You probably have learned English tenses - Past,

Present and Future. But modal  verbs are a little bit different.

These are the most common modal verbs.  May, might, must, can, will, could,

should, would. These modal verbs are  often used in English conversations.

But there are two modal verbs that are  used very rarely - Ought to and shall.

Now I'm talking about American English. In  American English they rarely use these two

Now let’s talk about the important rules we  need to know to use modal verbs accurately. 

이제 조동사를 정확하게 사용하기 위해 알아야 할 중요한 규칙에 대해 이야기해 보겠습니다.

Rule number 1. Modal verbs don't change For example, we say I play. He plays.  

규칙 번호 1. 조동사는 변하지 않습니다. 예를 들어 I play라고 합니다. 그는 연주합니다.

We add an –s for He, she, it. But we do not change the modal verb. 

He, she, it에 -s를 추가합니다. 그러나 우리는 조동사를 바꾸지 않습니다.

For example. I can play the  guitar. He can play the guitar. 

예를 들어. 나는 기타를 칠 줄 알아 . 그는 기타를 칠 수 있어요.

Do not say He cans Or she cans. The modal verb always stays the same. 

그가 할 수 있다거나 그녀가 할 수 있다고 말하지 마십시오. 조동사는 항상 동일하게 유지됩니다.

She should do the task. We should do the task. Do not say shoulds. Do not change the modal verb.

그녀는 그 일을 해야 합니다. 우리는 그 일을 해야 합니다. 해야 한다고 말하지 마십시오. 조동사를 변경하지 마십시오.

Rule number two. Use the  base verb after a modal verb. 

두 번째 규칙. 조동사 뒤에 기본 동사를 사용하세요.

We use the base verb after the modal verb. The base verb is the infinitive form without "to." 

조동사 뒤에 기본 동사를 사용합니다. 기본 동사는 "to"가 없는 부정사 형태입니다.

She might go to the party with us. We  do not say she might to go to the party. 

그녀는 우리와 함께 파티에 갈 수도 있습니다. 우리는 그녀가 파티에 갈 것이라고 말하지 않습니다.

Or she might going to the party  with us. It is wrong to say this. 

아니면 우리와 함께 파티에 갈 수도 있습니다 . 이렇게 말하는 것은 잘못된 것입니다.

So the verb after the modal verb stays  the same. Do not add to, do not add -ing 

따라서 조동사 뒤의 동사는 동일하게 유지됩니다 . Do not add to, do not add -ing

Take a look at this sentence.  I must finish the project. 

이 문장을 보세요. 나는 프로젝트를 끝내야 해요.

I often hear my students say - I must to finish But we don't need to use TO after the modal verb 

학생들이 'I must to done'이라고 말하는 것을 자주 듣습니다. 하지만 조동사 뒤에 TO를 사용할 필요는 없습니다.

I must finish the project. I  must do it. Not I must to do it.

I must done the project. 꼭 해야 해요. 아니 꼭 해야 합니다.

3. In negatives, we use NOT after the modal verb We never use don’t, doesn't, isn't, aren't,  

3. 부정문에서는 조동사 뒤에 NOT을 사용합니다. 이러한 조동사와 함께 don't, does't, is't, aren',

wasn't, won't with these modal verbs. I could not understand the rule. 

wasn't, will't를 절대 사용하지 않습니다. 나는 그 규칙을 이해할 수 없었다.

It would be wrong if I say I  didn’t could understand the rule. 

규칙을 이해하지 못했다고 말하면 잘못된 것입니다.

We must not forget about the meeting. It would be wrong if I say We don’t  

우리는 회의를 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 회의를 잊지 말아야 한다고 말하면 잘못된 것입니다

must forget about the meeting. These mistakes are very common. 

. 이러한 실수는 매우 흔합니다.

You cannot, you may not, you could  not, you must not, you will not,  

당신은 할 수 없습니다, 당신은 할 수 없습니다, 당신은 할 수 없습니다, 당신은 하지 않을 것입니다,

you would not. Or we can use contractions. "You cannot" becomes "You can't." 

당신은 하지 않을 것입니다. 아니면 수축을 사용할 수도 있습니다. "당신은 할 수 없습니다"는 "당신은 할 수 없습니다"가 됩니다.

"You could not" becomes "You couldn't." "You must not" becomes "You mustn't."

"You will not" becomes "You won't." "You would not" becomes "You wouldn't."

