How To Speak English Continuously, Without Hesitating Or Translating

okay I think we're live we'll give YouTube a  moment as usual I am Drew Badger the founder  

of englishanyone.com and welcome to another live  video here on YouTube let me know where you're  

from if you have any questions as we go through  this I will as usual keep my eye on the chat  

but I think this should be an interesting video  especially for people who know a lot of English  

but still struggle to speak and part of this is  going to be as I'll show you about being able  

to connect different things so that you connect  things when you speak if you can learn to connect  

things uh as you understand and learn the language  you will feel much more confident about speaking  

all right so George uh Jimmy nice to see you there  glad to see chat is working I think we should be  

working fine over here as well all right and make  sure we're working okay all right uh so uh let's  

see oh Paris nice to see you there so what we're  going to do today I want to demonstrate a few  

things about uh developing fluency uh the first  one is that you have to focus the second one is  

that you need variation so we we have kind of a  you can think about a make sure this fits in here  

like a range within which you're trying to learn  so you're not trying to learn a bunch of random  

information you're taking a particular topic  or a particular even something as simple or as  

focused as a a particular word or phrase and then  you're getting variation on that so maybe you're  

hearing it in different tenses or from different  speakers or at different speeds or whatever uh but  

it's within that range that actually develops your  fluency so you're not trying to repeat the exact  

same thing over and over again which is boring and  it's going to be really just demotivating for you  

uh as you try to learn you want to get a range of  things but within again uh within a a particular  

Focus so there there's this balance that you need  between having a variety of things but also having  

a structure or having a focus that's guiding the  learning so what we're going to do today uh is  

we're going to fill out this chart together uh  I know it might seem kind of boring you're just  

looking at a chart like this but I promise you  uh you'll discover some interesting things about  

learning uh and about developing fluency as we go  through this uh the first one is that it doesn't  

matter where we start on this chart so we've  got 16 spaces over here we've got four words  

here four words over here uh and again the goal  is really to develop a network of understanding by  

understanding the connections between all of these  things as you learn them you begin naturally to  

see more connections between things and it's these  connections that help you make connections when  

you speak so when you can connect many different  ideas or you can learn how to connect sentences  

together or words together that's how you can  speak continuously so often people might get  

stuck thinking about particular words because  they only have one thing they know how to say  

instead of being able to as I call uh Move  Like Water where you're able to transition  

between different phrases maybe you forget one  thing but you can easily switch to something  

else so natives are doing this all the time and  it's because of how they learn so instead of of  

of even trying to like take a word and memorize  it you you develop the the understanding of each  

of these things individually as you see them all  connected all right I'm trying to explain a little  

bit ofit uh a little bit about this before  we go through the chart but I I thought it  

would be helpful just to explain what you're  about to see so a typical lesson might be we  

give you a word like stand and then we give  you a translation of that word in your native  

language and then we give you some example  sentences but instead what we're going to do  

is we'll take a word like Stan and you can see how  we get slightly different meanings of the word as  

we compare them your brain is developing a better  understanding of the word by seeing a network a  

a a kind of range of different connections and  that's what allows you to understand the word  

like a native so when you understand like  a native you're able to speak like a native  

that's how it works all right uh so it looks like  there aren't any questions I'll take a look very  

quickly before we get started uh uh let's see AR  am there at 3 in the morning you can always watch  

you don't have to watch this live so this is live  right now but if you're watching it later that's

says in your last live session I said I speak  English but I don't sound like American so how  

can I improve my pronunciation sorry for the  typing mistake oh no you so you've been you've  

been waiting for that for like a week oh no um  if you want to improve your pronunciation there  

are two things you need to do I'll just mention  this very briefly before we talk about this uh  

the first one is that you need to understand the  pieces of words so the individual sounds that make  

up the language there are 44 sounds of English uh  and then hearing how those are are produced so if  

we have let's say I'm just going to fill in this  little thing over here if we have a word like cat  

so you're learning the individual sounds of the  letters for this pronunciation Comm combination  

so we've got C at cat so this is one word now we  might change that if we have c a t e this becomes  

Kate so the pronunciation changes and if you  want to improve your pronunciation you just have  

to learn these rules so that's the first part of  it the second part of it is seeing how different  

natives pronounce things in everyday life so the  pronunciation of a word uh like let's say hello  

and I'm sorry if I'm confused using anyone I'm  just I'm putting random words in these spaces I  

will erase them in a moment uh but a a a correct  pronunciation of a word by itself like hello I  

might change that when I'm speaking with someone  it's like hey hello like I might say it fast or  

you know something like that so the pronunciation  might change uh or even if we have something like  

uh going to becomes G to so we take words and  and when they're spoken the pronun iation changes  

so it's these two things one is learning the  individual pieces of pronunciation those are the  

rules of English called phonics uh and to learn  those just click on the link in the description  

below this video to get Frederick it's an app that  will take you through and let you discover all of  

these things yourself kind of like what we will do  today actually uh and then the other way is just  

to watch you know videos like this and then also  videos of regular native speakers just speaking  

as they normally do and the more examples you  get the better your pronunciation will become  

because you're seeing lots of different ways uh  similarly to how this is uh basically everything  

I do talks about this kind of variation within a a  a framework or within a theme or a range uh what I  

call naturally varied review so we don't want to  just look at the word sit we want to see how sit  

