3 Lessons on Hope in Challenging Times | Wajahat Ali | TED

The last time I addressed this august TED crowd was in 2019

제가 최근에 TED 청중들 앞에 섰던 건 2019년 가을이었어요.

from the main stage in Vancouver,

where I was giving my first TED Talk on the case for having children.

자녀가 생긴다는 것을 주제로 첫 강연을 했습니다.

And that's where I shared the news I had just received earlier in the week

그때 제가 그 주초에 들은 소식을 말씀드렸죠.

that my then two-year-old daughter, Nusayba,

그때 두 살이었던 제 딸 누세이바가

was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and needed a full liver transplant.

간암 4기 진단을 받았고 간 이식을 해야 한다는 것이었죠.

So how have your past three years been?

여러분은 지난 3년간 어떻게 지내셨나요?

As you can imagine,

예상하시겠지만 저는 지난 3년간 많은 일이 있었죠.

our last three years have been eventful.

However, they have given me some tough,

하지만, 그 힘들지만 배워야 했던

learned, lived experiences and lessons

산 경험과 교훈을 통해 저는

about this ephemeral thing we call hope.

우리가 희망이라고 부르는, 덧없는 것이 무엇인지 알았습니다.

And apparently, there is a huge demand for hope right now.

그런데 요즘, 많은 이들이 희망을 갈구하죠.

In 2022,

2022년은 우리 모두에게 참 다사다난한 해입니다.

we're all dealing with multiple crises.

A pandemic has killed 900,000 Americans,

감염병으로 미국인 90만 명이 사망했고

there's a partial lockdown, there's disinformation,

부분 봉쇄도 있고, 허위 정보도 있고,

there's income inequality,

소득 불평등도 있고,

the rise of white supremacy, people telling people like me,

백인 우월주의가 퍼져서 저 같은 사람에게

“Go back to where you came from.”

“네 나라로 돌아가라“고 하는 사람도 있죠.

We have to learn new Greek letters every few months,

몇 달마다 새 그리스 문자를 배우고

and oh, yeah, there's climate change.

아, 그리고 기후 변화도 있군요.

But other than that, things are pretty peachy.

그런 것들 빼고는 꽤 살 만해요.

And with all of that, you might be asking,

그런 것들을 다 생각한다면, 여러분은 이렇게 묻겠죠.

“Well, then, why should we be hopeful in such hopeless times, Wajahat?”

“와자핫, 이런 암울한 세상에서 대체 왜 희망적이어야 하는 거지?”

And that is a very valid question.

아주 당연한 질문입니다.

And it's a perfectly fair question.

그런 질문이 나올 수밖에 없어요.

But hope is what allowed me to believe that my daughter would somehow survive.

하지만 희망이 저로 하여금 어떻게든 딸이 나을 거라고 믿게 했어요.

And she did.

딸은 나았고요.

이번 강연에서 간략하게 말씀드릴 건

And so if I may, allow me to share briefly

three pieces of advice or lessons

조언이나 교훈, 혹은 우리가 할 수 있는 일 세 가지입니다.

or things that we can do

that gave me hope in hopeless times

희망 없던 제게 희망을 주었던 것이고 여러분에게도 희망을 주길 바랍니다.

and that I hope can help you.

Number one.

첫 번째,

Tie your camel first.

먼저 낙타를 묶어 두세요.

There's a great saying in Islam,

무슬림들은 대부분이 아는 유명한 속담인데,

many Muslims know this,

that, have faith in God, but tie your camel first.

신을 믿되, 먼저 낙타를 묶어두라는 겁니다.

아빠로서, 누세이바의 암은 완전히 절망적이었습니다.

As a dad,

I felt utterly hopeless with Nusayba's cancer.

I'm the dad, I'm supposed to fix things.

아빠로서, 해결해 주어야 하는데 암을 고쳐줄 순 없으니까요.

But I couldn't fix cancer.

Cancer plays for all the marbles.

암을 상대로는 이길 수가 없더군요.

It's a relentless, brutal, remorseless killing machine.

암은 거침없고 잔인하고 냉혹한 살인 기계입니다.

