This Upgraded English Vocabulary Makes You Sound More Native

all right I think we should be live I am Drew  Badger the founder of englishanyone.com and the  

English fluency guide welcome to another live  video here on YouTube today we are going to  

talk about upgrading vocabulary so you sound  a bit more natural and Native now what we're  

going to talk about uh really I'll take some very  basic things and it's perfectly fine to use this  

basic vocabulary don't let anyone tell you that  like you can't use certain words this is more for  

people who want to upgrade their vocabulary uh  and another thing I want to show is that as kind  

of an example of naturally varied review native  speakers will learn all of these different ways  

of expressing themselves and even if you don't  feel so confident about using them you will be  

uh more able to understand them when you do hear  them George nice to see you there uh we'll give a  

moment for people to come in but hopefully  it looks like everything is working over

here and we should be ready yeah nice to see  

everybody here all right let  me erase this and we'll get

started wow this is

some stuff really sticks  on here try my other eraser

wow all right well that took a little bit  nice to see you guys uh I'll check chat in  

just a moment but let's get started uh so each  one of these things I wanted to keep this very  

simple uh and so each one of these phrases  that will be taking from just regular uh  

English conversations again you can use them  there's nothing wrong with using these but I  

just want to give you something additionally  that will help you sound a bit more natural  

and Native all right so each one of these  will follow the same simple format I'm just  

going to change one word in each of these uh  phrases and it's really just to do so to do

something to do something make that a bit  more clear something so to do something and  

then we have our word over here so we'll start  with to do something badly so to do something

badly uh you can also Express this as doing  something poorly both of those are fine and  

again these are perfectly fine words you  can use so I did something badly and this  

could be anything so I sung a song badly or  I played a game badly or I performed badly  

or something else and this is typically  when you're uh maybe you're trying to do  

something correctly like you have an example  of something so you're trying to play a song  

on the guitar that people know uh or you're  trying to draw a picture or something like  

that uh but the more conversational uh natural  way of saying this that you will hear is just

butcher so this is our first example we're  going to cover 10 of these things in this  

video hopefully I don't get sidetracked too much  this is another good word for you to get side

tracked there you go another bonus expression  for you another bonus word to get sidetracked  

it's like you're on one track over here you're  supposed to be going this way but oh no I get  

sidetracked and end up going on this track over  here talking about something different to get  

Sid tracked sidetracked all right so if I do  something badly I would say I butcher buted  

that thing and now this is the same kind of  butcher like you take an animal and cut it up  

into pieces that's to butcher something but  we can talk about butchering something like  

you do it badly so I could sing a song badly I  butchered that song all right as an example so I  

butchered uh I don't know like a presentation I  was trying to make so I have to do something uh  

but I messed up a lot I did lots of or I made  many mistakes in that thing I butchered it so  

I butchered that thing okay so instead of doing  something badly or doing something poorly which  

you can say we butchered something I'm going to  keep flowing through these things if you have  

any questions as I go through them they should  be pretty simple to understand but let me know  

all right but pretty easy so far to butcher  something and this is a uh what you'll often  

find in in conversational English is Butcher is  it's just a regular word it's an occupation word  

so the name for somebody's job so I am a butcher  if I you know cut pieces of meat for people but  

we take something like this and this is how  we create slang we give something a different  

meaning or we extend the meaning to something  else so we're not just talking about cutting  

up pieces of meat maybe we're talking about doing  something in a bad way so I take a song and I cut  

it into different pieces because I sing it badly  well K to there hi from Japan you nice to see you  

there all right I'll go back and check chat uh  but is it formal uh yeah you can well it's not  

this it's not like informal or formal you can  use this in a business context so I could be at  

a business meeting and say I I really butchered  some uh I butchered a sales pitch all right or  

I butchered a presentation uh or I butchered  my uh my interview okay so anything where we  

where we do something badly okay so if you're  unsure ever about it you can just you know just  

describe it normally in regular everyday English  there's nothing bad about this and I'm not going  

to tell you don't use this so you can use these  Expressions you can do something badly you can  

do something poorly but when you when you use  a slightly more advanced or natural or native  

expression people will notice that and they will  think oh this is a person who understands uh at a  

higher level okay so maybe I can connect with  this person better and so this is one of the  

more important things about language learning and  this is why a lot of people want to know this more  

conversational speech because it connects you with  people if I can talk with a group of people and I  

know it's it's almost like a code word that you  know it lets you into their Club so oh like you  

know how to say like you butchered something wow  that that's impressive to a native English speaker  

because they don't expect you to know that okay  so that's why I'm letting you in on this kind  

of vocabulary okay let's go on to the next one  so if we want to do something badly what might  

be the opposite of that what are we talking about  and again there are there are other ways we could  

express this but I don't want to like tell you a  whole bunch of things the point is just to give  

you at least one other way of expressing this and  even if you don't use it you will be more prepared  

and you will recognize it when you do hear those  things okay so instead of doing something badly  

number two here we'll just say well this is number  two we just say do something well to do something  

well now how might we express that I'll go back  through the chat right now if you have an idea  

of how you might Express this and there are many  ways we could do that how we might do something  

well so when we just talked about doing something  badly or doing something poorly this would be the  

opposite to do something well do something well so  let me go back uh check chat here amazingly yeah  

you could say that that's another another way to  say that to do something amazingly so amazingly  

like you could do something well or you could  do I mean amazingly is like even at a higher  

level like you did something very well you did it  amazingly you did it perfectly so those are those  

are around the same kind of meeting but you can  or the same kind of meaning uh but you can talk  

about that as well so nice to see you there cam  from Thailand Victor nice to see you there Juan  

and the toy let's see from Brazil Gabriel from  Mexico Martha from Venezuela look at Venezuela  

we got South America all over the place over here  tendo here how to distinguish the pronoun can and  

can't ah well those aren't pronouns but uh yeah if  you if you're talking about the like when people  

say I can do that or I can't do that usually you  can hear a difference if you listen carefully I've  

talked about this in videos before that's not the  subject of this video uh but usually you can tell  

from Context what people are saying so look at  their face like yeah I can do that so I'm shaking  

my head up and down means yes I can probably do  something I can do that I can do that I can do  

that or no I can't I can't I can't do that I can't  do that so you look at their facial expression and  

the tone of their voice and it becomes much easier  for you to understand words like this but uh it's  

another reason to pay attention to many Native  examples this is why naturally varied review is  

so important because you really need to get lots  of good native examp examples to see how natives  

are saying this if you hear a hundred different  natives say I can and I can't you will become  

much more confident about understanding those  things all right let's see what else we have  

here Bridget nice to see you there my favorite  teacher well it's my pleasure Victor and I see  

there in the house let's see I say that but is  okay answer that one I'm from Korea I know grammar  

but it's hard when I talk to foreigners uh you  can tell me more about that we can talk a little  

