Just the other day, I was having this casual coffee chat

with a friend and he asked me,

"Am I going to be replaced by AI?

I don't want to go back to school to learn new skills, I'm 40.

학교로 돌아가서 새로운 기술을 배우고 싶진 않아, 이제 불혹인데.

And even if I do, won't employers prefer to hire someone half my age?"

내가 배운다 쳐도, 고용주들은 젊은 애들을 고용하고 싶지 않을까?”

I mean, I get his concern

뭐, 그 걱정 이해 돼요.

and I have many other friends and clients who’ve been asking me similar questions.

다른 친구들과 고객분들도 다들 비슷한 질문을 하더라고요.

To be very honest, sometimes I worry about it too.

진짜 솔직히 말하자면 저도 가끔씩 걱정돼요.

You see, I'm a consultant and consultants like me are famous,

전 컨설턴트인데 저 같은 컨설턴트들은

길고 깊이 있고 완성도 높은 발표 자료를 만드는 걸로

or some of you may even say infamous, for creating these extensive,

deeply researched, well-polished slide decks.

유명, 아니 악명이 높죠.

But you know what?

하지만 우리는 이런 능력에 자부심이 아주 대단하답니다.

We take great pride in this ability.

But what took us days and sometimes weeks in the past

그런데 예전에는 며칠, 때론 몇 주가 걸렸던 작업을

can now increasingly be done in a matter of hours, thanks to AI.

이제는 인공 지능 덕분에 몇 시간 만에 끝낼 수 있습니다.

And well, this sort of thing is happening all over the economic landscape.

그리고 이런 일은 경제 분야 전반에서 일어나고 있습니다.

One in every three workers globally

전 세계 근로자 3명 중 1명은

will find their jobs significantly impacted

due to technology in this decade.

And that's not just bank tellers, factory workers and warehouse staff,

but executive managers and office workers too.

You and me and all of us.

That's going to be more than one billion people impacted.

And companies can't hire their way through this problem.

Firstly, there just isn't enough talent in growing areas such as data science,

cybersecurity or clean energy.

And even if companies managed

Two and a half years, if you’re working in technology.

This is what we call the half life of skills.

The only solution is to reskill millions of people every year

이걸 해결할 방법은 매년 수백만 명을 재교육하고

and get them to use those new skills to transition into new occupations.

그들이 새로운 기술을 활용해 새 직업을 얻도록 하는 것 뿐이에요.

But as I say this, I do realize

이렇게 말씀드리긴 하지만,

this is going to be a profoundly complex societal challenge

and so big, that governments, companies and individuals must -- together.

너무나 거대해서 정부, 기업, 개인이 반드시 함께 해결해야 할 과제입니다.

They must work together.

모두 함께 협력해야 합니다.

I am confident that the only way forward is to replace our fear

앞으로 나아갈 유일한 방법은 두려움과 회의감을

and our skepticism

with curiosity and optimism.

호기심과 낙관주의로 바꾸는 것뿐이라고 확신합니다.

And I know this is possible

because of my experience working with the Singapore government

on one of their largest digital reskilling programs.

싱가포르 정부와 일한 경험이 있거든요.

Singapore is a tiny country,

싱가포르는 세계 지도에서 안 보일 정도로 작고,

barely visible on the world map

and devoid of any major natural resources.

주요 천연자원이 전혀 없습니다.

But they realized early on that the only way to grow the nation

is to grow its people.

And since then, they have embraced reskilling so excitedly

that if you visit Singapore,

you're likely going to be bumping into skills ambassadors at shopping malls,

talking excitedly about the impact of adult skill building

through gamified interactive kiosks.

They share positive stories of reskilling on national news,

and they even talk about reskilling

as part of the national defense agenda

against threats and challenges to the economy.

There was even a "lifelong learning" float

Unusual, isn't it,

to see a country take such a positive and proactive approach?

But it was no surprise for me

그런데 놀랄 일도 아니었던 게,

that in 2020, during record unemployment,

기록적인 실업 사태를 겪은 2020년에

the government reached out to my company to ask

싱가포르 정부는 우리 회사에 연락해서

if we could take a few unemployed workers as interns.

실직 노동자 몇 명을 인턴으로 써달라고 요청했습니다.

But that conversation quickly spiraled into something much bigger.

그런데 그 대화는 순식간에 훨씬 더 큰 사업으로 확대됐습니다.

And soon we were working jointly to launch an at-scale,

얼마 지나지 않아 우리는 ‘라이즈’라는

6개월짜리 대규모 프로그램을 함께 시작했습니다.

six-month program called "Rise"

to reskill thousands of individuals from traditional declining roles

이 프로그램을 통해 기존에 하던 역할이 줄어들던 수천 명을

디지털 제품 사용자, 데이터 과학자, 디지털 마케터 등

into roles such as data scientists,

digital product owner and digital marketeer.

