Day 7 - Reducing AT, AN, CAN - Understanding Fast Speech in English

Small words like AT and AN are function words.

AT, AN 같은 작은 단어는 기능어입니다.

They don't carry a lot of content in a sentence or phrase,

그들은 문장이나 구에 많은 내용을 담지 않기 때문에

so often we reduce them.

우리는 종종 그것들을 줄입니다.

We use weaker vowel sounds.

우리는 약한 모음 소리를 사용합니다.

We use a schwa /ə/.

It's a very relaxed sound.

So AT can sound like /ət/.

at noon - /et nun/

AN will sound like /ən/.

CAN is also reduced

CAN도 줄입니다

It's used as a helping verb, and we reduce it

조동사로 쓰이고

in a question or in a full statement when the main verb is still present.

의문문이나 본동사가 그대로 있을 때 완전한 문장에서 줄입니다.

I asked you, "Can you find a few minutes?"

제가 물었습니다. "잠시 시간을 내주시겠습니까?"

/kən/...Instead of /kæn/ ... /kən/

/kən/.../kæn/ 대신 ... /kən/

Can you find a few minutes?

잠시 시간을 내주시겠습니까?

Note how there's variation when Americans reduce CAN.

미국인이 CAN을 줄일 때 차이가 있음에 유의하십시오.

Either we use the schwa,

which sounds like "uh." /kən/

"어"처럼 들리는 슈와를 사용하거나. /kən/

Or we use a short I, like in the word "it." /kɪn/

또는 "it"이라는 단어에서처럼 짧은 I를 사용합니다. /kɪn/
