Do you ever have good ideas?

Do you ever have something that pops up in your brain or something you think about?

Something you suddenly think, hmm,

that's a good idea.

And that's what we're talking about today.

Also,

yesterday was an anniversary for me.

15 years ago yesterday

I returned to the UK from China.

I stepped foot back in the UK.

On yesterday's date,

which of course was the 8th of February.

2007 was when it happened.

So 15 years ago. Can you believe it?

So I've now been back in the UK after my adventures

in China for 15 years.

I've been here and this year of course it will

be my 16th anniversary on YouTube.

So a lot of things

happening.

15 years ago I was still adjusting to being back in England.

And I have to be honest with you, it took me a very long time

to get used to the idea

to get used to actually living in the UK again.

It did feel strange and it took me a long time to adjust

If you adjust it means you are changing or you are changing yourself

in a certain way to suit the environment.

Around you, to adjust something,

to make a slight change to something you adjust

So it did take me quite a quite a long time.

I think it took me around five years

to actually become comfortable

living back in the UK because the lifestyle here

is very different from that in China.

Anyway, here we are and of course

we have made it all the way to the middle.

It is the middle of the week, by the way, for those who aren't sure

it is the middle of the week, we have made it this far

without blowing ourselves up.

what it looks like when you are watching my live stream.

I like to think of myself as a practical person.

I'm a person that can try something

when when we say practical, we mean something.

You actually do.

For example, when I first moved here to this house,

there was a lot of work that needed doing in the house.

Lots of things that had to be done.

So because of my background, many many years ago,

I trained to become a painter and decorator.

Not many people know this. I have mentioned it before.

But in my very early years, I actually trained to be a painter and decorator.

And I did do that particular job for a short time before I moved on to something else,

something less messy, let's just say.

But I thought today it would be interesting to show

a couple of videos of me

actually doing some practical work, because normally you just see me

standing here like this, doing very little.

I'm just standing here talking to you.

So I thought it would be interesting to have a look at a couple of video clips

where I'm actually doing something practical.

You can say it's like watching paint dry

because, of course, paint takes a long time to dry

and it's very boring to watch.

So not only am I decorating today,

I'm also teaching you a little bit of English as well.

And can I just say it took a long time

to get everything sorted

You wouldn't believe how much work

is involved in setting up your own studio.

Not just the equipment, not just the camera, not just the lights.

There's lots of other things you have to consider as well

as I found out.

Yes. It is a bulldog called Simon.

That is Sandra's dog.

Sandra Gonzalez yes.

Her dog is called Simon, and it is a bulldog.

They are actually quite lovely dogs.

I think they're actually quite friendly.

Sometimes certain dogs

have a type of character

and some people quite often miss understand

the character of a particular dog.

And I think bulldogs sometimes

get some unfair comments made about them.

But actually Bulldogs are quite friendly, they're quite lovely,

even though sometimes they can dribble.

That's one of the things I really did a few years ago when I met one of my friends

who had a bulldog and and when I went up to it to stroke it,

it was dribbling from its mouth.

Lots of dribble and spit was coming out of its mouth.

to repair this watch.

I was going to replace the battery and also replace the strap as well.

The wrist strap and I did.

And now it works.

So this watch, which I've owned

since 1997 or 1998,

I think it was actually 1998 when I bought this, when in fact

I didn't buy this. Mr.

Steve gave this for my birthday way back in 1998.

So I've had this watch for quite a long time

and I decided to repair it

and I put a new battery inside

and I also put a new strap on the watch as well.

So now it looks almost brand new

even though it is around

20, maybe 22 23 years old.

So I've had this watch for a very long time and now it is working perfectly.

So another one of my little skills

apparently

repairing watches.

I might set up my own business.

I've just finished my studio, and now I'm starting to decorate it.

the walls are fairly flat and quite clean.

But I don't like the wallpaper.

The wallpaper is not to my taste.

so today I'm doing a bit of stripping.

Yes, I'm stripping in my bedroom.

How what did you think I meant?

I'm stripping the walls.

So here we go.

Now, the good thing about this wallpaper is that it has two layers.

It has the outer layer, which is shiny

and smooth and an underlay

so you can take the outer layer off

very easily just by peeling it.

So watch.

Hopefully this will work.