bit after I go through our 10 uh Expressions  here if you have spefic specific questions  

but typically uh people know a lot of English  but they have have they have trouble speaking  

they have trouble expressing themselves because  they have doubts and uncertainty about nouns or  

verbs or adjectives or pronunciation or grammar or  whatever that thing is so you can be at the level  

where you understand but when you when it when it  comes time for you to speak then you have to feel  

certain about what you want to say if you don't  feel certain you won't speak and this is where  

a lot of people get stuck so they think they need  a lot more speaking practice where they're trying  

to repeat things they're talking to themselves  trying to repeat phrases but the truth is that  

you need the kind of practice that helps you  feel certain about vocabulary and grammar and  

pronunciation and just like I'm doing here I'm  giving you more examples of maybe particular  

expressions or particular things that you might  say so instead of saying you do something badly  

you butcher something and so here your you're  learning ah okay like that's an interesting  

thing I already knew maybe butcher like you go  to the Butcher and get some meat but here's an  

additional use for that word and by getting both  of these it makes you feel more confident and  

certain that you understand the word and when  you feel confident and certain that's when you  

speak all right so the big myth that people think  is that you speak in order to build fluency but  

the opposite is true you actually build fluency  first by understanding the language and then you  

speak okay that was my quick explanation to that  so you haven't told me what your problem is but  

I've been doing this for over 20 years now and  this is typically what the issue is all right  

uh let's see I didn't think some people will say I  did it yeah you can say that too let's see uh Asa  

from Saudi Arabia hello Group Ontario Ontario  I didn't know there's an Ontario in California  

that's interesting maybe something like with crack  like a crack team yes a crack team that would be  

a little bit different if you're talking about  doing something well uh to hit the nail on the  

head very good Raul look at that I think you've  given some good examples before but yes excellent  

work to hit the nail on the head actually I'm  just going to give the very simple example

of to nail it boom you nailed it so I did  something well I nailed it so I was giving a  

speech I did it perfectly I performed very well I  felt very confident I nailed it or or if you will  

hear people talking about gymnastics or sports or  something like that someone is trying to perform  

something and the gymnast is running and they  flip and do all these things and they stick The  

Landing so they land and they do it perfectly  they nailed it they nailed it so a longer form  

of that like rul just said is to hit the nail  on the head so if we have a a nail right here  

we want to hit something ding hit it perfectly  sometimes when you're hammering something you  

don't hit it quite right or you bend the the  nail a little bit we want to hit it right on  

the head so that's the top of nail all right so  hit something right on the head you nailed it  

you nailed it all right so we've got to butcher  something if you do it badly and then nailing  

it to New to do something bad like you really  like stuck that thing in the wall you nailed  

it so you really nailed that presentation you  nailed that uh that speech you nailed whatever  

excellent work very good all right let's see what  else we got gorgeous oh tuasa back again Drew son  

Thanksgiving Day Ohio oh yeah it is Thanksgiving  today right isn't it it's Thanksgiving what day is  

it uh it's not well I guess it's the I think it's  the day before Thanksgiving in the US right now so  

it is Thursday morning here uh but I guess yeah  so we don't have that in Japan so I forgot it's  

Thanksgiving I should call my family you know  it's weird when you're not in the country you  

know there no you know Thanksgiving like uh little  decorations and things up on the wall like little  

kids making a little you know turkey hand print  you know thing like that at school or whatever so  

my kids don't do that so in Japan because there is  no Thanksgiving right after Halloween finishes so  

Halloween is October 31st and Japanese uh people  do celebrate Halloween or they just you know get  

candy or you will see the decorations up uh and  actually a lot of people enjoy trick-or-treating  

uh in Japan but because there's no Thanksgiving  it just goes in right to Christmas uh after  

Halloween ends so right after Halloween like  the next day at at the malls they have you know  

Christmas decorations up already so one sixth  of the year is is dedicated to Christmas out

here uh let's see if I got anybody else Neils  nice to sorry I can't join I'm on my way home  

I'll join later though all right good at yes you  can talk about being good at something if you're  

just talking in general about being able to do  something or you can do something well but I'm  

talking about doing like a physical act like some  kind of activity you do um like you really you  

performed a particular thing a particular event  uh like a speech or an interview or something  

like that you nail it so we wouldn't talk about  nailing it if you're talking in general about you  

like doing like I'm good at riding horses or I'm  good at painting pictures or something like that  

but if I'm trying to do a particular painting  or I'm riding a horse I'm at a horse race and I  

won or I jumped over something I nailed it so that  particular event that particular action that thing  

that's what I'm talking about when I hear nailed  it all right uh George again can't sound high  

pitch can deep voice well you you you will hear  that but again I I don't I don't have specific  

rules about that because you will hear different  things from different Natives and this is why it's  

so important to listen to different natives hi  to all it's me uh taana from ikut Yakutsk uh if  

I pronounce that correctly nice to see you there  Jim hello Professor uh nice to see you there cat  

Mo from Nicaragua Victor I was 17 when I came  to New York uh and I speak like 70 out of a 100  

watching your videos I'll be flu very soon yes I'm  remember to get examples not just for me but lots  

of other native examples as well if you're living  in New York you will probably find many of those  

uh Max says could you please or could you explain  the word radical well R again like one thing if  

especially if you are new to the channel that  you will learn from me is that you don't really  

want to focus on a word by itself because words  don't have meaning by themselves they always have  

meaning in context so it depends on what you're  talking about there's like free radicals or a  

radical idea or a political radical there are  different meanings of it so I would just Begin  

by Googling the word radical and looking for the  different meanings of it uh and that will help you  

understand what that means all right yes tomorrow  in the US for Thanksgiving wow the explanation of  

the meaning made me understand well glad to hear  it yes and so that was also a good question like  

my my job is to get you closer and closer to  the bullseye of understanding something because  

when you understand something well then you feel  confident using it okay so if I just if I teach  

you something like yeah I nailed it so this this  this expression even up here to do something well  

it could mean so a potential one meaning is you  in general perform something well like I am good  

at singing or I am good at playing basketball or  something like that but for this example to nail  

something we're actually talking about a specific  activity so like one time one thing where you did  

something well so again like if if you're just  here to do something well you might have like you  

know you're pretty certain you're pretty certain  maybe like 80% certain you know what I'm talking  

about but as we talk more as I give you more  information we're going to move you closer and  

closer to the bullseye right here in the Middle  where you've got 100% certainty ah I know exactly  

what he's talking about and I know exactly when  I can say something okay that's the goal so we've  

got two things uh so far to do something well and  to do something badly let's see what's next on our

list and see if you guys can think of  something before I put it up here to do

something quickly to do something quickly what are  some different ways you can think of to say this  

to do something quickly to do something quickly  and again I'm not talking about in general like  

