Today we’ll be talking about  improving an American accent 

without leaving your country. I’ll give you some tips to  

help you practice your accent at home and you don’t need to go to the US to study. 

So what kind of an accent am I gonna teach you? A lot of people in the United States  

have different accents – a Southern accent, a New Your accent,  

a California accent, etc But today we gonna focus  

on the most standard general American accent 

that you can hear in movies, TV shows,  news reports and stuff like that

Of course if you want to sound like an American, you should not only have the right pronunciation, 

but also use American vocabulary  instead of British vocabulary and 

if you are interested in difference between  British and American expressions and phrases,

Ok my first tip to improve  your American accent and sound  

exactly like a native is 1. Use Common Reductions 

Native speakers actually reduce everything and – n 

Instead of saying - day and night You can say day n night 

for becomes fr Instead of saying - thanks for your help

for – fer thanks fr your help 

or becomes r or = r 

coffee or tea coffee r tea 

Instead of saying coffee or tea, say coffee r tea Also common reductions native speakers use  

all the time lemme wanna gimme gonna 

Let me tell you something I wanna do it right now 

Give me some water, please I’m gonna eat a sandwich

Also a useful tip that I use to sound like a native speaker is

2. Exaggerating the sound R Some people have problems making the R sound, 

so they make a W sound instead. If you wanna speak English correctly 

and improve your accent,  please don’t make that mistake. 

{ r } This sound is like a grawling dog rrr 

That sound is very strong when it goes before the consonant

And it’s also pronounced  at the end of the word like 

far car

brother It’s common in  

American English to colour the sound R Don’t be afraid to exaggerate it -rrr

the next tip that will help  you sound like an American is 

3. Change your T sound into D sound Let’s listen to native speakers 

how they pronounce the phrase exciting opportunity It’s NOT exciTing OpporTuniTy,  

it’s sounds like a British version The sound T changes into D sound 

when they are between two vowels exciting 

opportunity ability 

city letter 

water settle 

bottle Now try these words with me 

exciting opportunity 

ability city 

letter water 

settle bottle 

Well done! The sound T becomes D 

and it may happen between words  in the sentence, for example: 

I’m not always perfect. We don’t say I’m not always perfect 

We say: Im noD always perfect Do you feel the difference? 

Change your Ts into Ds and it’s  gonna make you sound more American

Another trick that you can use is 4. Practice Glottal T 

When T goes at the end or  at the middle of the word 

You don’t really pronounce the sound T but it looks like the air stops  

somewhere in the throat and it comes out of your mouth 

… let me give you an example: 

written we don’t say 

written we actually say written 

tn You can feel the air stops right here 

Glottal T is an interesting  thing that native speakers do 

but if you say written this is NOT incorrect you’re not gonna have anyone misunderstand you 

if you pronounce the sound T. But if you really wanna sound  

like an American, practice this tip The same thing with the words: 

cotton important 

eaten kitten 

certain Now let’s practice together 

written cotton 

important eaten 

kitten certain 

To make sure that you’re doing it right try to play around with the phrase A-oh 

What we say when we mess up something A-oh The sound A …is a glottal stop 

and you can feel it inside your throat A-oh 

And you can practice it adding the sound  

N A-n 

A-n button 

button If you master glottal T, 

you will definitely speak like a native American The next tip is crucial if you wanna  

sound natural in English 5. Open your mouth wide 

as wide as you can This tip is kind of hilarious, 

but if you watch American and Canadian speakers 

you’ll see they open their mouth this is just the way they speak 

and there’re some sounds and diphthongs that should be pronounced with  

opening your mouth wide like эe, ai, ei, au 

In Russia people speak like this { Hey, my name is Kate, I’m gonna  

teach you American accent please like my video  

and subscribe to the channel } But if you wanna make English sounds 

American English sounds, you  should articulate them with  

open mouth OPEN not open

6. The next tip to improve your American accent is DROP the T 

When you have N and T in a word, the T disappears wanted wannid 

interview international 

winter For example instead of saying wanted we say wannid 

interview international 

winter twenty

And the last but not the least  tip for improving your accent is

7. Practice tongue twisters 

I don’t even know how much I’ve  been practicing tongue twisters 

But it was the most powerful thing  that helped me to build my muscles 

and to make my accent better and clearer Let me show you my favorite tongue twisters

This is not that easy there are some difficult sounds

This is how I got my American accent But to honest, I’m never satisfied with my accent 

I’m working on it every single day Of course, an accent makes us unique 

We all have accents and that’s totally normal but 

I don’t really like my Russian  accent and I hear it when I speak 

If you wanna work on your  accent to sound like a native 

the best practice as I said before – shadowing. When I watch an American TV show or a movie 

I just pause it and try to repeat  the sentences in the same way, 

with the same intonation, and it’s an extremely helpful
