Learn English by Mirroring - Learn English by Yourself

hello students welcome back great to see  you here this is the second lesson in the  

tips and tricks series to learn english by  yourself today i'll teach you about learning  

english through mirroring what is mirroring have  a look what i made new friends get over it what  

i made new friends get over it sorry about my  acting but that was an example of mirroring  

many english learners say it's difficult to  find an english-speaking partner we all know  

having a partner to practice with is very  important but there are some ways that you  

can learn english speaking by yourself the last  video i made in a series was about learning  

english through shadowing and you can find a  link to that video in the description shadowing  

and mirroring are not the same i'll explain that  later what is mirroring bearing is a careful study  

of a video of a model speaker of english including  both verbal what they're saying and non-verbal  

their body language those behaviors as the  learner you watch the video and practice mirroring  

or repeating exactly what the speaker  is doing you mirror what the model does  

in a piece of video i suggest using shorter  video clips when you first start mirroring  

later you can add longer clips mirroring takes  time and practice usually about one to three  

weeks for each piece of video that you want  to mirror so who should you mirror the model  

you choose should be either a native english  speaker or a highly intelligible non-native  

english speaker the model doesn't have to be a  native english speaker but they should have a  

high level of english you should choose someone  that you enjoy watching like a youtube host  

or an actor or actress or a comedian so how do  you mirror first analyze what you are watching  

start by understanding what the video is about  what's the big picture of the video ask yourself  

who is the speaker what are they trying to do  what are they trying to achieve in the video  

are they trying to teach you something are  they trying to inspire you are they trying to  

persuade you what speaking characteristics is your  model using what's the speed of their speaking  

fast slow what's the volume of their  speaking is it loud is it soft do they  

take pauses when they're speaking like with the  audio you study and shadowing when mirroring  

it is important to understand what is being  said make sure you understand what is being said  

and the vocabulary that you are listening  to now you can analyze a short segment  

of your model's speech focus on stress rhythm  intonation pronunciation what is rhythm rhythm  

is the pacing of english is there a certain rhythm  that your model repeats when speaking spend time  

practicing your model's video for memorization  and then adding nonverbal gestures and movements  

facial expressions to fully mirror the model  mirroring takes time and practice mirroring  

is different than shadowing shadowing uses audio  that you repeat back after a short delay mirroring  

you're studying the movements of the speaker how  they speak mirroring takes time why should you  

include mirroring in your study plan you can  improve your rhythm intonation your non-verbal  

communication right body language when you're  speaking english and overall confidence when  

speaking english you can see how the different  aspects of pronunciation work together to make the  

speaker more effective when speaking and if you  do mirroring write it's very enjoyable let me show

the video i just modeled the speaker takes a  long pause so i took a long pause i mirrored
