Now, there are many words containing the letter B

자, B를 포함하는 단어가 많이 있습니다

And sometimes, for some reason, this B is silent.

. 그리고 어떤 이유로 B가 묵음일 때도 있습니다.

Now, let's take a few examples.

이제 몇 가지 예를 들어보겠습니다.

First, we have the word ‘climb’.

먼저 '등반'이라는 단어가 있습니다.

Now there's a ‘b’.

이제 'b'가 있습니다.

You can see it when you spell the word,

단어 철자를 보면

it ends with the letter ‘B’.

문자 'B'로 끝나는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

But can you hear it?

Listen to me. ‘climb’.

No, you can't. You can't hear the letter ‘B’.

Because it's a silent 'B’.

무음 'B'이기 때문이죠.

Another example,

would be the word ‘bomb’.

'폭탄'이라는 단어입니다.

I know you're thinking of the spelling.

나는 당신이 철자를 생각하고 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

There's a ‘B’ at the end of this word.

이 단어 끝에는 'B'가 있습니다.

But again, it's a silent B.

하지만 역시 묵음 B입니다.

In fact, most of the time in English, when a short word ends with the letters ‘mb',

사실 대부분의 영어에서는 짧은 단어가 'mb'로 끝날 때

the ‘b’ is silent.

'b'가 묵음입니다.

Now another example,

the word ‘debt’.

'부채'라는 단어입니다.

Most of my students pronounce it ‘debt’.

대부분의 학생들은 그것을 '부채'라고 발음합니다.

Because they know the spelling of the word

and there's a ‘b’ before this ‘t’.

이 't' 앞에 'b'가 있기 때문입니다.

But it's a silent B, guys.

It's not pronounced, so you actually say ‘Det’.

Now for longer words, again, the letter ‘B’

is sometimes silent, not always.

For example, if I say the word ‘plumber’,

예를 들어 'plumber'라는 단어를 말하면

it's a silent B.

It's not pronounced ‘plum-ber'. It's spelled with a ‘B’, but the ‘B’ is silent.

. 'plum-ber'로 발음되지 않습니다. 철자는 'B'로 되어 있지만 'B'는 묵음입니다.

But, if I say the word ‘crumble’,

하지만 'cumble'이라는 단어를 말하면

the ‘b’ is not silent.

'b'는 묵음이 아닙니다.

You can clearly hear the sound ‘b’, ‘crumble’.

'ㄴ', '크럼블' 소리가 선명하게 들립니다.

So it's not always silent.

그래서 항상 침묵하는 것은 아닙니다.

Another example would be the word ‘subtle’.

또 다른 예는 '미묘한'이라는 단어입니다.

Now ‘subtle’ is spelled with a ‘B’, but the ‘B’ is silent.

Unlike the word ‘subtext‘, ‘subtext’ is spelled with a ‘B’,

'subtext'라는 단어와 달리 'subtext'는 'B'로 표기

but the ‘B’ is pronounced.