역할로 재교육할 수 있었습니다.

But ...

그런데...

As applications to our program increased,

프로그램 지원자가 늘어나면서

so did my nervousness.

저도 더 긴장이 되더라고요.

Many of our applicants had been out of formal education

지원자 중 다수는 정규 교육에서 졸업한 지 20년이 넘었습니다.

for more than 20 years.

We had Simon, a 53-year-old from the construction sector

53세 사이먼 씨는 건설업계에서 일하며

who survived two economic crises,

두 차례 경제 위기에서 살아남았고

to realize that he now wants to get into a digital career.

이번에 디지털 분야 경력을 쌓고 싶었습니다.

We had Hafizah,

하피자 씨는

who spent more than seven months looking for her perfect job,

꿈의 직장에 들어가려고 일곱 달 이상 구직을 했는데

to realize that she needed new skills

to pivot away from the traditional media industry that she worked in,

which was getting impacted by technology.

As I spoke to many of our learners,

수강생 여러 명과 얘기를 나눠봤는데

it was clear to me that this was not going to be an easy transition for them.

전환이 쉽지 않을 거라는 사실은 자명했어요.

So right from the first week,

we focused not just on building their skill set,

우리는 학습자들에게 기술을 가르칠 뿐 아니라

but building their mindset

사고방식을 바꾸고

and building their confidence in their ability to reskill

재교육받고 새로운 분야에서 일할 본인 능력에

and make a career pivot happen.

더 자신감을 가지도록 하는 데 초점을 맞췄습니다.

And this is when we taught them skills

그때 학습자들에게

문제 해결 기본 원칙 같은 기술을 가르쳤어요.

such as first principles problem solving,

a strategy we consultants use to solve some of our client's difficult problems.

컨설턴트가 고객의 어려운 문제를 해결하기 위해 쓰는 기술이죠.

First principles problem solving is challenging assumptions

문제 해결 기본 원칙은

가정과 전제들을 잘 따져서 해결할 진짜 문제를 알아낸 다음,

to identify the real problem to be solved,

주제에 대해 깊은 전문 지식이 없더라도

and then looking at issues from multiple fresh perspectives,

even when you may not have deep subject matter expertise to begin with,

여러 새로운 관점에서 문제를 바라본 뒤

and then distilling the core insight in a concise way.

핵심에 대한 통찰을 간결하게 정리하는 겁니다.

문제 해결 기본 원칙은

These first principles problem solving skills would prepare our learners

학습자들이 직무 영역에서 겪는 낯선 상황에

to thrive in these unfamiliar situations they will find themselves in

in these new job domains.

대처할 수 있게 해 줄 것입니다.

And then to teach them the digital or the technology skills,

그런 다음 학습자들에게 디지털 기술을 가르쳤습니다.

we had to make things very, very real and practical for our mature learners.

성인 학습자들에게 맞도록 정말 정말 현실적이고 실용적으로 가르쳤습니다.

So we put their skills in action on real projects.

그래서 학습자들이 배운 기술을 실제 업무에 적용하도록 했죠.

And this is where we invited executives from companies like Olam,

Danone and Singapore Airlines to host hackathons.

I still remember one of the hackathon showcases

저는 ‘라이즈’ 프로그램 학습자들의 해커톤 발표 사례 중에

where our "Rise" learners

presented the deep user research they did,

심층적 사용자 조사 결과와

and the mock up of the digital app that they were recommending.

디지털 앱 시험 모델을 발표하던 팀이 아직도 기억나요.

One of the client professionals got so excited and he told them,

초청한 전문가 중 한 분은 신이 나서 발표자들께 말씀하시더라고요.

"This is like professional consulting work."

“결과물이 전문가 수준이네요.”

I sat there smiling cheek to cheek,

저도 같이 앉아서 함박웃음을 웃었습니다.

because I knew that if these learners had applied for jobs,

만약 학습자들이 채용에 지원했더라면

their applications would have been screened out even in the very first stage.

첫 단계에서 지원서가 걸러졌으리란 걸 알고 있었으니까요.

그런데도 우리 학습자 중 80% 이상이 일자리를 구했습니다.

And yet, more than 80 percent of our learners found jobs.

Our friend Simon,

우리 사이먼 씨는

he got hired as a digital project manager in In-Shore Tech.

정보 서비스 기업인 인쇼어테크에 디지털 관리자로 고용되었습니다.

And Hafiza,

그리고 하피자 씨는

she works as a digital marketing specialist

사이버 보안 회사에서 디지털 마케팅 전문가로

in [a] cyber security company.

일하고 있습니다.

Every time somebody from our program found a job,

저희 프로그램에 참여한 누군가가 일자리를 찾을 때마다

we felt like proud parents.

Such bliss, I tell you.

장담하는데 진짜 행복한 경험이에요.

