Oh here we go again another two hours of spontaneous chat is on the way as we say goodbye to April

and hello to May coming up today lots and lots of topics including what is a bromance

do you know what a bromance is can you explain what a bromance actually is because we've

seen a lot of romances take place this week also do you prefer a night in or a night out

we'll also be looking at emojis as well do you ever use emojis do you ever use them when

you are chatting on the internet or on your mobile phone we'll also get a chance to see

mr. Steve using this yes he will show us what what you do with that particular thing and

of course lots of live chat with you as well after all it's just after 2 o'clock here in

another week another week has gone by not only that but we are about to say goodbye

to April as well bye April bye we will be waving goodbye to April and May the month

of May is just around the corner ah my goodness I have had such a busy day today it's always

busy on Sunday because I have to do this you see that's the reason why so it's always a

very very busy day Sunday I hope your Sunday is not as hectic as mine that's a great word

hectic if you are having a very hectic day you are having a chaotic day I'm also enjoying

my cup of coffee I don't know what it is sometimes sometimes the only thing you want in your

day to keep you going is a cup of coffee so that's what I'm doing now thank you mr. Steve

mr. Steve made me a lovely cup of coffee isn't that nice hmm

oh very nice it's international dance day did you know that can you dance are you good

at dancing a dee dee dee dee dee doo dee doo dee doo dee doo dee doo dee doo doo stayin

now I remember when I was a child I used to go when I say child by the way I mean teenager

because now my teenage years seem like my childhood because it's such a long time ago

so when I was a teenager I used to love going to the discos they used to be a pub very close

to my house and on a Saturday night they would have a big disco there and every Saturday

I would go there and I would strut my stuff on the dance floor I was actually quite good

at dancing to be honest would you would you were would you believe that if I said that

I was good at dancing would you believe me I don't know how is the weather because it

wouldn't be live English without talking about the weather let's have a look out the window

yes we are going to look out the square window and there it is that in fact is a live view

at the moment outside and you can see the weather not too bad it's not raining it is

cold though I must say it does not feel like late April it feels like late November to

be honest so it's very very cold today very chilly very very cold for the end of April

because may is just around the corner and during May we normally get nice warm sunny

days but at the moment we are not getting anything anything like that whatsoever and

I don't know what's going on so there it is a live view looking out across the hills and

the countryside near where I live and you can see the yellow the yellow fields full

of rapeseed it would appear that many farmers now actually do grow rapeseed it's become

a very popular type of crop now many years ago most of the farmers round here would grow

barley and wheat and other kinds of grain and maybe things like sprouts and maybe peas

but now most of the farmland around here is used for growing rapeseed because it would

appear that that is where all the money is so it would appear that most of the farmland

around here now is being used for growing rapeseed so that is what the yellow is in

the distance and you can see there are lots of fields growing rapeseed very popular now

so it is a Sunday afternoon and it wouldn't be Sunday without the live chat so let's have

with you well sometimes I like to have a nice slurp it's nothing like a good slurp and each

is here apparently it's very hot in India 36 degrees my goodness now that that is very

that's very kind of you to say thanks a lot so this week of course we had some big news

this week with the royal birth so now we have another little royal baby to feed and take

care of by the way when I say take care and feed I mean the taxpayer of this country will

help to feed and look after the new royal baby and we have a name now because last week

we were trying to guess last Wednesday we were trying to guess what the new baby's name

would be and apparently it is lui lui so yes I wasn't expecting that I think mr. Steve

guest Arthur I'm sure he made a guess of Arthur which was quite good it was actually a very

good guess because one of the other names of the new Royal baby is Arthur so I think

mr. Steve was very good there he did very well I was completely wrong because I thought

it was going to be Philip so I really did believe I really did think that the new Royal

baby would be called Philip but I was wrong completely wrong no not Philip in fact it

is lui lui there are quite a few famous people called lui of course there was a famous king

many many years ago called lui as well so there are lots and lots of Louise around so

yes a very unusual name I always think I think actually lui comes from friends I think it's

actually a French name if I'm not mistaken Wow the live chat is very busy let's have

another look at the live chat oh my goodness we are talking about emojis today the emotion

icons that many people use now in their messages when they send emails and when they compose

their SMS messages so there are many different types of emoji but I think sometimes we use

emojis at the wrong time or during the wrong moment so sometimes I think we express ourselves

very badly when we use emojis so that's something we're going to talk about later because mr.

Steve is coming later yes of course he is mr. Steve will be here later on and of course

he will be live as well we have a lot of mr. Steve today to look forward to in fact I think

most of today's live stream we'll be taken up by mr. Steve [Music] [Music] do-do-do-do-do-do-do

so we are about to say goodbye to April I don't know about you but I think April has

been a very very long month it seems to have gone on forever April is it my imagination

do you think April has been a very long month and I've done so many live streams this month

I've done around about 12 or 13 live streams this month so I think yes sir around about

12 12 live streams would that be fair so yes I've done quite a few live streams but the

big question is how many live streams will I be doing in May because for me May is going

to be a very busy month because I have a lovely special guest coming to stay here for a few

days also I am very busy doing some decorating I am renovating the kitchen as regular viewers

will be aware of and also other things as well going on so for some reason I don't know

why May is going to be a very busy month so I'm not sure when I will be on in May I will

come up with a schedule and I will put it on to my youtube channel and also I will let

you know on Facebook as well there are many ways of getting in touch by the way so you

page there are many ways and of course you can catch me here every Sunday from 2:00 p.m.

