about the most common modal verbs in English  and you will learn how to use them correctly.

You probably have learned English tenses - Past,

Present and Future. But modal  verbs are a little bit different.

These are the most common modal verbs.  May, might, must, can, will, could,

should, would. These modal verbs are  often used in English conversations.

But there are two modal verbs that are  used very rarely - Ought to and shall.

Now I'm talking about American English. In  American English they rarely use these two

Now let’s talk about the important rules we  need to know to use modal verbs accurately.

Rule number 1. Modal verbs don't change For example, we say I play. He plays.  

Regla número 1. Los verbos modales no cambian. Por ejemplo, decimos yo juego. Juega.

We add an –s for He, she, it. But we do not change the modal verb. 

Agregamos una –s para Él, ella, eso. Pero no cambiamos el verbo modal.

For example. I can play the  guitar. He can play the guitar. 

Por ejemplo. Puedo tocar la guitarra. Él puede tocar la guitarra.

Do not say He cans Or she cans. The modal verb always stays the same. 

No digas Él puede o ella puede. El verbo modal siempre permanece igual.

She should do the task. We should do the task. Do not say shoulds. Do not change the modal verb.

Ella debería hacer la tarea. Deberíamos hacer la tarea. No digas deberías. No cambies el verbo modal.

Rule number two. Use the  base verb after a modal verb. 

Regla número dos. Usa el verbo base después de un verbo modal.

We use the base verb after the modal verb. The base verb is the infinitive form without "to." 

Usamos el verbo base después del verbo modal. El verbo base es la forma infinitiva sin "to".

She might go to the party with us. We  do not say she might to go to the party. 

Quizás vaya a la fiesta con nosotros. No decimos que podría ir a la fiesta.

Or she might going to the party  with us. It is wrong to say this. 

O podría ir a la fiesta con nosotros. Está mal decir esto.

So the verb after the modal verb stays  the same. Do not add to, do not add -ing 

Entonces el verbo después del verbo modal permanece igual. No agregues, no agregues -ing

Take a look at this sentence.  I must finish the project. 

Echa un vistazo a esta oración. Debo terminar el proyecto.

I often hear my students say - I must to finish But we don't need to use TO after the modal verb 

A menudo escucho a mis alumnos decir: Debo terminar. Pero no necesitamos usar TO después del verbo modal.

I must finish the project. I  must do it. Not I must to do it.

Debo terminar el proyecto. Debo hacerlo. No debo hacerlo.

3. In negatives, we use NOT after the modal verb We never use don’t, doesn't, isn't, aren't,

wasn't, won't with these modal verbs. I could not understand the rule. 

was not, will not con estos verbos modales. No pude entender la regla.

It would be wrong if I say I  didn’t could understand the rule. 

Sería un error si dijera que no pude entender la regla.

We must not forget about the meeting. It would be wrong if I say We don’t  

No debemos olvidarnos de la reunión. Sería un error si dijera No

must forget about the meeting. These mistakes are very common.

You cannot, you may not, you could  not, you must not, you will not,  

puedes, no puedes, no podrías , no debes, no lo harás,

you would not. Or we can use contractions. "You cannot" becomes "You can't." 

no lo harías. O podemos usar contracciones. "No puedes" se convierte en "No puedes".

"You could not" becomes "You couldn't." "You must not" becomes "You mustn't." 

"No pudiste" se convierte en "No pudiste". "No debes" se convierte en "No debes".

"You will not" becomes "You won't." "You would not" becomes "You wouldn't." 

"No lo harás" se convierte en "No lo harás". "No lo harías" se convierte en "No lo harías".

Please pay attention to the structure ‘cannot’.  We say cannot, but it’s actually one word  

Preste atención a la estructura "no se puede". Decimos que no puedo, pero en realidad es una palabra:

I cannot. I cannot do that. When we spell  this word, this is a really common mistake.

no puedo. No puedo hacer eso. Cuando deletreamos esta palabra, es un error muy común.

Rule 4. The modal verb always  comes first in questions.

Regla 4. El verbo modal siempre aparece primero en las preguntas. ¿

Could I help you with your essay? In questions a modal verb comes  

Puedo ayudarte con tu ensayo? En las preguntas, el verbo modal va

before the subject. In this sentence we have  the subject I, and two verbs could and help. 

delante del sujeto. En esta oración tenemos el sujeto I y dos verbos podrían y ayudar. ¿

Do I could help is not correct. Am I could help is also not correct. 

Puedo ayudar? No es correcto. ¿ Puedo ayudar? Tampoco es correcto.

So, in questions, the modal  verb always comes first. 

Entonces, en las preguntas, el verbo modal siempre viene primero.

And we do not use auxiliary verbs like  – do, did, does, am, are and so on.

Y no utilizamos verbos auxiliares como : do, did, Does, am, are, etc.

Can, Could and May Now let’s talk about these

3 modal verbs that we usually use when we ask  questions, when we ask someone to do something. 

3 verbos modales que solemos usar cuando hacemos preguntas, cuando le pedimos a alguien que haga algo.

Can, Could and May. But how  do we know which one to use? 

Can, Podría y Mayo. Pero ¿cómo sabemos cuál usar?

First, when we ask a question, we ask  for permission or we request someone to  

Primero, cuando hacemos una pregunta, pedimos permiso o solicitamos a alguien que

do something for us. We start the  question with Can, Could or May. 

haga algo por nosotros. Comenzamos la pregunta con Can, Could o May.

We use CAN in more informal situations. I  mean when you're with your family or friends. 