It does not care about your vacation plans.

여러분의 휴가 계획 따위를 봐주는 법이 없죠.

It does not care about your bucket list.

버킷리스트나 넷플릭스에서 볼거리들도 봐주지 않아요.

It does not care about your Netflix queue.

It comes for everything.

모든 것에 훼방을 놓습니다.

Then, coronavirus.

그리고 코로나바이러스가 왔죠, 대단합니다.

Awesome.

How do I defeat coronavirus?

제가 코로나를 어떻게 이깁니까?

A 41-year-old, middle-aged, slightly overweight male with flat foot.

경도 비만에 평발인 41살 중년이 말이죠.

It's easy to feel helpless,

절망에 빠져 무력하게 표류할 수밖에 없었습니다.

out of control, adrift.

But at the end of the day,

하지만, 어쨌든

try letting go of what you can't control

여러분이 통제할 수 없는 건 놓아 주고

and just focus on what you can control.

통제할 수 있는 것에 집중해 보세요.

The simple stuff.

간단한 것들이요.

Wear a mask.

마스크를 쓰고 백신을 맞고

Get vaccinated.

Take care of your daily chores.

일상을 유지하세요.

Something that makes you feel that you have some control,

세상을 살아갈 능력, 통제감을 주는 것들 말이죠.

some agency in this world.

When it came to Nusayba,

누세이바의 경우엔 아빠로서 그저 옆에 있어 주는 거예요.

that meant as a dad, just to be present, you know,

building her her Lego Friends set when she asked me to build it.

레고를 해달라고 하면 해주고,

Watching "Frozen" 39 times,

겨울 왕국을 39번 보고,

then followed by "Zootopia" 46 times,

다음엔 주토피아를 46번 보고,

then followed by "Moana" 56 times.

그 다음엔 모아나를 56번 보는 것.

Getting her the tasty frozen yogurt from the hospital vending machine

딸이 좋아하는, 맛있는 병원 자판기 요거트 아이스크림을 사다 주기.

that she loved.

Do what you can the best you can.

할 수 있는 일에 최선을 다하기.

Have hope, but tie your camel first.

희망을 갖되, 낙타부터 묶어 두기.

And then be like Elsa from "Frozen"

그러고는 겨울 왕국의 엘사처럼 나머지는 놓아주기.

and let the rest go.

Number two:

두 번째,

invest in joy.

즐거움에 투자하세요.

Make the intention to actively invest in this thing called joy every day.

즐거움이란 것에 매일 열심히 투자하려고 노력하세요.

Almost like a workout.

거의 운동하듯이 꼭 해야 합니다.

You have to commit to it.

It has to be a discipline.

규율이 있어야 해요.

Build and flex that muscle.

그 근육을 키우고 늘리세요.

The world does not need more masochists or martyrs.

마조히스트나 순교자가 될 필요는 없습니다.

과로하고, 스트레스에 시달리며 탈진할 필요도 없습니다.

It does not need more overworked, overstressed burnouts.

New rule for 2022.

2022년의 새 규칙입니다.

You deserve to have moments of joy, even if they are fleeting,

잠깐만이라도, 살아있는 매일매일 즐거운 순간을 누려도 됩니다.

every day that you are alive.

And you have to take those moments,

그런 순간들을 잡아야만 합니다.

you have to grab them, you have to seize them.

붙잡고, 꼭 쥐어야 해요.

I love food,

전 음식을 좋아해서 파키스탄 요리를 배웠습니다.

so I learned how to cook Pakistani food,

took my mom's recipes during lockdown.

거리 두기 기간에 어머니의 요리법을 얻었죠.

My kids love Lego, so that means now I love Lego.

제 아이들은 레고를 좋아해서 이제 저도 레고를 좋아합니다.

I love drinking chai.

차이 티 마시는 것도 좋아해서 매일 한 잔씩 마시면 기분이 좋아지죠.

I make a cup of chai every day, it makes me happy.