a new Royal baby we'll be talking about emojis later on also are you a good dancer and another

question because this week there have been some very big events taking place we have

the new Royal baby we also had a lot of positive news from Korea when the two leaders met and

they said hello hello South Korea hello North Korea how are you today I'm not too bad thank

you shall we go for a walk okay so it looks as if North Korea and South Korea are going

to become very good friends but how long will it last for because this has happened before

let us not forget that the leaders of North Korea and South Korea have met in this way

before it has happened and it has always come to nothing so we will keep our fingers crossed

and hope that North Korea and South Korea get together and live in harmony we can only

wish for that and maybe the rest of the world will follow as well who knows and of course

we had macron and Donald Trump this week meeting and they were holding hands and they were

they were kissing and hugging in fact I think they had quite a bromance going on what is

a bromance we will be talking all about that later on for those who are regular viewers

you will know that mr. Steve has been busy restoring one who visited one of his chairs

and it is actually right now in the studio would you like to have a look so here it is

so there is mr. Steve's chair you can just see the top of it so that is one of the chairs

that mr. Steve has been restoring and as promised last Wednesday here is mr. Steve in the garden

showing us his newly restored chair so here it is the restored chair that belonged to

my grandmother and grandfather so it looked awful before so I've polished it I've cleaned

it and I've been using this old fashioned polish to restore it back to its former glory

so I'm I've also cleaned the seat cover that was on it as well so I'm just going to give

it a final little polish like that and then I'm going to put the seat cover on which is

over here one clean seat cover so this should fit in

place there we go voila one restored 100 year old chair a hundred years old this seat is

can you believe it can you believe it that looks amazing Steve Wow you've done a really

good job of that I feel at a hundred because these chairs were actually sitting in the

garage and they've been there for over five years just sitting there collecting dust and

and I kept saying to Steve I kept saying Steve you got to throw these chairs out because

they're there they're rubbish they rubbish they're junk they're just junk but but Steve's

done a really good job of restoring these chairs it's a great word that why don't you

have a sit on it and see what you think mr. Duncan I'm going to have a little sit down

there so let's go let's have a go let's hope you don't hit your head on the bush yeah I

don't worry about it don't worry it's okay I'm going to sit down on mr. Steve's restored

chair what do you think this alright I suppose yes

I was asking them yes it feels okay it's not too much a little bit a little bit wobbly

I must say it's a little bit wobbly wobbly so even though it looks nice I think I think

these seats have actually seen better days I think they are quite worn so the seat is

very wobbly but having said that I think Steve has done a very very good job well there mr.

Steve and it's it's very good to see that mr. Steve is also using this seat today in

the studio as well can you believe this chair is over a hundred years old thank you mr.

Steve thank you so let's go in now and we wouldn't need we will return you back to the

studio [Music] I must say that chair looks rather nice even though it is a little bit

wobbly it is a wobbly chair it is unstable so if something is wobbly wobbly it means

it is unstable it moves very easily it is wobbly we can also use the word rickety oh

I like that word something is very unstable it moves easily it has not been put together

very well you can say that it is rickety oh oh I like that one very much live chat is

very busy today by the way we have a lot of people on the live chat so let's have a look

shall we subtitles are not available on the live stream we are now broadcasting live at

29 minutes past 2:00 on a Sunday afternoon and this is live so there aren't any subtitles

we don't have subtitles on live streams and there is a reason for that is because we don't

know what we are going to say next so I might say flip-flop spillage underpants ladies in

long dresses you see so you it's very very random so sometimes when you do something

alive it is very random peaches cream with some strawberries see that's completely random

a man in the sky flying high waving to everyone he goes by see that's completely random so

there are no subtitles the excessive use of emojis is taking us back to the time when

we used hieroglyphics yes hieroglyphics is a very old form of writing so instead of using

words or letters you would actually use symbols so hieroglyphics yes or things that are like

characters so instead of using words satury no in Great Britain there is a new royal baby

but a normal baby has just passed away yes very sad news about little Alfie yes we've

been talking a lot of that here in the UK a lot about that story flood says I agree

but that's how we learn oh I'm not sure what you mean by that maybe you are referring to

the emojis I reef please upload subtitles there are no subtitles because this is live

right now so we can't put subtitles on a live stream however there is good news because

later there will be subtitles when the live stream has finished and YouTube will put the

subtitles on so they will be available later after the live stream has been recorded so

I thought the same thing in fact mr. Steve has done a very good job of the chair do you

want to see the chair again there it is there is the chair waiting for mr. Steve to sit

on it so if you look very carefully you can see the chair and mr. Steve will be sitting

right there in half an hour just under half an hour mr. Steve will be live as as live

I thought that looks very unusual I don't know what what it is it looks like some sort

of growth or tumor but I thought it was very very odd the strange thing is that there are

actually feathers growing on it so yes something very unusual there so if you think you're

having a difficult day imagine how that pigeon feels a chair for King steve-o please don't

say that don't say that about mr. Steve please don't call Steve King Steve we will never

hear the last of it King Steve can you imagine what the world would be like if mr. Steve

was the king dear me it looks like the pigeon has swallowed a ping pong ball yes it does

look rather unusual look at that I don't know what's going on but I think it's some sort

of growth or deformity but it's very unusual and this particular pigeon is a regular viewer

Oh a regular visitor actually he might be a regular viewer as well because he often

sits in my garden watching me so I don't know what is actually wrong with that pigeon but

it seems okay and I know for a fact that it is a male pigeon it is a male because I've

seen him following the female rules so I know for a fact that it is a male nicole says bromance

is a close male friendship yes I think this week we have had a lot of very high-profile

bromances we had the leaders of North and South Korea meeting holding hands and going

for a very romantic walk and also we had Donald Trump this week meeting with the French president

and they were getting very very close very personal with each other so yes bromance bromance

it is a kind of combination of two words so brother and romance bromance so when two men

are very friendly very close they have a special bond you can call that a bromance so quite

a lot of bromance is taking place this week I don't think so hello mr. Duncan could you

make an operation on the pigeon I'm not sure about that and I'm not qualified to do operations

so yes it looks like it's some sort of tumor or growth but it would appear that the pigeon

is doing okay it can it can fly perfectly well and it can feed and it was chasing all

of the lady pigeons around last week every little thing is going to be alright oh I like

that very optimistic Thank You of gun for that very optimistic I I like people who are

that I think that's a very very good idea and this is an excerpt from full English number