Works in different situations and the same thing  with uh pronunciation so even though you might  

have a a particular sound for a word uh let's see  here we really want people to know that there is  

variation and native speakers will say different  things in different situations or different people  

will pronounce the same words slightly differently  so as you get all of those examples you will  

feel much more confident about improving your  pronunciation so that's how you do it uh but the  

basic idea is to get many examples uh from natives  along with understanding how Phonics work works so  

sorry you've waited a long time to get that but  that's how you improve your your listening and  

pronunciation uh let's see 8:33 in the morning in  Indonesia I'm Korean and I love your explanation

cover every word I I don't want to do like every  word in the English language or the point the  

point is not to try to like teach you everything  it's to you know the the expression it's better to  

give a man a fish or excuse me teach a man to fish  so if you give a man a fish he can eat for a day  

but if you teach a man to fish he can eat for a  lifetime uh so this idea is more about explaining  

how language learning works and obviously if you  have someone to help you do it you can get fluent  

even faster but for the many people who like to  learn by themselves this is basically what we're  

trying to do uh so again it will become more clear  you will discover more as we go through it I just  

want to make sure I get uh these comments before  I start uh Hanan says how can I stay focused in  

something I got your course I studied it but  three months after that I gave up well what why  

did you do that number one you have to remember  why you're learning so whatever the the thing is  

you're you're learning and it could be you know  it doesn't matter if it's a course or something  

and often even the things we want to do like right  now I'm writing a book uh so I'm writing a book  

that explains a lot of this and covers everything  I've discovered over 20 years about fluency and uh  

there's actually not a lot that's changed uh about  how I teach but since I'm able to explain it a lot  

better now than I thought I should put it all in a  book so even though I think a book is a good idea  

it's still kind of a pain in the ass to write it  I'm still like ah okay how do I say this or you  

know how do I organize the book lots of questions  I have like that um so even if there's something  

you want want to do you can still feel maybe  discouraged or demotivated sometimes it happens uh  

but I I try to remind myself of the bigger picture  which is if I'm able to write this and release  

this book which I will very soon it's actually  coming along uh but uh if I'm able to do that then  

many people will benefit because they can get all  of the advice that I've learned over 20 years in  

one book uh so uh that motivates me greatly and um  and the the basic thing for anybody doing courses  

is try to remember why you're learning so if you  have a a bigger you know picture or whatever the  

thing is for your uh for your life if maybe you  need a better job or you just want to communicate  

with people better that's the that's kind of the  the fire that keeps you motivated I made a video  

about this actually it was it talked about the  fire uh look for that if you search my channel for  

that word specifically you should find a a video  I think I made a couple of months ago uh talking  

about that about staying motivated uh to learn but  I mean again even the things that you want to do  

even if it's easy for you to do uh you know people  can get lazy or we can you know lose interest or  

get distracted by something else there are lots of  reasons uh why we can be reminded of something but

aak Japan uh let's see and the last time I  forgot to add the sound I want to I don't

to hear Jimmy today I learned that I should  say I was born instead of I born born isn't  

the past tense sometimes uh English is so tricky  yes that's true as as Drew rocks I learned a lot  

with his amazing work now I'm fluent awesome if  you know other people who would like to improve

no FH says I'm Japanese do you know any words  uh to be careful of in conversations such as

uh rather than being careful about particular  words you should just learn to say them with  

confidence so like for me uh speaking Japanese I  don't want to be worried about like oh no should  

I not say that word I should actually just do the  opposite which is is becoming confident about the  

the words I want to say uh and it says I would buy  your book I'm glad to hear it yes uh I'm I'm sure  

the book will be like very cheap when I do release  it uh but the the more important point is for me  

to get the ideas out there and I think the book  is the best way for me to do that because there  

actually uh there are a lot of different things  but it's all around one basic idea which is that  

you get fluent first and then speak after that  uh and that's going to help uh a lot of people  

tremendously in the way it has helped me get  fluent in Japanese uh manolin says hello Drew it's

like learning vocabulary and even if you know all  of these words the point is not really okay like  

I know what play means or sit or stand or all of  those the point is to teach your brain to think  

about these things like a native and we do that by  making all of these different connections and the  

more connections you make the easier it is for you  to speak because you can either remember things  

faster or switch to other things uh whatever  you'd like to do so we can pick any one of these  

things uh we don't have to start this is not like  filling in a grammar table because typically when  

people are learning things in the real world they  don't have a structured example they just get an  

example of something like oh sit uh at something  like that so let's begin here uh and rather than  

uh I'm going to try to draw some very simple  pictures for this I will explain what I'm doing  

at the same time but hopefully that makes it a  little bit easier uh for people to understand uh  

so here we have I'm going to put a little table  over here or kind of like that uh and we have a  

little guy here and here's a chair so this person  is sitting at a table so to sit at a table sit at  

a table all right now I want to make this a little  bit uh a little bit clear without explaining too  

much about things so we can cont contrast this  uh very simply with another similar example uh  

of this person sitting on the table all right now  again the point is not to memorize what the word  

sit means it's to look at a variety of related  examples this is naturally varied review and to  

let your brain naturally get these aha moments of  oh okay I understand what that means now so when  

I'm sitting on a table look at that I'm actually  sitting on a table over here that's a little bit  

funny but here I'm sitting at the table all right  so I'm kind of kind of close to the table I've  

got my legs under there and usually people sit at  the table when they're going to have a meal okay  

so to sit at a table now I someone mentioned the  word by before sitting by by a table would usually  

mean a little bit further away I don't want to  go into detail about that uh but that would be  

the difference there so if you see someone like  oh I'm kind of I'm kind of by the Whiteboard now  

maybe I'm I'm standing a little bit further away  from it but here I am at the Whiteboard okay so  

I'm kind of within this immediate area all right  so see again we're trying to build a whole network  

we want to fill in this whole chart here uh and  just show you some different examples of things  

and these are even just just one example we could  even have more uh for some of these but I just  

want to go through this quite quickly and make  sure you understand understand what's happening  

hopefully uh I will keep my eye on the chat but if  people have no questions about this it should be  

pretty easy to understand now let's think about  something else now I just used the example over  

here so let's draw instead of just doing all of  these we can really go anywhere with this board  

with these uh with this chart over here so here  is a white board I can even draw a picture of this  

chart on the Whiteboard look at that so here's me  standing here uh and I'm appointing to some stuff  

up here so I am standing at the Whiteboard all  right so to stand at this particular thing stand  

at the Whiteboard all right so pretty simple  you can see again like as we as we get more  

than one example within a column or a row so this  is called a column and this is a row over here so  

row row row row column column column column so  as you start filling in the chart that's where  

your brain is starting to make more connections  and then you can notice patterns which allow you  