얼마나 고통스럽고 절망스럽고 스트레스를 받든지 간에

No matter how much stress or pain or misery I was going through,

I made sure to invest time every day,

반드시 즐거움에 매일 투자했습니다.

to invest in things and people

제가 즐거움을 느끼게 해주는 물건들과 사람들, 경험들에 투자했습니다.

and experiences that gave me joy.

And finally, number three.

마지막으로,

I would recommend, humbly, invest in the narrative of hope

소박하게 권하건대 희망에 투자하세요.

because the alternative is apathy and cynicism.

그렇지 않으면 냉담과 비관만 남습니다.

Investing in hope is painful.

희망에 투자하는 건 고통스럽습니다.

It means opening yourself up to the possibility of pain,

배신과 실망, 고통의 가능성에 노출되는 것이니까요.

betrayal and disappointment.

It's easier to court cynicism, right?

비관을 체득하는 건 쉽죠?

You expect nothing, so you lose nothing.

기대가 없으면 잃는 것도 없으니까요.

But it also means you have resigned yourself to the cheap seats.

그렇지만 그건 싸구려 좌석을 맡는 것과 다름없습니다.

You are a spectator who yells out "Boo,"

야유하는 청중이 되는 거죠.

instead of being a participant in the ring where your nose could get bloody,

링 위에서 코피를 흘리더라도 참가자가 되어서

어쨌든 일보 전진하는 대신에 말이죠.

but at least you're pushing the ball forward.

It means choosing apathy and nihilism, which is comforting and easy,

그건 몸이 편하고 쉬운 대신 게으르고 파괴적인

but also lazy and destructive.

냉담과 허무주의를 택하는 것입니다.

During Nusayba's cancer,

누세이바가 투병하는 동안,

가족들이 자러 간 후에도 저는 깨어있곤 했습니다.

I used to sit up every night after my family went to sleep

and I stayed up till, like, three or four am, I couldn't sleep.

서너 시까지 잠을 못 이루겠더라고요.

잠을 못 이루며 생각을 했습니다.

And instead I imagined,

like Doctor Strange in "Avengers: Endgame,"

어벤져스 엔드게임에서 타임스톤을 가진 닥터 스트레인지처럼

with the time stone,

그저 아빠로서 대비하려고 가능한 시나리오와 결과들을 상상했어요.

every possible scenario and outcome, just to prepare myself as a father.

I had to emotionally prepare for every outcome.

모든 결과들을 받아들일 감정을 연습해야만 했죠.

So I used to imagine Nusayba dying.

그래서 누세이바가 죽는 상상을 하곤 했어요.

제 손으로 누세이바를 묻어주는 상상.

I imagined burying her with my own hands.

I imagined making the phone call to her grandparents,

부모님에게 전화해서

explaining that she had died, listening to them cry.

누세이바가 죽었다고 말하고 그분들이 우는 소리를 듣는 상상.

I imagined living the rest of my life like a shell of a man,

남은 삶을 빈껍데기처럼 사는 상상,

but pretending to put a smile on my face

하지만 웃는 표정을 꾸며내야 하죠.

because I had a son to raise and now a daughter.

큰 아들이 있고 막내딸도 생겼거든요.

My wife, badass that she is,

제 아내는, 원래 멋지지만,

was also pregnant during Nusayba's cancer.

누세이바가 투병 중일 때 임신했거든요.

I had to be prepared.

그 준비도 해야 했죠.

But I also chose to invest in a narrative in which Nusayba lived.

누세이바가 사는 쪽으로 투자하기도 했어요.

And I imagined seeing her alive

딸이 간 이식을 받아서 웃으며 사는 상상.

with a liver transplant, smiling,

regaining her hair, full of joy and life.

머리도 다시 나고 즐겁고 생기있게요.

I preferred that story.

그 이야기가 더 좋았습니다.

That's the story I invested in,

그래서 그쪽으로 투자했고

even as we were sitting on the edge of what seemed like a falling cliff,

당시 상황은 마치 벼랑 끝에 앉아 있는 것 같았지만

I decided I would put out the lawn chair and at least enjoy the scenery.

접는 의자를 꺼내 놓고 경치 구경을 하는 걸 택했어요.

