How To Say Exactly What You Want In Fluent English

uh and in this video we're going to talk about how  to say exactly what you want influently in English

all right sorry about the look like the  previous video was not live but here we go

okay I think we're doing all right let me  know if chat is working just post a comment  

let me know where you are or if you have any  questions feel free this video is because in  

my previous live stream someone was asking me  about how they can say precisely what they want  

to say so often people will have maybe a more  General thing they want to say or they can't  

really communicate specifically what they  would like to say and so I'd like to show  

you how to do that in this video it's actually  a pretty simple process really this is about  

understanding different language patterns like  a native so that you can start using these as  

well all right but the first basic idea uh  the reason I wanted to do this again there  

was that comment in that video and I know a lot of  people are interested in how to communicate again  

specifically good morning okay Chad is working  nice to see that uh so this should be a pretty  

interesting video hopefully if you would like to  communicate more accurately uh precisely exactly  

what you want to say this will be a good video  for you uh the the most basic thing as I just  

mentioned is we're talking about language  patterns so I want to show you how to use  

some of these we'll review some of these in the  video but the most important foundational thing  

is that you can never be perfectly precise about  your language because there's always something  

more to say as an example let's say I just want to  describe this marker right here I could say this  

is a black marker all right now there's nothing  really about that so I could just say this is  

this is a black marker so this is a black marker  there's nothing amazing or interesting about  

that and again I can even practice just using  something like this very simple description but  

I could get even more specific about that so I  could talk about this is a black marker that I  

got yesterday or this is the black markers if  I change this sentence slightly so this is the  

so now we're changing it from like a black  marker to the black marker that I got yesterday

so this is this is the black marker that I got  yesterday this is the black marker that I got  

yesterday all right but even then even with this  sentence it's still not perfectly specific I could  

be even more like this is the black marker that  I got yesterday from my friend this is the black  

marker that I got yesterday from the store or  this is the black marker that I got yesterday  

for whatever all right so this is the black marker  that I got yesterday for this class for this video  

okay so I the the reason I'm bringing this up the  reason I'm explaining this at the beginning of the  

video is because most people really worry about  they want to say exactly what they what they want  

but you never you never can really get exactly  what you want even even as a native speaker but  

what you can do is learn to be more precise and  then you can feel more confident about that all  

right so this is not it's not like a trick that  you you really can't actually say anything precise  

the point here is that you don't need to worry  about that all right so there's nothing wrong  

with saying this is a black shirt this is a black  shirt all right so this is a black shirt this is a  

uh this is a black marker or this is a blue marker  all right so that's perfectly fine and you should  

get good at saying these things even simple things  like this in English I know a lot of Learners they  

want to say something much more complicated before  they can even say simple things all right so the  

reason I'm bringing this up at the beginning  is because you shouldn't worry about trying  

to be perfectly precise because there is no level  even as a native speaker I could always say more  

I could always describe something and it would  still never be perfect all right so you don't  

need to worry about that is everybody clear about  that idea the reason again I'm bringing this up  

I'm repeating myself because I want you to relax  so first of all it's okay just to be communicating  

something it doesn't have to be perfectly precise  so we begin if we want to communicate and we want  

to become good and say exactly what we want  to say we first have to get good at being a  

bit more broad about something and then we start  adding more language patterns and that's how we  

get more specific okay I let a few more people  file in this is a good phrasal verb for people  

if you think about having rows of chairs and  people have to move in this is called filing  

in so people getting in line and coming in and  sitting down so even in a video like this where  

people are not sitting in an actual classroom  I can talk about people filing in so I can wait  

a bit more for people to file in I will check  on the chat see how chat is doing but I really  

wanted to start the video with that hopefully  everybody is enjoying their day Marcelo let's

P.M well this is uh where I live in Japan and  because I have Learners all over the world it  

is impossible for me to to do videos at some time  when everyone would be able to watch them but the

most of the things people ask me are things I talk  about but I thought this in particular was a good  

topic because I know a lot of people want to um  basically there's kind of like two problems the  

first problem uh is that they're not communicating  as well as they like like they usually just say  

the same simple things again and again so this  video is is trying to help you with that and  

trying to make more interesting more detailed  more precise sentences and the other thing is  

people really worry about just they have a lot of  worries in their mind when they're communicating  

like am I saying the right thing am I expressing  the right grammar Point uh that that kind of thing  

um so let's see here let's see just check on  chat as we go through these there let's see

of Japan but very few Japanese people watch me  it's pretty funny uh so it'd be nice to get more  

Japanese people watching uh but you know it's okay  but the other issue is I would not want to teach  

Japanese people in Japanese because that wouldn't  help them speak the whole point is to to learn the  

language in English all right so if you want to  speak you should learn it in English how you learn  

is how you speak uh but yes I could and I've done  uh like presentations like this in Japanese before

there all right so how do you deal with synonyms  and so how do you add color to your language like  

using other adjectives verbs or simply just  adverbs to further describe we can talk about  

that Kent good question in this video so I'm going  to give you some examples we can we can get into  

more uh specific things if you'd like but just  let me know in the comments as we go through this

I think I could spend like six months uh in the  US and Canada I'll achieve fluency for sure yes  

the fluency has certainly helped if you can be  immersed but that's not uh it's not the cure-all  

that people think it is I know people who have  lived in Japan longer than me so like 40 years  

in Japan and they still can't speak so again it's  not about where you live it's how you learn and  

even if you're surrounded by a Japanese if you  don't get simple understandable messages you're  

not going to learn the language and it doesn't  matter what language is you're learning all right

yes uh good morning from Japan let's see  nice to see more people mean no [ __ ] today

so I want more more Japanese people to enjoy  this because I know a lot of Japanese people  

would like to speak English and a lot of them  ask me questions about them especially parents  

with their kids and they say oh can you help me  help me with my kids and uh so we have Frederick  

for that I created that whole program so people  can give that to their kids and lots of Japanese  

people actually are starting to use that which  is great but I don't have that many Japanese  

people watching the YouTube channel anyway  uh this video is not about that but I want  

to talk about how to be more precise with your  language all right so again as I mentioned at  

the beginning of this video the basic idea  is that you can never be perfectly precise  

maybe you've heard of this uh there is a an  idea called the xenos paradox zenos paradox  