I always do I always swim quickly or I always run  quickly or something like that I'm talking about  

a specific activity like right now I'm writing  whoa like right now I'm looking at some books or  

reading some papers or something like that and  I'm doing them quickly I'm doing that activity  

quickly uh Aran says on the double on the double  is like a little bit it's a little bit faster yeah  

I mean I mean that the basic idea this is from the  Army where double times so if I'm running one two  

one two now I want to do that on the double I want  to speed it up go two times faster like 1 2 1 two  

one two one two one two so on the double right off  the bat George uh means like from the beginning so  

I want to begin this lesson so right off the bat  we're going to start with some excellent words and  

phrases that you can use right from the beginning  rapidly yes that's another basic way I mean we're  

basically replacing quickly with rapidly I'm  trying to think of another kind of an interesting  

way to say this that a native might say uh I'll  just give you one example over here there are

more I know people enjoy phrasal verbs so we will  give you to zip through something to zip through  

zip through so when we think about zipping like  if you've ever uh been on one of those I'll draw  

a not so good picture of it usually you have a  person kind of hanging uh from some some kind  

of it's like a rope or a chain or some little  bar like that so they're hanging like this this  

is called a zip a zip line or you could be uh  sitting down in a chair or something like that  

so we want to move through something quickly this  is a line that you zip through or you zip across  

so I'm zipping through these books I'm zipping  through these vocabulary examples in this video  

I'm zipping through that thing I think what did I  see somebody else had an example about something  

Snappy was it yeah ran back again uh to make  something Snappy or to do something that way yes  

we want to be quick about it make it snappy all  right so may maybe you're in the Army those are  

kind of army examples so if we say like I need  something immediately like please do something  

quickly please make it snappy all right so on  the double make it snappy those are examples of  

things maybe you would tell someone else to do  something quickly for you you can also do that  

for yourself uh but often like when you when  you use the Expression make it snappy you're  

telling someone else to do something quickly  make it snappy hurry up hurry up okay but very  

simple so if I'm doing something quickly right now  I'm trying to teach as much as I can ah yeah you  

could you could use that with your friends but uh  you have to use it in a casual way because you're  

basically commanding someone you're telling them  to do something faster say hey hurry up so people  

will say this like a boss might say that to some  employees a friend could say that to some other  

friends like hey I'm hungry like you know bring  the food back quickly make it snappy you know all  

right so that's just one more example to zip  through something and again as you're hearing  

these other examples y okay yeah is again like  if you got it now very good if you still have  

any questions let me know but just be careful uh  this is why we begin with the situation rather  

than just the vocabulary so if you just hear  make it snappy like I might I might tell my  

boss yeah like uh could you please send me that  that form like make it snappy I'm I'm kind of  

being rude to my boss because this is something  that usually like a person of a higher you know  

social rank would say to someone of a lower rank  in a in a way but again if you are speaking with  

friends you can use this in a casual way in  kind of a joking way way just make that clear  

yeah yeah you want to be careful uh that you're  that you're doing something with your boss or

whatever but you can uh talk about yourself  so if your boss asks you to do something and  

you're like okay I'll make it snappy like  I will make it snappy I will get it done  

quickly that's perfectly fine to say all  right now if we've got something quickly  

we're going to do something quickly the  opposite of this oh the opposite of this be

like slowly to do something slowly to do something  slowly let's say I'm reading a book slowly or I'm  

teaching very slowly or I'm uh moving very  slowly any kind of particular activity I'm  

doing something right now doing it very slowly  see if anybody has any examples for that let's  

see uh let's see we got uh Q to teacher I guess  that's question is it commonly used open a can of  

whoop ass or does it sound too uh Native is so  if I use it to Americans any chance they might  

over judge my English level uh well it depends  do you understand when to use that so you if  

you open up a can of a can of whoop ass on someone  it means like you're like you're fighting them or  

somebody is somebody is is really beating someone  else very badly uh so if you're talking about a  

boxing match for example when one boxer is really  beating the other one wow he really opened up a  

can of whoop ass on that other person or on that  other guy all right so you can use that there's  

nothing wrong with the vocabulary by itself the  question is do you know it well enough to feel  

confident using it when you should use that okay  that's the real question so there's nothing wrong  

with like the the can of Whoop Ass by itself if  you use use it in the right way with the proper  

or appropriate people okay so you probably would  not say it maybe in a business Contex unless you  

you are getting vocabulary signals so like kind of  we get signals for the kind of vocabulary you can  

use and typically in a company if the the owner of  the company or the the higher level people in the  

company are very casual with the way they speak  then other people in the company will also be  

casual and if you have the opposite so someone who  might be more formal in a company then you would  

have the opposite like more people would be uh  speaking more formally you know just in the rest  

of the company so yes uh you can use open a can of  whoop ass if you like but it just depends on who  

you use that with all right uh let's see Victor  again I always tell my co-workers when they're  

talking too much less with the lip more with  the hip yes it's a good way and again if you're  

speaking to co-workers and you have like a and  you have a a good relationship with them uh but  

if you're just yelling at them like hey less with  the lip more with the hip you know let's get to  

it let's get the work done all right so you have  to remember that vocabulary means something in  

that context so for particular people or in that  context it doesn't mean anything by itself uh but  

also the tone of your voice is important so if I'm  joking with my my kids or whatever like a similar  

kind of expression I will use with my daughters  so I taught them this when they were younger uh  

this is move your meat lose your seat I'll teach  you guys this one too move your meat lose your

seat so maybe one child or one person is sitting  down somewhere and then they go up I don't know  

they move they leave their chair and go someplace  else and then someone else sits down in their spot  

and they come back and say hey you're sitting in  my chair and like well that's not your chair move  

your meat lose your seat so like if you move you  can think of like the meat you know of your body  

if you move your meat you lose your seat move your  meat lose your seat move your meat lose your seat  

similar kind of thing what snail through that's an  interesting one I've never heard that before but  

yes I could see how you you could use that and so  this is you thinking more like a native and how we  

create vocabulary and expressions this way so oh  yeah I could like snail through something yeah I  

could yeah I could see that I I've never used that  but I could see somebody using that expression  

to snail through something let's see uh what are  we going to do we'll just give an example of pla

through so this is another common phrasal verb to  plot through something and you can think about a  

plaing movement this is walking you're taking big  slow steps I'm plotting through something so maybe  

you're reading a difficult or academic book and  it's hard to understand you need a lot of time to  

think about it I'm plaing through this thing to  plot through all right plot through we wouldn't  

really say plot yeah you could you could say like  to plot away at something I guess you could say  

that but plotting through it's you can kind of  think of yourself walking uh so if you walk on  

the walk on the ground the ground is pretty  smooth and easy to walk across but if you're  

in water or a swamp or something and you really  have to pick your legs up one at a time and move  

very slowly you're plotting through that thing  okay so just like I'm plotting through a swamp I  

might also plot through some homework examples or  something like that to plot through plot through  

all right I think everybody's getting it over here  making sure I'm not uh skipping anybody did you  

