That feeling of excitement is something we often experience when we are waiting for something to happen.

It is a feeling of both excitement and sometimes anxiety.

Something you are waiting for that still hasn't yet occurred.

A moment of time that you have been waiting for.

This particular feeling has a name.

We often refer to it as ‘anticipation’.

The feeling of anticipation is a common one.

The word ‘anticipation’ refers to the state of excitement that is felt during the period of waiting for something to happen.

This feeling can be both positive or negative, depending on the situation taking place.

You are waiting for something to happen.

You might be excited.

You might feel concerned.

The feeling you have might even be a mixture of both.

You might experience anticipation leading up to a moment of time that can be described as ‘decisive’ or ‘life changing’.

Perhaps you are about to go off to work on the day you begin a new job.

You might feel anticipation before leaving the house.

You are very aware that this moment is significant.

It is an important moment of time.

That feeling of anticipation is a strong emotion.

The word anticipation is a noun that names the state of excitement felt before an event.

Something that is coming up might cause you to feel anticipation.

Perhaps you go to a friend's house and they are preparing a meal in the kitchen.

You can smell the food cooking from the next room.

It smells delicious.

You feel excited about the meal that is going to be served.

That feeling is anticipation.

The verb form of anticipation is ‘anticipate’.

To anticipate something is to show excitement or expectation of an upcoming moment of time.

You might anticipate your friend's arrival at the train station whilst you are waiting for them.

You are waiting for that moment to occur.

You anticipate that.

The feeling you have during that moment is anticipation.

We sometimes describe anticipation as butterflies in the stomach.

The emotional response to anticipation can have a very strong effect on one's emotions.

It is possible to recognise anticipation in another person.

You can see their excitement.

You feel their emotion.

You can see that they are anticipating that particular thing.

As I've already mentioned, anticipation can involve something pleasant or something that might cause problems in the future.

The thing you are about to do might go well, or it might not.

In that moment of anticipation. You know something is about to happen,

but you are unsure of what the outcome will be.

The period of anticipation can vary in length.

You might have to wait a whole year for something to happen, or that thing might be occurring in just a few minutes from now.

However long you have to wait. The feeling is normally similar.

‘expectation’ ‘prediction’ ‘foretaste’ or ‘prospect’.

The expectation and the feelings that are connected to that moment,

be they of excitement or nervousness is anticipation.

You know that thing is about to happen and you feel anticipation because of it.