and that is the idea that you could like fire  an arrow I could shoot an arrow from one from  

one location to over here and I could make  it make it go like half of the way each time  

and it would still never approach it would still  never hit the target if I have the hair the arrow  

move half the distance each time infinitely so  it's infinitely moving closer and closer but it  

never hits the target all right so this is the  same idea of I could continue to explain more  

and more and more and more about something but  it would never be perfect all right so you don't  

have to worry about trying to explain exactly  what you want to say the goal really is to begin  

because I have my little triangle here we begin  with something broad that you can say and then as  

we start adding more language patterns we start  making things a bit more complex that's when you  

start speaking and you express yourself in further  detail all right but the reason I bring this  

up is so you don't worry if you can't pronounce  something or I'm not pronounced but if you can't  

express something exactly because it's really  impossible to do that so you can get very good at  

doing that but even me as a native speaker I could  talk about this shirt but maybe I don't talk about  

where it was from or who made the shirt or why I  bought it or whatever so there are lots of extra  

pieces of information I could put in to describe  something but nobody cares all right so you can  

relax not worry about trying to be perfect so  let's talk about some of these language patterns  

so the first one I want to talk about and again  the goal for you to become more confident about  

using things is to work up from something broad so  we want to just be be very broad about something  

so again I could say like this is a cat this is  a cat and I know this is a very simple sentence  

and maybe you can use this you can understand what  I'm saying right now but you should not try to be  

more specific until you can feel very confident  using this and when I say feel confident I mean  

understand it like a native like you know for  sure like yes I'm talking about this thing I'm  

describing this animal this is a cat this is  a cat again this is very simple I know people  

might say drew I know that information already  I already know this is a cat well we want to  

we want to figure out where exactly you get  stuck in the in like the level of specificity  

specificity let me write this word out and write  write this word down for you s-p-e-c-i-f-i-c-i-t-y

specificity specificity so when you're trying to  think by yourself about where you get stuck this  

is how we can do it okay so do I get stuck at the  most basic sentences so maybe you can understand  

what I'm saying but you have trouble using this it  just means okay if we have trouble with this where  

is the trouble like this word or that word maybe  you don't know what something means all right so  

especially if you are learning by yourself it's  very important for you to think about where do  

you get stuck because if you get stuck it means  you don't yet know that language like a native  

you don't yet understand that thing really well  okay hopefully this is making sense so I I know  

it might seem I have a wide range of people who  watch my videos some people are really at a high  

level but they still don't communicate fluently  other people maybe know less so even this this  

sentence might be a little bit tricky for people  alright so I'm still trying to speak clearly make  

sure people can understand what I'm saying but I  want to make sure you by yourself can look at your  

own language and be in in situations because you  know the kinds of things that you learn all right  

so let's say if I'm learning Japanese there might  be a specific word or phrase or like a pattern a  

language pattern of like I have to do something  all right so in Japanese I might say like

and I get really good at using that pattern  and then so I can start saying something like  

I have to okay and then whatever that is this is  a language pattern that you learn so rather than  

thinking about like a specific grammar point  or something what I'd like you to do is think  

more about what is the situation so this is how  natives are learning when my kids are learning  

both English and Japanese this is how they're  learning the language this is how you learned  

your native language as well so without studying  grammar rules we don't have to think about like  

what is the grammar here we're just thinking  about what's the situation okay so I look at  

people my mom is very very busy she has to go do  something oh I have to go to the store I have to  

go do this okay so I have to I have to I'm just  beginning with uh this is just an example of a  

language pattern especially something that uh  like little kids would learn all right so the  

basic things like I have to do something I want  to do something and this is how you build up the  

specificity over time so we begin with something  Broad and we want to make sure you can use this  

before trying to add more all right so one of  the biggest mistakes that English Learners make  

is they want to begin with something Broad and  so they begin like I might think in Japanese if  

I'm a native Japanese speaker and start like like  thinking about okay uh like what do I want to say  

and I have like a complicated sentence in my mind  that I want to use all right and then I translate  

that sentence in my head in English and I get  very confused all right so as an example let's  

say I'm trying to do this in in English and I want  to say something in a different language alright  

so my sentence I'm thinking of yesterday I went  to the store and bought this uh this really weird  

squirt gun that shoots ink at people all right  so that's the whole thing yesterday I went to  

the store and bought a really weird squirt gun  so like a little like a water pistol a squirt  

gun that shoots ink at people yesterday I went  to the store and bought a really weird squirt  

gun that shoots ink at people I might not be  repeating myself exactly but the point is I'm  

starting with a longer sentence so if I'm trying  to if I think about that sentence first in my  

native language so I'm a native English speaker  I'm thinking first in English and then I want to  

try to say that in Japanese I might wow that might  be a difficult sentence to make like how would I  

say that I'm trying to think okay like I'm trying  to express all these things like it's much easier  

for me to begin by saying like yesterday I got  a squirt gun all right so we begin with what I  

know I can do in Japanese all right and this is  just an example like I might say like kinomize  

like yesterday I got a squirt gun all right  so yesterday I got a squirt gun so again we  

begin with something that we know we can say  in that language in your case you're trying to  

learn English so we begin with a general broad  thing that we know we can say and it's still  

specific it's still exact it's just we could we  could always again add more information but the  

point is for you to be confident first about that  particular grammar construction or whatever the  

vocabulary is is this making sense all right  I know I'm talking a lot I'm excited to get  

this out there because I know a lot of people are  excited about this idea they want to do this but  

remember what we don't want to do so we don't want  to First think of a long complicated thing in our  

native language and then try to translate that  in our head and then speak that's where you're  

going to struggle what you want to do is really  improve your understanding of English in English  

so that way you can use that without having any  questions or trouble or anything like that okay so  

if I begin yesterday I saw or yesterday I bought a  really weird squirt gun at a store that shoots ink  

okay so I don't begin with that I begin with  something like yesterday I got a squirt gun  

all right and that's that's perfectly fantastic  English I'm being specific and then I might even  

make more sentences about that like the squirt  gun is really weird squirt gun is really weird  

and if I'm having a conversation with someone  they might say oh why like I'm trying to get a  

conversation going yesterday I bought a squirt gun  but the squirt gun is really weird or yesterday I  

