Common Mistakes in English - Choose & Choice

Hi there, my name is Rani and today I'm going to teach you about choosing something.

It's your decision to make.

Let's look at this verb.

This is the verb in the present.

Notice there are two "o's".

The way we pronounce this is "choose".

It sounds like "choose".

The way we pronounce this in the past is "chose".

It sounds like "chose".

So we have "choose" and "chose".

These are both verbs.

So you can say, "I will choose my favorite flavor of ice cream."

This is in the present.

If you want to talk about making a decision in the past, you're going to have to use "chose".

So "I chose a new hat."

So "I will choose" is future, this is the present tense, and "I chose" is the past tense.

To make it easier, I can write this, "Yesterday I chose a new hat."

The one that is just a little bit more confusing is the word "choice".

So I've said that "choose" is a verb.

"Made."

"I" is your subject, "made" is the verb.

So usually in a sentence we have a noun, "Oh, a noun!"

So if you want to use "choice", you always have to use a verb with "choice".

"I made a choice."

This is the same as "You picked something."

So be careful when you use this.

I hear a lot of people saying, "I choice my favorite ice cream."

"I chose my favorite ice cream."

You can make a choice, or you can choose something.

One is a noun, and these two are both lovely verbs.