understand when to use that fundamental question  yes uh let's see hello from Morocco greetings for  

greetings to Cher J nice to see you there Unice  and Sandra is there interesting we have a similar  

saying yes so again a lot lots of languages will  have similar kinds of ideas because we don't begin  

with the words we begin with the situation and  often if there is you know some kind of like uh  

like the expression in English kill kill two birds  with one stone uh that's same thing in Japanese as  

well because you you think like wow I can throw  a rock at some birds and if I could kill two of  

them with one rock that would be better than just  killing one all right so it's the same kind of  

thing you often find and that's why it's good to  begin with situations when you're learning new  

vocabulary I've learned with the meaning work  slowly yeah so you could you could like work  

slowly you could do anything really slowly when  you're plotting through uh let's see Ma said my  

time has come to go well we will see you next time  then all right let's keep it moving we don't want  

to plot uh too slowly through these examples I  want to make sure everybody understands everything  

and remember I'm giving you a single thing just  because I don't want to make this too complicated  

but uh as you can see there are often many ways  that we can express things and so you can think  

about many different ways you will hear different  ways and you can put those into your brain even  

if you might not use them you will be prepared  when you hear other people using them so you can  

understand what natives are talking about all  right so next what we have here to do something

easily I'm going to go to excuse me go through  these a little bit faster uh make sure I don't  

get stuck and uh that way we can have more  people asking questions if they need something  

so if you can think of anything uh let's see  VJ from India nice to see you there so if you  

want to talk about doing something easily and  again I'm talking about a specific activity  

a specific event uh so you can talk about you  found something easy and that's usually a way  

uh around of describing something after you  do it so I like uh if again using just your  

excuse me using your past tense there uh so I  found something easy so after you took a test  

or after you did something maybe other people  thought it was hard but you found it easy you  

thought it was easy but I'm talking about being  able to do something easily yeah so again George  

has a good example there a piece of cake and I  think quite a few quite a few people know this  

as well so people will describe something as  like that test was a piece of cake so the test  

was very easy I'm describing something as easy  uh but here I'm talking about doing something  

easily uh no piece of cake is you can use that  anytime there I mean the you know president of  

a company can talk about something being  a piece of cake as well it's not it's  

not too informal but I'll give you yet another  interesting uh phrasal verb that you might not

know to sail through so the example of a piece of  

cake is used to describe easy  so easy so like something is

easy a piece of cake piece of cake but here we're  talking about easily to do something easily so to  

sail through something now if you think about  a ship with a sail on it and the wind is just  

blowing you you're not doing anything it's  just nice and relaxing the wind is pushing  

you through and you just sail through that  thing so you're not rowing the boat you're  

not using energy it's just nice and easy  for you you just sailed through that test  

you sailed through that interview it was just  nice and easy nice and smooth for you to sail  

through okay so be careful with things like this  when you hear a word like yes they sound similar  

but these are actually different words and the  context becomes a little bit different so that  

test was easy that test was a piece of cake or if  you're talking about doing the test like taking  

the test ah I sailed through that test yes so  Sanders says I learn English easily with you so  

yes we're kind of sailing through uh this lesson  right here trying to make it easy for people to  

understand okay so especially if somebody else  thinks something is challenging but you did it  

very easily or it didn't maybe require much  work for you you sailed through that thing  

you sailed through that thing all right now what  might be the opposite of this so to do something

easily so the opposite would  be something like uh with great

effort so instead of doing something easily the  opposite you do something with great effort so  

it takes a lot of time or a lot of trouble  to do something with great effort how might  

we describe that easy peasy lemon squeezy that's  right that's right easy peasy lemon squeezy yes  

Andrew my pleasure so to do something with great  effort do something with great effort now there  

are many ways uh you could do this I think  uh let's see R gave an example before about  

using one's hip instead of moving one one's lip uh  but this will just give one example here to give

something your all to give something your all so  this is the uh the idea of of not just let's say  

I have to move my hand like this this doesn't  require much effort I'm just moving my hand but  

if I have to move my whole body all of it if I  have to move my whole body I'm giving something  

some activity my all so I could be physically  doing something like moving some heavy rocks uh  

or carrying something or I could be running or  doing something like that it requires my whole  

body or it could require my mental effort as  well so I'm giving something my all so right  

now I'm trying to give this lesson my all I'm  giving you everything I'm trying to be here and  

excited and interested and helpful I'm trying to  give this lesson this video My All give it my all  

but I could you know I could be kind of lazy  and not speaking very clearly I don't want I  

want to go to Thanksgiving you know so if I'm not  giving this my all the opposite you know I'm just  

giving it actually we we'll teach you this in a  little bit uh in a little bit uh I won't reveal  

that yet but you understand the idea it's kind  of like uh basically doing something a lazy way  

or maybe you don't really require much effort  so it could be that you the opposite of this  

would be doing something easily like you sail  through something it's easy for you to do that  

thing like you zip through that thing you do it  quickly you sail through it you do it easily uh  

but here we're just talking about you put a lot  of effort and it can be physical effort or mental  

effort okay everybody getting it I think let's  see HRA says the phrase piece of cake reminds  

me another phrase to be a cakewalk yes so when  you describe something as easy you can call it  

a piece of cake or a cake walk I think I've talked  about this before if you all know what a cake walk  

is maybe some of you do not I'll give you a quick  explanation uh but there's just a game a very it's  

it's so easy that's why people describe something  that's really easy as a cakewalk usually you will  

have I and I don't know the maybe people have  different rules for this thing but you will have  

usually a like a grid or something on the ground  you will have some numbers and maybe people will  

play some music and you walk around like this  is two and three and four until you have your  

numbers here and people are just walking around  and when the Music Stops you stand on a number  

and then you get the cake for that number so  people will maybe usually for a bake sale or  

something there's a party or something in America  uh where you're having like a prize for something  

like that but it's so easy you don't have to  do anything you just walk around around and  

if you stand on the number for that for that  thing then you get that cake it's a cakewalk a

cakewalk and the interesting thing is  most Americans have not participated in  

a cakewalk actually I guess I can't say that  for sure probably most of them have not uh but  

everybody knows this expression even if they  don't know what this game is so I had not been  

in a cakewalk until I was in high school I think  one one year I I was at a party or something some  

some event and they had a cakewalk and I said oh  look it's a it's a real Cakewalk and so I got I  

got in the Cakewalk and I got a cake I don't know  I was I forget what number I was but it it really  

was easy I didn't have to think about anything  so remember if I'm talking about doing something  

easily that's a little bit different than doing  something uh and just calling it easy all right  

yes so so if we're just talking about uh different  ways to say easy then we've got Cakewalk or A's  

example Child's Play uh or piece of cake so you  can describe anything instead of using the word  

easy like that test was easy you could say that  test was a cakewalk that test was Child's Play  

that test was whatever and you're just replacing  this word with that one okay all right let's see  

what we got here a person can be tough but can't  be easy well well I don't know actually and this  

is an interesting thing about vocabulary uh  typically you will hear uh the word easy used  

with people if it's easy to like uh usually like  kind of like a negative way especially with women  

you say Oh that girl is easy it's like it's easy  to to sleep with her or something so that like  

someone being uh easy in that way so be careful  you can use things like that if you describe them  

like o that girl is easy all right so be careful  with your vocabulary and always continue to learn  

more that's how you will feel uh more confident  about using things like that let's see I'd give  

my all to have just one more night with you yes I  suppose you could you could do that I mean these  