bought a squirt gun and the squirt gun is really  weird now remember that there are different ways  

of expressing yourself but the point is we want  to begin with something a language pattern that  

we know and can understand and can use confidently  before we start practicing with other things all  

right so as you get comfortable with each of these  things we'll go through them we'll go through a  

couple of examples but this is how you will feel  much more confident about expressing yourself  

all right so remember number one the most  foundational thing is that you should be  

learning it all in English understanding the  language pattern in English and that way you can  

tell exactly what you are struggling with because  most times you will feel confident about something  

and you will use that but then if you try to  use something different maybe you don't quite  

understand the grammar you're still translating or  something that means that's the thing you need to  

focus on all right so as we get like we're adding  more and more words to our sentence we're trying  

to make that thing much more broad or much more  specific I should say but we're using more words  

all right so hopefully this makes sense this is a  cat so let's go over uh just some some very simple  

basic grammar constructions but I don't want you  to think about it like grammar we're not going to  

talk about it like language Learners we're going  to talk about it like natives okay the same way  

I would teach these things to my own kids so I'm  giving them lots of examples we're going to begin  

with that and which let me let's write this up  here put this in blue so we'll start with that  

and which now that is a little bit easier and  we can actually remove this from sentences as  

I'll show you right now so this is a cat this  is a cat now I want to add more information I  

want to be more specific about what I'm  explaining this is a cat that likes milk

all right so I'm still talking about the same  cat there's there's really logically there's  

nothing more specific about this because I I  could get infinitely more specific and still  

never be perfect so so don't feel bad if you if  you're not expressing exactly what you want to  

say uh like right now it's okay what I want you  to do is feel good about being able to express  

just this and then we can move deeper into  being more specific all right so this is a  

cat that likes milk and this is just one way to  say this I could say this cat likes milk that's  

fine too this cat likes milk but if I want to  introduce something this is a cat that likes milk  

and then I'm just practicing this like if I know  how to say this and I'm practicing adding more  

into these things like this is one idea this is  another idea and I'm learning to connect these  

like a native so this is a cat that likes milk  this is a cat that likes milk all right so this  

is a cat that likes milk or if I want to say which  is a little bit more complicated because which is  

what we add when we want to put some kind of extra  information in there so this is a cat like which  

which likes milk milk comma so this is one idea  in here which we do not need to add all right  

that's why we're using which here it's a witch  pardon me which likes milk that I got yesterday

so I could I could not even put in this middle  claws so this this little little section right  

here so I'm talking about the cat likes milk but  I could just say this is a cat so I begin if I'm  

talking with someone and I feel confident  using this this is the only thing I need to  

use this uh I can I can continue using this same  construction and like just continue talking more  

about the cat if that's all I feel comfortable  with so that's fine as an example this is a cat  

this is my cat this is my cat all right  so basically the same idea this is this  

so this is my cat this is the cat I got  yesterday so I can begin with this is a  

cat that I got yesterday or I could say  even more specifically this is the cat  

I got yesterday this is the cat I got yesterday  and typically this is if we're if we already  

introduced it somewhere so maybe you and I were  talking on the phone I say hey I bought a cat  

and then you come to my house and I say  look this is the cat that I got yesterday  

okay this is the cat that I got yesterday now I  can add more information here to describe the cat  

more but I don't have to do that it's just if I  feel confident and comfortable about putting this  

extra information in there but it's not necessary  all right does this make sense so we can continue  

to make something more and more specific by adding  more and more information but there's no point  

where we really get to like perfect explanation  because there's always more to explain all right  

so don't feel bad if you can't if there's like a  a specific idea you want to express but you can't  

the point is you can still Express something feel  confident about that and then as you understand  

more things you will become more confident about  those as well all right so in this case this  

is a cat this is the cat that I got yesterday I  cannot use the word that I don't have to say that  

it's just as fine uh to say it that way natives  will not use that also this is the cat I got  

yesterday this is the cat I got yesterday so we  want you to feel very comfortable about about  

introducing something and just describing a  little bit more about that but if you feel  

even uh even more confident you can put something  else in there so this is the cat which likes milk  

that I got yesterday it just depends on what  you want to express but don't feel bad if you  

can't say some like exact thing you you have in  your mind all right the point is we want to feel  

confident about each of these because remember  you get fluent word by word as we go through these  

different things so you learn a language pattern  like oh I have to go I have to do something  

and as you feel more confident  that's when have to becomes have to

we wouldn't right have to I mean you could  write have to if you want to but in in general  

conversations when we're teaching children I  have to do something I have to do something  

but children as they're using the language  more they become very confident they know  

what they're talking about and they just say  have to I have to go I have to go I have to  

go I have to go even just sounds like without  the H on there I have to go uh I have to go

all right so when you hear these different  things uh inside like in a conversation from  

natives you will get that and then you will feel  like a lot more a lot more confident about that  

all right so I have to go I have  to go I have to go I have to go  

all right any questions about that I'm going  to cover a few more of these but I really just  

wanted to start with something simple so you can  figure out for yourself where do you get stuck  

because this is when you know oh yeah I don't I  don't really feel comfortable saying that I have  

to do something like I don't I don't yet feel  confident about them so that means you should  

focus more on that particular pattern all right  don't think about it like a grammar Point think  

about it like a language pattern the same way  natives do so natives are not like well what  

is this is this like a past perfect or the  present progressive or whatever they're not  

thinking about that at all they're just thinking  about what's the idea what's the situation and  

then what words do I use in that situation so this  is the cat which likes milk that I got yesterday  

typically if we use witch this is a cat or this  is the cat which likes milk then we would we  

would say that just because we have witch if  we have witch and that in the sentence it's it  

makes it a bit more clear that we're talking about  okay this is some extra information that doesn't  

need to be there but you often hear these kind of  confused in situations so like this is the this is  

the cat uh which I got yesterday you might hear  that it's grammatically incorrect but you will  

hear that from people sometimes and that's okay  natives will use grammatically incorrect English  

all right so this is the cat which likes milk  that I got yesterday any questions about that  

we just want to go through something very  simple make sure everybody can use that  

all right let me see it looks like I had a whole  bunch all right now this is going to be now we're  