to apply that thinking to other situations like  other vocabulary that are not uh listed on this  

board when I say in front of uh is it not the same  now I could be behind the board as well like if I  

go like actually back here I'm going to go like  under the board and behind it you can't see me  

but I'm still at the board so even if I'm standing  behind the board I'm still at the board so I can  

be in front of the board and be at the board or  I could be behind the board and I'm still at the  

board as well okay so at you again like that's  a good question uh at refers to the kind of area  

immediately around something so just like we have  uh the area immediately around uh this table right  

here so by is a little bit further away I might  be close or near the table but right now I'm at  

the table I could touch it all right so that's  how close I am so the same thing with the board  

so yes right now I'm in front of the board or I  could be behind the board as well uh but I would  

still be at the board in both of those cases good  question all right now we can pick out something  

else remember when you're typically learning  things as a native child you might just get  

some of these random examples like you just hear  something like this or one so what which example  

which Square would you like to do next anyone else  just the first person to tell me what combination  

up here would you like to do next all right I'm  going to take a quick drink I missed last week  

because I had like a sore throat so I couldn't  speak very well and I'm still I'm still recovering  

really but so if you don't pick one I will so go  ahead I'll give you 10 seconds oh Andre says stand  

in all right now let's see one by four work in  versus workout please okay everybody comes in uh  

but Andre came in first with stand in so stand  in what might be an example can you think of a  

reason why we might say stand in where would  you stand in something stand in something how  

about here we have a a person here and we'll  give him an umbrella because he is standing

in the ring to stand in the rain to stand in the  rain now remember I'm not going to go through  

every example uh that I could think of for for  all of these things the point is more just to  

understand at least one good example that helps  you uh helps you understand that uh Ivan says what  

is Frederick uh if you click on the link below  this video you'll you'll learn what Frederick  

is but basically it's an app that teaches you the  language like a native speaker learns it uh so you  

will discover how to learn the sounds of English  the same way natives do and you will improve your  

listening and your pronunciation all right so here  we have we are standing in I think someone else  

gave the example of uh like standing in a row  yes you could be standing in a pool so anytime  

let's say we have some kind of space make sure  that fits over here so some kind of box or area  

something like that uh I could be sitting in that  same thing uh or I could be standing in that same  

thing so I could be sitting down in the rain I  could sit in the rain too or as some other people  

have said I could also be standing uh like in a  line over here or standing in a row so standing  

in a line or standing in a row standing in a in a  in a line or standing in a rope so pretty easy to  

understand when you start seeing some different  examples of it okay so here I am I'm standing at  

the board I'm not standing in the board I'm not  inside the board I'm just standing at the board  

like right now I'm actually standing at the board  and looking at a picture of someone standing at a  

board but over here this person is standing in  the ring so I could be right now standing in a  

room I'm not standing at a room I'm just I'm I'm  in inside this space I'm standing in a room right  

now okay so other examples for this one like I  could be standing at a door all right or even  

this one like I could be standing in a doorway  let's say this is you know right where you open  

the door I could be standing uh right under this  space here so I'm standing in a doorway standing  

in a doorway all right pretty easy all right  uh says can you stand figuratively sure uh so I  

could stand for something I'm not talking about  for that's not one of our prepositions in this  

example uh but it means like something I support  like I Stand For Freedom rather than oppression as  

an example so I stand for something I stand for uh  often you will hear politicians especially right  

now there is a presidential election coming  up in the United States and people will talk  

about what they stand for so I stand for jobs I  stand for this it just means I support that thing  

uh or that's what I recommend so that's using  it figure it's figuratively so you're you're  

kind of stepping up I stand for that particular  thing okay so yes as I mentioned uh there could  

be multiple ways you could like sit for something  or stand for something or even some of these other  

ones I'll give you some examples uh but the point  is it's not to try to understand every use of the  

word it's really to build a network in your mind  uh that really helps you understand the vocabulary  

well so rather than just trying to memorize a  word by itself with a you know a translation  

or get a definition it's better to get these  this kind of network with this naturally varied  

review as you get a varied example or varied  examples of things that's what really helps you  

understand things hopefully uh you should already  be feeling oh like I wonder about this one or that  

one or that one and your mind begins uh developing  this understanding which allows you to think of  

these patterns for even things you have not yet  learned but you would be able to figure that out  

uh usually by just creating this kind of network  so your brain is thinking like this automatically  

I'm just trying to show you what's happening when  you learn and especially if you learn uh in the  

right way so basically uh giving your brain  more structure than than you would normally  

get so native like native english- speaking kids  their parents might say oh like she's playing with  

something like that so if we take with and play  over here so let's say I have like a little child  

just as a as an example this is a kid uh sitting  on the ground uh and they've got I don't know like  

some blocks over here so this child is playing  with some blocks so the child is playing with some  

blocks so that so uh like a child doesn't doesn't  usually get like a bunch of examples of things  

like this at the same time in a structured way so  this is what I try to do like when I'm when I'm  

teaching my own kids I actually do this because I  don't have as much time with them in English so I  

really want to make sure they get these examples  uh but this is the way your brain is thinking and  

it's trying to fill fill in these spaces as you  learn things yeah so igra says stand in the Gap  

that's the same kind of thing so if you have any  kind of space you're inside that thing and you are  

standing then you standing in the Gap all right  all right very quickly someone else pick another  

space over here any space on the board that you  would like we'll keep our little game going over  

here but hopefully this is starting to make sense  we've got one of these for each of these so far uh  

but we don't have anything for work all right  play on so what's an example of play on where  

where we might be uh playing on something we're  going to have let's see a uh uh we're going to  

make a little kind of clim climing toy thing over  here uh here's a little child hanging look at that  

so they're kind of hanging on top of that thing  they are playing on playing on this climbing toy  

to play on that thing or a child might be on the  slide something like that or they're playing on  

you know some other physical thing like they're  even just on a little Hill over here like they  

are playing they are doing some kind of thing but  standing on this hill so they are playing on on  