5 [Music] [Music] hi everybody and welcome to mr. Duncan's full English number five I

thought I would start off today's edition with a selfie just in case you're watching

this in 2050 and you don't know what to sell for years I'm not going to tell you and you

won't be able to ask me in person because I'm dead oh there you are hi everybody this

is mr. Duncan's full English number five my name is mr. Duncan and I'm ever so pleased

to meet you we are all here again to take a peek into that wonderful world of English

so let us all join hands and say the magic words for goodness sake mr. Duncan we haven't

got all day get on with it [Music] can you see what sort of weather we're having here

today well there is poor visibility for a start it isn't a clear day by any means it

is a foggy day here in England we can use foggy as an idiom to describe the inability

to remember something we can say I haven't the foggiest idea which means you do not remember

or you cannot recall a certain event or a piece of information today's fog has been

caused by warm and cold air colliding with each other this fog is made up of tiny particles

of moisture you often see fog forming in the early morning or evening or as the temperature

changes the subject of weather is a fascinating one and for the typical English person such

as myself it is a subject that is often discussed in general day-to-day conversation the

two words shown here may look similar but they are in fact very different the words

perspective and prospective are often confused that is to say one is used instead of the

other first of all the word perspective defines the way in which things are seen how an object

appears depending on its size shape and relative distance from other things around it in drawing

and painting perspective is used to give the illusion of depth and distance we can also

use this word to express a person's view of the world as their point of view a person's

perspective of the world the views and opinions held by us all come from our own perspective

then there is the word prospective which means something that is expected or is expecting

to be done in the future something that is likely to happen at a later date is prospective

I have a prospective client coming to my office tomorrow so now there is no need to get these

words confused every game I have given you a clear perspective of what the differences

are I have done this for you now and for all the prospective online students who will join

me in the future

can you see what I have here this is a saucepan full of boiling water the hot water is producing

steam steam is produced when water vaporizes normally water vapor cannot be seen but it

is possible to show it when extreme temperatures are used for example when hot vapor meets

cool air this is one of the ways in which clouds are formed the process is called evaporation

the word steam can be used in other ways for example a person can let off steam this expression

means that a person will release their tension and pent up energy by doing something the

action is normally a physical one such as going for a run having a dance or in extreme

cases screaming out loud it would be fair to say that we all need to let off steam at

some point it's time to take a look at another part of

English grammar continuing the theme of punctuation that we started in the last fall English today

we will take a look at the dreaded apostrophe this particular punctuation mark is a controversial

one as its use has been widely disputed over the years even now there seems to be some

confusion over how it should be used in general English the apostrophe serves two

purposes to show the possessive quality of something and to show that a word has been

shortened or a sentence has been made shorter in the possessive sense the apostrophe shows

that one thing belongs to another for example Duncan's pen jill's pencil st. Paul's Cathedral

the apostrophe can come at the end of the possessive word for example the teacher's

college is over there a commonly confused use of the apostrophe comes with the word

it's the apostrophe here shows the contraction of it is it's my birthday today when the apostrophe

is not used then the possessive tense is being expressed a mouse has no fur on its tail another

common mistake made with the apostrophe is to use it to show the plural of ordinary words

this is incorrect once again the apostrophe is only used when you wish to show a possessive

clause or the contraction of a word or sentence [Music] doo-doo-doo I hope you enjoyed an

excerpt from one of my full English lessons today we are talking all about emojis lots

of people use emojis now in their day to day life if they are communicating through a computer

maybe they are sending an email or maybe an instant message through their phone an SMS

message or maybe they are sending a message through whatsapp emojis have become very very

popular but have they made as lazy when it comes to communicating also sometimes and

this is something that I think so it is a kind of personal opinion I think that quite

often people use them inappropriately so they use them at the wrong moment so perhaps they

are replying to some bad news maybe a person sends them a message with some terrible news

and then that the other person replies by just sending an emoji an emotional icon with

someone crying maybe a smiley face but instead of smiling it is crying so I think sometimes

we can use emojis in the wrong way or maybe we rely on them too much so what do you think

we'll be talking about that later on mr. Steve apparently I didn't know this but mr. Steve

is very interested in emojis please don't ask me why but mr. Steve has a strange fascination

for emojis we will be finding out what that is all about let's have a look outside we

have another view outside now this is a live view pointing in a different direction oh

look I think I can see some blue sky there is some blue sky above the mountains and hills

and forests in the distance can you see there is a little bit of blue sky we might actually

get some sunshine today so there it is a live view looking out across the beautiful Shropshire

landscape on this Sunday afternoon live on YouTube we are live look it is now coming

up to ten minutes away from three o'clock mr. Steve will be here in ten minutes of course

we also have you as well on the live chat so let's have a look once again Lois says

all countries in the world should give up nuclear bombs why must some bully others this

is a very controversial subject but I think one of the things and this might sound very

strange but one of the big turning points in world peace came about with the development

of nuclear weapons now I know what you're going to say mr. Duncan you crazy man how

could you say that but you might find that because the superpowers of the world now have

possession of weapons of mass destruction and when we say mass destruction we mean hundreds

of thousands of people you might say that the world has become a more peaceful and more

settled place because of the threat of of the use of nuclear weapons so so I think in

a very strange way and you will probably disagree or agree I don't know but I think maybe the

world has become a more stable place and maybe a more peaceful place although at the moment

it might not seem like it so that's my thought on it so yes I'm not I'm not a fan of nuclear

weapons but for some reason from a strategic point of view it does appear to be something

that stops human beings from getting to too crazy there we go I've said it greetings from