If it doesn't work, I'm going to be very embarrassed.

When you have a certain skill if you have an ability to do something,

you often find that other people want you to do it for them as well.

phone numbers in the watch.

So where are you back in the late 1990s,

this particular watch was quite sophisticated.

people have one of these, don't they?

So nowadays people use their, their mobile phone

Yes, most people's telephones

have a calculator as well.

So I suppose you might say that this has been replaced

by this thing, this particular device.

I think it's fair to say but way back in 1998

this was, this was very sophisticated.

There were no iPhones around, there wasn't really

anything like that to be honest.

So, so this watch was really sophisticated.

Who says the way you teach English is the best idea ever?

One of the things that I always find interesting about doing

this is coming up with new ideas, new things to talk about.

Someone once said, I won't say who, but someone once said, Mr.

Duncan, it would appear that you can talk about anything

for a long period of time.

You can stand in front of a camera and just talk and talk.

And sometimes you talk about nothing,

but still you make it interesting

but yes, sometimes it is difficult

to come up with new ideas, new things.

However, I often find that my ideas will pop in my head

during moments when I'm relaxing or doing something

that does not concern my work for example,

if I am outside walking

quite often I will have lots of good ideas.

So I'm walking along the street or I'm walking through a field

enjoying the scenery, and then suddenly

I have an idea.

I have a good idea about something, something that

I think would be a good subject to talk about,

or maybe something interesting to discuss on the live stream.

come when I'm doing something different.

Doing something else.

If my mind is rested,

if I'm doing something that makes me feel relaxed,

as I said a few moments ago, such as walking, having a lovely walk.

Your mind starts to wonder

you can expand your thoughts.

And quite often I will have lots of ideas when I'm walking around

which leads me very nicely

to today's topic, which is ideas.

The words and phrases connected to ideas,

having ideas, having thoughts,

something useful that pops

into your brain, an idea.

So we are going to look at some words and phrases

and hear

is the first sentence connected to ideas?

Well, when we have an idea or when we need to create an idea,

we often say that we need to come up

with new ideas so quite often

if you are working in a certain type of job

that is creative, then your brain

has to be able to come up with new ideas all the time.

So if you are coming up with new ideas,

it means your brain is creating new ideas, new things

that you can do, new things that you can try,

something new that you can create.

You are coming up with new ideas.

We can say that you put your thinking cap on.

So if a person is putting their thinking cap

on, it means they are

going to think that they are going to consider.

They are going to try and come up with an idea,

something that needs to be solved.

So so ideas can be used in many different ways.

An idea can be a way of doing something,

a way of solving a problem,

something that you can't solve a difficult situation.

So quite often you will have to think

you will have to try and work out how to solve the problem.

You will have to put your thinking cap on

and as you can see today I have my English addict

thinking cap

it doesn't always work, but sometimes it does.

Another way of coming up with ideas is to get

the old grey matter working.

And when we say grey matter, we mean your brain.

After all, that is where all of the ideas come.

That is where all of your ideas appear up here in the brain.

And even now, scientists don't really understand

how we are able to come up with ideas.

How does the brain work when it's coming up with something

that might not exist?

How is that possible?

I'm always fascinated by people who are able to write songs or music,

so the music somehow

is created, appear in their brain.

But how do they do it?

How are they able to do it?

I think it is a natural ability.

So as something that was always there, and I believe

that everyone every person on the planet

has some sort of natural ability up here.

Some think they are able to think about or consider

or maybe something they are able to create.

So I think everyone everyone has something up here

that they can create or use.

So the old grey

matter, you have to think carefully.

You have to get the old grey matter working

to come up with your new ideas.

Maybe you are in a group, maybe at work you have a group of people together.

You might have to put your heads together.

You might have to work together to come up with an idea.

So sometimes, especially in business, you might find that

there will be more than one person, maybe two or three people

or maybe a large group of people will try to come up

with some new ideas.

You have to put your heads together.

It means you are trying to combine

all of your brain power to come up with something new

or something original.

If you brainstorm something.

So this is an action.

This is actually an action we are talking about here.

Brain storm.

So if you brainstorm something,

it means you are discussing a topic or maybe a project

something you have to achieve, something you have to create, you brainstorm.