Over 500 people, mostly strangers,

대부분 낯선 500명 이상이

chose to sign up to be donors for Nusayba,

누세이바에게 기증을 하겠다고 나섰어요.

even people who told me they hated me for my politics.

제 사상이 싫다고 했던 사람도요.

They were moved by her story.

딸의 이야기에 감동받았대요.

Sometimes some people can change.

누구든 어쩔 땐 바뀔 수 있어요.

Sometimes some people can choose to do and be good.

누구든 어쩔 때는 선행을 하겠다고 택할 수 있어요.

An anonymous donor, Shawn Zahir,

숀 자히르라는 익명의 기증자가 간 일부를 기증하기로 했어요.

decided to give a piece of his liver to a girl he never met

만나보지도 않은 소녀를 살리려고요.

just so she could live.

I'm not Pollyanna.

저는 지나친 낙천주의자도 아니고,

I'm not a foolish, wide-eyed, naive optimist.

바보도 아니고, 순진한 낙관주의자도 아니에요.

I'm a pragmatist,

전 실용주의자이고

fully aware of the many challenges and horrors we are facing.

우리가 처한 고난과 공포를 잘 알아요.

But through my own personal experience, if it is at all helpful,

조금이라도 도움이 된다면, 제 경험에 의하면,

I can assure you that walking through this forest of horrors,

우리가 이 공포스러운 숲을 걸어서

going on this journey, wherever it may lead,

도달하는 곳이 어디든 간에,

if you choose to invest in hope,

희망에 투자한다면

it at least makes the ride a bit sweeter and easier.

And as the wise ram tells Po in “Kung Fu Panda 2,”

쿵푸판다2에서 현명한 양이 포에게 이렇게 말했죠.

"Your story may not have such a happy beginning,

“이야기의 시작이 불행하다고 해서

but that does not make you who you are.

너도 불행할 필요는 없다.

It is the rest of it,

네가 무엇이 될지는 이야기의 나머지에 달려 있다.”

who you choose to be."

Right now,

지금,

survival is victory in this story that we are living.

우리가 사는 이 이야기에서는 생존이 승리입니다.

We are alive during a pandemic.

우린 이 전염병에서 살아남았어요.

We are winning.

우리는 이기고 있고 그것만으로도 감사해야 해요.

And just for that, we should be grateful.

And I hope the choices we make in these challenging times will,

이 힘든 시기에 우리가 내리는 결정들은

신의 뜻대로,

Inshallah, God willing,

lead to a better story for all of us.

더 나은 이야기로 우리를 인도할 것입니다.

And I believe that begins with choosing to invest in hope

이는 희망이 없는 때에도 희망에 투자하길 택할 때

during hopeless times.

I think before we dive into just talking more about what you've suggested

I'd love to start by talking a little bit about your book

작가님의 책 이야기를 조금 하고 싶습니다.

"Go Back to Where You Came From,"

“네 나라로 돌아가라”

because I think that it will provide a nice foundation

작가님이 이를 어떻게 생각하는지,

for, sort of, understanding your thinking around this

그리고 이를 어떻게 진정으로 받아들이게 되었는지에 대해

and sort of how you've come to really embrace this.

알려줄 수 있는 좋은 기초가 될 것 같아요.

So I guess maybe you could start first by talking about the title of the book.

먼저 책 제목에 대해서 이야기해보지요.

You know, it's part memoir, part historical analysis,

자전적이기도 하고 역사적이기도 하고,

part how-to guide on being inclusive and creating a place of belonging.

소속되는 법과 포용의 장으로 만드는 방법이 담겨있는 책이죠.

How did you come up with the title?

제목은 어떻게 짓게 되신 거고 이 제목을 택한 이유는 무엇인가요?

Why did you choose this for the title of your book?

와자핫: 책 제목은 이렇습니다.

WA: So the title is “Go Back to Where You Came From:

“네 나라로 돌아가라: 미국인이 되는 다른 좋은 방법들“

And Other Helpful Recommendations on How to Become American.”

Very deliberate tongue in cheek, both ugly and funny, right?