Please pay attention to the structure ‘cannot’.  We say cannot, but it’s actually one word  

'할 수 없다'는 구조에 주목해주세요. 우리는 할 수 없다고 말하지만 실제로는 한 단어입니다.

I cannot. I cannot do that. When we spell  this word, this is a really common mistake.

할 수 없습니다. 그렇게 할수 없어. 이 단어를 철자할 때 이는 매우 흔한 실수입니다.

Rule 4. The modal verb always  comes first in questions.

규칙 4. 의문문에는 항상 조동사가 먼저 옵니다.

Could I help you with your essay? In questions a modal verb comes  

당신의 에세이를 도와드릴까요? 질문에서는 조동사가 주어

before the subject. In this sentence we have  the subject I, and two verbs could and help. 

앞에 옵니다. 이 문장에는 주어 I와 두 개의 동사 could와 help가 있습니다.

Do I could help is not correct. Am I could help is also not correct. 

내가 도와드릴까요?라는 표현은 정확하지 않습니다. 내가 도와드릴까요? 또한 정확하지 않습니다.

So, in questions, the modal  verb always comes first. 

따라서 질문에서는 조동사가 항상 먼저 옵니다.

And we do not use auxiliary verbs like  – do, did, does, am, are and so on.

그리고 – do, did, does, am, are 등과 같은 보조 동사를 사용하지 않습니다.

Can, Could and May Now let’s talk about these

3 modal verbs that we usually use when we ask  questions, when we ask someone to do something. 

우리가 질문을 할 때, 누군가에게 무엇을 하라고 요청할 때 일반적으로 사용하는 3가지 조동사에 대해 이야기해 보겠습니다.

Can, Could and May. But how  do we know which one to use? 

캔, 캔, 메이. 하지만 어떤 것을 사용해야 할지 어떻게 알 수 있나요?

First, when we ask a question, we ask  for permission or we request someone to  

먼저, 질문을 할 때 우리는 허락을 구하거나 누군가에게

do something for us. We start the  question with Can, Could or May. 

우리를 위해 뭔가를 해달라고 요청합니다. Can, Could 또는 May로 질문을 시작합니다.

We use CAN in more informal situations. I  mean when you're with your family or friends. 

우리는 좀 더 비공식적인 상황에서 CAN을 사용합니다. 가족이나 친구와 함께 있을 때를 의미합니다.

We use COULD in a little bit more formal  situations when we make a polite request.  

좀 더 격식을 갖춘 상황에서는 정중한 요청을 할 때 COULD를 사용합니다.

For example, with your colleagues at work or  when you’re in a store talking to a salesperson. 

예를 들어 직장 동료와 함께 또는 매장에서 영업사원과 대화할 때입니다.

MAY is used in formal situations,  when you’re talking to a customer,  

MAY는 고객과

client, or giving an interview. And you’re  trying to be very formal and very polite. 

대화하거나 인터뷰를 할 때 등 공식적인 상황에서 사용됩니다. 그리고 당신은 매우 격식을 차리고 예의바르게 행동하려고 노력하고 있습니다.

There is one important grammar rule. When forming questions with 'Can'  

중요한 문법 규칙이 하나 있습니다. 'Can'  및 'Could'로 질문을 만들 때는

and 'Could,' any subject pronoun can  be used. We can say, Can I, can you,  

모든 주제 대명사를 사용할 수 있습니다. 우리는 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. 나는, 당신은 할 수 있습니까,

can we, can she, can he, could  they, could she, could he, okay?

우리는, 그녀는, 그는, 그들은, 그녀는, 그는, 알겠습니까?

When we use May, we can just use  it with I or we. May I or may we? 

May를 사용할 때는 나 또는 우리와 함께 사용할 수 있습니다. 내가 해도 될까요, 아니면 우리가 해도 될까요?

We can't ask permission for someone else. May I borrow your pen? May we sit here? 

우리는 다른 사람에게 허락을 요청할 수 없습니다. 펜을 빌려도 될까요? 여기 앉아도 될까요?

Now let’s compare three different  words in the same question. 

이제 같은 질문에 있는 세 가지 다른 단어를 비교해 보겠습니다.

Can I have some tea? Could I have  some tea? and May I have some tea? 

차 좀 마셔도 될까요? 차 좀 마실 수 있을까요? 그리고 차 좀 마셔도 될까요?