that thing over there so you might be climbing on  something uh like a child might be playing on a  

chair so this is describing the physical activity  and where it's happening pretty simple all right  

but you can see the difference now like when we  understand play we can see you know some fun is  

uh the child is having some kind of fun doing  something entertaining yeah that's supposed to  

be a little like a little Hill or a mountain or  something uh and so this one like the child is  

playing with something rather than playing so the  child isn't playing on the blocks they're playing  

with them all right like I could be you know  playing like I'm writing with this marker so I'm  

drawing these pictures with I'm drawing with this  marker I'm not drawing on the marker I'm drawing  

on the Whiteboard but I'm drawing with all right  I'm drawing with this over here all right so we  

we usually we like we would we would talk about  like for play at uh like you could play at a park  

you could you could talk about like being in that  physical space we just use that one since we're  

talking about play uh let's say there is a child  so we'll put a uh like a swing set and a slide  

over here so here's a slide uh and some swings  and here's a child running around yay he's at  

the park he is playing at the park playing at the  park okay now there are figurative uses for these  

as well I'll just give you one example for this  one like I'm playing at doing a particular job  

like I'm playing at being a doctor like I'm kind  of pretending to do that thing so you might play  

there's kind of the physical playing like this  where a child is running around and having fun or  

playing a video game or playing a game something  like that but there's also the the meaning of play  

where you're pretending to have a like a role in a  movie or a play or a drama that kind of thing like  

that so to play at doing something so someone is  playing playing at uh pretending to be some kind  

of role or part something like that but here we  just have a regular physical example uh like you  

well for the instrument example usually it's  just like play play the instrument so I play  

like I play the piano so we don't play you don't  play on the piano you just play the piano itself  

so you're playing the piano play the drums play  the guitar that kind of thing but here you can see  

like so the child is specifically on this piece of  equipment right here the child is playing on this  

and the child is playing at the park so both of  these things over here like even this child here  

if this is a park you know the child could be  oh like this child is playing at the park right  

here but for this one specifically uh the child  is not on anything in this picture the child is  

just maybe running around but they're playing  at the park so maybe they go home they could  

play at home as well play at home uh usually  if we're if we're using the example of a yard  

like to play uh like in your backyard usually we  would talk about in that area so I'm like playing  

in my backyard or playing in my front yard all  right but at if we're talking about like being  

at a like a physical location usually that's  got some kind of boundary to it uh like being  

at a park or being in your house then we talk  about playing at home or playing at the park

all right making progress hopefully as we  go through these your your brain should be  

uh should be thinking about this and and thinking  like oh I'm I'm making these connections over here  

uh let's see uh yes Lords uh just get Frederick  like uh Tom is talking about Tom is the is the  

the Frederick master so stand with me yes somebody  else mentioned stand with me so why don't we do

that so we have two people

I always keep drawing like too many legs over  here so this person is standing with that other  

person over here now this could be physically  standing with someone else or it could be even  

figuratively like I'm standing with my friend  we both agree about you know some like we want  

to take care of the environment or something  like that so I agree with him about that I  

stand with my friend so my friend believes this  uh and I also believe with that or believe that  

that same thing I'm supporting him so I'm standing  with my friend I'm standing with him all right so  

you can see how like something like this it can  help you understand a more figurative usage of  

some word but the idea is basically the same so to  be working with someone so standing with someone  

or standing for uh that other person I think we  mentioned that earlier uh but hopefully that makes  

sense uh let's and then John Lee says at at the  at Mark all right so look at that we're already  

making some pretty good progress and here you can  see some connections being made already so like  

stand we have 1 two three examples over here so  I could also sit with somebody else like I could  

sit with let's say I have a uh a pet cat over  here that's going to be a not very good picture  

of a cat oh my God there's a tail so that's me  uh sitting with my uh my my pet cat over here so  

I'm sitting with my cat all right so I could be  standing physically standing with is that a nio  

yes it's supposed to be a cat uh I'm sorry it's  supposed to be uh it's supposed to be a cat uh but  

here I'm just like sitting kind of sitting down on  the on the ground maybe sitting cross-legged but  

I'm sitting with my cat I'm sitting with my cat  all right so you're sitting down and with some  

physical thing I could be sitting with a book also  so if I'm sitting down I'm relaxing uh oh what are  

you doing oh I'm just sitting with a book so I'm  reading a book but I could say I'm sitting with  

a book sitting with a book so the same kind of  thing all right so here I could be playing with  

something sitting with something standing with  someone all right so what do you think work is  

now hopefully you guys are starting to as as we  fill in more of these then like the remaining  

one should become more clear and even if we put in  some additional words like additional prepositions  

or additional uh verbs something like that it  should become more clear automatically what we're  

learning this is how natives learn the language  now again uh natives are not learning it in like  

a structured way like this like I'm doing it but  what they're they're naturally filling in these  

spaces in their mind as they learn so Neil  says work with someone yes like I could have  

a uh like here's my computer over here uh and I'm  sitting here you know typing some things and then  

my other friend over here he's got his computer  uh and then like there's a another lady we work  

with she has a computer over here so we're all  working together these are the people I work with  

all right so I'm working with these people on  that thing all right so as you see the examples  

you don't learn with by needing a translation  you understand the word with by seeing varied  

examples of it all right hopefully this is this  is really like getting clear for people as we  

fill in all of these remaining spaces but that's  the basic idea so the cat sitting uh with a loaf  

a loaf position Ian yeah I don't know what what  kind of cat that's supposed to be but it's an  

abstract artistic cat I guess uh but again as I  look I'm playing with some blocks or I'm sitting  

with my cat or I'm standing with my friend  or I'm working with some fellow employees at  

some company so I could be at some company but I'm  working with these other people over here okay now  

another thing like right now I'm working with  a marker okay so I could be talking about like  

a tool that I'm using in the same way that's  another way to use work with so a person like a  

person who is a carpenter who makes things out of  wood they work with a hammer and nails they work  

with something like that all right or I could  talk about like something working with uh other  

materials like like I like to I'm an artist and I  like to work with uh you know particular kinds of  

paint so I work with uh paint like oil paint and  I don't know metal something like that so those  

are the materials that I work with so I'm doing  something some some kind of activity some kind of  

work and this is something I'm also doing that  work with so it could be a person or it could  

be a tool or a material or something like that  and again I'm giving you a wide range of these  

different examples so you become more confident  about how to use the vocabulary yourself all right  

so it's really the network it's not one particular  word uh that you that you learn that helps you  

understand the word and feel confident about using  it it's the network itself okay all right let's

jump over here to work on something uh let's say  I am like uh it's a good way to write this picture  

so I've got like a maybe a here's a desk and I my  piece of paper over here and I'm writing something  

so I'm sitting here and uh kind of looking down  and doing some writing my chair there and I'm  

working on a paper right now so I'm working on  something or I'm working on an art project or  