These are kind of you're kind of adding uh like  kind of two different Expressions at the same  

the same time uh but yes like you you could use  that as a correct sentence I'd give my all like  

at doing something so like typically I'd give my  all like during the one night if that's what you  

mean by that or you're talking about like I'd  give my all doing something so that I can have  

one more night with you so you got that as well  uh let's see an ace if I'm let me know if I'm  

not pronouncing that correctly I've been listening  and watching a lot of English YouTubers but today  

I'm learning something completely new to me and  I'm enjoying it yes I'm glad to hear it uh yeah  

there's a lot of interesting vocabulary to learn  and really the point is uh for anybody you're  

learning with or any if you're trying to learn  something you want to improve your understanding  

really the goal is to get to certainty that you  feel confident about something so it's great to  

learn new information but when you when you learn  something new make sure you really feel confident  

about what that means and then you will enjoy it  even more and that way You' be starting uh you  

can use that thing as well easygoing is another  way to talk about yep take it easy take it easy  

means to relax take it easy that is a lyric a  miracul song I see but very good very good uh

stupidly so you make a mistake you feel bad  about doing something oh no I did something  

stupidly I did something stupidly all right  there are different uh different ways of  

expressing this as well just like all of the  other phrases we've covered uh but we'll just  

talk about let's see uh let's see what's a good  expression I could use cuz there are a couple  

different ones actually I'll give you a moment  to see if anybody can and think of anything so  

when you do something stupidly to do something  stupidly so I like uh was talking to some girl  

I wanted to impress her but I I don't know I  forgot my own name and I was very nervous and  

I I did something like that so how how silly of  me uh is a little bit different how silly of me  

is is a less uh it's like a less severe or a  less strong example of this so if you really  

did something stupid like that's not like an  example of doing something in like a silly  

way it's like ah how silly of me I forgot to  I don't know turn off the water or something  

like that all right so it's like I made like a  silly maybe careless mistake but it's probably  

not that big of a deal but typically people  feel worse about doing something oh that was  

kind of stupid of me you know so you can use it  but you will hear expressions like that like oh  

how silly of me you're talking about something  usually that happened that's not that big of a  

deal yeah so we might mess something up to  do something stupidly so you can mess up

something thought I'd give you  like a uh maybe like a kind of  

more interesting one uh or  to make make a make like a

boneheaded boneheaded

mistake all right so this is a little  SL slly different than just like to do  

something stupidly but I just wanted to give a  wide range of things you could do uh so to do  

something stupidly to make a boneheaded mistake  you can think of yourself like having like a hard  

kind of I don't know almost stupid head you  made a boneheaded mistake so typically if you  

do something like a particular thing you do it  wrong you do it badly uh especially if you made  

a mistake so this is different from not knowing  how to do something so if I'm just learning if  

I'm new at a company and I I put some paper in  the wrong box or something that's not really a  

boneheaded mistake I just don't know I'm learning  how to do something but if I should know how to  

do something but I do it incorrectly uh I'm  making a boneheaded mistake yeah so like if  

you if you go the go the wrong direction in a  street or something yes that would be a pretty  

boneheaded mistake especially if I'm driving the  wrong way to make a boneheaded mistake all right  

now a similar a similar thing instead of say like  a boneheaded mistake you can say to pull a bon

headed a boneheaded move so to to  talk about like a movement or an  

action similar kind of thing to pull a  boneheaded move uh so a mistake might  

be like a particular wrong thing that  you did yeah screw up is another good

example so like these are all similar stupidly  like you you probably would rarely hear like  

oh he did something stupidly you know but this is  just kind of a a a more like kind of grammatically  

in a textbook example kind of way of explaining it  and these are the more native conversational ways  

of saying these things but yes to do something in  again I could be doing something badly you make a  

mistake uh or like you're just doing it wrong or  you're not very good doing that particular thing  

so you screw something up you mess something  up you make a boneheaded mistake or pull a  

boneheaded move so to pull a particular move so  like you could pull a good move on someone you  

could pull a particular thing it just means to  do some kind of action to pull some kind of move  

it's like he pulled a move on someone this is  like a very casual kind of it sounds weird to  

non-native speakers because typically they talk  about pulling as a physic iCal pulling something  

but we're talking about doing an action to pull  a move isn't that interesting and this is what  

you will learn as you have a situation you will  hear different natives describe that situation in  

different ways to pull a move or to do an action  all right let me go back hit up anything else uh  

let's see a brain fart yes so if you have like  a uh you make an example of of like a mistake  

or something like you should have known something  or you just forgot like oh now was kind of a brain  

fart a brain fart a brain fart let's see uh let's  see yo yo what is that what's that what's that  

middle kanji Y what it is is that like your your  work or whatever why is it it's really like hard  

to read read kanji on here because it's so tiny  let's see tubasa KOB is gorgeous I think I'm just

what you're trying to do yeah my bad my mistake  my mistake my fault so if you're just trying to  

admit that you did something badly and take  responsibility for that you can say it that

uh let's see what do something excessively oh  that was a good one let's see you're being like  

excessive excessively let me write this better  for you I know people will complain about my

writing so to do something excessive you're  doing something excessively uh excessive just  

means you're doing something like in excess it's  more than you need so if I have a a cup of water  

here and I start pouring stuff into it I can  fill up the water here it's going up and now W  

now all the water is pouring out the top because  I've added an excessive amount of water so I put  

in too much okay so what's an a a great way to  say this to do something excessively so we're  

doing something too much more than needs to be  done I'll just give you an example here to go

overboard to go overboard so we might go  overboard with something I might go overboard  

with the spices in a salad or a soup or a meal or  something so I'm going overboard uh with all the  

presents I'm giving to my friend for his birthday  I'm doing it too much I'm giving him too much I'm  

going overboard overboard so you can think about  this overboard typically we have it's a similar  

boat example from before so you're inside the boat  you're okay but look at that oh no now something's  

like it's going over the side of the boat it's  too much it's going overboard going overboard  

to do something excessively to go overboard sort  of generously yes you could you could say that  

typically uh and again like the vocabulary so we  have something like go overboard and even that  

by itself it could mean a good thing or it could  mean a bad thing it just depends on the context  

it depends on the situation so to go overboard  with something I might go overboard with love  

for my children so if I love them I just love them  too much you know I love them so much I'm going  

overboard now most people would think that's a  good thing maybe you can never love your children  

too much but uh maybe you do go overboard with  like I don't know buying stuff you don't need or  

other things like that so it just depends uh  but yes you've got it right so it could mean  

generously or it could be doing something stupidly  is overdose something related only with drugs well  

again like you could usually usually vocabulary  has some kind of root so there's typically a a  

situation that happens we'll just put s for  situation here and then from that uh we will  

get some kind of vocabulary so we've been covering  this in this video usually I'm talking about this  

we begin with a situation something happens  how do we describe that thing and then we get  

from this we might even use this vocabulary in  related situations so like the overdose example  

uh the beginning situation is somebody takes too  many drugs and they die okay so they overdosed  

on something so then we get the vocabulary of over  dose so this is actually two things if you look at  

it to do something too much you over do something  all right like I'm going overboard over here it's  

like more than you need okay so we can also like  this I I don't actually know and and sometimes I  

