So I'd love to talk a little bit about cars today.

So cars have always been an irrational affair.

If you think about it,

it makes no sense whatsoever to take two tons of metal

Nevertheless, we have 1.5 billion cars in the world today,

and they have a very dear place in many of our hearts.

So for some of us, the car represents the ultimate engine of freedom.

Like, blow it all off and drive away.

And for others it is the coming of age.

Like, maybe you had your first kiss in a car.

I see you smile.

Or maybe the car even had a name.

So if we look to China, only 16 percent of people say

중국에서는 국민의 16%가

that a car does not increase your status significantly.

And in 2018, the world was watching

그리고 2018년, 사우디아라비아에서는

when in Saudi women took to the steering wheel for the first time.

Musicians aren't writing songs about microwaves or Fitbits,

but Prince had his song "Little Red Corvette."

And Rihanna had a great number one Billboard chart song

Now, when you look at car commercials, they typically look like this.

자, 자동차 광고를 보면 보통 이런 장면이 보입니다.

Super romantic.

완전 낭만적이죠.

Basically, they take you in a very safe space,

대체로 자동차라는 아주 안전한 공간에 여러분이 타고 있고

fantastic, gorgeous landscape with your dear ones around you.

환상적이고 끝내주는 풍경을 연인과 함께 달립니다.

And you can basically drive forever into beautiful land.

그리고 그 아름다운 곳으로 영원히 운전해 가는 거죠.

Now, of course, we all know that this is extremely glamorous

물론 지나치게 미화된 것임을 우리는 알고 있습니다.

but doesn't really reflect reality.

현실과는 전혀 다르죠.

When you do buy a car today,

오늘 여러분이 차를 산다면 보통 이런 기분일 겁니다.

what this feels like usually is like this, right?

교통 체증 때문에 꼼짝 못 하고, 주차할 곳을 찾아야 하고,

You stand in traffic, you look for parking space,

you breathe recycled air, clearly not glamorous.

차 안의 답답한 공기나 마시겠죠. 확실히 멋진 일은 아닙니다.

The other thing is,

또 다른 점은,

if you put about 100 cars from all kinds of brands next to each other,

만약 여러 제조사에서 출시한 차 100대를 한 곳에 모아 보면

I guess you will probably also agree that they look more or less all the same.

차들이 대부분 똑같이 생겼다는 것에 여러분도 아마 동의할 겁니다.

Individuality is clearly dead.

개성이라곤 찾아볼 수도 없죠.

So now next to this crisis of the brand and of car industry,

다음으로 자동차 산업과 제조사의 위기에 대해서 말씀드리자면,

there are three major technology trends that are hitting the industry massively.

자동차 산업계를 강타한 세 가지 중요한 기술 흐름이 있습니다.

The first one is well-known,

첫 번째는, 잘 알려져 있는

which is the shift from fossil energy to clean energy.

화석 연료에서 청정에너지로의 전환입니다.

That one is actually well underway, well understood.

잘 진행되는 중이고, 잘 알려져 있죠.

By 2028, we expect that pure battery electric vehicles

예상컨대 2028년이 되면

순수 배터리 전기차 종류가 가장 많이 팔리게 될 것입니다.

will be the most sold type.

But I'd like to focus more on the other two.

그건 그렇고, 저는 다른 두 가지 흐름에 더 집중하고자 합니다.

So one of them is the shift from mechanical to software.

하나는 기계 장치에서 소프트웨어로의 전환입니다.

And what it does is you don't actually have anymore a fixed product,

but it will continue to evolve, to learn, to change.

계속 발전하고, 학습하고, 변화한다는 뜻입니다.

It's a bit like a touch screen instead of a keyboard.

The other one is you add AI on top,

다른 하나는 인공지능 탑재입니다.

and it means that you will have the ability to switch

인간이 직접 운전하는 것에서 자동 운전으로 전환해

from human operator to machine operated,

and the robot takes over as the driver.

로봇이 운전자를 대신하는 것이죠.