So lots of people will sit down together and they will try to come up with new ideas.

You brainstorm.

So you are using this as a verb,

as a verb, you are brainstorming,

you are trying to create new ideas.

And quite often it's not easy to do

it might seem easy.

It might appear to be an easy thing.

But let me tell you now, it is not

Here's another one.

Wrack your brain.

If you rack your brains,

it means you are thinking really carefully.

Sometimes it's so hard to think.

Sometimes you have to sit down and you have to concentrate.

Maybe you have to think for many, many hours

to come up with a new idea.

So if you rack your brains, it means you are using them.

You are using those brain cells,

you are trying to find a new idea.

You are trying to come up with a new idea or maybe a new creation. Oh,

fancy.

If you suddenly have an idea,

we can say that you have a brain wave.

If you have a brain wave,

it means suddenly you think of something new,

a new idea, a new plan.

I have a brainwave

you think of something new.

You create something in your mind

that has never existed before.

A good idea can be described as a brainwave

you might have a light bulb moment, as you can see here.

Can you see my little light bulb

Quite often we will show an idea

in the form of a light bulb.

Maybe something suddenly appears in your head.

It's as if a small light has suddenly turned on.

You have a moment of inspiration

something in your mind suddenly

turns on like a light.

So we often say that a person will have a light bulb moment,

a moment of inspiration,

a moment where they suddenly think of something, something new

We often describe an idea as a spark.

A small spark

can ignite a big idea.

So something that starts off small,

a small idea, a small thought,

something you've created in your mind that seems small,

can sometimes lead to big things happening.

So we often describe an idea as a spark.

Imagine a small spark

going off in your brain and that is a good way

of describing a moment of thought

and a moment of coming up with a new idea, which I think is brilliant.

Or a good idea can be described

as a spark of genius.

I love that word.

Genius.

A spark

of genius can be used to describe a good idea.

That's a brilliant idea.

That is a spark of genius.

You had a spark of genius.

Something happened in your brain that made you come up with that idea.

It's a brilliant idea.

A bright idea is a good thought or a great suggestion.

You might describe a bright idea

as a good idea, something creative,

something that might help lots of people,

maybe a certain type of invention, a bright idea.

You come up with a bright idea.

We can also use bright idea sarcastically.

So maybe someone thinks of something

they come up with an idea, but the idea is terrible.

Maybe the idea is awful.

It doesn't work it's a bad idea, we might say.

Whose bright idea was that?

So we are using that particular phrase

that sentence is being used sarcastically

because the idea was not good.

It was a terrible idea.

Whose bright idea was that?

My shoes were dirty, so I decided to leave them outside.

And fortunately, during the night, it rained

and my shoes got wet.

Someone might say Whose bright idea was that?

And I will say it was my idea.

And I know it was a terrible idea.

So we might describe a bright idea.

We might use it sarcastically.

The concept or standard

perception of something is the idea.

So in your mind, if you think of a certain thing,

then it will always appear

in one particular way.

For example, if you think

of a house, imagine a house in your mind.

I think your imagination will come up, will produce

a very similar thing to everyone else.

So if I think of a house, I will think of four windows,

one door, a roof

and a chimney with a little bit of smoke coming out of it.

So your idea of something is your perception

and quite often everyone has the same perception

or the same thought of a certain thing, especially when we are talking

about the the appearance of something, the concept

or the appearance of something.

We are talking about having ideas.

Now we have idea phrases which include the following

You might put an idea

into someone's head, so you might make a suggestion.

You might say something that will inspire another person.

Or maybe you are trying to convince that person to do something.

So you might put

an idea into another person's head.

You say something, you do something,

and that person will go Ooh, that's a good idea.

You are putting an idea into someone else's head.

You are making a suggestion

to change the way another person thinks.

You are trying to put an idea into someone's head.

We can also say that you might have no idea.

If you have no idea,

it means you are clueless you don't know.

I have no idea.

A person might ask you a question,

To the question.

So you will say,

I don't know.

I have no idea.

I don't know.

Maybe you are answering a question in a quiz

and the question is very difficult and you don't know the answer.

You don't know what the answer is.

You will respond by saying,

I have no

idea to be clueless.

You don't know the answer.

You have no idea

the idea.

Never crossed my mind.

