LIVE ENGLISH LISTENING - 22nd August 2018 - Late and Live lesson - Mr Duncan & Mr Steve

so here we go again another Wednesday night has arrived

coming up on tonight's live stream mr. Steve will be here showing us something

that he's never showed anyone on the livestream before and of course I will

be showing something to you as well the same rules apply something I have

never shown on the live stream also we'll be talking about our new feature

on the live stream our live subtitles we are going to test them out tonight to

see how well they work and of course you are more than welcome to join in on the

live chat and you can join us also on our lovely country sidewalk that we are

taking at the moment after all it's Wednesday night it's just after

10 o'clock here in the UK and this is late and live English

it most certainly is late and live English here we go again

and I'm hoping that we have some success tonight with the live subtitles even

though I have a horrible feeling that they're not working properly already

even now I know that this isn't going to work out so so that was quick wasn't it

we are now live in the studio mr. Steve will be coming later on and it looks as

if mr. Steve wants a lovely big kiss oh I wonder why I wonder what that's all

about so here we go it is a Wednesday night I hope you are well and happy and

I hope you are ready for some English hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England

how are you today are you ok I hope so are you happy well are you happy I hope

so I am feeling very exhausted at the

moment because we've had a very busy day we went for a big walk you may have seen

the live stream earlier we did a live stream this afternoon during our walk

and to be honest with you I'm a little bit tired my legs are aching everything

feels very very sore let's see if these live subtitles are working this is

something that I've been working on for the last couple of days something that

I've been trying to get working now I'm going to try it one more time this is

something that I've put on my computer and I was trying to be clever but it

looks as if my plan has not turned out because look it's coming up in a

different language I don't know why I want English please give me English I

don't know why the language is coming up in the wrong language but this

is something that I am trying to sort out this is a piece of software that

I've been trying to get to work in fact it looks as if it's trying to work but

it's not doing very well so there that was quick

that was a very quick test of maybe the most useless piece of software in the

world so that was very short-lived so here we go it is Wednesday night and as

I said I feel so tired tonight I have no energy I really did feel like going to

bed and Steve is complaining as well because he's he's got a bad eye did you

see the live stream this afternoon so poor mr. Steve has an eye infection

so his eye is all swollen it doesn't look very good at all so poor mr. Steve

is in the wars when we say that someone is in the walls it means that they are

suffering they are suffering with something or from something so poor mr.