Now, of course, car companies have also understood these trends,

물론 자동차 회사들은 이런 흐름을 잘 이해하고

그에 맞는 기능들을 탑재하려고 노력합니다.

and they are working to incorporate some of the capabilities into the cars.

But I think we have a way longer way to go

그런데 저는 아직 한참 멀었다고 생각합니다.

and we will soon see the emergence of what I call the “software dream car”

대신 "소프트웨어 드림카"가 곧 등장하게 될 것입니다.

as opposed to the freedom dream car

과거에 상상했던 자유로운 드림카나

or the other mechanical dream car that you had in the past.

기계적인 드림카와는 반대되는 개념이죠.

So actually, you may be surprised I'm actually not a car guy,

사실 제가 자동차 업계 종사자가 아니라고 하면 놀랄 수도 있겠네요.

몸 속에 피 대신 휘발유가 흐르거나 하지 않습니다.

so I don't have petrol running in my veins or something.

So I’m actually a software engineer,

저는 사실 소프트웨어 엔지니어입니다.

and I had the pleasure to work in many other industries before,

그리고 다른 산업 분야에서 일할 수 있는 좋은 기회들이 있었죠.

including telecoms, media, phones, TVs, drones, whatever comes to your mind,

통신사, 대중매체, 전화기, TV, 드론 등 알고 계신 모든 분야에서요.

and all of them have already gone through the disruption of software.

이 모든 분야는 이미 소프트웨어 전환기를 거쳤습니다.

And it made massive changes to all of those industries.

So I'm now very proud that I can work with auto companies

who are just at the beginning of this journey.

Now we have been approached, my team and myself, just very recently,

by one of the iconic car brands

to think through the future of that software dream car.

How does it look like?

So we actually co-created something,

그래서 저희는 공동 작업을 시작했고 많은 사람들이 참여했습니다.

and we reached out to a bunch of people,

working with the auto engineers and the designers for sure.

그중에는 자동차 엔지니어와 디자이너들은 물론이고,

But then we also looked at the professors in neuroscience and biomechanics,

신경과학 분야와 생체역학 분야 교수님들,

creative artists, people from science fiction

예술가, 공상 과학 분야 전문가들,

all the way to luxury industries.

심지어 명품 업계 종사자들도 있었습니다.

And we brought it all together in a multidisciplinary perspective,

그렇게 저희는 여러 분야의 관점을 모아봤습니다.

and I'd like to share some of that today.

오늘 그중 일부를 여러분께 말씀드리고자 합니다.

So I hope you are ready for that.

Off we go.

So let's start at the center of the description.

먼저 핵심 내용부터 짚어볼까요.

This is really the core functionality of the car,

말 그대로 자동차의 핵심 기능이요.

당연히 인공지능 운전사가 여러분 대신 차를 운전할 거예요.

and obviously it will have an AI driver driving you around.

Now that AI driver needs to be a factor of ten better than any human,

자, 인공지능 운전사는 사람보다 10 배 이상 뛰어나야 합니다.

which means less than one fatality per one billion miles traveled.

16억 km 주행할 때 사고 사망자가 1 명 이하가 되어야 하죠.

This is a very hard problem,

정말 어려운 과제죠.

and the industry has been littered with failures over the past 20 years

자동차 회사들은 지난 20년간 실패를 수없이 거듭해 왔습니다.

to get this done.

But we are very close.

하지만 성공에 거의 가까워졌어요.

And when it does happen,

it will become only one part of the functionality of the vehicle.

The other part of the vehicle

차량의 다른 부분은

is actually going to be the in-car experience all around you

because you will now be driven by the AI driver.

So this is going to be shaped by augmented reality and virtual reality.

Now to show a little bit how this could feel like,

I'd like to just give a glimpse from a movie

that maybe many of you have seen, "Blade Runner 2049."

Fantastic movie,

I hope you all loved it, the ones who saw it.

Now there's one character in there, he's the bad guy,

so I love to talk about him, it's Wallace.

제가 좋아하는 인물인데요. 바로 월레스예요.

And he actually is vision impaired, so he can't see by himself.

월레스는 시각 장애가 있어서 앞을 보지 못합니다.