Egypt Oh Amory wall D is here yes another one of my regular viewers it's nice to see

there are people coming back every week because at the moment YouTube is changing the way

it gives out or distributes videos and certainly live streams so yes you will find that there

are some changes taking place and of course YouTube last week celebrated its 13th year

13 years now I am now into my 12th year on YouTube so my lessons have been around almost

for the same amount of time as YouTube I am against any kind of weapon says Ricardo Bartleby

says people are relying too much on emojis and they are losing the ability to use complex

language yes it's almost I think it's almost too simple it is oversimplified you are making

things too basic so yes I I think in a strange sort of way I do agree with that that way

of thinking and also I think sometimes people use emojis inappropriately so they use them

at times when when they really shouldn't be using them so that's what I think anyways

so they are phone now I'm not saying that emojis are not fun because they are they are

fun but you will find that they can be used too much or too often so maybe that is just

again another thought so maybe some of you might think oh no it's good fun but I think

sometimes emojis are used at the wrong time and maybe if a person is informing you of

something that is very sad so instead of writing you will just send an emoji to them which

from my point of view is is quite inappropriate so mr. Steve will be talking all about that

a little bit later on also we were in the garage again this week mr. Steve was changing

the oil in his lawnmower something very exciting coming your way after three o'clock so please

don't go away the live chat as usual is very busy so I don't want to ignore you thanks

guys says Pedro Oh Pedro is very busy today yes on the live chat Thank You Pedro yes the

only problem at the moment as I'm reading the live chat is that YouTube has changed

its algorithms again and that's the reason why you might notice that a lot of my notifications

are not being sent anymore so when I do a live stream or if I put something on the internet

you might find that well many people won't be informed they won't be told about it so

this is something that is causing a lot of difficulty certainly for me it is rather annoying

that when I come on live very few of my subscribers are told about it and this causes all sorts

of problems especially for me because when I do my live streams and it takes a long time

to put these live streams together it isn't just a few moments of time it takes a very

long time and of course lots of effort and of course lots of money as well it costs me

money to do this can you believe it you might not believe it but it's free for you but from

my end I have to pay for all of this so that's that's the strange part and reward he says

I did not receive a notification from YouTube yes this is a big problem at the moment a

big problem a lot of people are complaining about it emojis can sometimes complement the

message yes I think they can be used in a fun way but sometimes I think they are used

inappropriately they are used at the wrong time so that's what I think anyway I'm reward

already i know i don't know what's going on with the youtubes at the moment now mr. steve

always says duncan you shouldn't say bad things about youtube but i think sometimes you have

to complain you have to make a stand do you agree with me so mr. steve is just preparing

himself we will also be watching mr. steve changed the oil on his lawnmower and can i

just tell you now it is as exciting as it sounds really it's it's absolutely scintillating

in fact i think in the past 13 years of youtube i think mr. steve changing the oil in his

lawnmower might be the most exciting thing ever on youtube ever a lot of people asking

about how much do I pay well I have to pay lots of subscriptions I have to buy software

I have to keep my studio maintained there are lots and lots of things I have to use

cloud storage for all of the things that I create there there is a lot of time and expense

that goes into doing this so that is something that I always like to to mention because a

lot of people don't realize that this actually does cost money to produce and I give it all

away for free it costs you nothing whatsoever it's true so mr. Steve is just one minute

away oh are you excited I really really hope so so stand by for mr. Steve he will be here

do you prefer to have a night in or a night out now these two sentences or expressions

mean to stay at home or to go out somewhere and enjoy some entertainment or maybe a nice

meal so if you have a night in it means you stay at home maybe you watch the television

that you go out somewhere you go out you have and night out or you can have a night in very

way Steve you in case you're wondering that why there's no split-screen today it's because

it's not working very well so I have to reset it so today we are using cuts today so we

are cutting between mr. Steve there he is and me oh it's either you or me not both of

us at the same time so that's it so we are cutting today we don't have the split screen

but don't worry the split screen will be back next week but I think it looks more like television

you see if you have the cut it looks almost like you're watching TV am I on I don't remember

I'm on or off the big question though it mr. Duncan is have you had something to eat today

because last week if you remember anyone watching mr. to disappear after through the livestream

and he came back stuffing his face full of his cinnamon crunches but have you had anything

plugs and sharpening the blade so it makes sense that we should change the oil this week

using that device that looks like it's probably something for : ik irrigation yes it the thing

the thing with the the syringe it looks like it looks like something you would use to put

you know up your bottom or maybe to feed a big animal but it isn't we will take a look

at that in a moment also today Steve I thought it'd be fun to to take a look at similes as

well as simile because these are used quite often in English and I thought today we would

mention some of those so can you off the top of your head just straight away Steve can

you think of any any similes well our figures figures of speech but you didn't tell me you

were going to do this mr. Duncan so you thrown me in at the deep end I always like to throw

