Relaxed Pronunciation: Master This to FINALLY Understand Native English Speakers

Now in this lesson we're going to look at 10 examples

of relaxed pronunciation, okay.

Relaxed pronunciation and this is

very common in everyday English

and not knowing these sentences

and similar sentences to the ones we're going to go through

might be one of the number one reasons

why you find it difficult to understand movies,

to understand TV shows, and to understand native speakers

when they are speaking at their normal pace.

So, what I want you to do in this lesson

is to think about what these sentences are

when they are constructed correctly,

and then also to repeat after me.

Now, when you speak in English, you might not want

to talk in this way.

You might not want to use relaxed pronunciation

and in fact, if in doubt, don't do it

because it can be seen as informal.

Especially if you're in an interview or an exam,

they aren't looking for you to use this type of speech,

but practicing it, means that you'll be able

to understand it when people use it.

So just getting that kind of practice, kinda practice,

means that you are going to be more open

to this and understand when people speak.

So, we're gonna go through 10 examples here.

I'm gonna look at lots of different examples related to this

and also, I'm going to talk about how you might

want to use this in everyday English.

Okay, so, let's get started with number one,

and number one is really common.

I kinda wanna.

I kinda wanna.

So I'm giving you two for one here.

But this is the one, wanna,

is very common in spoken English.

So just repeat after me:

I kinda wanna go.

I kinda wanna go.

This is common.

I kinda wanna go.

So kinda is kind of and that in itself is quite informal.

I kind of want to do it.

But when you say, I kinda wanna,

then this becomes more informal.

Now a similar one to wanna is gonna.

Okay, gonna.

Wanna, want to, gonna, going to.

I'm gonna wanna go soon.

I'm gonna wanna go soon.

Now that might sound strange to you

but people do speak in this way.

I'm gonna wanna go soon.

I'm gonna wanna go soon.

Okay, that's the first one and just to note

I'll leave some more examples in the description below.

Okay, the next one: didja do it?

Didja do it?

Didja do it?

Didja, didja.

Again this is common, didja do it,

and it just means did you.

Did you do it?

Didja do it?

So repeat that one, didja do it?

Good, number three: I shoulda.

I shoulda done it.

I shoulda done it.

Now this is an interesting one because this is taking

should have and lot of the time you might see

the contracted form as should've, should've.

But this turns into shoulda, I shoulda.

And there's a great song here that will help you with this

which is called Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda.

Beverley Knight, Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda.

And this actually teaches you

how to use these modal verbs, should have, could have,

and would have because the lyrics are all about

what this actually means.

But shoulda, this is again, it's common.

I coulda, I coulda done it.

I coulda done it, I woulda done it, I woulda done it.

Should have, could have, would have,

shoulda, coulda, woulda.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

Now it's important at this point as well

to say that when you're writing, don't write like this.

This just represents how to say these words

when we're using relaxed pronunciation.

The next one: hafta.

I hafta do it.

I hafta do it today.

I hafta do it today.

This is relaxed pronunciation for have to.

I have to do it.

But again, in everyday English, we often use hafta, hafta.

Didja, wouldja.

Wouldja do it?

Wouldja do it?

Wouldja do it?

Wouldja, so you probably know what this one is, would you.

Would you do it, wouldja.

Now at this point I also want to point out

that we're also linking words together

and I'm gonna make a video on this soon

but this is where we take two words

and it sounds like it's one word.

Wouldja do it, wouldja do it?

So this links to this, this links to this.

Wouldja do it, wouldja do it, wouldja do it.

Not would you do it, wouldja do it.

So you can see when you're watching a TV show and it,

or a movie and someone says wouldja do it,

it can be quite confusing to know what they mean

when they say it and to pick up on those sounds

and to understand what they're saying.

That's why, again, it's important to know this

so that you can understand when people speak in this way.

Wouldja do it, wouldja do it.

Okay, moving over here.

D'ya wanna?

D'ya wanna?

D'ya wanna go?

D'ya wanna?

And this is do you, do you wanna.

So again, we're using two words

that are linking together and they're both

using this relaxed pronunciation too.

D'ya wanna, d'ya wanna, d'ya wanna,

d'ya wanna.

Put a little question mark there, d'ya wanna.

D'ya wanna go?

D'ya wanna do it later?

D'ya wanna come to the office today?

I just asked my wife that.

D'ya wanna come to the office today?

D'ya wanna come, d'ya wanna come?

Okay, number seven, this one.

I dunno.

I dunno.

I dunno if I wanna do it.

I dunno if I wanna do it.

I dunno.

I don't know.

I don't know.

But again, you get shortened to this: I dunno.

Now, we had a song here, Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda,

we've got a couple of songs here, gimme.

Rolling Stones have Gimme Shelter

and ABBA, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme A Man After Midnight,

I think are the lyrics.

I'll leave links to the songs below, I'm not gonna sing.

But, gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight.

Gimme, give me.

Give me.

So you'll hear people say things like gimme some time.

Gimme some time.

Gimme.

This one is super common, whatcha.

Whatcha doing?

Whatcha doing later?

Whatcha doing this weekend?

Whatcha doing right now?

Whatcha doing, whatcha doing?

And this is what are you doing.

This one is really condensed.

What are you doing?

Whatcha doing?

Whatcha doing?

So I like this one.

Okay, last one:

Doncha.

A very popular song, 10 years ago I think.

Doncha wish.

Don't you, Doncha Wish Your Girlfriend was Hot Like Me.

(laughing)

Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me.

Doncha, don't you, don't you.

Again, this gets contracted to doncha, doncha.

So there are a lot of these examples.

There are many more of these examples here

where people in everyday English

use this relaxed way of speaking.

And again, it is common.

You are going to hear it if you go

to an English speaking country.

You're going to hear it if you watch a TV show

or a movie, so I definitely recommend that you learn these,

that you practice them, and that you try to recognize them

when you hear them, when you're watching TV shows

or movies or listening to podcasts.