But he has a set of floating sensors in a room,

하지만 방 안에 떠다니는 센서들이 있어서

and that gives him the ability to see from multiple angles at the same time.

월레스는 동시에 여러 각도로 볼 수 있죠.

Now, it's a bit creepy because it's shown with little bugs floating around.

영화에서는 센서가 주변에 떠있는 작은 벌레 같아서 좀 징그럽죠.

So I don't think that's how it's going to be implemented

그렇다고 미래 자동차에 그런 센서가 부착될 것 같지는 않습니다.

in the software dream car exactly.

But you get the idea that also in the software dream car,

하지만 그와 비슷한 개념으로

소프트웨어 드림카에서도 주변 상황을 볼 수 있게 될 겁니다.

you will be able to actually get like an overlay picture

to the normal reality that will have all kinds of information

여러 정보와 볼거리가 주변 풍경 위에 덧입혀져 보이죠.

and entertainment around you.

And you will come to expect

여러분은 현실 세계에서 목적지를 향해 주행하는 동안

that when you drive in the physical world to a destination,

that you will also want to be in the virtual world

가상 현실에 있고 싶다면 그렇게 할 수도 있을 거예요.

during the same time.

And the vehicle will be the thing,

소프트웨어 드림카 자체가 그 둘 모두 가능한 기계 장치입니다.

the device that takes you to both places.

Now, if I turn it up a little bit and I look at the next layer,

자 다음 부분으로 살짝 넘어가서

I want to talk

성능과 승차감에 대해 이야기해보고자 합니다.

about the performance and the quality.

The software dream car will have basically a computing power

소프트웨어 드림카에 탑재되는 컴퓨터의 성능은 기본적으로

that is about ten times faster than any other device that you have.

여러분이 사용하는 그 어떤 기기보다 열 배는 빠를 것입니다.

And it better does, right?

그러는 게 좋겠죠?

Because I guess we all got very impatient when we push a button in our cars

예를 들어, 자동차에서 버튼을 눌렀는데

and like, nothing happens for five seconds.

5초 동안 아무 반응 없으면 짜증이 날 테니까요.

So you will get really furious if it takes more than a split second

가상 현실에서 진짜 현실로 돌아올 때

to switch from virtual reality to real reality, so to say.

빠르게 전환이 안 되면 정말 짜증 나겠죠.

And what you really want is it should feel more

여러분이 기대하시는 건

사람과 기계가 추는 정교한 춤 같은 경험일 겁니다.

like a well-orchestrated dance between the human and the machine

on precision, very fast, immediate.

정확하고, 아주 빠르고, 신속해야죠.

And the same is true then again, for the AI driving.

AI 운전이 바로 그렇습니다.

If it feels like a choppy ride,

승차감이 좋지 못하고,

like if you are in an Uber from the 2020s,

2020년대 우버 택시를 타는 느낌이라면

this is not the experience you want to have.

그런 경험은 하고 싶지 않겠죠.

여러분은 교통 흐름을 따라 부드러운 주행을 원합니다.

You want it to be smooth, getting beside the traffic

and not like getting stuck all the time.

교통 체증 없이 말이죠.

Then let me go through the last layer on top of this,

그럼 마지막 부분을 살펴보도록 하죠.

which is the one that I find most exciting

제가 가장 설레는 부분인데요.

because this is bringing together the full experience.

모든 경험이 최종 완성되는 지점이기 때문입니다.

And the comparison I'd like to make is a bit like a photograph.

소프트웨어 드림카는 사진에 비유할 수 있습니다.

A photograph can become a piece of art.

사진은 그 자체로 예술 작품이 될 수 있죠.

And it does so because it makes you stop, start thinking, search also for meaning.

왜냐하면 우리 발걸음을 멈추게 하고,

생각하게 하고, 의미를 찾게 하니까요.