I'm working on something so I'm doing work on this  particular thing so maybe I'm making a sculpture  

like I'm working on my sculpture I'm working on  uh understanding something like that all right uh  

Baro says prepositions are kind of hard well they  become a lot easier when you understand understand  

like this all right is this easier for people  is this making things a little bit more clear  

let me know in the comments like click the like  button or uh just post a comment let me know if  

this is helpful for you or if I'm wasting my time  hopefully I'm not wasting my time uh but hopefully  

uh as you see the differences it's really what  what like seeing the like one thing by itself is  

is going to be more difficult to understand uh but  it's the connections uh that that actually show  

you how these things work together that also makes  the individual words more memorable okay all right  

sounds like people are are following me so we've  got work over here look at that so as we look at  

these different examples of work what's the next  space we should do which one it looks like we've  

got stand on we've got sit in work at and work  in something like that let see if I missed any  

other comments over here so Marco says it is uh  very English to put the preposition at the end  

after the verb just as you is it very English uh  well right now we're like we're basically making  

phrasal verbs uh and it it's just taking like just  to just you don't have to think about it like as a  

phrasal verb I'm just showing you uh if we combine  a verb and a preposition like this what do we get  

what kind of situation are we describing so even  just like stand stand at uh a particular thing or  

I'm standing like you know whatever that like  here I'm standing at the board it's not at the  

end of the sentence but the the point is really  just to understand stand and at as a combination  

all right uh is it correct all right looks like  people are getting it though curious about if  

I can use Stand in the Rain even if I don't have  an umbrella yes the the umbrella is not is not to  

like like I can be standing outside with with an  umbrella or not if I'm standing and it's raining  

outside then I'm standing in the rain now I could  more specific like not having the umbrella I'm  

actually standing you know I like it's it's it's  not perfectly clear if I mean you have an umbrella  

or do not but I I do know that person is in the  rain outside somewhere all right so good question  

but again uh that's another good example of as  we get more information we unlock more confidence  

because we erase more doubt uh let's see so yeah  we we don't have to put like uh in or on excuse me  

your so your question put the preposition at the  end after the verb ah yes so we don't we don't  

usually say like on sit or at stand like we we're  talking about the the action and then where we do  

the action all right so I could be describing  something like I am in the office like if I'm  

just describing where I am so I am in the office  or in my office working at a particular project  

all right so I'm working on you know whatever  whatever the or you know both of these things are  

fine uh you'll see like a slight slight difference  here for that uh but in in both of those cases I  

can be in a place and working at some other thing  so being in somewhere I'm not connected with any  

other verb in that example it's just using a  preposition by itself but if I'm talking about  

the specific action I'm doing plus where I'm doing  that thing uh then it it it becomes usually it's  

the uh the the verb followed by the preposition  so the verb first and preposition after that let  

make sure I can read these comments over here all  right uh and make sure okay like they are coming

through all right let's see an Islam says  is it correct or not or completely not  

correct to say playing at the Packard  so you we would be we would be playing  

uh playing in a yard typically playing in a in  in a backyard so we if we're going someplace  

else like we we could say we're playing at a park  uh or you're playing at home but the the backyard  

example is typically playing in the backyard T  typically in the backyard all right uh let's do  

so stand on okay so another example that was  a good one right there if we have a uh a l

matter so here's a person standing on a ladder  a ladder l a d d l a d d e r a ladder a ladder  

so standing on a ladder I could be standing  on uh standing on the road like standing in  

the middle of it standing on the road standing on  anything else I any anytime I could be standing on  

uh a mat like a like a Welcome Matt when I go to  somebody's house does a stand on something so look  

at that we've got all four of these done so we've  got stand on and we've got stand at so it's pretty  

it's pretty near to stand uh so stand on a roof  that would be another good example uh but we've  

got stand by is is like pretty close but standing  at is is right there all right so I'm standing by  

the board now I'm standing at the board now one  thing I will I will make a point about right here  

that you don't need to be so uh so worried about  um like if you're if you're if you're like oh like  

is Drew like by the board right now or is he at  the board like in this particular location native  

speakers aren't going to Care like like oh is  he by the board like oh he's by the board right  

now all right like does that mean 5T or 2 cm or  something like that it doesn't really matter all  

right but in General like at something means I'm  kind of doing something with with that activity  

so if we have like at right over here I'm at the  table you know I'm not like by the table I'm I'm  

kind of interacting in some way I'm I'm connected  to the table not just around the table or near the  

table okay so again as you see more examples of  it uh you will have a more nuanced or finely tuned  

understanding of words like this but don't worry  too much about uh like oh like is it like by or  

at or in or what like for for something like this  you could usually uh describe the same situation  

in different ways who was was that Tom that said  someone said on the on the ceiling so on the  

ceiling let me draw an example of on the ceiling  if you're if we have a room like this on standing  

on the ceiling would be like this that's a person  standing on the ceiling standing on the ceiling so  

you're in a standing position but you're on the  ceiling rather than standing on the floor all  

right you could do the same thing like standing  on the wall also maybe Spider-Man can do that I  

guess I don't know but that would be standing on  something like that so anytime you're you're on  

something else but in a standing uh standing you  know standing motion or like standing formation  

and you're standing on that thing uh uh so I  was asking the difference between a roof and a  

ceiling so if if we're in a like in a house like  this the roof would be the like the top the top  

outside part the ceiling is just the inside top  part of a room so you can think about this as  

the as the the top wall of a room uh and the  roof is the top like Outer Outer surface of  

a house or something like that so that's the  the roof is up here but this is the ceiling  

and sometimes if you have nothing up here this  this area is called an attic an attic a t i c  