I think of vocabulary like what's a good way  to help people understand it even if the the  

actual origin of the word might be different so  we can talk about being like above bored or just  

bored by itself of of like a proper level of  something and then you go beyond that you're  

doing too much all right so in a similar way  we have like a regular dose of medicine so a  

dose so just this part over here so a regular  dose of headache medicine might be one or two  

pills if I have a headache I will take a dose or  maybe two doses of that so the proper dose the  

amount of something and typically we talk about  a dose of something uh it's from the situation  

of giving medicine all right but you might have a  dose of something like you need a dose of cookies  

you need a dose of sunshine in your life okay so I  can take this idea from the situation of medicine  

we get the idea or the phrase of dose but then  we can apply that in other situations and this  

is how you start thinking more like a native  because you're beginning with a situation you  

learn the vocabulary we get from that and then  how we might apply that in other situations so  

to overdose means to take too much but I could  overdose on lots of things I could overdose on  

sugar maybe I eat too much sugar I especially  over Thanksgiving people overdose on Turkey you  

might hear that on the news so if you're in the  United States tomorrow uh you might hear people  

like well if you didn't overdose on turkey and  stuffing and other delicious Thanksgiving food  

you should come out and you know do something  whatever that thing is all right but yes so we  

this is why like often Learners will be  beginning with some vocabulary and they  

don't really understand where that vocabulary  comes from so they don't know how to play with  

the words the way natives do but I'm trying to  get you to think about it in the opposite way  

we begin with the situation the vocabulary comes  from that situation and then we can apply that  

vocabulary in various related situations  okay hopefully that makes sense uh let's

see and okay I think I got that Alejandra I  didn't mean to hurt your feelings yes that's  

true you also hear that in song lyrics ilder uh  hi there Drew let's get some new aha moments with  

you hopefully I've shared a few if any of this  vocabulary is new for you or if not then maybe  

your English is already at an awesome level and  you're already using these things perfectly but  

hopefully I can extend or increase or improve uh  the amount of certainty you feel about things you  

can give that uh each time you feel a bit  more certain that's when you get that aha  

moment so you can have an aha moment about the  same vocabulary as you feel stronger and more  

confident about it so maybe you hear like the word  overdose and then you hear oh look at that I can  

use overdose on sugar overdose on music overdose  on coffee overdose on anything else but typically  

we're talking about overdosing on something like  you just get too much of it and often it's a like  

a maybe a positive thing to overdose on Love or  Whatever xdl again yesterday I played Call of  

Duty I clicked the start button but Activision  doesn't want me to enter the game they just  

want to make some bugs so more people can buy  their cood products yeah good old Call of Duty  

I've actually never played Call of Duty uh I did  play back in college I played a lot of uh Counter  

Strike which I enjoyed I I probably enjoyed that  too much I overdosed on Counter Strike I think I  

think I played it too much uh but lately I didn't  answer this question I think last week but the the  

video game that I've been playing actually not so  much recently but I was playing is Sniper Elite 4  

so I was enjoying that game uh let's see buan says  over the limit right yes so you're doing you're  

doing something too much what a nice conspiracy  yes some interesting things that companies do to  

try to get more money out of people all right uh  let's see hray says today is labor Thanksgiving  

day here in Japan oh okay originally celebrated as  the Harvest Festival in the Imperial family well  

thank you I may forget that but that's it's easier  to remember it's okay we got Thanksgiving uh in  

Japan I guess uh I don't know if they would call  that I don't know I don't know the what's the name  

of that you can tell me the Japanese name for that  so they like the Japanese uh name for the English  

Thanksgiving is kanasa uh but let's see I don't  I don't know what actually what day it is um what  

what they call it in in Japanese for this day then  dose and dosis means the same I don't know what a  

dose a doses Oh you mean doses like you're talking  about multiple doses uh but the former is English  

and the latter is Spanish ah okay yeah I don't  know if that if that means the same thing or not  

but maybe it does you need a dose of coffee that's  true you could give someone a dose of someone or  

recommend someone get a dose of something  Alejandra says gotcha now Drew thanks God  

to hear it if I painted a surface excessively did  I go overboard yes so if you if you did something  

like if you put 30 layers of paint on something  when you only need one or two yes you're going  

overboard with paint you're going overboard with  the painting you can describe it both both ways  

uh can we say you need a dose of sleep yes you  certainly could you can you can ask or recommend  

people get a dose of all kinds of things you  need a dose of dose of sugar you need a dose  

of happiness you need a dose of lunch or you need  a dose of anything else and the point is uh even  

if it's not like a commonly used phrase native  speakers will understand what you mean and they  

will think oh like this person is understanding  the language like a native rather than trying to  

repeat some phrases that they learned somewhere uh  let's see yes you could overdose on work as well  

people are really en enjoying the overdose work  dos is an overdose but very good it makes it more  

memorable Jamie says is yawning acceptable manner  in English-speaking countries I had a lesson on I  

talky and the teacher kept yawning so curious uh  well I wouldn't I wouldn't just be yawning in like  

in a meeting or in a lesson or something like that  if I'm yawning I'm you know I'm going to cover my  

mouth or try to you know let me move out of the  camera or something uh but I wouldn't no it's  

it's not like a um I don't know not a polite thing  to do uh but I remember because I hated my French  

class in high school I used to sit in the front  of my class and try to I just like pretend to  

yawn and I would make the teacher yawn to mess up  the lesson a little bit and I had some fun doing  

that I hated that class all right says Ah again  overdose on or overdose up yes you could have both  

of those so you would overdose and that's one word  overdose so you would overdose on whatever or you  

could have a overdose of a a particular thing  as well so I could have like an overdose uh I  

overdosed on coffee this morning maybe I drank too  much of it or I uh let's see I had an overdose of  

uh actually you could you could say both of those  things you couldn't say you had an overdose of  

coffee or I overdosed on coffee both of those you  could say uh nice game I see have you ever played  

any version of Battlefield says Unice uh no I have  not I'm I'm not really like a fan of uh like those  

