In today's lesson we are going to talk about pronouns.

오늘 수업에서 우리는 대명사에 대해 이야기할 것입니다.

So the first question must be...what is a pronoun?

따라서 첫 번째 질문은... 대명사란 무엇입니까?

A pronoun is a word that can be used as a noun by itself

대명사는 그 자체로 명사로 사용될 수 있는 단어

and one that refers to either of those taking part in a conversation, such as 'I' or 'you',

or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere, such as a third person or a thing that is not present,

This might seem like a simple form of grammar, but sadly there are some complications,

which is to say; there are different types of pronouns.

In fact the use of pronouns in English is one of the most debated and contested parts of the whole English language.

사실 영어에서 대명사의 사용은 전체 영어에서 가장 논쟁적이고 경쟁적인 부분 중 하나입니다.

Many heated exchanges have taken place over how these different types of pronouns should be used.

이러한 다양한 유형의 대명사가 어떻게 사용되어야 하는지에 대해 많은 열띤 교환이 이루어졌습니다.

So let's dive straight in

and take a look at them...shall we?

A person pronoun forms a group of words that show contrasts of person, gender, number, and case, or occurrence.

인칭 대명사는 인칭, 성별, 숫자, 사례 또는 발생의 대조를 나타내는 단어 그룹을 형성합니다.

The words are - I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us and them.

단어는 나, 너, 그, 그녀, 그것, 우리, 그들, 나, 그, 그녀, 우리 그리고 그들입니다.

You will see that this set of words can be paired to show contrast.

이 단어 집합이 대조를 나타내기 위해 쌍을 이룰 수 있음을 알 수 있습니다.

For example - he and she contrast each other. That is to say, they can be compared.

예를 들어, 그와 그녀는 서로 대조됩니다. 즉, 비교할 수 있습니다.

The correct use of personal pronouns is one of the most debated areas of English usage.

인칭 대명사의 올바른 사용은 영어 사용에서 가장 논쟁이 많은 분야 중 하나입니다.

A good case being the use of subjective personal pronouns.

좋은 경우는 주관적인 인칭 대명사를 사용하는 것입니다.

This refers to the subject in question containing a personal pronoun.

이것은 인칭 대명사를 포함하는 해당 주제를 나타냅니다.

As we have already seen - I, we, they, he and she are all subjective personal pronouns.

이미 살펴본 바와 같이 나, 우리, 그들, 그, 그녀는 모두 주관적인 인칭 대명사입니다.

On the other hand, me, us, them, him and her are referred to as objective pronouns,

반면 me, us, them, him, her는 동사나

which means they are used as the object of a verb or preposition.

전치사의 목적어로 쓰인다는 의미의 목적격 대명사라고 합니다.

This is why it is incorrect to say

그렇기 때문에

It should be...

It should be...라고 말하는 것이 잘못된 것입니다.

You wouldn't say 'Me went to the shops.'

'나 가게에 갔다'라고 말하지 않을 것입니다.

Using the pronoun alone makes the mistake very obvious.

대명사만 사용하면 실수가 매우 명백해집니다.

It is also incorrect to say

The preposition in the sentence causes the pronoun to be 'me'.

문장의 전치사가 대명사를 '나'로 만든다고 말하는 것도 올바르지 않습니다.

'He came with me.'

'그는 나와 함께 왔어요.'

A good way to check whether a pronoun works in a sentence, is to simplify it.

대명사가 문장에서 작동하는지 확인하는 좋은 방법은 단순화하는 것입니다.

Of course not everything in English is so straight forward.

물론 영어의 모든 것이 그렇게 간단하지는 않습니다.

This is where the traditional analysis starts to break down.

이것은 전통적인 분석이 무너지기 시작하는 곳입니다.

Problems arise when a personal pronoun is used alone without the context of a verb or a preposition.

인칭 대명사가 동사나 전치사의 문맥 없이 단독으로 사용될 때 문제가 발생합니다. 예를 들어,

Traditionalists sometimes argue, for example that...

전통주의자들은 때때로 다음과 같이 주장합니다. 예를 들어... 는

are incorrect and that the correct form is...

Of course for many native speakers, the first use sounds more natural.

물론 많은 원어민에게는 처음 사용하는 것이 더 자연스럽게 들립니다.

So the dispute between traditionalists, who by the way base many of their arguments on the use of Latin,

그래서 많은 주장을 라틴어 사용에 근거한 전통주의자들

and those who use English on a daily basis rattles on.

However nowadays is it generally acceptable to say - 'Who is it? It's me!', 'She's taller than him', 'I didn't do as well as her'.

그러나 요즘에는 일반적으로 '누구지? 나야!', '쟤보다 키가 크다', '내가 걔만큼 못했는데'.

Finally there is the impersonal pronoun, which fortunately is much easier to explain.

마지막으로 다행히도 설명하기가 훨씬 쉬운 비인칭 대명사가 있습니다.

An impersonal pronoun expresses the use of 'it' when used without definite reference or antecedent.

비인칭 대명사는 명확한 참조나 선행사 없이 사용될 때 'it'의 사용을 표현합니다.

An impersonal pronoun is used in sentences such as 'It was snowing' or 'It seems hard to believe'.

비인칭 대명사는 '눈이 오고 있었다', '믿기 힘든 것 같다'와 같은 문장에서 사용됩니다.

So that is all you need to know about pronouns.

이것이 대명사에 대해 알아야 할 전부입니다.