Attic So that would be the space between the  ceiling and the roof and even in the Attic  

itself you've still got like underneath the roof  there's a ceiling uh ceiling there uh it should  

be just a atti SE let me see I'm making sure  I'm spelling that correctly I should let me

see yes there's no K on the end of that I'm  thinking I'm crazy for a minute uh let's see  

Aon says she was sitting in the middle of nowhere  look at that yeah we could just put could like put  

someone here uh just kind of sitting down kind  of you know got their legs you know together  

like that something she could be in sitting in  the middle of nowhere sitting in the middle of  

nowhere someone could also be sitting in the  rain or they are sitting in the sun sitting  

in the sunshine over here or we could even have  someone like let's say it's sunny but we've got  

a like a Shady Tree over here they are sitting in  the shade so I could be sitting in any of these  

things like this I'm sitting in the sun or I'm  sitting in the shade or sitting in a particular  

room or I could be sitting in the middle of  nowhere all right all good examples look at  

that very clever over here uh let's see did I miss  anybody else Elizabeth says a hug from Brazil and  

R says I'm happy to catch you live pardon me  if I if I skip anybody I'm just going back uh  

and making sure I get all of these over here  all right uh manolin says I'm standing on the  

window if you're standing on the window it would  mean you're you're kind of standing and unless  

you're out like that unless there's a window on  the floor or something that's how you would be  

standing on on a window all right uh let's see did  I skip anybody I love standing outside when it's  

raining without an umbrella yes so you could be  standing in the rain so Aman says she shouldn't  

stand on the table yes you probably don't want to  stand on the table or sit on the table as well uh  

let's see uh Kos says my teacher recommended that  I improve my enunciation what should I do I would  

do the same thing for pronunciation which is just  getting lots of examples of how natives speak the  

more examples you get the more confident you will  feel about speaking the the problem that most  

people do is they pick one person person like  one teacher or something and try to sound like  

that person when you really should be getting  lots of different examples because it's all of  

those different examples that make you feel more  comfortable that wow there there actually are a  

wide range of okay ways to do something so you  don't have to feel bad about about just trying to  

sound or speak in a particular way yes so sit in  the Sun or sit in the shade you could also stand  

in this in the shade same thing uh uh F says Hi  teacher I'm from Afghanistan my English is not  

good yesterday I read this sentence do you do your  homework during the day yes I do do the homework  

during the they why do do it a do you do uh do  you do yeah that's a whole long like other other  

question I don't want to deal with uh but and it  like when we're when we're asking a question about  

something like that and you get confused like why  do they say do twice it's better to replace that  

with a different example like do you go to school  so here we don't we don't like the brain now is  

not worried about two different examples but we  just understand like when we're this is the form  

of asking uh this kind of question so do you uh  play baseball after school all right that's how  

we ask that kind of question so when we're using  the word do twice it's because there's some other  

action that's also using the word do so do you  do your homework do you go swimming do you play  

basketball do you eat lunch okay so if you're ever  confused about that get a again a wide variety of  

examples and your brain won't be thinking like  why did they say do twice so again here in this  

example we're we're talking about two different  things uh so there's the do for just asking the  

question and then there's the do for whatever  the activity is so do you uh teach English do  

you sleep late do you whatever and again another  example you might uh you might also uh change that  

like uh did you do your homework yesterday so  we're talking about the past tense and instead  

of using the word do twice the first part of the  question is is making it clear about the past so  

did you and then the activity is do your homework  do you explain at this time do you explain at  

this time do you teach English work at a hospital  very clear way to go glad to hear it all right uh  

what does it mean to put something in a window  uh usually that just means like you hang up a  

picture or some kind of like a I don't know if  you imagine this is a window and I put some kind  

of colorful glass thing in a window that means  I'm I'm kind of putting it on top of the window  

like that putting it in a window I did a video  talking about prepositions and uh using an example  

like that about going through uh a window do you  explain at midnight yes that's another example so  

do you explain instead of do you do do you do all  right let's finish this up uh so we've got play  

in something what might be good for play in I'll  see if people can give an example of that to play

in what's something you  play in as I as I drink over

here any idea so you can be thinking about  all these so we've got play in we got work  

in and we've got work at stand on the train  or stand in the train you could actually say  

both of those it's not like one or the other you  could oh play in the rain play in the water all  

right let's use water another good example  so here's this is me at at a pool yay I'm  

playing in the water or playing in a pool or  something like that so I'm having fun within  

uh a particular environment like that okay so  you also notice like for this one I could be  

playing in a park as well or I could be playing  in a room uh or I could be uh playing in a pool  

so I could describe like using the word at would  be talking about the location and using the word  

in is kind of thinking about it like it's it's a  space like a like a physical space I'm inside so  

I could be playing inside the water I could be in  a pool and I could also be at a pool both of those  

would be correct just the slight nuances am I  describing the location like the name of the place  

where I am uh or am I talking about kind of being  physically inside something so yes you could be in  

a class as well same thing like right now I'm in a  physical room but you could also be in a class as  

well you could play in a house you could play at  a house both of those are fine so that's why you  

will hear natives sometimes say like oh my my son  or my daughter is playing in the park right now  

they are playing in the park or they are playing  at the park both of those are fine they describe  

essentially the same activity so some child doing  something uh in this particular location but uh  

the the main differences that are we talking  about what the name of the location is so where  

where they're physically doing it or we're just  describing them being inside some physical space  

yes you could play on look at that so right now  like here we have a physical thing and then a  

more kind of figurative thing like I'm playing  on my phone so I could be playing a video game  

on my phone or I could be playing it on the TV  or on my computer same idea I didn't want to you  

know I only want to put one of these pictures  in each of these but yes uh as you continue to  

fill this up now we can kind of fill this thing  vertically like making it even more uh interesting  

and helpful for you to remember this making the uh  the network here more powerful for you okay so I'm  

playing uh I'm playing on this park over here  but I'm also playing on my phone all right I'm  

going to work at home look at that work at home uh  so here is a person they're in their house let's  

see what does the house look like so we got them  let's see sitting on their uh their sofa I guess  

on their couch uh here is a like a computer so  they're doing some work look at that here's a  

