Learn Different Ways to Use the Word "way" in English :)

There are several ways to use the word "way" in English.

Il existe plusieurs façons d'utiliser le mot "way" en anglais.

In this video let's take a look at several different uses of the word "way".

One of the first uses of the word "way" is with two phrases that can be used to cheer

L'une des premières utilisations du mot "way" est avec deux phrases qui peuvent être utilisées pour encourager

or encourage someone.

The first phrase is:

Way to go!

Bravo !

And the second phrase is:

That's the way!

So let's imagine you're watching your favourite football team, and you want to cheer or encourage

You could yell:

You can do it!

Or you could yell:

A second way to use the word "way" is to describe distance using the phrase:

Une deuxième façon d'utiliser le mot « chemin » est de décrire la distance en utilisant la phrase :

"All the way"

« Tout le chemin ».

You could say things like:

Vous pourriez dire des choses comme :

He ran all the way to the library.

Il a couru jusqu'à la bibliothèque.

Or, He drove all the way to Toronto.

Ou, Il a conduit jusqu'à Toronto.

In this phrase when we say "all the way" we mean that they drove the entire distance,

Dans cette phrase, lorsque nous disons "tout le chemin", nous voulons dire qu'ils ont parcouru toute la distance,

or they went the entire distance.

He went all the way to Toronto.

A third use of the word way can be when talking about the path or direction someone is going.

The phrase "go the other way" could be used to tell someone to turn around.

L'expression « aller dans l'autre sens » pourrait être utilisée pour dire à quelqu'un de faire demi-tour.

You could say to tell someone that they can't come forward, but they need to turn around

and go in the opposite direction.

et aller dans la direction opposée.

We also use the word "way" when using phrases like "it is on the way"

Nous utilisons également le mot « chemin » lorsque nous utilisons des expressions telles que « c'est en route ».

You could say:

I can pick up milk on my way to work because the store is in between my home and the place

And the third way to use it with paths or distances is the phrase "to have lost your

This basically indicates that the person is lost.

A fourth way to use the word "way" in English is to describe a method for doing something,

or to describe the method that someone did do something.

So you could use phrases like:

The way to do it.

I know the way to make bread.

Je connais la façon de faire du pain.

Or to describe that there are several ways to do something.

Ou pour décrire qu'il y a plusieurs façons de faire quelque chose.

There are many ways to make bread.

Il existe de nombreuses façons de faire du pain.

Or to describe how someone is doing something.

Ou pour décrire comment quelqu'un fait quelque chose.

So you could say:

Ainsi, vous pourriez dire :

I like the way you sing.

j'aime la façon dont vous chantez.

And finally there's just a few more phrases that aren't in a group specifically, but we

say things in English like the phrase:

And you can use the phrase "by the way" to start a sentence.

It's kind of an introduction to a sentence.

You could also say the phrase:

Vous pourriez aussi dire la phrase :

Way too fast.

Beaucoup trop vite.

You can describe someone as driving way too fast which means they are over the speed limit.

Vous pouvez décrire quelqu'un comme conduisant beaucoup trop vite, ce qui signifie qu'il dépasse la limite de vitesse.

Or you could say that he eats his food way too fast.

Ou vous pourriez dire qu'il mange trop vite.

Indicating that he doesn't just eat the food fast.

And lastly you could say:

If you were carrying something heavy and someone was blocking your path you could say:

Asking them to move and to clear the direction that you want to go in.

Leur demander de se déplacer et de dégager la direction dans laquelle vous voulez aller.
