Learning Common English Phrases - Make Yourself at Home meaning

Hi there. Welcome to Harry's World of Words and Phrases and English in a

Minute. We're coming back to the topic of everyday English. English we use everyday

and as I've said before there's not a real correlation or connection between

the words but these are phrases we use in English all of the time. Let me give

you another example - make yourself at home. Okay. So you don't want somebody to

come into your house and live there or stay there longer than you wish but we

say this for guests when they come into our house to make them relax. So make

yourself at home, have a cup of tea. You have a cup of coffee, something to eat.

Okay. We can also use it in our office because we say make yourself at home

even though it's not the home. It's the actual office. So sit down and relax and

we talk about whatever you wish to talk about. And occasionally we use and make

yourself at home in a sarcastic way. So let's take the example where you come

into your office and there's somebody already sitting there drinking coffee

with their feet up. You say: "well make yourself at home, why don't you?" Okay. So