Steve in at the deep end to be honest so why don't you start off by giving an example and

then that might jog my memory Galen similes similes are used at actually a lot in English

it might be the most common form of expression other than direct speech so I will give you

a little example now of a simile here we go as stubborn as so as stubborn as a mule yes

of course yes so that is a figure of speech or a simile you are comparing one thing to

something else but not necessarily as a connected thing so the two things that you are mentioning

are not directly connected so as stubborn as and of course we can say a mule mule mules

because sometimes but always say I think mules get a very bad publicity I think they get

a lot of bad press to be honest I think mules are lovely have you known many mules in your

time I've met a couple of mules mu L e mules a mule like they're a bit like donkeys aren't

they it must be a particular type of donkey I think a mule isn't it it's probably something

like a castrated donkey or something like that I don't know maybe somebody can look

that up for us I think it's a donkey that can't reproduce somehow like that I see because

because they've cut something off I'm not entirely sure but we could we could do with

somebody looking that up and then putting it on that I can we put the live chat up today

is similes similes or ex I've got one then for you a figure of speech I've got one which

is the opposite of the one you just used so you said as light as a feather I've got one

as heavy as as heavy as as heavy as I want to say well I suppose you could say as heavy

as a stone or as heavy as lead heavy as lead that's the common expression because lead

of course is a very heavy metal so if you say something's as heavy as lead so you might

pick somebody up and say oh you're as heavy as lead yes well they wouldn't like that or

they might say you Aras had heavy as an elephant yes heavy as a stone would be would be fine

yes but heavy as lead as the is the common ones who are going for the the exaggeration

that what's the heaviest metal but it's not lead but her led is certainly a very heavy

metal here's another one Steve as strong as an ox yes actually there's a couple here here

you could use yes as strong as an ox another animal another animal ox is of course a very

strong animals with strong shoulders for plowing fields and pulling things so as strong as

an ox or you can also say as strong as steel okay yeah that's a stronger steel so steel

is a very strong material so a strong as steel or as strong as a mr. Steve of course if we

go for the that as weak as as weak I was gonna say something rude then well I think it can

be used in a rude way so strong as an ox strong as steel and then we've got as weak as actually

I'm trying to think I haven't got that one here as weak as water oh yes sir that's what

I should have said yes water as weak as water so if you're describing the the strength of

something maybe a drink or may drink or maybe something that has no taste maybe it it should

have flavor yes but it doesn't you can say it's his weakest water so this is water but

let's let's pretend it's some kind of alcoholic drink and there's not much alcohol in it I

would drink it at all that's as weak as water but some more in gosh there is a rude expression

for the use the use of the simile as weak as yes I think it describes sort of as as

weak as we we is that is that what you're talking about I think excrement is comes in

there doesn't it as well yes yes okay then ih okay or is thickens yeah here's another

one Steve we'll have a couple more and then we're going to watch mr. Steve repair his

where that expression comes from probably would be very interesting to look up I'm sure

does seem very familiar you could be as fit as a dog of course yes but the sort of common

use of that simile or is it an idiom as well fit as a fiddle well it kind of is but it's

important in it in English grammar it's actually strictly described as a similar as fitted

cloth well I haven't heard that one I've not I've not heard of that one either van says

that and and so does mr. weighty I like I don't know how to pronounce your first name

Oh Amory Oh Amory I like Bella's poor as a Churchmouse yes that's a good one that's a

quite an old-fashioned expression because people that go to church are usually poor

or often can be described as that so if you're poor as a Churchmouse you really are poor

now according to Tomic Tomic says as fit as a fiddle actually comes from the shape of

a violin Oh interesting you're in good I see yes yes the curves yes of a violin that's

interesting so you're not actually going but by the sound that a violin makes but actually

its appearance which is very curvaceous like a woman's body yes it has a very feminine

curve to it I think so that's very good yes I like that one that's that's quite good actually

I like that very much so it's live English one more and then we will look at mr. Steve

changing the oil here we go happy as a clam I've heard that one before as cold as what

that's because you want me to tell you or do you want yes as cold as a cucumber oh no

no that's not right it's a cool as a cucumber that's it as cold as ice yes a person who

is as cold as ice so what does that mean Steve that's you could describe that person as frosty

as well somebody who's emotionally very thoroughly shut-in and when you approach them they don't

smile they don't they don't respond in the usual way you would expect people to respond

in social situations yes with a warm friend hello how are you they're just very cold they

don't want to talk to you very shut off so they don't have much in the way of personality

yes it could be temporary there might just be in a bad mood but usually you describe

someone as cold as ice when they're probably that is their personality all the time so

you would also describe them as frosty yes because obviously it's a bit like ice itself

we use cold just to mean something that is uncaring or that shows no sympathy a cold

good it might be could be because they're that they're very uncomfortable socially or

to use this device that we showed on Wednesday to change the oil in the lawnmower just to

prove that it's not being used for any anything else so I'll get on with it shall I mr. Duncan

so here we go now I haven't used this before I usually tip it up so the oil in this particular

machine goes in and out of this one little filler so I've got something to put the old

oil in and I've got the new oil there so let's see if this works now it's a bit messy and

I've got the gloves on because I'm sure and I haven't got the best clothes on either I

shouldn't really be changing oil in a nice shirt like this but let's have a go oh this

is exciting oh yes it's working mr. Duncan look at that so mr. Steve what is that particular

thing called this is a syringe and I'm hoping there's about 400 mil inside this lawnmower

it's proving quite difficult to pull on it well hope you don't have any accidents this

good this could be interesting all right I'm gonna get rid of some of it I think it's stuck

on something whoa let's have a go let's get rid of some of it there we go so you are basically

sucking the oil out of the lawnmower and then putting the old oil into the container that's

it this is rather fascinating I must say for those who have just tuned in you are watching

Sunday live English with mr. Steve and mr. Duncan mr. Steve at the moment is taking the

old oil out of his lawnmower contrary to what you may be thinking this is not a video about

home maintenance it's actually is it an English lesson there's quite a certainly quite a lot

of pressure to take this out you can see how dark it is so we know that

this is old oil yes it's it's almost black so how does the oil become dirty what happens

well the engine the piston is going up and down very fast in the engine and it's slowly

very slowly wearing away the the cylinder and as it does that very small particles of

metal come off very fine and this is what causes the oil to go dark of course the oil

is lubricating the engine and stopping it from seizing up I could have probably done

with a wider bore tube on here now I'm keeping it a note of hammer what what that's full

up I know I've got all the all the old oil out it's gonna take quite a while actually

there is an interesting expression in English when you describe a person as being a little

oily person who is oily maybe they are very smug or smarmy or maybe they are disingenuous

we can describe them as being a little bit oily welcome to the most scintillating video

on YouTube it's mr. Steve emptying the old oil from his lawnmower it's as exciting as

it sounds I think it's quite apt actually because this week it is the 13th birthday

of YouTube and the first ever video that was uploaded was just someone visiting the zoom

so I think it's quite fitting that this particular video or this particular livestream is going

out in the same week because this is about as interesting as visiting the zoo and looking

at some big elephants so how is it going mr. steve-o it's proving harder work than I thought