This is a sentence that people will often use

when they want to say that they did not think that particular thing,

the idea did not cross my mind.

So in this particular sentence,

we are using the idea to me

thought the thought never crossed my mind.

The idea never crossed my mind.

I didn't even think that

I didn't think that the idea never crossed my mind.

It's a good one.

I like that one.

And one more,

one more and I will be going soon.

The word idea originates from the Greek word meaning to see.

So when you have an idea, quite often

you will visualise that thing.

And this is one of the reasons why the brain

is so amazing.

It is magical, the brain is amazing.

So sometimes you can have an idea but you don't just think the idea,

you can actually see the idea, you can visualise it.

So maybe if you are thinking of

drawing a picture or painting something,

quite often you will all already have the idea in your brain.

The idea will already be there.

So quite often when you create something,

the idea will not just be a thought, it will also be an image.

You can actually see it.

So that's the reason why we often say idea, because it

originates from the word to see,

and that's how we come up with ideas.

They come up in our mind sometimes they are visual,

sometimes we can hear something, maybe a speech

we want to give, or maybe a piece of music that we want to write.

Quite often

the idea will will not just be a thought.

Quite often the idea can be real.

It can be a real thing in your brain.

I hope you enjoyed that because I am fascinated.

One of the things that always fascinates me

and this is something going back to my childhood when I visited the

the Royal Academy of Art in London many years ago as a child,

and I went to see the Impressionists,

a group of artists known as the Impressionists.

I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.

We have people like Renoir, and I suppose

we have people like Monet and also Manet.

A lot of people get Monet and Monet mixed up

but they were both very good artists.

So that is that is the moment of time where I became fascinated

by people who are able to create,

because all I could do was

imagine that person sitting down in front of a blank canvas.

Nothing in front of them.

And yet they are able to come up

with something that is both interesting

to look at, but also beautiful as well.

So that's one of the reasons why I'm fascinated by art.

I'm fascinated by people that are able

to create something from here.

It doesn't exist anywhere in the world.

And yet they are able to create it.

So my visit many years ago in, in the mid 1970s

when I went along to see this wonderful art exhibition

of many of the famous Impressionists,

it blew my mind,

my little mind, my little brain was blown away by it.

I was fascinated by it to think that these people had sat down

and they had created these wonderful images.

Sometimes the paintings would be huge, they would be really large

I suppose a good example would be Monet with his water lilies.

There was a great exhibition in Paris of Monets

water lilies that are all surrounded.

They are all around

a large room, and you can walk in

and you can see these huge water lilies,

these pictures of

I think it was actually a lake that Monet actually owned,

but yes, I love that sort of painting.

I love Impressionism because sometimes the painting

can look different depending on how close you are to it.

So if you stand very far away from a painting, especially

if it's an impression painting

you can see things

that stand out more the further away you get.

However, if you move closer to the painting,

once again, you can see things

that you couldn't see when you were standing far away.

So that's one of the reasons why I was so inspired

and fascinated by Impressionism, because the paintings would change

they would literally change depending on

how far away you were from them.

So that's that's my little story.

And that's one of the reasons why I'm always fascinated

by people who are able to create, whether it is songwriting

or painting or poetry, all of those things.

They fascinate me a lot

before I go I'm going to show you a word.

This is a word that is used quite often

when we see something, maybe we try to read something

but unfortunately it makes no sense.

And the word is

gobbledegook.

I love this word,

gobbledegook.

Gobbledegook here's an interesting word.

The word means a confusing or poorly

expressed instruction or guide

so something that has been written to explain something.

Unfortunately, it is not very good

and it is not very clear

So a confusing or poorly expressed

instruction or guide, often using specialised

jargon jargon.

So when we talk about jargon, we are using terms,

things that are only used in certain areas.

Specialist words, technical words

can be described as jargon

So quite

often if we read something, maybe an instruction

or something that is trying to give you information, put it,

unfortunately, you don't understand it.

It makes no sense.

You can say that it is all

gobbledegook gobbledegook.

I love that word.

It is a very funny word.

So the next time you read something that makes no sense,

maybe you have bought some some new piece of technology

and then you read the instructions

but you don't understand any of it.

You can just say, Oh, I can't follow these instructions.

It's all gobbledegook.

And there it is.
