look at that we had a lot of rain this morning  it was raining all night and all this morning

the rain has stopped and there is even a  little bit of sunshine as well in the sky

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how  are you today are you okay i hope so are you  

happy i hope you are feeling happy today  i hope you have a smile on your face  

at this very moment in time because  we are back together again yes  

once more if you don't already realize i have  a feeling that everyone knows now all those  

who follow me but i will say that i am with you  for six days a week monday to friday from 2pm uk  

time and also with my usual live stream my big one  on sunday if you like my live streams to be big  

then sunday is the place and the time to be  there watching me so here we are again my name  

is duncan i like english i talk about the english  language you might even say that i am one of those

mr duncan we are intrigued what does that mean  well if you are an english addict it means you  

love english you love the english language you  love learning english you like words phrases  

expressions you like to hear english being used  and that's the reason why we are here i know  

sometimes i have to explain why i do this and why  i do it live because very few people teach english  

live very few people do this in front of a live  camera and the reason is it's very hard to do  

it's not easy because if you record something you  can do it again and again until you get it right  

but if you do it live you don't get any retakes  you can only do it once so if i make a mistake  

if i get a word incorrect if i stumble or  fall if my head falls off if my eyes pop out  

whatever happens during this live stream you  will see it live and there is nothing i can do  

about it yes that is the live view behind me  yes we have a lovely day here in england and  

we have made it all the way to the middle of  another week it's very nice to see you here

it's wednesday we've made it all the way  

to the middle of another week without  blowing ourselves up very nice it's very  

nice to see that we're all still here the  human race is still in one piece for now

seven minutes past two o'clock on a wednesday  afternoon i hope your week is going well  

my week is not too bad even though i'm busy  doing this and i'm with you from monday to friday  

and also on sunday as well not saturday because i  have to have at least one day off during the week  

for me to rest and relax put my feet  up and think of something else however  

we are getting close we are getting  closer and closer to my 15th anniversary  

here on youtube the 31st of october is the actual  date when i created my youtube channel it's true  

and we will be celebrating that all the way  through the month right up to the 31st so i  

hope you will join me for all of my live streams  right up until then the birds are flying around  

you might notice today behind me you might  see lots of pigeons flying around because now  

as they come towards the end of their  breeding season the pigeons are all  

starting to gather together and this is normal  so this normally happens at this time of year  

so after the pigeons have stopped mating and  raising their young they often group together  

so you might notice behind me today lots of  flocks of pigeons flying around so keep a lookout  

for those and also don't forget to keep a lookout  for those white vans you might see one or two  

white vans during today's live stream oh have you  seen any today i haven't seen any not yet anyway

but it's true but i do like having friends but  i don't like to have too many people around me

that would drive me crazy quite quickly steve he  loves people he loves being around people he loves  

socializing he loves talking to people on the  telephone or in person so steve is the opposite  

of me i'm not a very social person mr steve is  a social animal he really is he loves talking

jimmy from hong kong says it is christopher  wren's birthday which one of his architects  

are you most familiar with christopher wren  is famous for building saint paul's cathedral

i don't sound too sure about that do i i'm  pretty sure christopher wren not on his own  

though he had some other people helping him  because saint paul's cathedral is pretty big  

if you've ever been to london and you've seen some  of the wonderful landmarks i suppose one of the  

most famous landmarks in london besides the houses  of parliament and i suppose there are many recent  

buildings such as the the shard the shard have  you seen that it's huge and then a lot of people  

know the london eye which is the big wheel that  you can go on but saint paul's cathedral probably  

is one of the oldest landmarks in london  besides the houses of parliament and also  

tower bridge as well tower bridge is the bridge  that goes up in the middle like that tower bridge  

and in the middle of the bridge the boats  and the large vessels will sail underneath  

the bridge as they they go along the river thames  but yes simples cathedral is probably one of the  

oldest and i suppose that the tower of london as  well very old that is the place where all of the  

traitors all of the people that had done things  against the king or queen they would be taken  

to the tower of london they would be imprisoned  they would be put in prison or executed

charming fortunately we don't do that anymore  we don't have any of that nonsense anymore

talking about changing the appearance of something  or maybe changing the way we understand something  

so if you change the shape or the appearance  of something from one thing to another  

you are altering the appearance and we are  talking about that a little bit later on

but but as soon as november comes that's it  finished finished no more daily live streams  

everything will be back to normal how old is big  ben well that's an interesting question because  

you are referring to the clock tower but did  you know that big ben is not the clock tower  

big ben is actually the bell inside the  clock so when you hear big ben strike dun dun

the bell is big ben the clock tower is not  

it used to be called stevenson's  clock tower did you know that

since stevens i think it was  Saint Stephen's clock tower  

but a few years ago it was renamed  the elizabeth ii clock tower

and as for your question i i'm not sure how old  big ben is i think it may be i want to say around  