TV over here uh they're watching something they  are doing work at home so you can say c couch or  

a sofa both of those words are fine but look at  that I'm doing work at home so it it is like what  

is the uh the physical thing you were doing now  another example because you will hear this a lot  

is like working at doing something means you're  you're trying to improve your ability or your your  

skill at some particular thing so if I'm working  at like I'm trying to learn how to box right now  

so I'm working at uh working at punching right now  so that means I'm working at that particular thing  

instead of thinking about it like a physical space  a location where I am it's a skill I'm trying to  

improve so I'm working at my English I'm working  at improving my English I'm working at you know  

like a specific skill in swimming like the uh like  the breast stroke or the front crawl or something  

like that uh say Cod what time is it now at your  country you would say in your country I'm in Japan  

right now and the time is 10:24 in the morning  yes you can also talk about working from home  

that would be another way to say that so you can  be working at home or you could be working from  

home both of those things are fine working on  high pressure I would need more information for  

that to work on high pressure like you might  work on a like high pressure uh equipment  

so in that like if I I don't know exactly what you  mean by that but like uh or or you just have like  

a lot of pressure like mental pressure at work uh  in that case typically we would like we would talk  

about working be working under under pressure yeah  Marco's got that Under Pressure because you think  

about like the water pressure it's it's kind of  mental uh physical it's similar idea of that but  

you feel Under Pressure yes so it'd be pressure on  you uh and you would feel under pressure so that  

you like you can describe both of those in that  same way very good unfortunately you didn't answer  

me what time is it now in your question no I did  answer you go back and look up uh or it's and Tom  

answered that as well may I say I work with high  pressure uh yeah you could you could say that you  

could say like I work like I work with uh I work  yeah but it it's it would be a bit more clear if  

you say I work under a lot of pressure like if  you just say I work I work with pressure it would  

sound more like there's some kind of equipment  like like pressure water pressure or air pressure  

or something like that that you're working  with like I work with I don't know pressure  

like pressure washers or something like some kind  of washing equipment like that all right last one  

work in what might you work in what might you work  in so I work four yes we didn't cover four in this  

example but uh kto says I work for a manufacturing  company based in Japan is it Monday already there  

yes it is Monday morning I believe what day is it  I don't know what day it is actually I guess it's  

I think it's Monday Monday morning yes oh Bob gave  another good example to be working on look at that  

so the same thing here just like I'm working  on a picture uh I'm working on a sculpture or  

working on building something you could work on uh  improving uh improving anything like that so I'm  

working on my English I'm working on my English  all right so if we're talking about like just  

to contrast this uh or these two right here like  if I'm working at we wouldn't say I'm working at  

my English you would say I'm working at improving  my vocabulary okay so the slight difference there  

if you're talking about working at something it's  usually some kind of action that you're trying to  

do all right but if you're just talking about the  the thing generally like I'm working on my English  

all right so if my boss says hey uh where is the  project I asked you to do I say hey just wait wait  

I'm working on it I'm working on it like I'm doing  that thing right now okay but if I'm talking about  

working at something like I'm working at getting  better uh at doing something so you wouldn't say  

I'm working at my English you would say I'm  working on my English because it's not a uh  

specific action okay so you could be working in a  company uh here we'll just do a let's see a kind  

of scientist looking person uh working in a in  a lab over here so they got some maybe chemical  

things or you know some other things like that  so this person is working in a lab like working  

in a lab they got a little lab coat right there so  working in a lab you could be working in an office  

all right so describing a like a physical room  or physical space where you work I like to work  

in my bathroom okay like I I work in my shower  you I I sit and do work in my shower I work in  

a 10-story building yeah you could work in a  10-story building as well uh by the way your  

method of teaching English is fantastic well I'm  glad to hear it if you know other people who would  

enjoy this click the like button so YouTube knows  to tell more people and just share it say hey come  

watch this guy and learn some English the native  way all right working in the shower Yes actually  

I remember a there was an episode of the show  Seinfeld uh where a uh Kramer so he was he he  

really enjoyed being in the shower so he started  cooking in the shower and and doing everything in  

the shower and so he made food for people in the  shower and they didn't they were really worried  

about it so this is supposed to be it's like kind  of scientist person working in a lab over here  

like a science lab so working in a classroom  working in a uh any kind of space like that  

so right now I am I am in I am teaching in uh and  uh like just a meeting room I'm in a meeting room  

right now but look at that we got all 16 of them  finished plus you have a bunch of extra ones uh  

that you could think of probably all right but  hopefully uh who who feels more confident now  

about these words than they did before watching  this video who feels more confident now does  

anyone hopefully you do yes you could also work  in a particular industry so we could use it more  

figuratively in that way like I work in education  or I work in astronomy or I work in gardening or  

something like that y another good example  excellent to work in all right uh H have I  

visited the Middle East uh where have I been I've  only been to Kuwait but it was just the Kuwait  

airport I think so I didn't I I don't know if that  counts uh if that uh if that means I was in the  

Middle East or not I guess no uh but I would like  to go I think it would uh I think it would be nice  

uh be an interesting place to go I've also not  been to Africa I think that would be cool too to

you know somewhere the United Arab Emirates or  Saudi Arabia somewhere uh by way of your teaching  

