Where do I put the adverb?

Hi, my name is Rebecca, and in today's lesson we're going to talk about adverbs.

Now, an adverb is a word that gives you more information about the verb, tells you how

the verb did something.

And what we're going to discuss today is the correct order to use the adverb in a sentence,

the word order for the adverb.

Now, different kinds of adverbs can go in different places in the sentence, but we're

going to talk about four specific kinds of adverbs that sometimes cause difficulty for

ESL and EFL students.

So let's look on the board, okay?

Adverbs of manner that tell you how something was done.

For example, badly, slowly, well, these adverbs need to all go at the end of the sentence.

Basically, all of the words we're going to talk about today, all of the adverbs we're

going to talk about today, go at the end of a sentence.

They do not go between the verb and an object, they go instead at the end of a sentence.

So adverbs of manner, adverbs of place, such as here, there, and so on, goes at the end

of a sentence.

Adverbs of quantity, like a bit, a lot, and so on.

Adverbs of time, such as today or every day, alright?

Let's use these in a sentence so that you understand well how to use these.

You speak English well.

Now the adverb here is the word "well".

The mistake that English learners sometimes make is they say, "You speak well English."

Alright?

That's not correct.

It needs to go at the end of the sentence.

You is the subject, speak is the verb, English is the object, and well is the adverb of manner

that's going at the end of the sentence.

You speak English well, not you speak well English, okay?

Next one.

They sell postcards here.

They sell postcards here.

We do not say, "They sell here postcards."

We say, "They sell postcards here."

Here is an adverb of place, it goes at the end of the sentence, okay?

Next one.

We like the movie a lot.

We like the movie a lot.

A lot is an expression of quantity, it's an adverb of quantity.

It goes at the end of the sentence.

We do not say, "We liked a lot the movie."

Right?

We should say, "We liked the movie a lot."

Next one.

He is leaving for Japan today.

Today is an adverb of time, it belongs at the end of the sentence.

We do not say, "He is leaving today for Japan."

That might be used sometimes, but it is preferable to use all of these at the end of the sentence.

That way you won't have any mistakes.