일부러 모순을 의도했는데, 못나기도 하고 웃기기도 하죠?

Because I believe that's the lived experience of life.

제 생각엔 그게 삶의 경험이기 때문입니다.

But that's the lived experience of many Americans

나라로부터 사랑받지 못하는데도

who are still trying to love a country that doesn't love us back.

여전히 나라를 사랑하려 애쓰는 많은 미국인들의 산 경험이죠.

And so how do you respond to that pain?

사람들은 이 고통에 어떻게 반응할까요?

And some people cry, as you can tell, I laugh.

어떤 사람은 울기도 하지만, 저는 보시다시피 웃습니다.

And so this book is also an elegy

이 책은 슬픈 이야기이기도 하죠.

for the rest of us

미국 이야기의 주인공 역할에 합류하려고 분투하는 우리들의 이야기입니다.

who are still striving to be co-protagonists

of this American narrative.

And the book tries to expand and stretch this country

이 책을 통해 나라의 영역을 확장해서

to accommodate all of us

우리 모두를 포용할 수 있게 해서

to become the multiracial democracy it has to become.

도래해야 하는 다문화 민주주의로 나아가게 하고자 합니다.

Or else I believe it'll all fail.

그렇지 않으면 제 생각엔 다 망해요.

And it's done with a lot of humor and hope,

유머와 희망을 책 속에 많이 집어넣었고

and throughout the journey, you read the book,

책을 읽으셨겠지만, 중간에

you know, I talk about Nusayba's cancer,

누세이바의 암 이야기 외에

but there's lots of interesting things that happen to me.

제게 있었던 재미있는 이야기도 많습니다.

WPR: To put it mildly.

위트니: 좋게 말해서 그렇죠.

WA: Yeah, my life is like a telenovela,

와자핫: 네, 제 인생은 마치

like a Mexican soap opera for better and for worse.

멕시코 아침 드라마처럼 다사다난하달까요.

And so I hope that when you get to the end part,

책 마지막 부분에 가서

where I talk about "invest in hope, but tie your camel first,"

제가 “희망에 투자하되, 낙타부터 매라“고 한 부분에서

the hope that I give the audience for the future,

제가 독자들에게 드리는 미래에 대한 희망은,

I don't want it to make it a hallmarky,

상투적으로 들리거나

fake, saccharine, Hollywood ending.

가짜, 혹은 사카린 같은, 할리우드식 결말이 아니라,

I want you to really, like, I want it to be earned.

정말 일구어 얻은 것이길 바라요.

And you know, the way to earn it is to confront the horrors,

일구어 얻기 위해선 공포를 대면하고,

confront the challenges, name it, own it.

도전하고, 알고, 체득해야 해요.

Talk about the pain, wear the mileage and the scars.

고통을 이야기하고, 연륜을 얻고 상처를 입어야 합니다.

But despite all of that, you still persist, right?

그 모든 것들에도 불구하고, 우리는 계속 노력한단 말이죠.

And because I agree, I mean,

왜냐하면, 제가 방금 드린

what I said in the speech, the five-minute talk that I just gave you,

5분 간의 연설에서 말씀드린 것을, 저는 정말로 믿습니다.

I believe in it.

I've been on all the sides in moments of deep despair.

저는 깊은 절망에 빠져 있기도 했고

I've been there, of darkness of pain,

고통의 어둠 속에 있을 때 항복하면 끝난다는 걸 알았어요.

and I realize if you tap out, it's over.

If you tap out, it's done.

항복하면 끝난다고요.

And what I've seen,

and we'll probably talk about it because you read the book,

다 끝났다고 느끼는 인생의 그 순간들에서,

in those moments in my life where you feel like it's over, it's done,

I'm at the edge of the cliff and I'm about to fall,

절벽 끄트머리에서 떨어질 일밖에 남지 않았을 때,

there's been a plot twist.

늘 반전이 있었습니다.

Like, the the page turns,

마치 페이지가 넘어가면서 더 나은 이야기가 나오는 것처럼요.

and with it comes, like, a better story.