War Simulator games uh but I do like uh like  a like a tactical um you know like like Sniper  

Elite that's kind of example of something where  it's like it's like one man like you go in and  

try to kill all the bad guys like that that kind  of thing that's more my that's more my speed more  

my speed that's a good expression for you too it's  like more appropriate for me something I enjoy I'm  

confused with when we use overdose on or overdose  of all right let me make this clear for people

you like the you would use them the same  way but in a sentence it would be like I

overdosed on coffee so the same  thing or I had an overdose of

coffee all right so I overdosed on something like  this is the the verb here or I had an overdose  

like I had too much of something so they mean  the same thing but we're talking about like to  

overdose on something like I overdosed on work  all right so this is the verb meaning I worked  

too much but the verb here is I had an overdose  of something like that so I have had an overdose  

of a particular thing so you can talk about  you can use both of them like overdose of or  

overdose on but it just depends are you talking  about the verb overdose or you're talking about  

having an overdose of something all right let's  see El nice to see you there I finally made it

earthquakes yes you could have that as well go  mad go over the top uh asks KO well to go mad  

there are different ways of using go mad you could  mean go mad like I really like something like I

my my level of something I need to do it up  here this is the sufficient level of energy  

or the amount of something but I only do  it at this level so this is insufficient  

so if I do something insufficiently uh I'm  just going to write this it won't fit it's  

too long of a word to fit in this space uh but  we'll just say half let's see halfhearted h e

a h a r t e d half hearted l so to do something  halfheartedly you can think about your heart and  

this is a similar expression to what we talked  about before about giving something your all  

to give something your all so I'm going to  use all of my heart in something but now H  

maybe I'm a little bit tired or lazy I'm going  to do something halfheartedly halfheartedly so  

I'm only using half of my energy half heart Ed  ly to do something insufficiently and typically  

this is when you like you don't put all of your  energy uh it's it's more about the feeling of  

something so I could be working at a job like  I'm I don't know I'm working at a a register  

at a grocery store and I'm just yeah hello how  are you and I'm typing things and scanning stuff  

but I'm kind of halfhearted about it half-hearted  about it uh and maybe like my manager comes over  

he says hey are you feeling okay you're you're  you don't look very good or you you have kind  

of a lower energy today so I'm doing something  halfheartedly I don't have my heart in it I can  

also say similarly like my heart my heart's  not in it my heart's not in it so I'm doing  

something but mentally I'm not really there  or I don't enjoy doing something my heart's  

not in it my heart's not in it my heart's not  in it now I will tell you a similar expression  

it's similar but they mean something a  little bit different uh and this is half

asked like half ass so we'll draw like here's a  that's that's kind of a bad butt butt I guess a  

butt let me see here kind of kind of looks like  that okay that's a that's a butt you know like  

like your butt some here's some legs here as  well so to do something half fast means like  

you're not really putting much effort into that  thing so I'm supposed to water my flowers during  

the day but I don't really care I just water them  a little bit I'm kind of doing it in a halfast way  

so maybe I'm actually in a good mood so it's not  really halfhearted but it's a half-assed way I I'm  

not really I'm not like putting my whole ass into  it you know all right so these are two different  

Expressions but you will hear them used in similar  situations but just remember half-hearted this is  

really talking about like your mood about doing  something so I could be working but I don't really  

feel excited to be there I'm I'm it's kind of  half-hearted a half-hearted effort but if I'm  

doing something half asked I'm actually doing  that job poorly so I'm not I should be watering  

all these flowers here but I'm just like watering  some of them you know it's a half-ass effort yes  

so many of the things I like to teach some new  uh vocabulary but these are very commonly used  

half-hearted uh and half asked as well now it's  not necessarily like it might sound like slang  

uh just because it's got the word ass in it but  people will you will use this you will hear this  

especially in movies uh but yeah you can remember  though all right let's see all right see if we  

got everybody all right get some examples and  some review yes that's correct so every day I  

just write down about 10 vocabul and learn it as  you said so awesome yeah so you can uh re just  

really make sure you get lots of examples and  with naturally varied review one part of that  

is just getting different examples of sentences  of that same vocabulary but we also want to hear  

this from different speakers so we're prepared  when we hear it in movies so if you hear me I'm  

speaking quite clearly you can understand what I'm  saying but often people will not speak so clearly  

all right so we really want to make sure you get  lots of good examples like this is why we do what  

we do in fluent for life we really want to make  sure you get lots of different examples to make  

sure people are well prepared for conversations  uh let's see if I missed anything ildar again  

when the wind is so strong for riding uh kers  name this weather overdose kite surfing I mean  

ah yeah I've never tried that before but it looks  like a lot of fun all right anybody else that we  

missed here what's the difference between its  and its ah okay well this is actually you can  

just Google that but very quickly if you have a  contraction so if I have it whenever you have a  

contraction there that means you can pull  something apart so this would be it is all  

right like it is hot or it's hot I can use both  of those things but if there's just its there's  

no apostrophe here it's not a contraction see you  can't pull it apart and this just means it's the  

possessive all right so like his shirt her shirt  its shirt so if we have like a like here's like  

an alien uh creature you know this is kind of a  bad just imagine that's an alien uh it put some  

more arms or legs or something yeah as an alien  we don't know if that's like a boy alien or a  

girl alien or whatever we just say it so it has  it has one eye it has one eye yeah they are green  

maybe I guess some aliens are green I don't I  don't know maybe they are different colors so  

even on earth like we are different colors you  know maybe aliens are different colors too maybe  

theyve got I don't know purple and uh stuff like  that so it so its eye its eye is yellow its eye  

is yellow so we wouldn't say it is because that  would be it is I which we wouldn't say but it's  

it just means like the the possessive of that  thing so be careful I know this it seems like  

the opposite because like we would have like  John and then there's apostrophe there like  

John's thing it's just like it's his we're talking  about that uh but these are two different things  

with the apostrophe and without the apostrophe  yes it could also mean it has something that's

true all right I think let's see if I got that  uh half F A that's hilarious bro glad you're  

enjoying it yes half-heartedly is related to doing  something insufficiently but putting half feelings  

into it right yes so you're you're doing something  but your your heart is not in it my heart is not  

in it my heart's not in it my heart is not in it  so I just don't feel it's like yeah I'm here but

I'm kind of half-hearted I'm making a half-hearted  effort but I could be doing something I could be  

like very excited about doing it but I'm doing  it in a half half-ass way so I'm not doing it  

correctly and properly so that's more the the  key point there when you're doing something in  

a half-ass way you could be excited to be doing  it but you're just not doing it well uh I think  

