a very common speaking and spelling mistake in English.

영어에서 매우 흔히 발생하는 말하기 및 철자 실수 에 대해 이야기하겠습니다

And we're going to focus on the words, ‘work’ and ‘homework’.

. 그리고 우리는 '일'과 '숙제'라는 단어에 집중할 것입니다.

So the first thing you need to know, When the word ‘work’ is a verb, it can

따라서 가장 먼저 알아야 할 점은 'work'라는 단어가 동사인 경우

3인칭 단수인 경우 's'를 사용할 수 있다는 것입니다.

take an ‘s’, if it's the third-person singular.

So you will say, ‘I work hard.’ ‘He works hard.’

그러면 '열심히 일해요'라고 말할 겁니다. '그는 열심히 일한다.'

Okay? Very common, very normal verb, okay?

좋아요? 아주 흔하고, 아주 평범한 동사죠, 그렇죠?

So it takes an ‘S’ with the third-person singular.

따라서 3인칭 단수에는 'S'가 필요합니다.

That's when ‘work’ is a verb.

그럴 때는 '일하다'가 동사가 됩니다.

Now when you say, ‘I have a lot of work.’

이제 '나 할 일이 많아'라고 하면.

‘work’, in this case, is not a verb. It's a noun.

이 경우 'work'는 동사가 아닙니다. 명사입니다.

And you have to know.

그리고 당신은 알아야합니다.

When work is a noun, it does not take an ‘s’, because there's no plural.

work가 명사인 경우에는 복수형이 없기 때문에 's'를 사용하지 않습니다.

You cannot say, ‘I have a lot of works.’

'작품이 많아요'라고 말할 수는 없습니다.

It’s always singular, because it's an uncountable noun.

셀 수 없는 명사이기 때문에 항상 단수형입니다.

Okay? So, ‘I have a lot of work’

좋아요? 그럼 '할 일이 많아요'

Or you could say, ‘I don't have much work.’, Okay? Because it's uncountable.

라고 할 수도 있고, '할 일이 별로 없어요'라고 할 수도 있겠네요. 셀 수 없을 만큼 많기 때문이죠.

Now it can take a plural form, but only if it means not mental exertion like

이제는 복수형도 가능하지만,

‘I have a lot of work.’

'할 일이 많아요' 같은 정신적인 노력이 아닌 경우에만 가능합니다.

But if it means a series of art pieces or literature pieces.

그러나 그것이 일련의 예술 작품이나 문학 작품을 의미한다면.

And that's the only meaning of the word 'work' that allows you to use the plural form.

그리고 그것이 복수형을 사용할 수 있는 '일'이라는 단어의 유일한 의미입니다.

So for example, you can say, ‘The works of Picasso.’

예를 들어 '피카소의 작품'이라고 말씀해 보세요.

‘The works of Picasso’ meaning ‘The paintings of Picasso’, okay?

'피카소의 작품'은 '피카소의 그림'이라는 뜻이죠, 그렇죠?

So art pieces, that's not the same as ‘I have a lot of work.’

그러니까 예술 작품은 '작품이 많다'는 것과는 다릅니다.

Okay?

Now, when you use the compound noun, ‘homework’,

이제 복합명사 'homework'를 사용하면

it's exactly the same as 'work' as an uncountable noun.

셀 수 없는 명사인 'work'와 완전히 동일합니다.

It's uncountable, okay?

셀 수 없을 만큼 많죠, 그렇죠?

So when you say, ‘I have a lot of homeworks.’, it's wrong.

그래서 '숙제가 많아요'라고 말하면 틀린 것입니다.

You cannot use the plural form. It’s uncountable. You have to say, ‘I have a lot of homework.’

복수형은 사용할 수 없습니다. 셀 수 없을 정도로 많습니다.

'숙제가 많아요'라고 말해야 해요.

If you really want to emphasize the fact that you have many things to do at home,

집에 할 일이 많다는 사실을 꼭 강조하고 싶다면

you can use another word and say, ‘assignment’.

'과제'라고 다른 말로 바꿔 말해 보세요.

You can say, 'I have many assignments.’

'나는 과제가 많다'라고 말할 수 있습니다.

It's the same as 'homework', but it is countable. Okay?

'숙제'와 동일하지만 셀 수 있습니다.

좋아요? 간단히 말해서 'work'라는 동사는 's'를 취합니다. 3인칭 단수라면요.

So in a nutshell, ‘work’ as a verb, just does take an ‘s’.

If it's the third-person singular.

‘work’ as a noun is uncountable, unless it means pieces of art or pieces of literature.

명사로서의 'work'는

예술 작품이나 문학 작품을 의미하지 않는 한 셀 수 없습니다.

And the word ‘homework’ is also uncountable. No plural form.

그리고 '숙제'라는 단어도 셀 수 없습니다.

복수형은 없습니다.