Steve at the moment is somewhat in the wars so I hope you are well and wow we

have so many things to show you first of all this week we found something in the

garden something very unusual hidden away in the corner of the garden we

discovered that there is a beehive or bee nest so you can say bee hive which

is where the bees set up their home and you can also say a bees nest will be

nest so there it is in my garden lots and lots of bees flying out and flying

in now these particular bees are worker bees they are collecting the nectar from

the nearby flowers which we will take a look at it

moment so you can see that there are many many bees now the thing with bees

is they are quite tame they will only sting you if they see that you are a

threat so if they think that you are a threat of some sort they will probably

sting you but bees don't like to sting people because quite often if a bee

stings a person they do risk damaging their own bodies so that's the reason

why bees will not sting a person unless it's absolutely necessary so that's why

wasps will sting people more readily in fact a couple of weeks ago I got stung

by a wasp a wasp decided to sting me and that wasn't much fun I can tell you so

the WASC the wasp sting left a big mark on my arm it wasn't very nice really to

be honest and it was very painful and now you can see the bees are on one of

the flowers in the garden and they are collecting all of the pollen you can see

that they are actually carrying the pollen in tiny sacks on their legs so

there you can see they are gathering all of the pollen and then they take that

back to the nest and then of course it will be turned into delicious lovely I

mean so maybe in about a month's time I might I might have a look under there to

see if there is any honey that we can gather so I hope you enjoyed that

something unusual there is always something going on in my garden I'll be

honest with you there is always something taking place also we have some

flowers coming out at the moment as well besides the bees on the flowers we also

have some other flowers coming out as well

can you see this beautiful flower this is a Japanese

anenome and you can see that the flowers are

looking lovely gorgeous in pink they come out very late in the season and

they will stay in flower until the end of October so normally these flowers

will last for a very long time and they are one of my most favorite flowers

I love the Japanese and enemy I think they are very colorful very vibrant and

they also attract lots and lots of insects so that's another reason why I

like to have lots of flowers in the garden it attracts the insects the

butterflies the wasps the bees and lots of tiny flies as well you can see there

are lots of very small insects on that particular flower so there little look

in the garden I know that we like to look at the nature and today is no

exception of course I am forgetting one thing what am I forgetting

of course I'm forgetting the live-chat how can I forget the live-chat I can't

believe that I've done that so let's have a quick look at the live chat shall

well to be honest generally they can they can mean the

same thing something that is within is often contained inside so we describe

within to be something that is contained inside so by definition inside has the

same meaning so they can be used instead of each other how is mr. Steve now will

he be your sidekick tonight yes mr. Steve will be here but he's feeling very

fragile to be honest he's feeling very delicate because he's had a very busy

day we were walking around we had a big walk we had a lovely meal and also we

hi everybody and welcome to mr. Duncan's full English number five I thought I

would start off today's edition with a selfie just in case you're watching this

in 2050 and you don't know what to sell for years I'm not going to tell you and

you won't be able to ask me in person because I'm dead oh there you are

my name is mr. Duncan and I'm ever so pleased to meet you we are all here

again to take a peek into that wonderful world of English so let us all join

hands and say the magic words for goodness sake mr. Duncan we haven't got

all day get on with it

can you see what sort of weather we're having here today well there is poor

visibility for a start it isn't a clear day by any means it is a foggy day here

in England we can use foggy as an idiom to describe the inability to remember

something we can say I haven't the foggiest idea which means you do not

remember or you cannot recall a certain event or a piece of information

today's fog has been caused by warm and cold air colliding with each other

this fog is made up of tiny particles of moisture you often see fog forming in

the early morning or evening or as the temperature changes the subject of

weather is a fascinating one and for the typical English person such as myself it

