The weather here in England at the moment is not very good.

It's very wet, windy.

It's dull.

It's not too cold.

We have around 12 Celsius,

which I suppose is about average for this time of year.

I wonder, did you get caught out by any.

April Fool's jokes?

Traditionally, on the 1st of April, a lot of people like to play tricks

or pretend that something has happened when it hasn't.

We like to fool other people to fool someone.

The word fool is

a verb.

It can also be a noun.

So the person is the fool

or you can fool another person.

You can play a trick on them.

You can do something to deceive them

and make them look very silly.

Even though things seem to be a little bit slow today.

What is happening is something happening that I don't know about.

I wonder.

I was expecting a few more people joining me.

I have a feeling it is connected to the fact that last weekend

we did put the clocks forward by one hour.

So that might be the reason I would not be surprised

if one or two people join me later on and they say, Mr.

And I will say, no, we have changed the clocks here in the UK.

So far we are only three days into the new month, so I hope it's going well.

We have a lot of things coming up.

We have my new YouTube channel.

You might not believe this, but I was working on some of the information,

some of the things connected to my new YouTube channel

way into the early hours of this morning.

I couldn't sleep last night.

I will tell you why.

We went out for a meal yesterday. Mr.

Steve and myself, we had a nice meal.

The only problem was, I think I may have eaten too much food.

We had the most delicious food.

I had a very large potato

toe and casserole dish.

It was absolutely gorgeous.

The only problem was there was a lot of garlic in the meal

and during the night I could not get to sleep.

I don't know about you, but if I eat too much garlic,

what happens is my stomach becomes quite bad.

Very.

It's quite sensitive sometimes.

My little tummy.

So I was awake.

So I came down here into my studio.

I did it around about 2:00 this morning and I stayed here for 2 hours

during the night doing some things to my new YouTube channel.

So I am putting a lot of effort into my new channel,

which will be

available in a few days from now.

I suppose I can give you some clues about my new channel.

First of all, it is all about learning English,

of course, because that is what I do

and I've been doing it for many, many, many years on YouTube.

And my new channel will have lessons for those

who are learning English as a second language and maybe some people

who are starting their journey into the world of English.

Also, there will be the opportunity to have translations of each lesson

in your individual language as well.

So you can have my lesson, you can watch the lesson,

you can read the lovely big captions

on the screen because there will be captions

and underneath the video there will be translations

in your local language,

whatever your native language is.

So all of that coming up.

I am very excited about it,

so I am hoping there will be lots of new subscribers

joining my new YouTube channel, maybe lots of people

who want to follow a different type of English lesson.

So I think sometimes doing this it might be too fast.

Maybe sometimes my my speech is too quick.

So I thought, I will make lessons for those who are learning

English as a second language, but they have just started.

So that is what my new channel will be all about.

We will talk a little bit more

about that next weekend, next Sunday when we are back.

we went to Ironbridge, a lovely place not very far away from where I live.

film using my mobile phone.

So I didn't take any photographs yesterday.

So we had a lovely walk.

My back, by the way, is feeling okay.

It's not too bad.

The pain is slowly going away.

But I have to say I am looking forward to the time

when my back is not hurting because it is literally

a pain in the back.

I have to say it is very annoying, especially if you stand up for many,

many hours like I do when I'm preparing my live streams.

We are talking about numbers today.

Numbers. We use them all the time.

When we are counting, when we are listing,

when we are signing in or logging

in, maybe to one of our online accounts or maybe your bank account,

or maybe you are buying something with your

debit card.

You see, I have one here.

I can't show you the number, but that is my

my little debit card

whenever I use it.

Quite often I have to put my PIN number.

My personal identity number

is what that stands for.

So your PIN number is a type of number.

There might also be an identity number.

So quite often many of us will carry some sort of information

about ourselves, be it a driving license perhaps,

or maybe your passport if you are travelling to another country.

Of course, in some countries they also have identity cards.

Here in England, we don't have identity cards,

not yet anyway.

Some people at the moment are talking about bringing in identity cards,

so there are a lot of people at the moment discussing

certain subjects and topics.

One of them, of course, being immigration,

a very controversial, a very big topic here in the UK.

And once in a while this

particular topic comes up again and again

and that subject is identity cards.

So you might have your own number

that relates to your identity.

So maybe one day I will have to carry an identity card around with me.

Although technically I will be honest with you.