If I'm at home, I can ask one of my family  members, "Can I have some tea?" This situation  

집에 있으면 가족 중 한 명에게 "차 한잔 해도 될까요?"라고 물어볼 수 있습니다. 이 상황은

is really informal so we use CAN. Let's say I am in a coffee shop,  

매우 비공식적이므로 CAN을 사용합니다. 제가 커피숍에 있다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

it's a little bit more formal situation  and I could ask "Could I have some tea"? 

좀 더 공식적인 상황이므로 "차 좀 드실래요?"라고 물을 수 있습니다.

And let’s imagine that I am in a  fancy restaurant ordering some tea,  

그리고 내가 멋진 레스토랑에서 차를 주문하고 있는데

and I would say "May I have some tea?" 

"차 좀 드시겠어요?"라고 말한다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

Also you could add the word please. You may  also hear, "Can I have some tea, please?"

I often hear my students say: it's  not correct to say ‘Can I have’,

or it's rude to say “Can I have". It's not.  It’s not rude, it's just less formal. People

say that. That's totally normal. The phrase "Can  I have" is commonly used in everyday speech and

it's simply less formal. It’s a direct and  straightforward way to ask for something.

Every time you go to the store you will  hear May I help you? And you can also  

매장에 갈 때마다 May I help you?라는 말을 듣게 되며 다음과 같은 말을 들을 수도 있습니다.

hear - How can I help you? Both phrases  are commonly used in customer service. 

어떻게 도와드릴까요? 두 표현 모두 고객 서비스에서 일반적으로 사용됩니다.

Can is not always about a skill or physical  ability to do something, for example Can you  

Can은 항상 무언가를 할 수 있는 기술이나 신체적 능력을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다. 예를 들어 Can you

swim? I can swim. We’re talking about the ability. But it is also about asking for permission and  

swim? I can swim. 우리는 능력에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다. 하지만 그것은 허락을 구하는 것과

giving permission – For example. Can  I go home now? You can go home now.

허가를 주는 것에 대해서도요 – 예를 들어, 지금 집에 갈 수 있나요? 지금 집에 가도 됩니다.

Will or Shall? Now let’s talk about the  

Will 아니면 Shall? 이제

difference between Shall and Will. Shall is going  to sound more formal and more polite than ‘will’ 

Shall과 Will의 차이점에 대해 이야기해 보겠습니다. Shall은 다음 보다 더 형식적이고 정중하게 들릴 것입니다. 'will'

"I shall call them now." Sounds more  formal than I will call them now. 

"I will call them now." I will call them now.보다 더 격식 있게 들립니다.

Like I said before, native speakers do  not use Shall so much in American English.  

앞서 말씀드린 것처럼 원어민들은 미국 영어에서 Shall을 그다지 많이 사용하지 않습니다.

It’s not incorrect, but it may sound  very formal and very polite sometimes. 

틀린 말은 아니지만 때로는 매우 격식을 차리고 매우 정중하게 들릴 수도 있습니다.

In polite questions Shall is used when  we ask something or offer something. 

정중한 질문에서는 무언가를 묻거나 제안할 때 Shall을 사용합니다 .

Shall we? 

우리 할까요?

Shall we dance? Or Shall I do the dishes? In this  case I’m making a polite offer to do the dishes.  

우리는 댄스? 아니면 제가 설거지를 할까요? 이번 경우에는 제가 설거지를 하겠다고 정중하게 제안하는 것입니다.

I’m offering to do the dishes. But it sounds  very formal. We can just say: Should I do the  

나는 설거지를 제안하고 있습니다. 하지만 매우 격식을 차린 것 같네요. 그냥 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. 내가 설거지를 해야 할까요

dishes? It’s a more natural way to say this. We use will when we talk about decisions we  

? 이렇게 말하는 것이 더 자연스러운 방법입니다. 우리는 순간적으로 내리는 결정에 대해 말할 때 will을 사용합니다

make in the moment. For example. I will  call them now. I will go to the party. 

. 예를 들어. 지금 전화하겠습니다. 나는 파티에 갈 것이다.

When we ask a question about the future  or make a request, we often use 'will'. 

미래에 대해 질문하거나 부탁을 할 때 'will'을 자주 사용합니다.

Will you help me with my homework? Will you go to the party?

내 숙제 좀 도와줄래? 파티에 갈래?