I need a tube with a with a larger bore because I need to apply a lot of oh that's always

nearing the end how do you know it's nearly finished well I can't suck any more oil and

shit so when no more oil comes out then you know that that's nearly it I could almost

hear the people on the internet right now clicking away from this live stream thinking

what are they doing what what what exactly are they doing so after you've done this Steve

you will then put some new oil in the lawnmower I will do right let's put the new oil in using

this funnel funnel but I'm gonna clean it make sure there aren't any bits of dirt that

will get into the oil and damage the engines I like the word funnel it's a fun word for

methanol so how much oil do you have to put in this engine hold about I think it's about

2 or 300 milliliters 2 or 300 milliliters we don't want to overfill it no I would imagine

too much oil is just as bad as too little yes so that's the dipstick the dipstick the

oil has to be between those two marks I love that word by the way dipstick we can use dipstick

in British English to mean a foolish person or an idiot if you think someone is an idiot

or foolish you can say oh you are such a dipstick make sure I put in the new oil in and not

the old oil yes that would be funny that would be rather funny if mr. Steve put the old oil

back into the engine that would be very funny it looks as if mr. Steve is about to finish

because he's now replacing the oil cap ok job done the old oil has been removed and

the new oil has been put in so this will now be okay for the rest of the summer and we

will now return you back to the studio dooby-dooby-doo did you enjoy that oh my goodness that was

so exciting I I can't begin to tell you how exciting that was and mr. Steve it looks it

looks as if it looks as if steve has fallen asleep oh is it finished where am i oh oh

oh the live stream right I am I I'm not sure I'm not sure Steve if you should be making

fun of it because you you are actually in the video that's true but they we did get

a couple of words out of that didn't be somebody who's oily and what was the other one a dipstick

says he who could be described as a dipstick a person who is a dipstick a person who's

a bit stupid a bit a bit a bit of an idiot always playing pranks yes well just just a

stupid person it's open post and intelligent you can say oh oh yes oh here you did such

a stupid thing there what off you you are such a dipstick yes yeah if you were to yes

mix things up the wrong way do something that should be done oh let's say for example you

you you using milk in your tea and you put it in the oven by mistake oh what a dipstick

it's actually you don't want to be described as that it's not a very nice expression I

did that the other day I actually yeah it's true Steve I actually went to put the milk

and not in the oven but I went to put it in the microwave because I thought I was putting

it in the fridge sometimes I do these strange things at the moment I mean I'm sure I'm losing

my mind a bit you know I'm sure I am so you dipstick mister don't Steve do you prefer

cuz I already know what the answer to this question is do you prefer a night in or a

night out so well I prefer a bit of both I think I wouldn't want to stay in every night

that would be a bit boring and as you know I am out at least two or three nights a week

anywhere doing various things yes I'm not you know disco dancing can we still use that

expression okay I'm not I'm not out clubbing necessarily I haven't done that for a few

years although I do want to you know I miss that I want to go out for a good night out

have a few drinks and have a good dance and you know just just let my hair down well it's

strange strange Steve because today today's international dance day is it it is actually

international dance day and I was talking about that earlier because we used to go I

remember during the early 1990s you and I used to go out every weekend we used to go

to Birmingham and we go we go to a disco didn't wouldn't we yeah we go to the clubs you know

we were young once we used to go clubbing when we were in our twenties yeah it was good

fun you know in the days when people could smoke in club so uh you know that was that

used to be do you remember that mr. Duncan we used to go go dancing and you'd absolutely

come back stinking of smoke because everyone was smoking about three-quarters of the people

in clubs used to smoke we didn't of course it's just wrong but it's it's very weird how

we just never even questioned it you'd come home and you'd be just you would stink of

smoke smoke and sometimes amyl nitrate I don't know about that mr. Duncan the other thing

is I mean do you remember I used to get so worried because I worried about these things

about the noise of the music damaging your ears because it does damage your ears it's

a bit like the Sun the more you're exposed to the Sun the more you your skin gets damaged

it's the same with noise the more you exposed to loud noise the more your ears will be damaged

so I didn't I don't want to be deaf when I'm 80 you'll have to go around with a hearing

aid so I used to get these little wax plugs which are designed for use on building sites

they're made of wax and ice to put them in my ears so it would cut out about 80% of the

volume of the of the music so let's see when I'm 80 let's see if I've still got all my

hearing no I'm not sure I said I think you're losing your your hearing now to be honest

I think you're losing your hit your hearing sturdy mr. Duncan you need to speak up that's

it yes I've noticed that so yes I think because you you like going out and sometimes you like

staying in but personally I prefer just to stay in now I like I like the feeling especially

during the winter months I don't feel like going out at night during the winter months

I like just to close the curtains and if the fire is going you have a nice little fire

in the corner of the room keeping the room warm and as there's something lovely about

closing the curtains and being all snuggly and warm during the winter months that is

true yeah there are times yes I mean I prefer to have more nights in and out we've got friends

who every I mean particularly the weekend I don't like to really go anywhere at the

weekend because you've worked hard during the week so I just like to sort of relax in

at the weekend but we've got friends who every weekend they're going somewhere to visit friends

or family or somebody's coming to visit them which it's fine you know some people like

that high level of social activity but yeah I do i I've got friends in Birmingham and