is a subject that is often discussed in general day-to-day conversation the two

words shown here may look similar but they are in fact very different the

words perspective and prospective are often confused that is to say one is

used instead of the other first of all the word perspective defines the way in

which things are seen how an object appears depending on its size shape and

relative distance from other things around it in drawing and painting

perspective is used to give the illusion of depth and distance we can also use

this word to express a person's view of the world as their point of view a

person's perspective of the world the views and opinions held by us all come

from our own perspective

then there is the word prospective which means something that is expected or is

expecting to be done in the future something that is likely to happen at a

later date is prospective I have a prospective client coming to my office

tomorrow so now there is no need to get these words confused ever again I have

given you a clearer perspective of what the differences are I have done this for

you now and for all the prospective online students who will join me in the

future can you see what I have here this is a saucepan full of boiling water the

hot water is producing steam steam is produced when water vaporizes normally

water vapor cannot be seen but it is possible to show it when extreme

temperatures are used for example when hot vapor meets cool air this is one of

the ways in which clouds are formed the process is called

evaporation the word steam can be used in other ways for example a person can

let off steam this expression means that a person will release their tension and

pent up energy by doing something the action is normally a physical one such

as going for a run having a dance or in

extreme cases screaming out loud it would prefer to say that we all need to

let off steam at some point it's time to take a look at another part of English

grammar continuing the theme of punctuation that we started in the last

fall English today we will take a look at the dreaded apostrophe this

particular punctuation mark is a controversial one as its use has been

widely disputed over the years even now there seems to be some confusion over

how it should be used in general English the apostrophe serves two purposes to

show the possessive quality of something and to show that a word has been

shortened or a sentence has been made shorter in the possessive sense the

apostrophe shows that one thing belongs to another for example Duncan's pen

jill's pencil st. Paul's Cathedral the apostrophe can come at the end of the

possessive word for example the teacher's college is over there a

commonly confused use of the apostrophe comes with the word

it's the apostrophe here shows the contraction of it is it's my birthday

today when the apostrophe is not used then the

possessive tense is being expressed a mouse has no fur on its tail another

common mistake made with the apostrophe is to use it to show the plural of

ordinary words this is incorrect once again the apostrophe is only used

when you wish to show a possessive clause or the contraction

I was standing here but of course it was Sunday and now it's Wednesday and of

course we were out and about today during the livestream

we were on a lovely walk weren't we we were it was it was delightful because I

didn't feel very well yesterday we were going to do it yesterday but of course

because of my nasty eye yes then we've we stayed in yesterday I was trying to

get Steve to agree to have my camera here in the studio zoom right in on his

eye he was feeling very very self-conscious so I thought I said no

okay then but we had a lovely day to day we went to a very nice place and there

we can see some shots so we went to a place called Church Stretton

which is about 40 minutes away from where we live not not not that far away

is it no 40 minutes it's probably not even that far mr. Duncan I would say

probably 30 minutes okay but we had a had a lovely time and a nice walk and it

wasn't too sunny so we didn't have to put Sun cream on no I still had my hat

on and there we are those me walking through the woods there Steve looking

very looking various I hope you very distant Steve's walking off into the

distance but look it's a beautiful place and the it's very close to another very

well known area called the long and yes which is a sort of a series of

quite high hills part of the structure Hills group of Hills Hills and there I

am leaning on a on a railing yes I think we can see that trying to to look

interested and you of course filmed everything in sight how'd you do mr.