getting we're getting more people in the comments  so I'm going to have to it's going to be tricky  

going back through all of these but let's see  here uh I need help uttering my ideas I have a  

lot but it's hard to put them out there I don't  know why this is a wizard guy yes part of that  

is I mean really the the most basic foundational  issue is that you just don't know English like a  

native so if you understand the language like a  native you will speak like a native and you it's  

really hard to get there by trying to translate  things in your native language so especially  

people that like maybe they have uh like more  intelligent people maybe they go to college and  

they have difficult things complex things they  want to say they get very frustrated because  

they can't express that in you know in another  language but I'm saying you shouldn't feel like  

that it's okay to to just explain something simply  if that's all you can use it's okay so I can say  

this is a cat I bought this cat yesterday I can  use two sentences and explain the same thing all  

right there are more than one way uh to explain  explain something or Express something so this  

is the cat which likes milk that I got yesterday  so I could say that or I could say this is a cat  

this cat likes milk I got this cat yesterday okay  so if you feel confident you feel comfortable with  

this and that's and that's the only like sentence  structure you can do then use that it's okay  

it just takes maybe two or three sentences to  explain one thing but then we know okay how do  

I how do I add a bit more information so we can  give you a few more examples of that like this is  

this is the marker that is running out of  ink so maybe this this marker is okay but  

this marker is running out of ink so if I'm  telling someone hey this is a marker I'm just  

introducing it but if I want to explain oh this  is the marker that is running out of ink all  

right so this will help you sound much more  native if you just want to explain a little  

bit more with the word that all right or you  don't even have to use the word that this is  

the marker this is the marker running out of ink  or this is the marker that is running out of ink  

okay any questions about that does everybody  understand I really want to make it very clear  

uh that the point is to you you become fluent  in these language patterns and you will notice  

this about your own speech you will think okay  I'm good at saying this but I'm not yet good at  

saying this other thing all right so continue  to use what you're good at but really instead  

of trying to maybe practice it you really just  want to understand that thing which comes from  

getting naturally varied reviews so lots of  examples of a particular thing that's why we  

just cover like I'm making this clear about  these different things I've got them circled  

so you can see them as a like a specific language  pattern but that's how you learn it all right so  

don't think about grammar think about language  patterns what do you want to what do you want  

to express so I have to do something or in  this case I'm just adding more information  

all right so this is the video this is the video  where in the same way this is the video where I  

could talk about something this is the video where  I could introduce more information all right or  

this is the time when I could do something all  right so this is a video very simple this is a  

video I feel confident saying that this is a video  yes very simple this is a video that I like making  

so I can add a little bit more information  there this is a video that I like making  

or this is a video that I don't want to go too  long all right so the the goal the goal is output  

but you get there from the input all right so  you don't have to go and try to practice like a  

lot of things it's just what what is the simplest  easiest or even like the most complex thing that  

you can say all in English without thinking about  it that's how you measure your fluency because  

you measure it by language patterns individually  you don't get fluent in English you get fluent  

in individual language patterns this is why you  can say this but not something else so you can  

be fluent in this one but maybe not fluent  in adding more information but if you if you  

know that the point is to know where you are for  your own English and each person has their own  

particular things that they're that they're trying  to improve uh but that's how you would get there  

so it's not about not about trying to speak more  you want to get more input more examples of the  

of the particular thing you're looking at and as  you get more examples of that you will feel more  

confident and then you will speak all right so  you can still you're this is still specific this  

is a cat this is a marker that is a tree that's  still specific but I could give more information  

if I feel confident about doing that okay all  right I think we're I think people are getting it  

let's find out all right right I need to speak  English sometimes no matter how poor it is uh  

if I don't output my speaking will not improve  all right so I really want again just to make  

that clear that you you become more fluent as you  understand the language better it's not about you  

trying to speak more but you should feel confident  expressing at whatever level of specificity you  

can all right so if you can only say a simple  thing like this equals that or this is that  

this is my hand this is my hand okay if you  feel confident only saying that then those  

those are the sentences you should be using  and then you start getting more used to other  

language patterns so you can make your sentences  longer so just like adding that or which in this  

example so this is a cat that I got yesterday  over this is the cat that I got yesterday

all right uh uh let's see

talking about so if I if I if I just say like if  I just say this is the marker if I introduce that  

we don't introduce with the because you don't know  what I'm talking about but you should watch I made  

a video recently about the word the and it's  different uses if you're curious to learn more

again you you will feel more confident  about making these different things and we  

can reorder these so I can say this is the  cat that I got yesterday which likes milk  

very good so which is just where we're trying to  add some additional information so I could cover  

this up this is the cat I got yesterday yeah this  is the cat I got yesterday this is the cat witch  

which I'm which I don't like very much that I got  yesterday but there are different ways I could put  

these each in their own sentence and and I'm still  communicating I'm just using a simple expression  

or a simple like a simple language pattern this is  a cat this cat likes milk I got this cat yesterday  

okay so I'm still using a simple construction  and still being specific but it's just in three  

different sentences so don't feel bad about  that don't feel nervous the the feeling bad  

usually comes from you're starting with a really  complicated idea in your native language and  

then you translate that and then it doesn't come  out the way you want it to you're making it too  

complex so you can't go it's like imagine imagine  you're trying to like cross from one one building  

to another all right so this is your we'll just  call this your native language and this is English  

so this is a building over here so you you start  with like oh here's this like really complex idea  