And so in the book I mention there was a time

책에서 언급하기도 했는데,

where I was completely broke, homeless,

한때 저는 완전히 파산해서 집도 잃고,

my parents were in jail, I was taking care of my grandparents.

부모님은 감옥에 계셨고, 조부모님을 모시고 있었죠.

And I’m like, there’s no way, I couldn’t even imagine my future.

뭐랄까, 아무리 생각해봐도 제 미래가 그려지지 않는 거예요.

I couldn't imagine living to the age of 40.

마흔 살이 된 저를 상상할 수 없었고 서른다섯이면 죽었을 거라고 생각했죠.

I thought I would be dead by 35.

I’m being honest with anyone who’s listening.

정말 솔직하게 말씀드리는 거예요.

말씀드렸다시피 닥터 스트레인지처럼 수많은 인생을 상상했는데

My timeline, you know, I imagine a lot, like I said, like Doctor Strange,

it ended at 35, I just couldn't imagine it.

모두 서른다섯 살에 끝났고 그 이후는 상상이 안 됐어요.

And I just knew that I would die.

그냥 죽을 걸 알고 있었고 거의 죽었기도 했어요.

It’d be over, and I almost did die.

But here I am, sitting in my home,

하지만 전 여기 집에 앉아 있죠.

married to a woman who's way better than me,

한참 나은 여자와 결혼했죠, 저는 장가를 잘 갔어요.

I married way up.

저보다 매력있고, 똑똑하고, 믿기지도 않고 웃음이 나지도 않죠.

Like, hotter than me, smarter than me,

like, it’s ridiculous, not even cool.

And then I got three kids and then Nusayba, who was supposed to die,

그리고 세 아이를 얻고, 이어서 누세이바가 그렇게 됐죠.

사람들은 누세이바가 버티지 못할 거라고 했죠.

that’s what they told me, she wouldn’t make it.

사람들은 온갖 합병증을 말했죠.

They said every complication against this girl is happening,

you could just hear her chirping right now,

여러분, 저기서 꺄르륵 대는 소리가 들리시죠.

I'm sure you guys can hear her chirping, that's Nusayba.

저 소리가 분명히 들리실 텐데, 쟤가 누세이바예요.

So you never know, you never know.

그러니까 진짜 모르는 일이에요, 정말.

WPR: We have a question that came in from Darcy,

위트니: 달시 씨가 질문을 주셨네요.

where Darcy asked, "The idea of investing in hope is a great one.

“희망에 투자한다는 생각은 훌륭하지만,

But how can we make it tangible?

실생활에서는 어떻게 할 수 있나요?

You mentioned visualization or avoiding complaining,

상상하고, 불평은 줄이라고 하셨는데

but how else can we actually bring this to life?"

실생활에 적용할 수 있는 다른 방법이 있나요?”

WA: It's a very good question,

와자핫: 아주 좋은 질문입니다.

and that's where I say, tie your camel first.

제가 낙타부터 매라고 말한 부분이군요.

You have to exhaust yourself of every possibility within your control.

여러분이 통제 가능한 범위 내의 모든 가능성을 두드려 봐야 합니다.

You know, and after that, you have to let go.

그 다음엔, 그냥 놔버리는 거예요.

책에서 말한 예를 보죠.

I'll give you an example, I mention it in the book.

There was a moment, my parents were in jail.

부모님이 수감되셨던 때가 있었어요.

I'm 21 years old, I have to leave school.

저는 스물한 살이었고 학교를 중퇴해야 했습니다.

I'm taking care of my grandparents,

조부모님을 돌봐야 했죠, 당시 같이 살던 할머니들을요.

my grandmothers, who used to live with me.

I'm an only child.

전 외아들이었고 가사를 돌보고 변호사 비용을 마련해야 했죠.

I have to care of the family business,

I have to pay the lawyer.

It's post-9/11, my community turns vicious and cruel.

9/11사건 이후라 사회가 잔인해지고 거칠어지고 있었죠.

Bad news travels fast, ladies and gentlemen,

나빠지는 건 한순간이더라고요, 여러분, 정말 한순간이었어요.

bad news travels fast.

