking about groceries or food. So, that's why I

said, I'm just about to do the shopping.

Now, we can compare this to the phrase - go shopping - which is more general, and that

can mean shopping for anything. And usually, as well, it means it's a little bit more fun,

because "do the shopping" is like a chore; something we have to do, whereas "go shopping"

is more like an activity, a fun activity.

So, let's have a look at more examples now: We need to do the shopping today; let's go

shopping this afternoon; I always do the shopping at the weekend.
