Sometimes when we make just a little pronunciation mistake,

it can change the meaning of the whole sentence. When we put the wrong stress in the word,

it can create some kind of confusion. If I say:

definitely don’t understand what am I TRYING TO SAY.

This is because I put the wrong syllable stress in all these words. 

Isso ocorre porque coloquei a sílaba tônica errada em todas essas palavras.

It’s an important lesson where you can enjoy some useful information. 

É uma lição importante onde você pode desfrutar de algumas informações úteis.

But do you know what a syllable means? A syllable is a small unit, 

Mas você sabe o que significa uma sílaba? Uma sílaba é uma pequena unidade,

a part of the word that has only one vowel sound.

Every word has one or more syllables. Syllables are stressed differently. 

Cada palavra tem uma ou mais sílabas. As sílabas são enfatizadas de forma diferente.

Now I’m gonna give you some words and I want you to say 

Agora vou te dar algumas palavras e quero que você diga

how many syllables the word has. If we clap our hands every time 

quantas sílabas a palavra tem. Se batermos palmas sempre que

we hear a vowel sound, we can count the number of syllables. 

ouvirmos o som de uma vogal, podemos contar o número de sílabas.

orange CLAP orange

two syllables state

state There’s only one syllable in this word 

estado Há apenas uma sílaba nesta palavra

information in-for-ma-tion

Here we have four syllables A lot of people think 

Aqui temos quatro sílabas Muitas pessoas pensam

that they need to pronounce all the letters in the word clearly 

que precisam pronunciar todas as letras da palavra com clareza

and emphasize each syllable because they want other people 

e enfatizar cada sílaba porque elas querem que outras pessoas

easily understand what they are trying to SAY. But this is not the case in American English. 

entendam facilmente o que estão tentando DIZER. Mas esse não é o caso do inglês americano.

When we have the word and we break it down into syllables, 

Quando temos a palavra e a dividimos em sílabas,

then we can think about  which syllable is stressed. 

podemos pensar em qual sílaba é tônica. O

Stress is extremely important because some syllables are pronounced longer and louder, 

estresse é extremamente importante porque algumas sílabas são pronunciadas mais longas e mais altas,

and some syllables are shorter and lower. 

e algumas sílabas são mais curtas e mais baixas.

So we have stressed syllables  and unstressed syllables.

orange The first syllable is stressed.

information The stress is on the third syllable.

It’s not inforMAtion, it’s information.

Rule 1

In most two syllable-nouns stress is on the first syllable

Rule 2 Two syllable adjectives

Most two syllable verbs have the  stress on the Second syllable 

maioria dos verbos de duas sílabas tem  a tônica na segunda sílaba

You know that most English  verbs have only ONE syllable 

Você sabe que a maioria dos verbos em inglês tem apenas UMA sílaba

for instance run, work, play, eat. But when we have the verbs with two syllables like 

por exemplo correr, trabalhar, brincar, comer . Mas quando temos os verbos com duas sílabas como

admit refuse 

admitir recusar

enjoy regret 

desfrutar lamentar

You should be able to hear the  stress on the second syllable. 

Você deve ser capaz de ouvir o estresse na segunda sílaba.

Let’s repeat. admit 

Vamos repetir. admitir

refuse enjoy 

recusar aproveitar

regret But there’s  

lamentar Mas

always be exceptions, for example – open It’s a verb, but We have the stress on the

There’re some words that  either can be a noun or a verb

Which one is correct? If the word is a noun, 

Qual é a correta? Se a palavra for um substantivo,

the stress is gonna be on the first syllable 

a tônica será na primeira sílaba

if the word is a verb, the stress is on the second syllable. 

se a palavra for um verbo, a tônica será na segunda sílaba.

insult – insult I didn't know if it was a  

insulto – insulto eu não sabia se era um

compliment or if it was an insult. I didn't know if it was a  

elogio ou se era um insulto. Não sabia se era um

compliment or if it was an insult. Insult is a noun, and stress is on  

elogio ou um insulto. Insulto é um substantivo e a ênfase está

the first syllable - Insult This person insulted me. 

na   primeira sílaba - Insulto Esta pessoa me insultou.

Insult is a verb, and stress is  on the second syllable - insulted 

Insultar é um verbo e o acento está na segunda sílaba - insultado

present – present On the train home, she gave me a present 

presente - presente No trem para casa, ela me deu um presente

A prEsent is a noun, the  stress is on the first syllable 

Um presente é um substantivo, o acento está na primeira sílaba

To present is a verb, so the  second syllable is stressed.

record -record NOW LET’S REPEAT ALL THESE WORDS TOGETHER

insult – insult present – present 

insulto – insulto presente – presente

import – import increase – increase 

importar – importar aumentar – aumentar

record -record This rule is extremely important,

because so many students  find these words confusing. 

porque muitos alunos encontram essas palavras confuso.

Because they have the same spelling but they are pronounced differently.

Rule 5 Words that end

-tion and -sion the stress is on the syllable that

goes before the last syllable. information

communication You can see that the stress is on the vowel sound