We do have identity cards here,

except they are called driving licences.

So many people have a car, many people have a driving licence

and it is very easy to find out who that person is in the car.

Or maybe you can ask someone to show their driving licence.

So you might say that even though we don't officially

have identity cards here in England,

we kind of do

because we have driving licences, we have passports,

we normally have some form of identification.

So there is always something, a birth certificate.

Everyone has one of those

because we were all at some point

born,

Even though I'm still not too sure about myself,

I still think sometimes I was made in a laboratory.

Sometimes you have to have proof of your identity

if you want to buy a certain thing.

So now you can't buy guns here in the UK.

So here you can't just go into a shop and buy a gun

because they are basically illegal.

However, in other countries you can.

So I suppose a good example would be the United States

where you can go into a shop and show your identity,

maybe prove that that you are the person you say you are,

and then you can buy maybe a shotgun or a rifle

and some ammunition, and then you can go home

and think

of all the wonderful things you can do with it.

However, here in England, we don't.

We can't.

You see, guns are illegal.

You can't buy them.

However, there are special licenses here in the UK

that people can buy

with a gun.

So there is a licence, you will buy the licence.

It will allow you to own normally just one shotgun

and quite often that particular licence is given to farmers,

people who have livestock, people

who have to protect their property in some way.

So you can buy guns I suppose.

And quite often you have to prove some identity, you have to show who you are.

Quite often there will be a photograph or maybe something showing where you live,

how old you are, and quite often there will be

an identity number as well.

Guns are not

easily available here in the UK.

That's probably the reason why you rarely hear

of any of any serious shootings.

Fortunately, we don't have them very often.

They don't happen very often, unlike

other places where they do happen very often.

Can I say a big hello to my viewers in Taiwan?

And at the moment during the night, two

serious earthquakes occurred.

And I don't know if you've seen the images on the Internet, but

some of the images are quite harrowing, I have to say.

Although there is one that did make me smile.

I don't know if you saw it, but there was a television presenter, a young lady,

and she was presenting live on TV in Taiwan.

And then suddenly the studio started shaking and moving around.

But the young lady just carried on.

She carried on presenting.

She didn't seem very upset by the fact that all of the lights in the studio

were swinging around and everything was going from side to side.

So can I say, Wow, whoever that lady is,

she will never have to worry about finding another job anywhere.

If she wanted to move to another TV station.

All she has to do is show that video clip of her during an earthquake

carrying on, presenting, staying calm.

How amazing is that?

I'm not sure what I would do.

I think I would run away.

I think I would hide somewhere and I think I would scream like a girl.

I think so.

But I hope if you are watching in

Taiwan at the moment, I hope everything is okay where you are.

Fortunately, there was no su nami, even though a lot of people

on the internet said there was or there was going to be, but there wasn't.

So fortunately, the latest news that I saw

there was no serious aftershock, which surprised me

but very dramatic pictures indeed.

What is fact? Is it anything in particular?

It is a very interesting number that I am drawn towards.

And the reason for that is because today I am talking about numbers,

idioms, phrases connected to numbers.

And it is amazing how often we use numbers in our day to day life.

Even computers

rely on numbers,

although they are of course a different type of number.

They are ones and zeros

and we often refer to that as binary

binary numbers or binary system.

So all of the calculations, all of the things

that happen involve zero and

one and that's it.

It's just lots of them all

moving around at the same time.

move in the room

as I was saying, if you look in the garden at the moment,

you will see there are many birds feeding because the weather is not very good.

The weather is a little bit unsettled, let's just say, and things

are not very nice actually outside, even though it's very warm.

But you can see there are lots of birds feeding on the bird feeders.

We have lots of goldfinches.

So those birds you can see on the left are actually

old finches.

They like to come into the garden

and have some food

and that's what they are doing.

We are looking at numbers, words and phrases

connected to numbers and we do use numbers quite often in English.

You may have noticed when we are counting, when we are recording the amount

of something, the number quite often

when we are talking about quantity,

we will often use numbers.

So numbers are used very often.

So let's take a look, shall we?

Let's dive into today's

subject and see what happens.

How did I get that?

Anyway, we are looking at numbers, words and phrases connected to numbers.

I wonder what your favourite number is.

A lot of people have a favourite.

Some people feel as if they have a lucky number.

What about you? Do you have a lucky number?

I used to believe that my lucky number was four,

but not anymore.

I don't think I have one anymore.