Duncan yes I walk on ahead and then I think where's mr. Duncan you know you're

taking all of the fun out of this walking this is something we've done

today and my legs are really tired I was saying earlier that I'd I don't

actually feel like doing this tonight I was I was so tired my legs are aching

now I was thinking want one evening if we if we have a busy day Steve what I

was thinking of doing we could we could actually just do it sort of sitting down

on the sofa or or maybe we could get some little beds and we can lie down and

actually do the livestream whilst whilst lying down but oh look at the view and

this is what we had to eat we had a nice meal but we also had a cake as well and

there I am eating a Chelsea burn Chelsea burn we talked about that yet well we

talked about that this afternoon for those who who watch the livestream oh

that's right so in case you didn't that is a particular type of cake it's one of

my favorites it's a rolled-up bread dough with the currants and raisins in

the middle and some cinnamon and then you bake it in the oven I put a put a

glaze a sugar glaze on top and that's one of my favorites then there you are

eating a rocky road it is rocky road and that is absolutely delicious it's full

of chocolate and marshmallow and biscuit and chocolate and marshmallow and

biscuit oh it's just everything and the bag it's very its high in fat isn't it

that particular oh my goodness oh that the bag was dripping with grease

dripping with grease because its base just fat it was just a big block of fat

basically with biscuits stuffed in the middle but but I needed my energy look

there it is isn't that lovely look at that mmm I

want to take a bite out of the screen it was very well I had a bit of it it

gave me indigestion oh that's a shame oh sure we want to know that yes and there

that obviously been a fire yes we noticed that part of the walk a lot of

the a lot of the bushes were actually burnt so it looks like they had a big

fire here it does I I think that was I think they were gorse bushes which is a

type of sort of bush with spines on it oh you wouldn't want to walk through it

no and that was in there the rectory would now rectory of course is where er

where a priest lives or the vicar at so the Church of the local church so

normally the place where that where the vicar will live they call it the rectory

the rectory First Church of England isn't it of course we're talking about

here yeah I guess so and this is that this is a walk that's laughs it's very

me it's very near it's very near to one of the the churches there's not not very

far away from here so yeah a church Stretton if you ever come to the UK

because we had someone earlier Steve who said that they were actually coming to

the UK yes to live did you see it Oh to live no I haven't been watching because

I was on the phone to my mother oh I came on live telling her about my Paulie

I oh so what did your mum suggest have it removed yes just go to the doctors

and out there put some leeches on it and they will suck the infection out mmm I

don't like the sound of that mr. Duncan is that what you mean she thought I'd

got it because I've been feeding the cows on the back field and I hadn't

washed my hands and rubbed my eyes but it wasn't that no the garden I don't

that you got it from the cow I think something went into your eye and then

it's obviously become sort of very dirty under the arms

your fists you keep telling people but I look at can we just clear this up once

and for all I didn't I didn't punch Steve it's very

tempting sometimes very tempting but I didn't I didn't punch

I didn't pinch Steve at all yeah out of violent man are you

as I said earlier as I said on the livestream today when we were out

walking I never leave any marks no not really I like I like your shirt by the

way it's old thing I just threw it on it's very good

shall we have a look at something else it happened today because it did start

raining didn't it it did start to rain in fact there were a couple walking

ahead of us while they were behind us and then they were we let them by and

going up this hill towards the summit of the long wind the summit the top and

they suddenly turned back and it was starting to rain and they wanted to get

back before they got wet like the rain didn't turn out to be that bad but

nevertheless I thought I should protect myself against the rain so what mr.

Steve did he went into his bag and he found something very useful

there is mr. Steve going off up the hill wearing his big plastic bag

yes it is live and what we are trying to do tonight I've been trying to get

something working I've got I've got some new software but it was a complete

disaster Steve oh dear a complete disaster

so I'm going to try it one more time now I tried to put this on the screen but

but all of the words that were coming up just didn't make any sense and then

someone said Mr Duncan it looks like Spanish so we will try one more time

here it is oh okay it still appears to be Spanish I hello

how bizarre it's very strange why is it coming up in Spanish mr.

Duncan I don't know it doesn't even make any sense

technology I told you before mr. Duncan do not rely on technology but anyway

back to the rain poncho this is quite fascinating though I'm I'm quite

fascinated to see what this does on the screen because it doesn't make any sense

I've got that poncho here mr. Duncan oh okay mr. Stephens mr. Steeves got the

poncho the rain poncho in fact we showed this in when we wrote went too late

Verne we didn't we we went to Lake Verne we and we had these in the bag we have

these in the bag just in case it rains just in case but it didn't but today it

did and I put it on and we thought we'd make a little funny video why don't you

put it on it you won't you put it on now I'm a bit hot so it comes in this little

