Okay students, let's get started.

Actual and actually are two words that are very similar,

but have slightly different uses and meanings.

Let's look at these words and some examples

of how they are used in English.

Actual means real.

And actually means really or in fact.

Both of these words can be used

to correct mistakes or misunderstandings in English.

For example, "She said her age was 25,

but her actual age was 23."

"I know your name, it's Jeff."

"Actually, my name is John."

You can use actually to make things clearer

or to introduce unexpected information.

For example, "I got a new pet.

"Actually, it's a cat."

"He ate so much food that he actually got sick."

You can also use actually to tell someone about bad news.

"How are you feeling today?"

"Well, actually, I feel a bit sick."

Actually can also be used to say

that someone's expectations were wrong.

For example, "Did you have a good day today?"

"Actually, no.

"Today was a bad day."

Language tip!

If you speak a European language,

the English word "actual" may look similar to words

in your language, such as these.

These words do not mean actual in English.

These words mean current, at present, or now.

Be careful with these words,

because they do not mean the same thing.