Here we go then.

When we talk about numbers, we are describing or naming

or looking at a character representing

a quantity or an amount.

So you can see here I have some lovely numbers here that I've put on the screen.

You might be thinking, Mr.

Duncan, what do these numbers mean?

Do they represent anything?

They don't know that I represent anything.

So we have one, two, three, four, five,

six, 27,

42, 68

136 Wow.

And 2024

or 2024.

Well, I suppose the final figure there is one that we can all relate to,

because that is this year I feel as if I am reading the lottery numbers out.

I would be a very good voice.

If anyone needs a voice

to to to read out the lottery numbers in their country,

then I think I could do a very good job of it.

Number one.

Number two,

Number three.

Number four,

27, 42,

68, 136.

Yeah, I think I could do that very easily.

So when we look at numbers, we are looking at numbers that are

specific or relating to

quantity, maybe something you are

counting.

Maybe I will be counting the number of mugs that I

have sold on my YouTube channel.

Maybe, perhaps.

Who knows?

So there are many ways of using numbers

and they do exist in many areas of our life.

I think it's safe to say

numbers can be described

as a numeral numeral,

so each individual number can be a numeral

or of course, numbers together can also be a numeral.

But normally we we will describe one single number

as a numeral.

We can also say figure as well.

So a number can be a figure, an amount.

The amount of something, the number, the figure,

the numeral each numeral

in the amount will make up that particular figure.

A considerable

amount is very large.

So maybe a person who is wealthy,

maybe they are one of those very successful YouTubers.

Not like me, I'm afraid.

I am not one of those.

I am the opposite of that.

So unfortunately I don't have any branded

soft drinks available in the supermarket with my face on it, unfortunately.

But I do have mugs and they will be coming very soon.

Okay, I'm going to stop mentioning that now because I've done it too often.

I think so.

Something considerable is big is very big.

It is huge.

Maybe a person who has a very good job,

they earn a considerable figure,

a large amount,

or maybe they work on YouTube like me

and they earn a small amount.

They earn very little,

so they have to instead sell mugs

or of course they might be a very terrible YouTuber.

They might be someone who has no viewers ever,

and they might have an insignificant amount.

So when we describe something as insignificant, it is very, very small,

very tiny.

It is almost invisible.

It is so small.

So some people don't earn a lot of money doing YouTube.

Some people earn a lot of money and some people don't.

Yeah, it's true.

We might talk about the number of something

a considerable amount, as I just said,

a large amount or small amount

or an insignificant amount.

If it is very, very small, we might ask

how many there are of something,

how many people are coming to the party?

How many hats does Mr.

Duncan own?

How many mugs do you want to buy for Mr.

Duncan? Something like that.

Or maybe how much? How much?

If you are asking about the quantity, maybe you want to know

how much, how much money

does the top YouTuber

on this site, how much do they earn?

How much do you love me?

that's a good question.

How much do you love me?

Do you love me a lot or do you not love me at all?

Maybe.

But quite often when we say how much we often refer

to quantity and quite often

that will be referred to using a number,

some sort of number, what is the total?

So maybe if you are buying lots of things

in the supermarket, quite often there will be a total.

The final number is the total.

After you add everything else up.

In business, we often talk about the bottom line.

So when we talk about the bottom line in business,

we are talking about the final figure,

the final number at the bottom.

Continuing

the number of something can also be a code.

So we can talk about amount of something,

how much there is of something,

or we can talk about a certain number, a certain number

that might appear in a particular place,

maybe a type of code.

Perhaps you have to enter a code,

maybe you work at an office where the door is always locked.

So you have to beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.

Enter the code so you can get in.

You can use a set of numbers as a key,

a type of key to get in to a certain place,

or maybe on your computer or perhaps on your smart phone.

You have a code that you have to enter.

A phone number is also a type of number.

We are using that particular phone number so you can contact me.

Can you imagine that?

Can you imagine what would happen if I gave everyone

my phone number?

I think my phone would be ringing all the time.

I rarely do.

So there might be a press number where we talk about press number.

We mean a password using numbers.

Or maybe if you have locked all of your money

and all of your lovely expensive jewellery in a safe,

a place that is safe to keep something in,

you might have to enter some numbers

to get in.

So there might be a combination which is a great word

when you think about it.

Combination just means things that are together.

In this particular situation, we are talking about a set of numbers

that are used to get in to something

either a safe or a locked door, perhaps.