But the government of Singapore had an important role to play

하지만 ‘라이즈’ 같은 프로그램의 성공에는

싱가포르 정부가 중요한 역할을 했습니다.

in the success of programs like "Rise."

They created a national job database

싱가포르 정부는 전국 일자리 데이터베이스를 구축했고,

and they incentivized companies to hire such reskilled talent.

기업들이 재교육 받은 인재를 채용하도록 장려했습니다.

They're even steering academia to transition from higher education

심지어 학계가 고등교육 이후

지속적 학습으로 전환하도록 유도하고 있습니다.

to continuous learning.

And they have so successfully changed the narrative from fear to curiosity

싱가포르 정부가 재교육에 대한 인식을 공포에서 호기심으로

성공적으로 전환한 덕분에

that in 2021 alone,

more than 660,000 individuals

지원자 66만 명 이상과

and more than 24,000 companies

기업 24,000곳 이상이

participated in their programs.

And if you thought Singapore was unique, we are not the only ones.

싱가포르가 특이한 경우라고 생각하신다면, 그건 아니에요.

Italy, Spain, India and many other countries

이탈리아, 스페인, 인도 등 많은 국가에서

are launching similar skilling initiatives.

유사한 재교육 사업을 벌였습니다.

But beyond the role of governments,

그런데 재교육에 대한 회의적인 인식을

companies play an important part

낙관적으로 전환하는 데에는

to shift this mindset from skepticism

정부의 역할 외에도 기업이 중요한 역할을 합니다.

to optimism for reskilling.

Take Ikea, the global furniture player.

글로벌 가구 업체 이케아를 예로 들겠습니다.

In 2021,

2021년, 이케아는 ‘빌리’라는 인공 지능 로봇을 개발해서

Ikea launched this AI bot they call Billy

to manage majority of their routine customer inquiries.

고객들이 하는 일상적인 질의를 맡겨서 처리하려 했어요.

But hold on a second.

그런데 잠깐만요,

What would happen to all those call center employees?

그럼 콜센터 직원들은 어떻게 되는 거죠?

Would they lose their jobs?

그 사람들은 일자리를 잃는 건가요?

No.

아닙니다.

This is where Ikea chose to take a revolutionary approach,

이케아는 혁신적인 방법을 택했습니다.

and they actually ended up reskilling more than 8,500 individuals

콜센터에서 근무하던 직원 8,500명 이상을

who were call center employees

실내 디자인 컨설턴트로 재교육해서

into interior design consultants to provide new,

소비자에게 맞춤형 디자인 서비스를 제공했습니다.

personalized design services to their customers.

And the best part of this story

여기서 가장 대단한 점은

이케아가 직원과 고객들의 마음을 사로잡아

is that Ikea won the hearts and the minds

of its employees and customers,

but made an incremental sales

2022년 한 해에만 매출을 14억 달러 이상 늘렸다는 거예요.

of more than 1.4 billion dollars in 2022 alone.

Now ultimately beyond governments and companies,

이제 궁극적으로 정부와 기업을 넘어

the real change must come from all of us.

진정한 변화는 우리 모두의 몫이에요.

I've been trying to invest in my own skills

저는 요즘 저만의 기술을 새로 익히고

and not worry too much about my pretty slides and AI,

인공 지능이나 발표 자료 같은 건 그다지 걱정하지 않으려고 합니다.

여섯 살짜리 제 아이에게 평생 학습의 본보기가 되려고도 노력중이에요.

and to model the lifelong learning behavior to my six-year-old.

He has this piggy bank that we call "my learning bank"

제 아이는 ‘내 학비 저금통’이라는 저금통이 있어요.

to save money to learn new skills.

새 기술을 배우는 데 드는 자금을 모으려고 마련했죠.

Very recently, we used our savings on a course for robotics for kids.

아이는 얼마 전에 어린이 로봇 공학 강좌를 듣는 데 저금한 돈을 썼어요.

아이는 물건 만들기를 진짜 좋아해요.

He just loves building things, I tell you.

And he was very, very excited to show off the giraffe that he had built

아이는 정말 정말 기뻐하면서

직접 만든 기린이 한 걸음씩 걷는 것을 자랑했어요.

that could walk step by step.

And step by step is all we need to embrace the reskilling revolution.

재교육 혁명을 받아들이려면

기린처럼 한 걸음 한 걸음 나아가기만 하면 됩니다.

Job evolution due to technology is just going to be this new reality

기술 때문에 일어나는 직업 혁명은 우리가 마주한 현실입니다.

of the world we have to live in.

But we must embrace this not with fear and with skepticism,

그래도 두려움이나 회의적인 태도가 아니라

but with curiosity and optimism

기술을 다시, 또 다시 익힐 호기심과

for building our skills again and again.

낙관적인 태도로 현실을 받아들여야 합니다.