Usamos CAN en situaciones más informales. Me refiero a cuando estás con tu familia o amigos.

We use COULD in a little bit more formal  situations when we make a polite request.  

Usamos PODRÍA en situaciones un poco más formales cuando hacemos una solicitud cortés.

For example, with your colleagues at work or  when you’re in a store talking to a salesperson. 

Por ejemplo, con tus compañeros de trabajo o cuando estás en una tienda hablando con un vendedor.

MAY is used in formal situations,  when you’re talking to a customer,  

MAY se utiliza en situaciones formales, cuando se habla con un cliente, un

client, or giving an interview. And you’re  trying to be very formal and very polite. 

cliente o se da una entrevista. Y estás intentando ser muy formal y muy educado.

There is one important grammar rule. When forming questions with 'Can'  

Hay una regla gramatical importante. Al formular preguntas con "Can"

and 'Could,' any subject pronoun can  be used. We can say, Can I, can you,  

y "Could", se puede utilizar cualquier pronombre sujeto . Podemos decir: ¿Puedo, tú,

can we, can she, can he, could  they, could she, could he, okay?

podemos, ella, él, ellos, ella, él, ¿vale?

When we use May, we can just use  it with I or we. May I or may we? 

Cuando usamos May, podemos usarlo con I o We. ¿Puedo o podemos?

We can't ask permission for someone else. May I borrow your pen? May we sit here? 

No podemos pedir permiso para otra persona. ¿ Me puede prestar su bolígrafo? ¿Podemos sentarnos aquí?

Now let’s compare three different  words in the same question. 

Ahora comparemos tres palabras diferentes en la misma pregunta. ¿

Can I have some tea? Could I have  some tea? and May I have some tea? 

Puedo tomar un poco de té? ¿Puedo tomar un poco de té? y ¿Puedo tomar un poco de té?

If I'm at home, I can ask one of my family  members, "Can I have some tea?" This situation  

Si estoy en casa, puedo preguntarle a uno de mis familiares: "¿Puedo tomar un té?". Esta situación

is really informal so we use CAN. Let's say I am in a coffee shop,  

es realmente informal, por eso usamos CAN. Digamos que estoy en una cafetería,

it's a little bit more formal situation  and I could ask "Could I have some tea"? 

es una situación un poco más formal y podría preguntar: "¿Puedo tomar un té?".

And let’s imagine that I am in a  fancy restaurant ordering some tea,

and I would say "May I have some tea?" 

y digo "¿Puedo tomar un té?".

Also you could add the word please. You may  also hear, "Can I have some tea, please?"

I often hear my students say: it's  not correct to say ‘Can I have’,

or it's rude to say “Can I have". It's not.  It’s not rude, it's just less formal. People

say that. That's totally normal. The phrase "Can  I have" is commonly used in everyday speech and

it's simply less formal. It’s a direct and  straightforward way to ask for something.

Every time you go to the store you will  hear May I help you? And you can also  

Cada vez que vayas a la tienda escucharás ¿Puedo ayudarte? Y también puedes

hear - How can I help you? Both phrases  are commonly used in customer service. 

escuchar - ¿Cómo puedo ayudarte? Ambas frases se utilizan habitualmente en atención al cliente.

Can is not always about a skill or physical  ability to do something, for example Can you  

Can no siempre se refiere a una habilidad o capacidad física para hacer algo, por ejemplo ¿Sabes

swim? I can swim. We’re talking about the ability. But it is also about asking for permission and  

nadar? Puedo nadar. Estamos hablando de la capacidad. Pero es también sobre pedir permiso y

giving permission – For example. Can  I go home now? You can go home now.

dar permiso. Por ejemplo, ¿puedo irme a casa ahora? Tú puedes irte a casa ahora. ¿

Will or Shall? Now let’s talk about the  

Will o Shall? Ahora hablemos de la

difference between Shall and Will. Shall is going  to sound more formal and more polite than ‘will’ 

diferencia entre Shall y Will. Shall va a sonar más formal y más educado que 'will'

"I shall call them now." Sounds more  formal than I will call them now. 

"Los llamaré ahora". Suena más formal de lo que los llamaré ahora.

Like I said before, native speakers do  not use Shall so much in American English.  

Como dije antes, los hablantes nativos no usan Shall tanto en inglés americano.

It’s not incorrect, but it may sound  very formal and very polite sometimes. 

No es incorrecto, pero a veces puede parecer muy formal y muy educado.

In polite questions Shall is used when  we ask something or offer something. 

En preguntas educadas Shall se usa cuando preguntamos algo u ofrecemos algo. ¿

Shall we? 

Debemos? ¿

Shall we dance? Or Shall I do the dishes? In this  case I’m making a polite offer to do the dishes.  

Bailamos? ¿O lavo los platos? En este caso, estoy haciendo una oferta cortés para lavar los platos.

I’m offering to do the dishes. But it sounds  very formal. We can just say: Should I do the  

Me ofrezco a lavar los platos. Pero suena muy formal. Simplemente podemos decir: ¿Debería lavar los

dishes? It’s a more natural way to say this. We use will when we talk about decisions we  

platos? Es una forma más natural de decir esto. Usamos will cuando hablamos de decisiones que

make in the moment. For example. I will  call them now. I will go to the party. 

tomamos en el momento. Por ejemplo. Los llamaré ahora. Yo iré a la fiesta.

When we ask a question about the future  or make a request, we often use 'will'. 

Cuando hacemos una pregunta sobre el futuro o hacemos una solicitud, a menudo utilizamos "will". ¿

Will you help me with my homework? Will you go to the party?
