and they can add color to your spoken English.

Basically a phrasal verb is a verb

Sometimes two prepositions, a bit like to look up

and it has a literal meaning, like look up.

Sometimes phrasal verbs have an idiomatic meaning.

To look up a word means to find the word in a dictionary.

You can also have to look up to someone.

I look up to my father, meaning I admire

Most importantly, phrasal verbs will make your English

Now, it's important to notice most phrasal verbs have two

Here, we are looking at to wind someone up, meaning

For example, stop winding up your sister.

When I was a kid, my brother used

So it's kind of joking, right? A bit like pulling your leg.

Next, number three, to do away with.

So this one has two prepositions, right?

The verb to do, and then away, preposition one

This is a slightly more formal phrasal verb.

It can be used both in speaking and writing,

and it means to abolish, to get rid of

or to eliminate something.

Very often we use it for talking about rules or regulations

For example, at last, the local government have done away

Number four, to put up,

it has many meanings, but here we are looking at

For now, let's get in to phrasal verb number five.

Number five, to fall for.

Actually, there are two meanings here,

which are very closely related.

I'm gonna look at both.

To fall for somebody means

that you develop romantic feelings for that person.

A bit like to fall in love, okay?

For example, she fell for him the moment she met him,

and then three months later they got married,

Now, if you fall for something,

it means that you are tricked

Now to fall for, typically you can fall for a scam,

It's a bit like you fall into the trap, okay?

For example, I will say very strongly, don't fall

Next, number six, to fall out.

An example for you, Tom and Zoe were married,

Let's go to number seven.

Okay number seven, to make up has two meanings.

I'm gonna look at both of them here.

The first one is to become friends after a disagreement.

So if you fall out with someone, you can make up,

you can make up with someone

and you can make up with each other,

if it's two people, which is normally the case.

For example, if I ever fall out with a friend,

Next, number eight is to be up for something

or something that might be difficult.