I'm surgical with my budget.

돈을 신중하게 써야 했어요.

I have an Excel sheet.

엑셀시트 가계부가 있었는데, 돈을 내야 할 곳들이 많았어요.

I've got to pay all the bills.

According to my Excel sheet,

제 가계부를 봤더니

after I withdrew the 20 dollars from Wells Fargo

웜스프링과 미션 가 모퉁이에 있는 웰스 파고 은행에서

on the corner of Warm Springs and Mission,

20달러를 출금하면 71달러가 남는다고 하더군요.

I was supposed to have 71 dollars left.

I go to the ATM of Wells Fargo.

웰스 파고의 ATM기계에 가서

I take out the 20 bucks, I get the receipt.

20달러를 출금하고 영수증을 받았는데

I look at the bottom, instead of 71 dollars,

영수증에 나온 잔액은

71달러가 아니라 0.03달러였어요.

it was 00.03.

I had 20 dollars, 00.03,

20달러하고 0.03달러가 남았는데,

I had to pay the bills, pay the lawyer,

고지서와 변호사 비용도 내야 하고 가족도 돌봐야 하는 거죠.

take care of my family.

And I swear to you, at that time ...

맹세컨대, 그 당시에는,

I mean, honestly, I said: “I have done everything in my power.

솔직하게 말씀드리면, 이렇게 말했습니다.

“내가 할 수 있는 일은 다했다. 나는 지쳤다.

I am exhausted.

What can I do with three cents?”

3센트로 뭘 할 수 있겠나?”

I didn't even get angry, I didn't get upset.

화도 나지 않았고 슬프지도 않았죠.

I remember this vividly, it was a beautiful Bay Area day,

아주 선명하게 기억하는데, 베이 에어리어의 화창한 날이었고

anyone who lives there knows, 4pm, little bit of a windy breeze.

거기 사는 분들은 아실 텐데 바람이 살랑살랑 부는 오후 네 시였죠.

The sun was still there, it was just idyllic.

아직 해도 떠있고, 완벽한 날씨였어요.

And I remember I started laughing, look at the receipt,

영수증을 보면서 웃었던 기억이 나요.

뒤에 사람들 몇명이

and a couple of people behind me

were trying to figure out what’s wrong with this guy.

이 사람이 왜 이러나 궁금해 했고요.

전 뭘 해야 할지 몰랐거든요, 3센트만 남았다니, 그냥 웃었어요.

Because I didn’t know what to do, I just chuckled, I had three cents left.

그리고 제가 한 일은 이겁니다.

So this is what I did.

20달러를 가지고 길을 건너가서 다 써버리기로 했어요.

I took the 20 dollars, went across the street and decided to splurge.

I went to Subway

서브웨이에 가서

and had a Subway supersized meal,

초대형 샌드위치를 사 먹었어요.

foot-long tuna sandwich with all the workings and avocado.

아보카도와 온갖 것을 다 넣은 12인치짜리 참치 샌드위치였어요.

And then I decided to have two chocolate chip cookies.

초콜릿칩 쿠키도 두 개 먹었고요.

Then I went next door and had -- what is a Venti?

그러고 나서 옆집으로 가서,

스타벅스에서 제일 큰 게 벤티인가요?

What's the largest one at Starbucks?

WPR: I think Venti, I don't drink coffee.

위트니: 벤티인 것 같아요, 전 커피를 안 마셔서요.

WA: Venti caramel frappe with extra caramel drizzle, right?

와자핫: 벤티 사이즈 캬라멜 프라페에 캬라멜 시럽을 추가했어요.

20달러가 10달러로 줄었죠.

And I had now 20 dollars became 10 dollars.

집으로 가서 할머니에게 말했죠.

I went home, and I told my grandmother,

I said, "I've done everything I possibly could.

“저는 할 수 있는 일은 다 했어요.

There's nothing else I can do.

더 이상 뭘 해야 할지 모르겠어요.

We have 10 bucks left, I'm sorry."

10달러밖에 안 남았어요, 죄송해요.”