And you will have a similar impression with the software dream car

소프트웨어 드림카도 비슷할 겁니다.

because it will be able, when you have downloaded that NFT photograph,

왜냐면 NFT 사진을 다운받으셔서,

hopefully not of a monkey or so,

제발 원숭이 사진이나 그런 거 말고요,

but some other kind of nice photograph,

아름다운 사진을 말이죠,

and you want to put it on the outside of the vehicle,

자동차 바깥에 그걸 도배하고 싶다면

well, you will actually be able to do that, no problem.

그러실 수 있을 거예요, 아무 문제 없죠.

When you are creative and you want to change the functionality of the car,

창의적인 기분이 들어 자동차 기능에 변화를 주고 싶으시다면

well, you can program it, download it,

프로그램하시고 다운받으시면 하고 싶은 대로 할 수 있을 겁니다.

and it will do what you want to do.

다시 말하자면, 자동차 내부와 외부 전부 여러분의 손에 달린 거예요.

So again, you are in control of both the interior

and the exterior experience of the vehicle.

You will also have sensors in all the surfaces,

또 자동차 표면에 센서가 달릴 거예요.

so you can basically imagine

그러니까 상상해보면

the car will be able to sense any tensions in your muscles

여러분 근육의 긴장도뿐만 아니라,

but also any bumps in the road, and it can adjust to both of them.

고르지 못한 도로도 자동차가 감지하고 조정하는 거죠.

Now, what’s actually surprising maybe: the technology is all there,

it's not the barrier.

기술적으론 문제없어요.

We have all the LiDARs, the radars, the cameras, the holograms.

라이다도 있고, 레이더도 있고 카메라나 홀로그램도 있고

We have quantum computers.

양자컴퓨터도 있죠.

We even have brain-computer interfaces,

심지어 뇌-컴퓨터 인터페이스도 있고

and they are operational for many years.

여러 해 동안 상용화돼 왔죠.

People have chips implanted, and it works.

사람에게 칩을 심는 것도 가능하고요.

So why don't we see those software dream cars on the road?

그럼 왜 이 소프트웨어 드림카를 아직 도로에서 볼 수 없는 걸까요?

Well, it's a big step, right,

정말 갈 길이 멀거든요,

if we look at the automotive companies,

자동차 기업들을 보면,

they obviously have managed to get cars on the road for more than 100 years.

100년이 넘도록 자동차들이 도로 위를 달리도록 하고 있어요.

하지만 소프트웨어 드림카는 데이터를 분석할 기술이 필요합니다.

But this step here requires so much new technology understanding data

and the ability to innovate fast

또 빠르게 발전할 수도 있어야 하죠.

that it is a huge step forward for them.

그래서 갈 길이 먼 거예요.

And you have about 15 million people working directly in the industry globally,

전 세계적으로 약 1500만 명이 자동차 산업에서 일하고 있습니다.

plus another 50 to 100 that are in adjacent industries.

거기에 추가로 5000만에서 1억 명이 인접 산업 분야에 일하고 있죠.

And many of them will have to change, retrain, get into the new world.

So it's a long way to go.

And then you have the tech companies well, those guys, they go wild.

They have also made us already addicted to smartphones

and media and so on.

So I'm sure they can make us addicted as well to their car,

그러니 우리를 자동차에도 푹 빠지게 할 거라고 믿어요.

but they shy away from the liabilities because at the end of the day,

this is a life and death product.

So you need to be really careful about this.

So as we think about the future,

I'm totally convinced this will happen very soon, it's around the corner.

Now the question will be: Is this now good or bad?

And that's a fair challenge.

Now, if we put it all together, it's actually complicated.

종합해서 생각해보면, 사실 복잡한 문제입니다.

Because first of all,

that car will mostly be available for the rich few initially.

그 자동차는 애초에 부유한 소수만 구매 가능할 테니까요.

Also, as I said before, it will upend the lives of many people

게다가, 앞서 말했듯 미래 자동차는 많은 삶을 송두리째 바꿀 거예요.

that are especially in mechanical jobs.

특히 기계공학 관련 종사자들의 삶이요.

You will have plenty of new jobs coming along,

새로운 일자리가 많이 생겨날 거예요.

but they tend to be in totally different places

하지만 지금과는 전혀 다른 곳에서

and also in different skills.