bag and obviously it's got a resealable top so the idea is you can actually the

idea is you can actually fold this up and put it back in the back yes however

well let's have a go however there is a problem I'm sure we can do it mr. Duncan

I've got to get this this into this bag yes I think they get it right they it

can't be that difficult listen are you going

tests I know I only started testing it today so I think I should have waited

tough as he goes along the side of some railings with a large stick

that's it that's it I thought it was well ten seconds I was

amazingness that was amazing that's like Rockford well it is actually for that

poncho but when the poncho was in the bag too big to start off with it was

folded very neatly and very tightly hmm so I think it would be virtually

impossible to get it back in there hmm see Gretel says I have to have a round

of applause Oh Manila is DC is says good night oh no

good night there but she said good night okay well done so Kara gestured it's

Spanish oh I see there's Fernando says earlier today I spotted in the window of

the local bakery what they call an English pudding oh okay

I'd like to take a picture to send to you but sadly I haven't I didn't have my

mobile phone with me English pudding I don't know what that could be

there's no such thing here called English pudding

we don't have English pudding so I'm intrigued I'm very intrigued so if you

see it again Fernando take a picture send it to me and maybe we will be able

to identify it exactly using ah our twin brains we will

put our brains together to make one complete super brain and then maybe we

can work out what it is ah look Carrodus just at the top there

has given some some good advice on how to treat my bad eye a magic cure put on

a warm come compress okay with camera arty which of course is what was

recommended on the NHS of website what are you using an old sock well I was

using an old when it was a clean sock Steve was using an old sock he was

soaking the sock it's an old sport sock

and then he soaked it in warm water and put it on his eye well I haven't got a

flannel I haven't got a proper there's a cloth I'm not sure if a song anyway I

think it was making it worse the doctor told me not to do that despite the

advice on the NHS website which is our health service here their website says

if you get a bad eye like this put a warm towel on it with hot water but the

doctor said don't do that if anything you should put cold water on it's okay

the opposite the opposite but anyway there we go everyone's got their own

ideas but I I thought it was working hmm raybert from Kurdistan is here says hi

I used to put little lollipop sticks on my bicycle and then when he rode the

bike the lollipop stick would rattle on the spokes of the wheel oh yes what does

snuck in set in the live stream okay when did you do that did I I don't know

for your live subtitles I will try although having said that there are live

subtitles on YouTube but I was just playing with something today because I

noticed it and I thought I would try and use it but it would appear that it

doesn't really work because whenever I put it on the screen it makes no sense

Fernando is going to send us the picture of that English pudding oh yes I can't

wait to see that Louis Lewis Mendes said that he used to

annoy somebody like I did on the on the the railings oh you the same thing to

annoy somebody and that's where that's what people used to do at school

yeah it is to go all the way along side the the railings with a big stick making

this loud noise to annoy everybody yes and suddenly I must have done that when

lot cheaper than normal so when I see these offers I buy them because you know

you know I wouldn't I wonder why this is going to come to an end soon what the

to the back and until clean get all the poo off you use one or two and ryx wash

let's pat dry with toilet tissue pat dry host of a friend at school called pat

dry so can you actually believe that steve that's just because i can't

believe that this is something that is real i can't it's actually telling you

how to wipe your bottom on the back of this packet of toilet paper

if you you would think that if you are you're intelligent enough to be an evil

you've actually got to the point in your life when you've got enough money you've

got a job you've got enough money to be able to go to the supermarket and buy

your own toilet paper yes then you think you wouldn't need to be told how to use

you think by now that you would all know how to do that who is buying toilet

paper thinking oh how do I use that this is very complicated how do I use it

I wish there are instructions on the back of this to tell me how to use this

because I I was I was actually putting it in my ears I I thought this was to go

into your ears but apparently on the back here it says that that you actually

wipe your bottom with it so that's amazing so really amazing thank you very

toilet paper because what they're really trying to do didn't notice that they're

they're trying to get you to buy a second product oh yes they're trying to

get you to buy some wipes because they're saying that toilet paper

they're actually saying that their their basic product is no good

exactly you can't have that you've got to also have some washlets yes so

those are those are washlets so I think they're just wet wipe set probably

what we would call wet wipes but but it is we found that very humorous yes I

and whatever country you are living in please go and look at your toilet paper

packing I think this is only in the UK see if it tells you on the back

howdy because what we want to know is how do you use toilet paper in different

countries is it different what we have to how you would use it in this clip

shocked I was so shocked because I dreamt that Steve had this thing in his

hand and it's random I could I couldn't have known that he would have chosen

that so Steve is going to show you something that he's never shown before

on a live stream why am i sharing it again I've just said it's something that

it's a sort of a right elephants are quite rare so when you see them there

does the king of Thailand still have white elephants because it's a sign of

good luck I might be wrong there but I look like a PDA told me that the king of

Burma still has a white elephant and so today in fact I think he's got five and

I think the Asian elephant is slightly smaller and the African elephant is a

elephant after it was first built it cost a fortune to build and hardly any

companies wanted to move into it and it was many decades apparently before it

had full occupancy as they say and so it was described at the time as a white

is seen as useless or something that seems like a huge waste of money can be