I want to say in my native language now I'm  going to try to walk across to English over  

here and translate that in my mind all right  and of course like you're feeling worried as  

you try to walk across this this little line how  do I translate this oh my goodness and like and  

they fall down and make a mistake and I I couldn't  express it the way I want to all right it's much  

easier to do this like we're going to cross on the  ground and go up that way does that make sense so  

rather than translating in your head so you don't  take a complex idea and try to translate it go to  

the next building we start down here okay what do  I want to say what can I say in English and then  

you just walk it's like whoop I just walk across  nice and easily oh this is a cat I can say that  

this is a cat and I move up in English this is a  cat the cat likes milk I got this cat yesterday  

so it's okay you can be specific even with a  simple construction all right even with a simple  

sentence this is a cat the cat likes milk I got  this cat yesterday nobody will feel bad about that  

you're still communicating well all right but  if you want to try to put them all in the same  

sentence and you want to say something complex you  have to feel good about each one of these pieces  

all right now forgive me because we do  have more comments uh if I'm skipping  

any of them I'm not I'm just trying to go  very quickly uh make sure I see all these  

things let's see can you say uh this way  you'd say this is a cat that likes milk  

which I got yesterday yes so this is a cat that  likes milk which I got yesterday you can say  

that all right that my problem I use a low  register when I'm speaking you mean you like  

you speak like with like like the the volume of  your voice is that what you mean usually usually  

people that if there's some kind of issue people  have the main reason for that is because they lack  

confidence in what they want to say they just  lack confidence like I don't I don't know how  

to make this construction so we don't begin with  something first don't start with a complicated  

idea in your native language begin with something  simple okay it's okay if you need to if you need  

to translate I don't recommend you do you should  be learning everything all in English but if you  

need to start with something simple go up  through the English like that just like this  

okay use the symbol constructions and as you  as you get used to these you will start using  

more difficult things or maybe you will learn an  idiom or you will learn some interesting phrase  

or cultural reference that you can put into that  so this is the cat I was telling you about this  

is the cat I was telling you about this is the cat  I was telling you about so I can begin something  

this is the cat I was and then we're explaining  something like yesterday I was I was talking to  

you on the phone and today I'm showing you the  cat look this is the cat I was telling you about  

this is the cat I mentioned yesterday this is  the cat I said I would buy so I could there are  

all kinds of like more complicated things  I could put in there but there are still  

different ways of doing this so you don't have  to feel bad about not using any particular one  

all right uh let's see Brittany there's something  called Google oh my goodness let's see wizard guy  

says uh I teach ESL students however yes I do have  struggles stating my ideas which I know are super  

great which I know are super great or in this case  you would say like that you know are super great  

all right so I know like unless you put like  the comma in there yes but you can you can say  

either one of those it just depends on if that's  important for that information or not uh let's see  

all right uh yes I Just Brittany Brittany just  review what what I was just talking about that is  

just important necessary information which is just  not important in this case in this case all right  

let me see if I have all right I struggle to  stop speaking when I'm not sure if my grammar  

has the correct collocation for instance yes and  so again you will feel confident using something  

and you know like what is like think about  what is the grammar construction or what is  

the situation where you don't feel confident maybe  you think like I don't know how to say I have to  

do something so I'm using it now it's kind of  weird to say that but let's say for example I  

don't know how to say I have to do something so  maybe that's like something you like you know how  

to say this in your native language but you don't  know how to say it in English then you should be  

looking for situations where natives are are using  that like oh no I have to go to the bathroom bye  

I have to go I have to go I have to eat I have to  play and as you get used to these examples ah you  

feel confident so now this is the cat I have  to wash this is the cat I have to wash every  

day this is the cat I have to wash okay so maybe  there's like the cat doesn't like me very much  

because I have to wash him but you can again you  can take something as you feel confident about  

each one of these pieces individually then you can  start to weave them together but don't try to put  

a like a really complicated sentence together in  your native language and then translate it into  

English you don't want to do that you're just  going to struggle just say something specific  

or use like three different sentences at this same  level it's okay to do that this is a cat this cat  

likes milk I got this cat yesterday or I got it  yesterday people understand what you're talking  

about you don't have to say the cat the cat the  cat this is a cat it likes milk I got it yesterday  

same thing this is a cat I got it yesterday it  likes milk okay very simple we're still using  

the same basic construction without having to  feel uh like oh no I can't express what I want  

to say all right everybody getting this I don't  want to make myself I feel like I'm being too  

too complicated but the basic idea is that you  get confident and fluent as you understand each  

thing individually don't try to think about this  as all like one thing it's really a few different  

pieces like building blocks or Legos or something  like that that you put them together so it's okay  

to use short simple sentences and maybe you use a  few of them that's okay all right all right let's  

see here uh so hopefully that makes sense okay  hello let's go to another great class all right  

uh oh let's see Lister or we can say the after  mentioned it before yes you could good morning  

from Indonesia this is a lesson where you can  learn native English correct so this is a lesson  

where you can do that or if I was the only person  like the only person this was the only place you  

could say this is uh like this is the lesson where  or this is the lesson where you can learn native  

English like it's not possible to learn anywhere  else all right so first we should know uh English  

patterns so first we should know English patterns  yes that's exactly what I'm saying so you learn  

these as you as you understand the situation in  English the point is not to translate from your  

language into English it's to understand something  so as an example if I'm teaching you Japanese

maca o Kudos

now just by giving you that quick lesson  in Japanese you're understanding or you're  

starting to understand the names of  colors and you also understand some  

grammar alright so in Japanese we have  the adjective before the noun I don't  

want to explain a lot of like a grammar  but to kids it's like oh like aoi maca so

same thing so you learn okay like in Spanish  you know the adjective comes after the noun  

but in English it comes before and so you  learn the patterns of these things and you  

understand them in English which helps you  use them fluently if you feel like you need  

to translate it means you're you're at like  your your level of communication is too high  

for what you're trying to say so go back to  something simple get really good at that and  

then just introduce one new thing all right  like one new thing this is a cat that I like  

this is a restaurant that I go to often this is  a uh like a location that I really enjoy okay so  

don't think about grammar think about patterns the  point is not to learn in your language and think  

about it's just it's like patterns of what happens  what do people say in this situation so I dropped  

something on my head ouch in English I say ouch  and that's why my kids they drop something on my  

like on my on their head or whatever and they  say ouch they're just copying what I'm saying  

because they're connecting the situation with  the grammar or the situation with the vocabulary

let's see uh okay so Kent says in case this  escapes your mind how do you deal with synonyms  

oh I call it to your language yeah so this is  how you do it so remember there are multiple  

ways uh to express a particular thing so I  could say like this is a crazy cat this is  

a funny cat this is a really lovely cat and I'm  just you can think about it like the again being  

more detailed more specific uh like more more  advanced or complex more detailed uh with your  

like with your exactitude so exactly what you  want to say so I can go into more detail this  

is a a beautiful yellow purple and white cat  and I could I could go into more detail this  

is a beautiful white purple and yellow cat with  lovely soft fur this is a beautiful yellow white  

and you know black cat with lovely fur that likes  to walk out and and go swimming and chase cats so  

