There are many ways of expressing action in English.

Há muitas maneiras de expressar ação em inglês.

We can state a moment when something is happening, using different statements to express the thing that is making it happen.

Podemos afirmar um momento em que algo está acontecendo, usando diferentes afirmações para expressar o que está fazendo isso acontecer.

The movement that can be seen, the moment it occurs, the way it is happening, and the reason it is occurring.

O movimento que pode ser visto, o momento em que ocorre, a maneira como está acontecendo e a razão pela qual está ocorrendo.

Put simply; we are stating

Simplificando; estamos afirmando

who, what, when, how and why.

quem, o quê, quando, como e por quê.

First we will look at ‘who’ In this statement we are stating the identity of the main thing involved.

Primeiro, veremos "quem". Nesta declaração, estamos declarando a identidade da coisa principal envolvida.

This can be one thing or many things.

Isso pode ser uma coisa ou muitas coisas.

One person or many people.

Uma pessoa ou muitas pessoas.

A single object or many objects.

Um único objeto ou muitos objetos.

In this example, we will look at ‘who’. A person is involved.

Neste exemplo, veremos “quem”. Uma pessoa está envolvida.

The action involves a person.

A ação envolve uma pessoa.

Human actions without identity will always use ‘who’ or ‘whom’.

Ações humanas sem identidade sempre usarão ‘quem’ ou ‘a quem’.

If the main thing involved is an object, then we will say ‘what’.

Se o principal envolvido for um objeto, então diremos "o quê".

‘Who did that?’ or ‘what did that?’

‘Quem fez isso?’ ou ‘o que fez isso?’

“Who stole my bike?” “What made that noise?”

“Quem roubou minha bicicleta?” “O que fez esse barulho?”

We will often use these in the form of a question, asking for the identity of a person or commenting on someone generally will also use ‘who’ as the subject.

Muitas vezes, usaremos isso na forma de uma pergunta, perguntando sobre a identidade de uma pessoa ou comentando sobre alguém. Geralmente, também usaremos "quem" como sujeito.

“Who is that?” “I don't know who they are.”

"Que é aquele?" “Eu não sei quem eles são.”

When relating an action or asking about the identity of the cause, we will say ‘who’ if it is a person and ‘what’ if it is anything else?

Ao relatar uma ação ou perguntar sobre a identidade da causa, diremos "quem" se for uma pessoa e "o quê" se for qualquer outra coisa?

It is worth remembering that ‘what’ also relates to the actual occurrence.

Vale lembrar que “o que” também se relaciona com a ocorrência real.

As a question put forward... “what is going on?”

Como uma pergunta apresentada... “o que está acontecendo?”

“What do you want me to do?”

“O que você quer que eu faça?”

In this sense, we are stating ‘what’ as the occurrence itself,

Neste sentido, estamos afirmando ‘o que’ como a ocorrência em si.

The thing done, the thing being done or the thing that will be done,

A coisa feita, a coisa sendo feita ou a coisa que será feita,

all refer to ‘what’.

tudo se refere a ‘o que’.

Next we have ‘when’.

Em seguida temos ‘quando’.

This relates to time. It is easy to state when something did happen, is happening or will happen.

Isso se relaciona com o tempo. É fácil afirmar quando algo aconteceu, está acontecendo ou vai acontecer.

“I will see you when you get home.”

“Te vejo quando você chegar em casa.”

One thing might happen when something else occurs.

Uma coisa pode acontecer quando outra coisa acontece.

“I will clean the car when the rain stops.”

“Vou limpar o carro quando a chuva parar.”

When relates to the moment or the time when the thing occurs.

Quando se refere ao momento ou à época em que a coisa ocorre.

As a question we will often use ‘when’ whilst asking about a planned event

Como pergunta, frequentemente usaremos "quando" ao perguntar sobre um evento planejado

or when seeking information concerning the moment of an event taking place.

ou ao buscar informações sobre o momento em que um evento está ocorrendo.

“When will the party start?”

“Quando a festa vai começar?”

“When did the robbery take place?”

“Quando ocorreu o roubo?”

Next we will look at 'how',

Em seguida, veremos "como",

in this case, we are looking at the method or the way in which something will be done is being done or was done.

neste caso, estamos analisando o método ou a maneira pela qual algo será feito, está sendo feito ou foi feito.

We often explain the method of something using how.

Muitas vezes explicamos o método de algo usando o como.

“This is how you tie a knot”.

“É assim que se dá um nó”.

“This is how you make bread.”

“É assim que se faz pão.”

As a question, you might ask how.

Como pergunta, você pode perguntar como.

When unsure of the method of doing something, “How do I turn on the computer?”

Quando não tiver certeza do método de fazer algo, “Como ligo o computador?”

“How do I get to your house?”

“Como chego na sua casa?”

We might also use how, when trying to find out the way in which a person was able to do something.

Também podemos usar how quando tentamos descobrir a maneira pela qual uma pessoa foi capaz de fazer algo.

As a shocked reaction, you might say, “How could you do that?”

Como reação de choque, você pode dizer: “Como você pôde fazer isso?”

“How could you steal money from your own mother?”

“Como você pôde roubar dinheiro da sua própria mãe?”

This is often said in shock and disbelief.

Isso é frequentemente dito em choque e descrença.

Finally, we have the small word with the big question.

Por fim, temos a pequena palavra com a grande pergunta.

The word is ‘why’. We often use ‘why’ as an interrogative statement when trying to find the reason for something occurring.

A palavra é "por quê". Muitas vezes usamos “por que” como uma declaração interrogativa quando tentamos descobrir a razão de algo estar acontecendo.

“Why did it happen?”

“Por que isso aconteceu?”

“Why did you steal my wallet?”

“Por que você roubou minha carteira?”

“Why did you lie to me?”

We can ask for the reason and we can state the reason.

Podemos perguntar o motivo e podemos declarar o motivo.

“I love spending time with you, that is why I enjoy working here.”

“Adoro passar tempo com você, é por isso que gosto de trabalhar aqui.”

‘Why’ is always the reason.

"Por que" é sempre a razão.

Whether it is put forward as a question or stated as an explanation in the form of a reply.

Seja apresentada como uma pergunta ou declarada como uma explicação na forma de uma resposta.

Remember... ‘Who’ relates to identity.

Lembre-se... ‘Quem’ está relacionado à identidade.

‘What’ relates to the occurrence. ‘When’ relates to time.

‘O que’ se refere à ocorrência. “Quando” se refere ao tempo.

‘How’ relates to the method.

‘Como’ se relaciona com o método.

‘Why’ relates to the reason.

‘Por que’ se refere à razão.