I used to go over there regularly the weekend and we used to go out for a night out I do

miss that at times but so maybe you know the summer coming I might I might sneak off on

weekend mr. Duncan and go for a nice night out somewhere that wouldn't surprise me okay

over you know I'm a few drinks you you we can say a person sometimes as a joke we might

describe a person as a dirty stop-out I don't mean a dirty stop-out well a dirty stop-out

doesn't necessarily mean something bad it just means you you might say oh I didn't get

home from the nightclub until 3 o'clock in the morning and then the person who they're

talking to might might say oh you dirty stop-out oh yes but what they're hinting at is that

they had a let's just say a liaison a sexual encounter got a casual relationship that's

what they mean by a dirty stop-out yeah I I think we get what you mean to be honest

a one-night stand today mr. Steve we're talking about something else first of all before we

go on to anything else we are talking all about emojis emojis because emojis are very

popular now lots of people like to use emojis in their day-to-day communication and so I

thought it would be fun to talk about it now one of the things that I would like to mention

first of all is that I think and this is just my opinion I think people use them too much

and quite often at the wrong time they use them inappropriately so in appropriately so

they used them at times when they probably shouldn't use them so maybe you get a message

from someone who is giving you bad news or maybe you see a post on Facebook and it's

very bad news and the person just replies by by putting a sad face or maybe a sad face

that has tears coming out or maybe sometimes even even a thumbs up which which is completely

confusing because that means they like the bad news so I think quite often we we misuse

or we just forget that sending emojis in response to maybe bad news or sad information MA might

not actually be a good way to go yes well shall we describe should we talk about the

the definition and where it comes from yes and that that will explain perhaps why there

well some people perceive them as being overused so there we go that's how you spell it emoji

or I put the s in there for the plural if it's more than one image of we're talking

about a group of emojis there actually I do grams and I'll explain that in a minute I've

got the conex got a card for that one ideograms and Smiley's used in electronic messages and

webpages we probably all know what they are but I thought I'd I define it they're designed

really as time-saving ways to express feelings or moods because quite often in a text it's

very difficult to get across exactly what you mean the full meaning the the emotion

into the text because it's very commonly you people send you text and you can very easily

miss read it because they write it in a certain way and they don't explain exactly what the

the emotion is which of course you can normally read the emotion if you're talking to somebody

face to face you can see whether they're joking or whether being serious or or whatever the

emotion is it is loaded in with that particular expression but of course on an email it's

very difficult sorry on a text it's very difficult to express that and you want it to be quick

the whole point of text is it's got to be quick so emojis have come about as a way of

very quickly getting across exactly what the emotion of the emotional content of your text

is right so it it comes from Japanese the the e comes from picture in Japanese and moji

comes from character and it started from Japanese mobile phones had these loaded into them in

around 1999 that's where it started and it's now of course part of popular culture all

over the world so the the translation is literally electric character while it comes from the

the e comes from the Japanese character meaning picture so picture so so picture character

picture cat yes it's a sort of picture character and if we look at the and I said they were

an ideogram so I used the word ideogram so what is an ideogram comes from the word idea

so an ideogram is a graphic symbol that represents an idea or concept so you can see therefore

that the emoji is something that is expressing something in this case really emotional content

of the of the text but a but that's how it started off but emojis have now that there's

a thousands of them thousands of emojis for so it's a form of communication that really

anyone in the world can recognize so you can put a smiley face on and everybody around

the world will understand what that means whatever language if you put a vegetable on

there or if you put a picture of a gun which is another popular emoji these days and everyone

knows what that means so it's just a form of expression a fast quick way of expressions

a traffic sign it is an ideogram or a pictogram which is something with a picture in so that's

really all it is and there are lots of different categories or genres of of emoji you've got

the popular I think it all started with the faces didn't it smiley face sad face yes happy

face well if you notice I've got one on my t-shirt of course every Sunday I have a giant

emoji on my on my t-shirt and you can you can see you can see also it's there as well

so emojis so yes there you go so that there is this is probably the first emoji the the

first emotional icon that was used which is just basically the smiley face and this isn't

a new thing this was around in the 1960s so 1960s 1970s then it faded away and then it

became popular again in the late 80s and 90s we have a certain type of music called acid

house music so yes so this bit became a very popular symbol and of course with the the

rise of people using the internet and computers and then of course our lives are so busy we

don't have time to send messages and reply to people anymore so we just send emojis yes

because often you get text from people don't you and they might just it might be very brief

they might just say thanks or or okay but do you don't know whether they're saying okay

or whether they're saying okay or whether they're going yeah you don't know what the

emotion is so often you can miss read it and then you can start worrying all what to that

person you know did I say some did I offend them and then you reply back something but

if you were okay and then smiley face or I mean lol's a common one to put lots of last

but but now there are thousands and thousands there are different categories so you can

have ones for whether you can have ones with animals on them all sorts of things they also

vary a lot between different platforms so like Apple and Google Facebook different mobile

phone companies their emojis may all actually slightly differ but there is an emoji code

there are approved emojis and lists of them so it become quite a quite a big quite a big

well I would say business probably going too far breeds become quite a a huge area to talk

about but yeah we I've got people at work who every time they send any kind of message

will always put emojis on some people don't use any other people what about 6:00 on after

every text they send and I got one from somebody the other day because I know somebody who

is working in Canada and of course there was that horrific terrorist incident in Canada

last week and I asked somebody who knows them are they all right and they texted back to

me and said yes they're fine terrible incident and then after it they put like a downturned

face which I thought was a little inappropriate bearing in mind the the the gravity of that

of that particular situation so yes they can often be used in the wrong way yes sort of

inappropriately greatly yes I think so I think you know I think it happens more commonly

than we actually even realize like so ago yes I was looking for that's it I was just

showing some on the screen as well as some examples these are popular emojis here's one

here that people use a lot at work is the thumbs up sign so if you look there on the

screen now there are lots of you've got the let's have a look at the top you so you got

like the smiley face but it looks like the person is laughing slightly we could try to

guess what these actually mean then yes they're not numbered so we'll just go from the top

from the top from left to right is that sound good yeah so slightly smiling smiley face

smiling but not smiling a lot slightly embarrassed I think the other one is the next one to that

slightly annoyed slightly sad and then we have the person crying and then the person

next to that is it's like that sweating laughing so much that they're actually perspiring they're

sweating yes the next one surprised not sure what that is yes surprise the next one is

maybe dizzy or really really not confused but they are so happy they are dizzy with

happiness the next one is just the next one I think is a minion a minion dunno what that