I can continue to make it more and more specific  to add more information but it's only if I feel  

confident about those language patterns so we  want to begin with something simple that you can  

say that you don't have to translate in your head  and as you get good and you you really understand  

these things well then you can start sticking them  together all right now I want to give you some  

more examples before we uh before we do this but  make sure I just answer a less I want to become  

fluent for going to work in a calls uh in a call  center customer service yeah so you can just say I  

want to become fluent and this is actually the the  next thing I wanted to talk about which is four

so we've already covered that and which

let's just see what was that example I think it  was like I want to be we'll do something even more  

simple uh like this is we'll just use the same  same basic construction again so this is a marker

now how might we take this and make  it more complex by using the word  

four I'm losing losing I have a couple of  different markers over here how was this one  

that's a little better we need some new markers  we need some new markers so this is a marker and  

I can just again say that this is a marker but  for doing something else so this is a marker

four

so I erase this and I want to add more information  this is a marker for correcting papers so if  

I want to like have a maybe a red marker and a  blue marker and a black marker all right so this  

is a marker 4 correcting papers this is a marker  for work all right so what's the purpose of that  

again I'm not thinking about a grammar point I'm  thinking what's the language pattern like for the  

purposes of so what's the reason for this thing  all right so this is a marker 4 scratching my back  

this is a this is a good marker this is a good  marker for scratching my back so I can add more  

information this is a a good marker for scratching  my back this is a this is a really bad marker for  

cleaning my ears it's a bad marker for cleaning  my ears it's a bad marker for cleaning my ears  

okay so it's bad because it it can't get  in here and so now you start learning oh  

look at that like there's like bad for  or good for or right food over here good

so you see as I as I begin adding more  information but I feel confident using  

this all right this is a marker this is a marker  do you feel confident just saying that if you do  

start adding more information with some other  details this is a marker for doing something or  

this is a marker that is so I can still use  that again that is good for something else

that is a marker good for something else okay so  the point is not to not to memorize like the uh  

like a particular grammar point or even know the  name for that grammar point it's just what do you  

say like I'm talking about something is for for  some purpose what's the reason for that thing okay

so this is a marker four again cleaning my  ears maybe this is a maybe this is a good  

marker this is a good marker for cleaning  my ears maybe I need something thinner  

let's see uh like this is  a this is a pen all right

yes so someone just said there isn't  pattern all that a grammar yes it's  

exactly what I'm saying patterns is what you  should be learning and patterns are grammar  

that's what it is okay but the point is not to  think about what the grammar construction is it's  

more what do natives say in a particular situation  that's how you should be be thinking about grammar  

so we don't do it by thinking in your native  language and then trying to translate that into  

English what you think is what did natives say  when they're talking about some situation that's  

it so that's what a language pattern is so yes  every everything about language is grammar grammar  

just means what are the rules of the language but  you should not learn them by trying to study a  

whole bunch of rules and trying to memorize  and like okay here's every example of that  

so we learn something it's like when I'm  teaching my my own children like he likes

he likes pasta he likes this but then I point  to a girl and I say oh she likes something  

and so they learned all it's we  use a different word for that  

so he likes something if I'm talking about a  little boy and she likes something if I'm talking  

about a little girl now you might understand that  but can you use it fluently can you switch back  

and forth can I bring 10 people and it's like he  he he like that the point is to understand the  

language really well so you use it automatically  and then you can start combining these different  

things together in the same sentence okay  what does it mean a pattern so pattern

a pattern so pattern it just means  like if we let's say I have a diamond  

circle diamond Circle what do you  think the next one is going to be

it's a pattern you can guess  it's probably going to be  

another diamond you recognize the pattern in the  same way when we're in a conversation with people  

I have to go I have to go oh that person like  what they mean is like they cannot stay here  

like they must do something so I could say I must  go or I have to go but there are different ways of  

expressing that idea of like you must do something  right now I have to go I have to do something  

okay but if I feel confident first like the  first thing I do is understand what's happening  

I dropped something on my head I say ouch you  understand like ouch and not just me you see  

lots of people do that that's the pattern  so if I drop something on my head I say  

ouch someone else drops something on their head  they say out another person dropped something on  

their head oh like no surprise there right you  know what's going to happen that's the pattern  

so you should be looking for that in English  and everything you watch everything that you  

watch people do they're they're they're following  some kind of pattern and your mind is designed to  

understand those patterns and that's how we can  speak the problem is most people are just trying  

to they're trying to take something complicated  translate it from their language into English and  

that's when they get stuck when they should be  trying to just Master something very basic this  

is a marker and then you know where you get stuck  so I can't say four I don't know how to put these  

two sentences together all right so we want to  begin with just understanding these even with  

within this same basic structure all right  this is a marker and I could say this marker

is for correcting papers this marker is for  correcting papers so this is a marker this  

marker is for correcting papers or I could  say if we already know this is a marker  

so it it's for correcting papers so how can we  find these patterns first you find the situation  

okay so the pattern the pattern comes from the  situation it's anything what do you say when you  

order food what do you say when you need to go to  the toilet where's the bathroom so you ask people  

like when I'm looking for something what do I say  what are the words that people use like where is  

something so that that's that's the language that  people use and you will be amazed when you start  

thinking more like a native because you're  not you're you're kind of forgetting about  

your native language and thinking more about what  is the pattern in English what is that particular  

thing and you think oh a native says like where  I'm looking for something where are my keys  

where's my dog where did I put my remote control  for the TV so little kids are hearing that and  

they look like oh like I'm talking about a  place where is something where do you live  

where would you like to go on vacation so we  begin by not translating a word from English  

or from your native language into English You  Begin by understanding like oh the the place we're  

talking about like look where where is my hand  oh it's up here where and from simple individual  

words like this we start making longer things but  most of these are just it's just a pattern okay

all right let me go through and I might not get  to everybody oh my goodness all right let's see  

we got a lot of questions over here uh let's  see so that's what I want to learn using idioms  

phrasal verbs and cultural references yes so those  kinds of things are the things that you get as you  

get good at these patterns so often like people  will learn uh like they will watch a movie and  

