we are going to review two different news  articles to help you learn advanced grammar,  

add natural expressions to your  speech, and improve your pronunciation.

Let's get started.

First, I'll read the headline.

By turning Twitter into acts, Elon Musk  risks killing billions in brand value.

Did you hear that?

Twitter is no longer called Twitter?

It is now called X.

So as you can see on this  platform, this is the logo.

The new X logo, which replaces the  bird that everybody knows from Twitter.

So by turning Twitter into X, in this case,  

when you turn something into something, it  means you transform it or you change it.

So Elon Musk transformed Twitter into X.

It is no longer Twitter, it is now called.

XI wrote that definition for you.

And here's an everyday example.

I turned these old towels into a beautiful quilt.

So I took these old towels and I transformed them.

I changed them into a beautiful quilt.

And then you have a verb.

But what do you notice about the verb?

It's in the gerund form, the ING form.

That's because the verb risk is a gerund verb.

So the verb that comes after  risk will be in the ING form.

For example, I could say you can't risk, and now  whatever verb I need is going to be in the gerund.

So you can't risk what, Missing  the meeting, for example?

Or you can't risk missing this lesson  that you're watching right now.

So notice this verb is in the ING  form because risk is a gerund verb.

All right, let's continue on and learn  about how Elon Musk turned Twitter into X.

It's rare for corporate brands  to become so intertwined with  

everyday conversation that they become verbs.

And this is actually really interesting  that they said this, that they become verbs.

For example, the company Google.

You commonly use this as a verb.

I googled it.

Just Google it.

You're taking the company name and  you're actually using it as a verb,  

which is something that we do with  very popular social media sites.

So you can use Google as a verb.

But remember, because it's a verb, you have  to conjugate it with your time reference.

I googled it.

That's in the past.

Or she what's apt me sometimes, when it  doesn't look very good to spell it as an Ed,  

we do an apostrophe D to show the past.

Simple.

She whatsapped me.

He retweeted my picture.

All of these are verbs, and  all of them are in the past.

Simple.

It's rarer still.

$20 billion.

That's how you say it orally.

And notice billion.

There is no S but dollars.

This is where you verbally say S  with in plural, dollars, dollars.

That's how you say it.

Orally OK.

His move.

His strategic move, His move.

This is simply saying what he's planning to do.

Musk's move, wiped out, wipe out.

This means to eliminate.

But it has the the feeling  like it happened quickly.

Oh, they wiped it out, they  eliminated it, they got rid of it.

And it happened quite quickly or dramatically.

So his move wiped out anywhere  between 4 billion and $20 billion  

in value according to analysts and brand agencies.

It took 15 plus years.

When you see this 15 plus, it can  be written as plus as an actual  

word or you can use the plus symbol  symbol and you can say 15 plus years.

So in this case, if you use the  symbol, you don't have a dash,  

it would just be 15 plus because  technically the dash looks like a -.

So you that would be very confusing.

15 plus years, four of as they have it here,  

15 dash plus it took 15 plus years and  of course that means more than 15 years.

So when you say 15 plus, maybe it's 16 or 17.

But because we generally like to  talk in numbers of zero and five,  

it sounds better to say 15 plus rather than 16.

And you see this a lot on resumes or  people talking about their experience.

I have 15 plus years of experience  teaching English for example.

It took 15 plus years to earn  that much equity worldwide.

The equity is referring to the  value, the company's value,  

and this is just the equity that they wiped out  that they eliminated by turning Twitter into X.

The company is obviously worth more than  that if if the move wiped this much out.

So the equity is how much it is worth and it took  15 plus years to earn that much equity worldwide.

So losing Twitter as a brand name  is a significant financial hit.

In this case, the word hit means loss loss.

So you could say we took a hit during COVID.

This means you had a financial loss during  COVID, especially in the context of a business,  

in a context of a business, we this  means my business, our business.

So our company, our business  took a hit during COVID.

That means financially, you  can use this in an everyday  

context if you don't have a company as well.

You might say we sold our home, but we took a hit.

We took a hit, which means you lost  financially on the sale of your home.

So you didn't make as much money as you  could have made if you had sold it at

information, so information about when he bought  the company and how much it was worth at the time.

So that's a very important point to  remember, especially when you're writing  

So Musk and then this word  is conjugated with Musk.

Now here let's take a look at significantly,  

because they used it twice, significant financial  hit here, this is being used as an adjective,  

a significant financial hit, and  then significantly is an adverb.

Significant, significantly are both more  formal, advanced ways of saying a big or a lot.

Twitter took a big financial hit.

So it can mean big in quantity or a lot  depending on how it's used in context.

But it is a more advanced way.

If I were in a job interview, I would  not say I have a lot of experience.

I would say I have significant  experience because that sounds  

a lot more professional than saying a lot.

I have a lot of experience.

But when I'm communicating with  my friends, I would absolutely  

use a lot because significant sounds too  formal for communication with my friends.

So I have a lot of experience.

