LOVE! 💕 From Pickup Lines to Marriage Proposals💖 Vocabulary with JenniferESL

Some of you know that I've been married for many years.

But I still recall when I was young and single.

I have memories of different guys who expressed their interest in sweet and special ways.

There are definitely a number of ways to steal someone's heart, and maybe by the end of this video,

you single people out there

will get some ideas of what may or may not work for you.

And if you're married, well, then maybe you'll share some of your memories from your single days.

Let's start with what never did and never will work with me:

stupid pick-up lines.

Lines, like, "Hey, babe. What's your sign?"

A pickup line is a single line, something short that someone says to express romantic interest in a stranger.

Typically a guy goes up to a lady and delivers a pickup line.

He says something funny, clever, or otherwise memorable with the hope that it will start a conversation

and lead to a romantic relationship.

Pickup lines are associated with bars and nightclubs, but a guy could use a pickup line almost anywhere.

Some people meet for the first time at a grocery store or a cafe.

Search online for best and worst pickup lines. Many of them will make you smile or laugh.

There are some cute but silly ones like,

"Honey, let me check the tag on your shirt. I want to see if you were made in heaven."

Words that can have more of an effect on me come from poetry.

Some guys are really good at reciting poetry. If not a whole poem, then at least a few lines.

Some can even write their own verses.

Ladies, have you ever had someone write a poem for you or about you?

That's special.

You don't have to speak in rhyme to win someone's heart.

William Shakespeare knew how to write about love. From Romeo and Juliet

we have these famous lines:

My bounty is as boundless as the sea.

My love is deep. the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.

Taking it one step further is a serenade. That's a song sung to a loved one...

usually at night. A guy might serenade a pretty lady in a garden.

Well, I feel lucky to say that I've had poems and even a serenade in my life.

But romantic gestures can be without words.

Can you show your warm feelings without talking or writing? Of course you can. As they say,

"Actions speak louder than words."

I remember getting a dozen helium balloons delivered to me in high school, and more than once

I received beautiful long-stemmed roses.

In the U.S., you can easily have a dozen red roses delivered to the one you love.

You can sign your name on the card or you can send the roses anonymously.

You can write that it's from a secret admirer.

A secret admirer is someone who's not ready to reveal their identity yet, but they want to express their love.

If you're not hiding your identity and you want to get to know someone better, you go out on a date.

How do you ask someone out on a date?

Well, like pickup lines, they can be romantic funny, clever, silly...

There are many different ways to ask someone out, but the basic question could be,

"Would you like to go out with me sometime?"

"Would you like to have dinner with me?"

Hopefully, the invitation will be accepted, not rejected.

Once you start seeing someone regularly, we say you're dating. You're a couple... an item.

How long should a couple date before getting married? What do you think?

Would you ever go out on a blind date?

That's when a friend or a relative sets you up with someone

you've never met. You go out and you see if you're a good fit for each other.

So would you go out on a blind date?

Well, the biggest declaration of love has to be a marriage proposal. In the U.S.,

there's a tradition of a man asking a woman for her hand in marriage.

But there's no rule that says a woman can't propose to a man.

Any adult can propose to another adult, and if they love each other enough and want to spend the rest of their lives together,

they can get married.

The simple question is, "Will you marry me?"

Tradition says you should go down on one knee and present a ring, an engagement ring. Then pop the question.

Some people want to make their marriage proposal a very memorable event. Search online for

"marriage proposals," and you'll see some very creative and elaborate ideas.

My favorite is the flash mob proposal at IKEA, the store. Check it out.

You'll see how a young man was head over heels about his girlfriend.

So he arranged a very special surprise for her, and she was crazy about him.

So there's a very sweet ending.