they will take from that situation from the movie  like where where people say something like uh in  

any any I don't know like like a famous movie  let's see if there's a recent example uh so I  

give maybe like a die-hard example because Niels  was watching this I don't know if Niels is still  

watching uh but Die Hard example is like what  are some uh like so so he there's a there's a  

scene in there like a cowboy movie uh that that  like the main character is talking about he says  

like yippee-kai yippie Kaye and this is like a  cowboy just something a cowboy says and so like  

the bad guy this German guy is saying like what  like what what are you what do you Americans say  

like yippee Kaye or whatever and so he's he's  taking that that quote from something uh that's  

just a cultural reference yeah Nils is back all  right Nils is back okay so that that's the kind  

of thing like when you when you learn a cultural  reference it's like there's a like a particular  

thing you learn for a situation and so that's the  like reference you could use for that instead of  

something else so in in Japanese I'll just give  you a quick example like I could say I'm surprised  

like the the common way people say that like  when they're surprised by something it's like  

big goody so I'm I'm surprised by something but I  will make a joke I will say like big goody donkey  

which is the name of a restaurant it's like it's  just a silly thing to say but Japanese people find  

it funny you know so I just that's like a joke  that I made up all right but it's the same thing  

I'm taking like a cultural reference this is the  name of a restaurant so kids especially like they  

you know they will like find that funny okay so  when you're when you're looking at things like  

where do we where do we get all these patterns  like the patterns are everywhere everything  

people do is a pattern okay all right let's  see here all right I'm get I'm talking too much  

all right Miguel says hello from Argentina I  didn't know about patterns and thinking like this  

it is much easier yeah so again like think like  patterns and you will think more like a native one  

day I thought Western people's brains is different  from Asians uh well maybe we do who knows I don't  

know so this is the cat which I got yesterday  is incorrect yes you so it would be incorrect  

English you would hear that uh in conversations  anyway though some people use that or you can  

just say this is the cat I got yesterday  so you don't have to worry about which one  

all right could you create a video teaching  us common phrases spoken in call centers  

spoken in call centers well though that's the  kind of thing you could you should be getting  

those phrases from from the people uh at the call  center I bet they have recordings of those calls  

I would hear about those kinds of things I would  get that information from the call center I don't  

work in the call center so I don't know I can  imagine but you can probably get that from that  

same thing should I say that who I know he's tall  or that I know uh usually if we're talking about  

a person like he is the person who is tall he is  the person who is tall all right we talk about  

that when we're talking about things or people  and and rather than try to remember that it's  

better to just get lots of examples and then you  will see huh that's interesting when people are  

talking about people they say who this is the  person who does whatever so he does something  

all right but this is the this is like the  company that does something this is the dog  

that does something so we're talking about  people we use who or the time we say when  

all right uh do you go to the gym not do wait do  you go to the gym not do gym yes you would say  

do you go to the gym you don't like do a gym you  do exercise so a gym is a place but you could do  

gymnastics which is like the physical activity all  right dude Jim is acceptable no no it no it is not  

nobody nobody does the gym I mean you you could  you could say like yeah I'm like doing the gym  

today like in in that kind of expression but like  we wouldn't ask a person normally like do you do  

you GM nobody would nobody would say that to you  Jim but like do you like I do I do the gym on  

on Mondays so again you see how like the pattern  gets more specific so we might not say do you do  

do you do gym so no one says that but I might say  yeah I do the gym on Monday it just means I go to  

the gym all right like I do this kind of thing in  that way all right Eureka there is no such thing  

as do gym gym is a noun but again like yes so as  you get as you start thinking more like a native  

so a non-native speaker is like okay what do we do  for the word gym what a native speaker is doing is  

they're thinking huh maybe we do use Jim like and  then I'm looking for examples of that so yeah I do  

the gym on Monday like I do I do legs on Tuesday  so if I'm talking about training my legs like I do  

I do legs on Tuesday I do arms on Thursday that  kind of thing so as you get more specific with  

those things that's where you start recognizing  the patterns all right Fatima do you suggest any  

books for that again I would start with uh read  or watch the video I made about these these books  

get you fluent in English it's talking really  about children's books that give you language  

patterns and that you review these things again  and again most of the time popular children's  

books are just a language pattern again and again  with a slight change in it this is a flower this  

is a tree this is a vet thing and then we learned  that as a flower that is a treat and the point is  

to get really really confident because you know it  so well the more familiar you get with English in  

English the more confident you become all right  how can I apply what you are saying to a job  

interview for example the interviewer asks this  question what are your strengths and weaknesses  

okay so if I if I only feel confident uh good  question Julian so if I only feel confident about  

something simple so one strength is uh I listen  well so very simple it's like this is that one  

strength or I can even without just saying like a  good thing I can just say well I listen well and  

they understand like that is a strength so one  strength is I listen well or I could just say I  

listen well but and again I'm contrasting that  even within the same sentence or it could be a  

different sentence uh but I but I hate people so  I could I could say something you would probably  

not want to say that in a job interview but the  point is I can make like two simple sentences  

okay so I could become or could make them much  more complex by adding more information to that  

but like could I I could I could say I do this so  I am good at uh listening or I am a good listener  

but I'm always late so like if you talk about  strengths and weaknesses like a good a good  

way to to use that in a job interview is like  what's your weakness I say like I care too much  

so I want to help people too much I might  like spend more time with a customer than I  

should and so that that's where you we we call  that like positioning a weakness as a strength  

okay so that's a it's a slightly more  complicated thing uh but for uh like for  

job interviews or whatever you can say that  same kind of thing uh let's let's see okay  

teacher do you go do you do gym a lot yeah so  you would again you would say like do you do  

you go to the gym uh or not uh let's see how  do I okay what I went too far back I think  

um all right so Fatima is asking if I have a book  uh no I do not I actually have a like a whole  

course that will teach you all these patterns  uh it's called fluent for life and Frederick as  

well this is our app and both of these things  will help you learn English like a native you

how do you like it Oh you mean like like who  what where why and when plus how or whatever  

like the the question words yes I mean like the  like I don't I don't tell my children like what's  

the five who or five W rule or whatever but  they understand the pattern of that over time  

so if I ask them lots of questions like where  did you go who did you see why did you do that  

when did you go they're hearing these it's  like wow that's interesting a lot of those  

question words start with wh all right and  then we have how as well but like another  

one so very a very basic thing that I that  I'm teaching right now to my four-year-old

is if we're we're talking about examples  of something so again very simple thing  

that I'm practicing with my with my  younger daughter so like do you like  

whatever so do you like something so I could say  do you like bananas and then she just says yes or  

no and then I could ask again using this exact  same construction so this same pattern asking  

a question do you like bananas do you like pizza  do you like apples do you like whatever okay so  