전혀 다른 기술이 사용될 거예요.

And also what's going to happen if you make a product more attractive,

그리고 또한 더욱 매력적인 자동차가 나온다면

you will actually have many more of those on the street rather than fewer.

실제로 거리에 차들이 늘면 늘었지 줄 일은 없겠죠.

So the good thing is, again,

자, 좋은 점은, 다시 말씀드리면

you take out the human in the driving

운전에 있어 사람의 몫이 없어져서

so it becomes a little bit more controlled and safe.

좀 더 통제 아래 놓이고 안전해진다는 거예요.

And then what about that “Little Red Corvette” from Prince

그럼 예전 프린스의 노래 “Little Red Corvette” 같은 일들은요?

that we had a bit earlier?

Well, it's also going to be quite different

아마 꽤 다른 상황이 될 거예요.

because the software dream car

소프트웨어 드림카가 말 그대로 여러분의 마음을 읽어낼 테니까요.

will quite literally be able to read your mind,

which is kind of scary.

좀 무섭죠.

But at the same time,

하지만 자동차가 여러분이 원하는 걸 파악하고,

it also is really good at predicting what you want to have

and your preferences, which is kind of nice.

여러분 취향을 읽어낸다는 건 좋은 일이겠죠.

And also the camera that you will have in the car

또 자동차 안에 설치된 카메라가

will actually be able to also detect when that little child has been left

실제로 내부가 뜨거워진 차량에 어린 아이가 남겨져 있음을 감지하고

in the overheated vehicle

and the vehicle is able to basically open the windows,

스스로 창문을 열고, 에어컨을 틀고

put on the air conditioning,

call emergency services and save lives,

구조 신고를 해서 생명을 구하게 될 겁니다.

in their own way.

자동차 스스로 말이죠.

Now, the other big thing I want to point out is,

자, 제가 강조하고 싶은 다른 한 가지 중요한 건,

remember individuality, which is dead today?

지금 차들의 개성이 없다고 한 거 기억하시죠?

I think if we now look into the future,

제 생각에 미래를 내다보면

we will actually see that the software dream car will enable you

소프트웨어 드림카가 실제로 우리 마음대로 만들 수 있는 세계로

to really escape into a world that you can shape on yourself,

나아갈 수 있도록 이끌어줄 거예요.

both digitally and physically.

디지털 측면과 물리적 측면에서요.

It is really up to you to make it your personal experience,

여러분이 어떤 경험을 할지는 여러분께 달려있습니다.

again, in the virtual world and in the real world.

가상 현실이나 진짜 현실 속에서 말이죠.

It's going to be possible in a way

여러분이 전에 보았던 그 무엇보다 훨씬 뛰어난 것이 될지도 모릅니다.

that is way further than anything that you have seen in any recent past.

So if we take this all together,

I guess the question comes down to:

결국에 질문은 이거 같아요.

Are you guys technology optimists or pessimists?

여러분은 기술 낙관론자인가요, 아니면 비관론자인가요?

And really what matters to me is over the next 20 years,

when this software dream car will come to the real world,

이 소프트웨어 드림카가 실제 세상에 모습을 드러낼 때면

it will be a bit like a white sheet of paper.

It’s not good or bad [in] itself,

but it is the largest real-life experiment of AI and humans interacting

대신 AI와 인간이 현실에서 매일 상호작용하는 거대한 실험이 될 겁니다.

on a daily basis.

So I would encourage all of you to embrace it, see the beauty,

그러니까 여러분도 이걸 받아들이고, 그 아름다움을 느끼길 바랍니다.

but also shape it

또 모든 인류에게 이로운 방향으로 발전시켜 나아가기를 바랍니다.

and drive it in a way that it is good for the wider humanity.

And I can only speak for myself to say

솔직히 얘기하면

that I'm really excited about what the future holds for us.

저는 미래가 어떨지 정말 기대됩니다.

But I guess for all of you, the question will be

하지만 정말 궁금한 건 이거예요.

when Rihanna will release a song in '28,