This means I have significant experience.

OK, let's continue by Monday  morning, a new black X logo.

So remember, that's what we saw in the image here.

So if you log into Twitter now, oh look, I'm just  noticing underneath he does have the urlx.com.

It simply is a formal way of saying  they're visible on so you can see the  

decals on small businesses and websites  alongside Instagram and Facebook logos.

It's conjugated in the present simple with meta.

Now notice here when you say the longer form first  quarter, you have to use the article the the first  

quarter because first is an ordinal number and  we always use articles with ordinal numbers.

Don't forget the this is required grammatically.

So now let's go back.

Meta not only had its second straight  quarter, a positive revenue growth.

So what does this mean?

It's second straight quarter  when you have straight.

When you're talking about  quantity, it means continuous.

This means continuous.

You can also put the word straight.

There's just a little bit  of flexibility in placement.

And again, that means 10 days in a row,  which means continuous 10 continuous days.

So second quarter straight.

So that means Q1 and Q2 or Q2 and Q3 or  Q3 and Q4 of positive revenue growth.

So the revenue is the money that they earn and  

revenue is the money that they  earn before they pay expenses.

OK.

So revenue is the money that comes  in but before they pay expenses.

But it also exceeded expectations.

So an expectation, this is a prediction  of how well you think you'll do.

So maybe Meta expected to earn $100 million  because it's a massive company, $100 million.

That was their expectation, but if they exceeded  it, it means they earned more than they expected.

So they earned 110 or $200 million,  

but it also exceeded expectations with its first  quarter of double digit growth since Q 4/20/21.

This is saying in Q 4/20/21 which remember  is the last three months of the year.

So October, November, December, that's  Q4, October, November, December.

In Q 4/20/21 it had double digit growth.

So single digit growth would be 1 to 9%.

Gross is single digit growth  because there's only one digit.

So what is double digit growth?

I'm sure this is pretty easy for you.

10 to 99% is double digit growth is  obviously possible to have triple  

digit growth or quadruple digit growth possible.

It would be great, I'm sure if you're a business.

So this is double digit growth.

So it's saying in Q 4/20/21  it had double digit growth  

and now it has also had double digit growth.

But the period between these two times  it didn't have double digit growth.

Because this article is about meta.

Meta just created this new social  media platform called Threads,  

which is a direct competitor to Twitter.

So I asking you, what's your opinion on  Facebook meta now competing against Twitter?

Okay, let's continue with two straight quarters,  

a positive revenue growth and the first quarter  of double digit revenue growth since late 2021.

This is very repetitive of  what we just learned, so you

It can be a positive or a negative adjective,  

and this just describes the performance  of the beginning of something.

So let's say you're in a new class,  you're learning how to play guitar.

You might say I'm off to a  great start, great start.

So you're describing the  performance of the beginning,  

and in this case, it's the beginning of learning.

Guitar.

It can be the beginning of anything.

Our vacation is off to a rough start.

A rough start would be negative.

Our vacation is off to a rough start because  

our flight was delayed for five  hours and then they lost our bags.

So that's the start of your vacation  and it's not going very well.

So you can say off to a rough start.

They lost our bags, our hotel was terrible.

Remember you can choose any  adjective you want to replace X.

So Metas year of efficiency  is off to a strong start.

If the company can continue this momentum  into the next two quarters, that being Q2  

and Q3 or Q3 and Q4, it will exit 2023 in a  much better position than it entered the year.

And that's how it's bouncing back.

Remember, it was here, but then  it went down, but now it's back.

Native speakers almost always  shorten this word advertisement  

automation tools as well as good  momentum for advertiser demand on reels.

While its competitor Snap,  I've never heard of Snap.

Clearly a competitor to Meta  

while his competitor Snap has yet to  emerge from its own advertising slump.

Notice I said ad is short for advertisement,  

but here we have advertiser,  who is the person advertising?

And then advertising is the verb.

But for advertisement.

This is the one we shorten us emerge  from its own advertising slump.

A slump.

This is when there's a decline.

So slump.

Visualize going down, and it goes down  in terms of price, sales or volume.

In this case, it's advertising slump.

And remember you have your verb  to be that you have to conjugate.

In this case is conjugated with the subject our  vacation it and the time reference is the past.

So this is the past.

Simple.

Our vacation was off to a rough start.

Not good.

So a negative situation, but we turned it around.

So we took our vacation from negative to positive.

So just visualize the top of the  mountain when you think of peak.

So the highest it's facing significant  competition from TikTok and Amazon.

And while Meta may be talking less about the  Metaverse these days, it is still determined  

to make the Metaverse a reality and the  massive losses in its Reality Labs division.

So I guess this is the name of  the group within the company that  

works on the Metaverse, the Reality Labs division.

But because it has such a great  Q2, it was off to a strong start.

It won't be as severe.

good momentum for advertiser demand on reels.

While its competitor Snap has yet to  emerge from its own advertising slump,  

Meta has been able to successfully  turn around its business 3.
