English Phrasal Verbs: Get By and Put Up

Yo what is up amigos? Chad here from RealLife English and today I am going to teach you

2 more essential English phrasal verbs. The two phrasal verbs which you are going to learn

today are the phrasal verbs...

So the first phrasal verb to get by. First let's look at the conjugation of get, get

is to...

Sometimes people will also use got in the participle, like...

But often it would also be gotten like...

Have you received? But to get by on something, when used as the phrasal verb, to get by means

to be able to survive with the bare minimum, survive with very little. An example can be,

students without jobs have a pretty hard time getting by, students without jobs have a pretty

hard time getting by. That means that they don't have much money so it's hard for them

to survive in the world buying food or doing whatever other things they want to be doing.

They have a hard time getting by. Me personally, it's really hard to get by without coffee.

It's really hard to get by without coffee. Which means it's really hard to go through

the day, to pass through the day without drinking coffee because I feel really tired.

And the next phrasal verb today is to put up with someone or something. So to put up

with just means to tolerate, to be able to tolerate a person or a thing, maybe a noise.

It's really hard putting up with that background noise, or the traffic. Another example could

be a question, how do you put up with that kind of behavior? So that means how do you

tolerate that kind of behavior, maybe if you are a school teacher and one of your students

is yelling and behaving really badly you can ask that person, how do you put up with that?

How do you put up with that behavior? Maybe the teacher can say I can't put up with it

anymore. I can't put up with it anymore.

Ok so now I'm going to use those two expressions, those two phrasal verbs in different phrases

but I'm going to say the very naturally and focusing on specific elements of connected

speech the way we join our words together. So I'm going to say each phrase three times,

try to listen and imitate exactly how I say it.

OK I know that was very very fast and quite difficult but just remember the more and more

you practice this the easier it's going to get, all you have to do is repeat and repeat

and you are going to notice your mouth starts to adapt to those new sounds really quickly.