I'm not going to name all of these we might be here until 6 o'clock tonight if we did

that well they've all got specific names they do actually have specific names and I think

that is now the problem when there were only about a dozen it was obvious what they meant

but if you look at those just for the just expressions of the human face a lot of those

you would have trouble actually interpreting what they really meant so because there are

so many now it's it's very difficult to you know what does that really mean plus if it's

in a text they're quite small you can't often see see them you can see the smiley face that's

obvious you can see the sad face the thumbs up but some of them now are so vague you can't

really understand what what they are trying to say to you yes I was I was going to say

and and sort of them of course don't make any sense of whatsoever it's just like you've

got sort of emojis that are just like fruit like a melon or or an apple or a banana so

some of them don't even seem to have any obvious use but you mentioned earlier that the one

that's like a gun and did you know now if you send that to someone it can be seen as

being offensive or you or as a threat exactly so so if you use the gun emoji you have to

be careful how you use that because it might be taken as a threat and of course the other

one is a knife as well mmm so yes you have to be careful what you put in your messages

because it is so easy to be misunderstood don't you think you'd put that you could put

the gun sign and then after it's smiley face so to show that you weren't being serious

but maybe they're happy because they're coming around to use a gun on you well there we go

you see and the emojis now are being misunderstood rooms the whole point of having them in the

first place that you would help to give context to the message that you were sending to somebody

yes so I want to say it's lazy it's lazy communication it's it's just like oh you're having a busy

day and you just go oh I'll just send a smiley face and you're not really even reading the

message you're just acknowledging the message by just sending a smiley face or a little

puppy dog or a cat with a little pink bow or you're just gonna send that and maybe the

person has just told you that their their whole family has been killed in a car accident

and you're sending a smiley face back I don't think you know you'd have to be pretty or

a thumbs-up you'd have to be either to be very nasty to do something like that or you

go oh your dog is oh so my dog has just oh my dog has just oh let me just let me just

send a smiley face and a couple of thumbs up you know and then the person receives in

that they were telling you that their dog has just died and you've sent them a smiley

face and in two thumbs up but you wouldn't do that would you might do it by accident

or by accident you might be you might hit the wrong button you might mistake one for

another yes yes that's how your site but yeah yes so so it came out her live chat say mr.

face looks like it's been damaged in the washing machine I think that is is that just the style

of that particular t-shirt believe it or not this is actually how I bought this t-shirt

this is actually how it looked so so the idea is it looks as if it's been damaged or faded

in the washing line but this is actually how I bought it this is actually the appearance

of it originally so it's a bit like bear buying a pair of jeans that are that have been deliberately

had hold put in them or faded on patches on the on the thighs or the knees yes so in other

words it's deliberately designed to look like it's worn it's what you're saying that's it

well can you believe that some people buy jeans brand new jeans they will pay sixty

or seventy pounds for a pair of jeans that that have holes in them and yes I know and

a worn they're all damaged and they have holes in them and they spend about 70 pounds on

a pair of jeans that that have fallen to pieces and that's what they look like when they are

new because they call it stressed stressed that's it clothes stressed closes stressed

jeans so you're wearing a stressed t-shirt which is designed to look like it's it's it's

old yes so this particular t-shirt has been has been stressed yes you're right this particular

t-shirt has been made to look as if it's actually worn yeah which it does it certainly does

it certainly gives the impression we didn't have any mystery idioms today but they are

similes go on then because we're talking about similes a simile is a figure of speech here's

another one Steve as tough as we could should we see what the live-chat comes up with as

well let's have already tell us tough as Buddhists oh I was gonna get the live chat up as tough

as yeah there's another one but don't say it don't say it let's have a look shall we

so as tough as what apparently Louis says people these days have a lot of money and

they change their clothes every single day well not me most of my clothing is very old

I mean this this t-shirt my smiley t-shirt this one is ten years old I've had this t-shirt

Bella Bella has got it right you can also say as hard as nails yes as tough as nails

or as hard as nails as hard as nails a person who has no emotion or might be a person who

is very strong and they don't they don't break their emotion very easily they don't cry easily

you might describe them as being as hard as nails or of course as tough as nails that's

good that's good one yes there are quite a few actually let's have one more and then

we are going we are gonna go in about three or four minutes mr. Steve can you see it as

bright as let's see if anyone else comes up with it with with anything first as bright

as thank you says why why is tough as nails well because nails are tough nails are very

tough you can you can hit them they can they can be hit and knocked into pieces Rambow

you could say that but that's not a common one that's used as toughest rambo as bright

answer to that that particular phrase but what does it mean it just means somebody who's

we're doing is giving the common version of what would be used well Bella has got it right

as she as full as an egg oh it's full as an egg yes a horse as full as an egg there it

is yes a great expression as full as an egg if you have eaten a lot of food and someone

might say would you like some more you might reply oh no I'm is full as an egg it means

I can't eat anything else nothing else at all maybe that's because an egg within an

eggshell you can't get anything more in that egg shell only the egg that's inside so if

you're that fall you couldn't put anything else in I think that's where that probably
