In today's video, I'm going to talk to you about adverbs of manner.

Adverbs of manner tell you how something happens.

Les adverbes de manière vous disent comment quelque chose se passe.

And they're usually placed after the main verb or after its object.

Et ils sont généralement placés après le verbe principal ou après son objet.

Let's take a look at a few sentences.

Examinons quelques phrases.

‘He swims well.’

« Il nage bien. »

The adverb ‘well’ tells you how he swims and is placed after the main verb ‘swims’.

L'adverbe « bien » indique comment il nage et se place après le verbe principal « nage ».

‘He plays the piano beautifully.’

"Il joue magnifiquement du piano."

The adverb ‘beautifully’ tells you how he plays the piano

L'adverbe "magnifiquement" vous dit comment il joue du piano

and is placed after the piano which is the object of the verb to play.

et se place après le piano qui est l' objet du verbe jouer.

Adverbs of manner are usually placed after the main verb or after the objects.

Les adverbes de manière sont généralement placés après le verbe principal ou après les objets.

For example, ‘He left the room quickly.’

Par exemple, « Il a quitté la pièce rapidement ».

The adverb ‘quickly’ is placed after the object, ‘the room’.

L'adverbe « rapidement » est placé après l' objet, « la pièce ».

Now just so you know, some adverbs not all of them,

but some adverbs, can also be placed before the verb.

So in this case, you can also say,

What's very important for you to know is that an adverb of manner cannot come between a

verb and its direct object.

Okay, so it must be placed either before the main verb,

D'accord, il doit donc être placé soit avant le verbe principal,

or after at the end of the clause.

So let's take a look at a few examples.

Voyons donc quelques exemples.

‘He ate quickly his dinner.’

‘Il a mangé rapidement son dîner.’

Now this sentence is incorrect.

Maintenant cette phrase est incorrecte.

Okay?

D'accord?

‘ate’ is the verb.

'manger' est le verbe.

‘his dinner’ is the direct object of the verb.

« son dîner » est l'objet direct du verbe.

So the adverb ‘quickly’ cannot be placed between those two.

L'adverbe "rapidement" ne peut donc pas être placé entre les deux.

Okay?

So you should say, ‘He ate his dinner quickly.’

D'accord?

Donc, vous devriez dire : "Il a mangé son dîner rapidement."

The adverb is at the end and that's correct.

L'adverbe est à la fin et c'est correct.

Or ‘He quickly ate his dinner.’

Ou "Il a rapidement mangé son dîner".

That's also correct.

C'est également correct.

The adverb is placed before the main verb.

L'adverbe se place devant le verbe principal.

Another example,

Un autre exemple,

‘He gave me gently a hug.’

"Il m'a gentiment fait un câlin."

Now this is incorrect.

Maintenant, c'est incorrect.

You cannot separate the verb ‘give’ from its direct object ‘a hug’.

Vous ne pouvez pas séparer le verbe "donner" de son objet direct "un câlin".

So two correct sentences would be first,

Donc, deux phrases correctes seraient les premières,

‘He gave me a hug gently.’

"Il m'a fait un câlin doucement."

with the adverb at the end of the sentence.

avec l'adverbe à la fin de la phrase.

Or

Ou

‘He gently gave me a hug.’

"Il m'a doucement fait un câlin."

The adverb comes before the verb.

L'adverbe vient avant le verbe.

Here are a few example sentences for you to spot the adverbs of manner.

‘He swam well.’

As you can see, we use the adverb ‘well’.

Comme vous pouvez le voir, nous utilisons l'adverbe "bien".

It tells you how he swam,

Il vous dit comment il a nagé,

And it's placed after the main verb, ‘swam’.

et il est placé après le verbe principal, "nager".

‘The rain felt hard.’

‘La pluie était dure.’

Again, our adverb ‘hard’ tells you how the rain fell,

And is placed after the verb.

‘The children were playing happily.’

Can you see the adverb?

It's ‘angrily’.

How did she slam the door?

And finally,

Et enfin,

‘Slowly she picked up the flower.’

"Lentement, elle a ramassé la fleur."

Can you spot the adverb of manner?

It's ‘slowly’.

C'est "lentement".

And it's at the beginning of the sentence, Because we want to emphasize the manner.

Et c'est en début de phrase, Parce qu'on veut souligner la manière.

And this is also something very common when you read books.

Et c'est aussi quelque chose de très courant lorsque vous lisez des livres.