I got a lot of ideas you're excellent from the  Philippines glad to hear uh does any of these  

combinations work as phrasal verbs well yes I mean  these are like when when people think about what a  

phrasal verb is don't don't try to think like it's  a specific set of words it's more like an idea of  

combining a verb and a preposition so that we can  we can talk about what you're doing and then where  

you do it or how you do it something like that  so that that's the main idea so all of these are  

basically phrasal verbs all right so I can play on  a particular thing but I can also just it's really  

just describing what I'm doing so don't worry  about whether it is like technically a phrasal  

verb or not the important point is can you take a  verb and then combine it with something else and  

then and then see how uh how like that kind of  connection would be made so you understand play  

better by seeing all the different ways that we  might play uh connected with other verbs or other  

prepositions as well okay so it's the connections  the network the naturally varied review that helps  

you understand the language better rather than  just taking one thing and getting a translation  

or a definition of it okay so this is how you  understand the language like a native this is  

the same way uh that people are understanding like  young children are learning the language but I'm  

I'm I'm making it very structured and teaching  it to you faster than natives would do it so a  

native child might hear this example from their  family uh and then hear this example at school  

and this example someplace else but if you get  them all at the same time you can learn it a lot  

faster and understand and build that Network  much more quickly uh let's see thank you drew  

this was helpful glad to hear it Alexandro  says teacher how can I understand who speak  

quickly uh in that case you just need examples  of people maybe the same speech but listening to  

someone speak more slowly and then listening to  that same speech uh by a faster speaker so this  

is one of the things we do in fluent for life this  is a different kind of naturally varied review so  

here I'm I'm using different combinations of words  that's one kind of review this naturally varied  

review another kind is where you hear the same  speech but different people are saying it so you  

hear the same word words but by different speakers  uh or hearing them somebody speaking faster or  

more slower or they have a different dialect  accent that kind of thing uh so as you get more  

combinations that fills in this there there's  basically this network in your mind all these  

spaces are available you just need to fill them in  and the faster you fill them in the faster you get  

fluent so if you can understand like I could make  another one of these charts that's like different  

speed levels for something so you hear something  you can understand the slower version of it but  

maybe you can't understand the faster version so  you just need to understand maybe two or three  

uh like Steps between that and that will make it  easier for you to understand but if you just go  

directly to the faster speech that will probably  be more difficult all right so usually uh like  

even me when I hear things in Japanese some things  it's either too quick or someone is mumbling  

they're not speaking very clearly so it's hard  to understand but if I know what they're saying  

then I can listen to it again and it becomes more  clear all right let's see here did I miss anything  

else please come to Nigeria all right well you if  who who wants to pay for my trip you know I did  

that for a uh like I did a couple of a couple of  those if you if you go back and look at my YouTube  

channel like a few years ago I did some some  trips where I went and personally helped people  

with their English so I did one actually was in  Japan the first one I did was in Japan second one  

I did was in uh where did I go Vietnam so that  was a fun trip too uh but I got to work kind of  

personally uh with people and it it was like a fun  a fun trip where I get to tour around but also got  

to help people uh personally uh let's coach I  am looking for vocabulary courses and speaking  

courses uh well if you're looking for fluency  uh and that's just being able to communicate  

with people no matter who you're speaking with  um that's what we do in fluent for life so the  

point of fluent for life is basically to give  you this kind of review where you're hearing  

native speakers but you're also hearing more kind  of easy to understand explanations of things that  

really help you understand the language and as we  remove any doubt you have that's when you start  

speaking so you don't need like a speaking course  you just need a course that's going to help you  

eliminate the doubts you have that stop you from  speaking so right now like you could probably just  

speak by yourself or you could speak with other  people but you don't because either you don't  

have someone to speak with or you're shy or you're  nervous about whatever uh particular pronunciation  

or grammar or vocabulary questions you might have  so if you can solve those things if you get those  

questions answered then you speak all right so  that this uh this new book I'm working on I'll  

be releasing that very soon uh that's also talking  about this same idea of getting fluent first and  

then speaking so rather than trying to speak speak  a lot of people think they need to speak first to  

develop fluency but really fluency fluency happens  just like I'm demonstrating here as you understand  

things better as you remove doubt you naturally  become more confident about speaking and so that's  

how fluency develops so even if uh you're not  saying anything right now just by watching this  

video and getting all these different examples  in a structured way you're actually feeling more  

confident and that should make you want to speak  more all right so you don't need a speaking course  

you need a doubt elimination course that's  really the basic idea of what we do uh so if

question I think it was working at working on  yeah working where did I go oh I think it was  

this next one here it's covered up yeah working in  my computer working on so right now I'm working on  

my computer I'm like physically doing something  on the computer itself so I can also I can talk  

about me uh physically being on top of it like my  hands are on the computer or I'm just using it as  

a tool so I'm working on it just like I might say  I'm working with my computer right now so both of  

those are fine but typically when we're we're  talking about doing some work like I'm typing  

something I'm working on the computer now if I'm  in working in my computer this would mean I'm like  

somehow inside the computer this would be working  in my computer like maybe I'm like inside the  

computer trying to fix something like that that  would be working in a computer so working on the  

computer working in the computer right now you are  probably not working in your computer unless you  

have a very giant computer or you are very tiny I  guess but this is how you understand it so again  

see like the point is not to try to memorize the  vocabulary it's to contrast different examples to  

help you build that Network and really understand  things the same way natives do all right

we fill in this whole chart remember the point is  not to use translations if you want to become a  

confidence speaker if you want to speak you need  to be able to think in English and understand  

how how things are connected in that way you can  easily speak continuously like the way I'm able  

to speak here for how long we've been going like  over an hour I'm able to continue talking because  

I always have something to say I have all these  Connections in my head that allow me to continue  

speaking all right so if you would like to do that  too you want to express yourself fluently without  

translating without uh thinking about things or  hesitating this is how it works all right so it  

takes a little bit of time to build your network  but once you do you have that Network for life  

it will uh you will remember all these things and  and it will continue to grow stronger as you give  

it more examples this is the way your brain wants  to learn so help your brain learn this way rather  

than trying to force yourself to memorize things  or uh learn translations that aren't really going