Also, you could have a serial number.

We will talk about that in a moment as we journey on.

A number can also relate to

one thing, a particular thing, an identity number.

Now we talked about this earlier on.

Everyone has some sort of identity number.

Even if you work for a company, maybe you will be given a number

So the number that you have that goes with your name

and also your employment in a certain company,

maybe you have an identity number in your country,

so maybe you have to carry around a card

to show who you are.

It is used as proof

that you are the person you say you are.

The house number often uses a number, but of course,

if you live in a very posh area,

people don't use numbers, they use names.

So instead of their house having a number,

it will sometimes have a lovely name like,

I don't know, Rose Villa,

Swallow Fields,

Meadowbrook.

So if you live in a posh

part of the UK, in England, especially,

quite often the houses will have a name instead of a number,

which is very confusing for the postman, because if you live in an area

where all of the houses have no numbers, they only have names

and your postman is new

or post lady of course.

Yeah, because you have to be careful nowadays.

I don't want to get arrested for hate speech.

A location on a map can also be shown

using numbers as well.

Perhaps an account number, maybe your bank account,

maybe your insurance account, even your YouTube channel.

So my YouTube channel has a set of numbers

so they have nothing to do with the name of the channel.

It is a special number that YouTube will use

to identify this channel that I own.

Maybe also the

serial number of a certain item.

So maybe if you own something normally

something expensive or something that

the manufacturer or the maker does not want you to copy,

that will often be a serial number and identity number.

That is unique to that one item.

Quite often we will give it a serial number.

You might count the quantity of something using numbers.

Of course we all do it.

How many people are coming to the party?

How many children are here today?

Maybe in the classroom.

Sometimes the teacher will count

the pupils in the classroom

to see how many there are attending.

Maybe me.

Maybe I am going to count and see how many people are here.

How many people are here today.

Let me just stay still. Don't move.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. I'm so.

So there are many ways

of recording the amount of something using numbers you count.

You tally.

Tally just means to make a record of the quantity

and quite often later you will look at what the amount is.

And I will show you how that works in a few moments.

You might also record the quantity of something.

So I suppose at this time of year, many farmers in this area

have lots of new lambs that are being born

and they have to make sure that they know how many lambs there are.

So they will have to count them.

They count the lambs and of course they count the sheep,

which is not

easy because quite often people will fall asleep.

So when you tally something,

it is an old way of counting

and quite often it is used still as a way of counting things.

It is a very easy way, a very quick way of counting things,

and then afterwards you can work out how many of those things there are.

So you can see there on the screen

a tally can be marked using lines.

Lines are drawn with one line

drawn through to signify five.

So you can see there on that piece of paper,

someone is tallying.

And I will show you quickly here if I can find my piece of paper.

Where where has it gone?

Where is my piece of paper?

I had a piece of paper a few minutes ago and now it's disappeared.

Now I'm going to get angry.

So maybe if I am counting something, perhaps I will tally.

So I will count.

I will count.

And every time I get

to four,

I will draw a line through it.

So every time I reach five, that is what I will do.

And then afterwards I can add up all of those tallies

and come to

a total or result.

So there are many ways of doing that.

I hope I show that clearly.

I will show it again just to make sure.

So that is what it looks like when you tally something.

If you are counting something,

maybe lots of things that are the same, you will often use

tally

what is.

Yes, the tally can also be a verb as well.

So tally is also to work out

the result or the answer you tally.

Figure out if you figure out something, it means you are trying

to come to a conclusion why something happened.

Or maybe you are working out some sort of equation using numbers.

Maybe your wife.

One day

she packed her bags and left you and you don't know why.

So now you will have to figure out

the reason why she left you.

Maybe it was your bad cooking.

Maybe the police catch you.

Maybe you are trying to run away from the law and they catch you.

You can say that your number is up.

You must now face your punishment

to be chosen for a certain job or a task.

So quite often we can use

this particular phrase in many ways,

but quite often we use it when we talk about coming to the end of something.

to be at sixes and sevens.

If you are often at sixes and sevens,

it means you are in a chaotic or confused state.

Maybe you are rushing around in the morning

and you have lots of things to do.

than it usually happens, maybe you are walking

very quickly.

You can say that

your legs were going ten to the dozen.

They were going very fast because you were walking quickly.

So if something goes ten to the dozen, it means it is going very quick,

very fast, faster than it normally does.