Americans use ass word everywhere am I right I've  heard crazy ass yeah so people will people will  

put ass and [ __ ] and [ __ ] and things like  that just into into sentences it's it's it's a  

degradation so it's degrading the language it's  a little bit lazy but yeah you can you can say  

yeah it's it's kind of crazy A crazy thing a  crazy ass thing kind of kind of way and you'll  

notice the language uh changes over time this  way as people get a little bit more lazy with  

their speech more people are texting they don't  know how to spell things anymore so you find that  

you know people who are hiring jobs uh even like  a hiring manager at a company maybe they will get  

job applications from people and they're lots of  spelling mistakes that's way you probably seen uh  

like grammarly ads you know it's like you know  spell stuff correctly you get grammarly don't  

don't look stupid don't half ass it don't half  ass that job application now all right uh let's  

see Timo says listening or reading which is more  effective with speaking exercises your opinion is  

important well like again it's not like reading  or listening is important the point is that you  

should be doing both and you should be getting  exam examples from lots of different lots of  

different things so you listen to one person and  you listen to another person you read something  

maybe you watch something or you listen whatever  that is you might even try writing those things  

um out as well but that's what you should be doing  so don't don't think about maybe just like one of  

those is important and the other is not they're  all quite important all right no enthusiasm yes  

that's another way of saying everybody give  folk a thumbs up yes feel free to click that

choice but when we have to learn to recognize  different ways to say it yeah uh and so you  

will hear that you'll hear people you know giving  like a halfhearted speech or you see somebody you

his brother can I sleep here with you and his  brother responded if you're growing up my ass  

can you tell me the meaning of that uh I don't  remember if he said that proba probably didn't  

mean growing up my ass he probably meant growing  on my ass I don't know you could do a search for  

that like Home Alone script and see what it  is but it would mean uh I think he probably  

said something like the only way you could sleep  with me is if you're growing on my ass they they  

probably wouldn't use growing up my ass cuz it'd  be kind of like it's on the inside a little bit  

and that's that's a little bit that's a little  bit gross for a kid's movie but so he was he was  

telling a joke so Kevin uh mcau culan you imagine  this is uh this is his bed right here so this one  

guy maybe he doesn't he has like he doesn't have  uh room for for two people but let's just imagine  

he has a double bed and so mcau caulin is like  hey can I can I sleep with you on your bed and  

he says well he's basically saying yeah you can  sleep with me if you're growing on my ass so any  

anything that's I mean if it's on him already  of course it's sleeping with him so he's making  

a joke like yeah sure you can sleep with me if  you're growing on my ass but he's not growing  

on his ass he's not like a plant I mean imagine  like a plant growing on his ass now I don't know  

the exact quote but you can probably look that  up just look up Home Alone script and then look  

for I don't know growing on ass or something  like that I'm sure we could you could Google  

that and just find out what that is but yes that's  that's what that means so no you cannot sleep with  

me uh unless you're growing on my ass you guys  all right yeah so I mean you're you're probably  

talking like you probably have the right meaning  but maybe the exact words are just different  

but uh bosen says could you please give me a new  slang word I've probably never heard of uh I don't  

know well hopefully I do you know everything  I've taught in this video if not review all  

those things don't worry about trying to learn  like brand new stuff just Master a few things  

that you already know and make sure you can use  them because I I can imagine there are probably  

some things you know already but you're not 100%  confident about using those in your conversation

if you say like up my ass typically we mean and  I don't want to have to draw like a picture like

that some people are not good at doing that uh but  this is the basic idea so doing something without  

knowing exactly how you are going to do it often  we feel like we are going through life this way  

maybe oh no I don't know exactly what I'm going  to do I don't have a specific plan I'm just just

all right so again this is like while I'm while  I'm continuing to do an action without a plan  

I'm winging it I'm improvising so I it's like uh I  don't know if I'm saying this uh but I'm guessing  

did I pronounce that correctly I like to like to  try to sound like I speak Spanish even though I do

not is that correct let me know but that is it  you said it well awesome yeah I don't know uh  

much Spanish actually the friend of mine that  came out to visit me uh he was uh I think his  

mom is Mexican and he knows a little bit of  Spanish and his dad knows a little bit of  

Spanish too but the only Spanish I know I think  I've told this I probably told this story before  

uh so I took I just told before about how I  would yawn in French class because I didn't  

like that class and I would in my Spanish class  in college so I took Spanish in college and I  

failed it uh and I still don't remember much  of that but yeah it was like a year of I had  

to take a year of of of Spanish and I hated it  uh but I would I would go to the to the back  

of the class before the class and I would  set the clock ahead so I'd move the clock  

ahead to to set it ahead uh and near the end  of the class I would say like what time is it  

and then uh and then like we would we would  get out of class a little bit early I don't  

think it really helped me because I had to go  to class a little bit early to set the clock  

ahead so it didn't really help me but I felt I  felt better that we we had like less class time  

and then I also just from Predator uh let's see  what I don't how did that how does that Spanish

go uh and that's if you for you for you span it  KES correctly too okay very good all right well

are learning new vocabulary always pay attention  this is my simple drawing of a situation so pay  

attention watch what's happening think about  the context the situation and then from that  

you will get all these different examples of what  natives will say so the vocabulary comes from the  

situation we want to begin with the situation  understand what what is happening and that will  

tell us oh that's interesting like we could  say uh do something quickly like that person  

is moving very quickly or or we could say they're  like blazing through something all right to blaze

through another good phrasal verb for you to blaze  through yeah it just flew by really it's like an  

hour and a an hour and a half I guess almost 80  uh almost yeah 90 minutes almost all right so we  

could describe someone doing something quickly we  could say they like flashed through it or blazed  

through it or powered through it like like even  if it was a little bit difficult they just went  

through it anyway okay hopefully that makes sense  but you should be paying attention for situations  

this is how you learn like a native and when  you understand vocabulary this way you can then  

take that vocabulary and play with the language  you can begin using something just like I used  

earlier about saying like whole ass so like nobody  uses that but people would think that was funny if  

I'm using this in a uh like in an expression or  whatever like yeah I gave it I gave it like my  

whole ass today I wasn't just a half ass thing  that was my you got my whole ass today so it's a  

little bit rude you know but but you know people  could find that funny anyway uh when you learn  

Le this way you will feel much more confident  and fluent and remember you become fluent first  

then you speak so as soon as you understand more  you will feel more confident about the language  

uh I always enjoy your classes Alejandro Drew you  have Charisma look at that what is there what's a  

Spanish word for Charisma or is it like K Kara  kind of I'm trying to think of like a good way  

to a good way to say that because a lot of a lot  of Spanish words we just change the pronunciation  

A little bit for English like Univision is like  unision you know like this like sounds I I used  

to love listening to I I would listen to a radio  show uh in it was a Spanish radio show called  

kwi and I I really like I couldn't understand  much of it at all but I just like listening to  

the announc he was like K bu like what's what's  good or whatever whatever that means but I would  

I would work with these uh I think there were  some like Spanish speaking construction guys but