I'm just getting her used to that even though she  she doesn't have to say the expression or whatever  

she understands what I'm talking about do you like  this do you like that now I switch it a little bit  

so I say do you like bananas and then how about

how about strawberries

how about the color blue how about whatever  

so this is this is like a now I'm connecting this  to this to make a like more of a conversation  

and I'm changing it slightly it's the same  basic idea do you like this well what about

what about that so she's learning these  different constructions they're all the  

same thing it's all the same thing now  in this like do you like is usually we  

like we begin a topic or begin something about  this particular thing so do you like computers  

well how about uh tablet computers or whatever  or how about laptop computers what about this  

what about that all right so rather than just  repeating this same thing I can do that I can say  

do you like this do you like that do you like this  do you like that but it sounds much more natural  

as we start adding a little bit of something  different in there but they mean the same thing  

all right so I'm talking about this what about  this additional thing so here's we start something  

additional something more something extra another  thing what about this how about that and this

very simple do you like pizza yes I do  no I don't how about tacos yes I do no  

I don't what about apples yes I do no I don't  and ice cream all right so people understand  

we're still talking it's like do you like do  you like do you like but I can express it in  

a slightly different way and as you learn these  things like a native I'm giving you a situation  

these are the patterns these are the language  patterns that natives use in this situation so  

we begin with the situation I'm asking do you  like something now I'm continuing to ask that  

do you like this do you like that do you like that  but I'm asking it in a slightly different way or

same thing all right it's just language patterns  all right all right here we go let's see if we  

had any more of those let's see so saying I do a  gym on Monday sounds very weird unless you have  

a sexual fetish for the gym yes you could read  it that way uh but again like it typically you  

wouldn't like I mean often people will go to  the gym like every day or five times a week or  

something but they do a particular thing like  today is leg day tomorrow is arm day today is  

back day or whatever all right uh could you tell  us about way of learning teaching English about  

your way you should watch uh Bellatrix uh the  the video I have about how to teach English as

I read uh book two Jasper John Dooley it's a kids  book yeah very good after watching movie I forget  

a lot of the new vocabulary is that even normal  yes so Dimitri is asking a very common question  

again the the reason most people forget things  is because they take something that's like a  

two-hour movie or a like a novel that might be  a few hundred pages and you will probably not  

go back and review that information again so you  have the knowledge of something if I if I repeated  

a phrase that you heard in that novel or movie  you would probably recognize it but you don't  

feel confident using that and that's what we're  talking about in this video which is like feeling  

confident about particular grammar structures okay  so you don't feel uh confident about something you  

don't get to review uh a lot a lot like enough  of that information and that's why it's much  

better to do short simple things that you can  review very quickly okay all right pretty easy  

all right let's see uh anyone else here all  right you could also be more specific in saying  

do you like whole bananas or sliced bananas do  you like sushi yeah very good one same thing  

so I can always again like there's there's  never a point where we reach perfect specificity

okay so we always we always want to want to just  relax and and express what we can and then as we  

express something we're also trying to improve and  add more constructions to our to our vocabulary  

okay so don't worry about uh like trying to say  one particular thing so what about how about what  

is the difference and where should we use what or  how so again I just gave examples of these what  

about and how about are the same thing it just  here's an additional example I'm asking about  

so do you like Japanese food now I'm going to get  more specific what about this specific Japanese  

food or I could say what about Thai food so I'm  now I'm talking about a different thing but I'm  

just asking for more information or I'm trying  to learn more about you but both of these mean  

exactly the same thing in this situation so in  this situation remember things are situational the  

vocabulary is situational like that so we don't  want to try to learn the word how by itself and  

then try to remember lots of different examples  of it it's just like for this situation we use how  

and then we might use it in a different way in  another situation but this is how kids are getting  

fluent so kids learn to talk like how do I ask  for a toy uh for like from another kid like can I  

play with that can I play with that or may I play  with that so they learn a construction for that  

they're learning the pattern for that situation  may I play with that or could I play with that  

okay makes sense all right let's see here  a couple things I think we'll do I'll think  

I'll do maybe like two more quickly we're  already already going a little bit longer

I have a question about where about you access  spoken where are you from I'm from Chicago in the  

United States but if I uh I'm I'm kind of speaking  a bit more clearly some people actually say I have  

a southern like almost a Southern accent maybe my  normal speaking voice is a little bit more relaxed  

all right thanks teacher says Cocina uh  difference between frowned on and frowned upon uh  

uh they really mean the same thing you you and  this is if you have a particular question about  

grammar that you don't know and you have a like  don't have a teacher there um but the let's see  

but you have trouble uh like knowing which one  is the correct one I would just do like Google  

both of those and see which one gives you more  examples so if you say like frowned on something  

which people don't typically use you might  get 10 000 examples but if you say frowned  

upon you might get a million examples so you  would know Ah that's that's the one I should  

be using that's how natives will be checking that  all right all right let me do some uh quick more  

and then we'll finish this up  we're already past one hour

another very simple language pattern if we're  talking about a reason why so we mentioned four uh  

so like this is a marker I will use that we'll use  something different this is uh uh let's see we'll  

just say this is a pen everyone knows this is a  pen this is a pen this is a pen all right this is  

a pen uh actually now let's do something different  maybe you guys want to do something different

so if I'm in a in a conversation with someone  and I'm like oh no I have all these markers but I  

can't I can't like write with any of them because  they're all out of ink so water water everywhere  

like I'm out in a boat in the ocean but I can't  drink any of it because it's salt water all right  

similar idea so lots of markers but I can't use  any of that anyway so I play piano so I can relax  

or I I play piano four relaxing  play I play piano four relaxation  

typically we would say I play piano four  relaxation or another way to express this
