English Phrasal Verbs: Freak Out and Settle Down

Hey, good morning everyone, what's up? I'm Chad from RealLife English and today I have

another video lesson teaching you two really common English phrasal verbs. So the two phrasal

verbs I am going to be teaching you guys today are the phrasal verbs to...

So the first phrasal verb to freak out, so let's look at the word freak. Freak can be used

as an adjective or a noun, in this sense as an adjective we say freaky, 'that's pretty

freaky' or 'that guy, or girl, is a freak.' Generally not a very nice thing to say but

if you call someone a freak, it means they are very strange or peculiar a little out

of the normal, maybe you might say. They're a freak.

Freaky could also mean they have an awkward way of communicating, 'that guy is kind of

freaky' he doesn't have very good social skills.

And to freak out the phrasal verb we are learning today, to freak out, means to get really scared

or get kind of crazy, I freaked out when I heard the news. So that means you had a very

scary, or you were scared with your reaction, FREAK OUT. To give you an example, Mike really

freaked out when he saw the big spider on the wall, he freaked out when he say the big

spider on the wall.

And our phrasal verb number two for this lesson is to settle down, to settle down. Often the

word settle would be pronounced with the American 'D' seddle, seddle, seddle down.

So the word settle what does it mean? To settle, ee ahhh, it means to get comfortable, in a

broad sense, but I mean for example if a country has just been discovered you have the early

settlers, the settlers are the first people that go and start living there. You know they're

getting comfortable in their new land. And to settle down means a very similar thing,

the settle down can, it can be to calm down. If I, if somebody is being really loud or

hyperactive you can say, yo dude... settle down man, settle down. And another way to

use settle down would be if a couple, or a man and a woman were to get married you can

say that they are settling down, which means that they are no longer living that party

lifestyle, the single person lifestyle. They get married, sorry, they got married, they're

having a kid and they're settling down.

Ok, so they are the two phrasal verbs from this lesson, the two opposite phrasal verbs

to freak out!!!! and to settle down. Remember learning them as opposites are a really really

good way to help you memorize them much easier. And now let's quickly go to the phrase which

is the most important part of this lesson. I'm going to say a phrase using both of these

phrasal verbs, and the idea is for you to memorize the phrase that is going to help

you memorize the two phrasal verbs. But also, let's work on the pronunciation of the phrase.

So, listen and repeat after me, or even with me.