I had some Dal Chawal that night watched a Netflix movie.

저녁으로는 달 차왈을 먹고 넷플릭스 영화를 봤어요.

And I remember, I said this in the book, I let go.

책에서 얘기한 것처럼 놓아버린 기억이 나요.

There's nothing else I could do.

그 외엔 할 수 있는 일이 없었고 완전히 놓아 버렸죠.

I completely let go.

I said, Allah, whatever happens, Inshallah, I leave it up to you.

“알라, 무슨 일이든 간에, 뜻대로 하세요“라고 했죠.

I've done everything within my powers,

제 힘으로 할 수 있는 일은 다 했고,

like, everything I could possibly think of, I've done.

생각해낼 수 있는 일이란 일은 다 해봤으니까요.

This is it, like, you want to save me, save me,

뭐랄까, 구하고 싶으면 구하시고, 아니면 맘대로 하시고요.

you don't want to save me, whatever, I enjoyed my Subway meal.

샌드위치는 맛있었습니다.

그리고 기억나는 게, 아주 재밌는데,

And I remember, this is really interesting,

I had the best night's sleep that night that I have ever had in my life.

그날 밤에 잔 잠이 인생을 통틀어 제일 꿀잠이었어요.

I remember that sleep to this day.

그날의 숙면이 아직도 기억나요.

I have prayed for that sleep.

그런 숙면을 소원했었거든요.

I felt like I was a baby in my mother's womb.

어머니 배 속의 태아 같은 기분이었어요.

I tried to wonder why.

왜일까 생각해봤는데,

It's because I knew that I did everything within my powers,

내 힘으로 할 수 있는 일은 다 했다는 걸 내가 알았고,

I exhausted myself, and I let it go.

온 힘을 다 한 후에 놓아 줬기 때문이에요.

And then what happened,

그러고 나서 어쩌다 보니까 대출로 2500불이 생겼어요.

somehow, I got a loan and 2,500 bucks came.

And the story continued.

그리고 삶이 계속됐죠.

And so when you're saying about doing something tangible,

그러니 실생활에서 할 수 있는 일을 물으신다면,

it's not just me saying that like,

말로만 그칠 것이 아니라,

you have to have some feeling of control and autonomy

통제감과 자기주도적인 기분을 느껴야 합니다.

in what is a world where you feel adrift

발밑에서 땅이 흔들리고 떠다니는 것 같은 이 세상에서 말이죠.

and the ground is shifting beneath your feet.

Those small chores that you take for granted,

여러분이 당연하게 여기는 사소한 일과는

they'll give you order, some discipline.

여러분에게 질서와 규율을 줍니다.

I’m making that chai. I’m painting this.

차이 티 만들기, 그림 그리기,

아이 밥 챙겨주기, 쓰레기 내버리기.

I’m feeding my children. I took out the trash.

I did some work today.

오늘 할 일을 했습니다.

I can control this. I did this with my hands.

저는 이것들을 통제할 수 있고 제 두 손으로 했습니다.

I'm still alive, right?

저는 아직 살아있잖아요?

And then you plot and you do the best you can,

그러고 꽃을 심고 최선을 다하고 그 다음엔 놓아주는 거죠.

and then you let go.

And I think those daily chores, that daily routine, that you establish

그렇게 쌓은 일과들, 일상들이

gives you a sense of rhythm,

최소한 어떤 리듬감을 주고 이렇게 말하죠.

at the very least, says,

"The world can take everything, but it won't take this.

“세상이 모든 걸 뺏어갈지라도 이건 못 뺏는다.

It won't take my delicious cup of chai that I made with my own hands.

내가 직접 만든 맛있는 차이 티 한 잔은 못 뻇는다.

It won't take this little plant I plotted outside.

밖에 심은 작은 꽃 하나는 못 뺏는다.

It won't take my love for my kids.

아이들을 향한 내 사랑도. 그걸 뺏을 순 없어.

It won't take that from me.

Not today, death, not today."

오늘은 안 돼, 죽음아, 오늘은 아니라고.”

So I hope for whoever asked that question, I hope that was hopeful.