400 years old i'm sure someone is going to correct  me i'm sure it's about 400 years old the house is  

a parliament very old building in fact it's so  old about five years ago it started falling down  

parts of the building were crumbling away  and during the past four years there has been  

a huge renovation project taking place on the  clock tower and also the whole building itself  

because it's so old it was starting to fall  to pieces so yes it is a very old building  

hello abdul mr duncan could you tell  us a little bit about trafalgar square  

the history of trafalgar square well it was  named of course after the battle of trafalgar  

so quite often we will name streets or places so  when we give the name of a street to a certain  

area or place we often name that thing after  something famous so trafalgar square is there to  

commemorate the battle of trafalgar so that's the  reason why we have that and of course nearby there  

is also nelson's comelum nelson's column it's not  easy to say that nelson's column is also nearby

christina hello to you yes it is great daily  exercise to listen to you every day i wish i  

could do it every day the only problem is well in  fact there are there are a couple of problems one  

is the time because sometimes i have other things  to do and the other thing is of course i have to  

earn a living i know it's a very sensitive subject  not many people like talking about that you see  

but i'm going to talk about it you have  to earn a living so if i went out to teach  

people one to one or if i did it here on the  internet i could charge as much money as i wanted  

trust me 40 pounds 50 pounds 100 pounds  for maybe an hour or 90 minutes easily  

but i don't want to because i want  everyone i want as many people as possible  

to have a chance to listen to english being  spoken so the reason why i do this and the  

reason why i've been doing this for 15 years i  could go away from here i could stop doing this  

and i could teach english to individual people  around the world who have lots of money and they  

can spend money on having my time but i don't  want to do that what i want to do is do this for  

as many people as possible and i want to do it  for free so making my live streams every day  

would be difficult because i have to also  then start charging and i don't want to do  

that to be honest i really don't and that's one  of the reasons why i rely on donations it sounds  

as if i'm begging but i'm not begging it's very  different there is a difference between begging

stonehenge is ways way down south the south of  england stonehenge it is an ancient monument used  

by the druids to welcome the summer solstice when  the sun would rise very early in the morning and  

the druids would dance around stonehenge  and we do think maybe they were naked

we think maybe they had no clothes on because  they like to be as close as possible to nature  

so they are dancing around naked completely naked  welcoming the sun and stonehenge is one of many  

monuments many ancient monuments hello can  you please read my message above says sorry  

if i can find it oh here we go mr duncan why  don't you have some of your live streams over  

your live streams i think it will bring a huge  nudge in the number of people who subscribe  

i'm not quite sure what you mean by that  why don't you have some of your students  

over your live streams maybe you mean through  skype or something like that i've explained this  

many times and i'm going to explain it again i'm  sorry if you've heard me tell you this before the  

problem with that is the technology has to be good  at both ends so from your end if you are calling  

me we have to make sure that your technology is  as good as the connection here because if it isn't  

it becomes an absolute disaster and  i'm sure you know what i mean by that  

quite often it does not work very well so  that's the reason why one of the things i  

might do in the future is have a connection with  just the voice so not video but maybe just calls  

that come in like a radio show so maybe i  will do that in the future but it is important  

to get the technology working well so  i can do it from this end no problem  

but the problem arises is when the connection  is not very good and you can spend many many  

minutes of your live stream trying to get  something to work and that is not very good

i live in a place called peterborough yes i  know peterborough over towards the east midlands  

i know peterborough yes very well known  place i can see many cars behind you you  

will see cars going by over there because  that is the main road between much wenlock  

and shrewsbury so that actually is a very busy  road you can see behind me and that is why you  

can see lots lots of cars and vans and quite often  trucks going by in fact if i wait for a second  

you might see maybe a lorry or even a  white van going by let's have a look hmm

no it's always the way whenever i wait for  something to go by you can guarantee that  

the road becomes quiet ah there we go  look at that that was a perfect example  

of a white van that's a big white van  going by then so for those wondering  

what that is behind me yes the main road  behind me live right now not recorded

yes it would be lovely to have my viewers talking  to me but the problem is of course the technology

quite often this goes wrong as well so we do  have to make sure we keep up the the standard  

of the technology because there's nothing worse  than watching someone trying to talk to another  

person through the internet and sometimes  it can be disastrous completely disastrous  

we are looking at ways of describing the changes  in the appearance of something now quite often  

when we do that we are also looking at the  change of the shape so you are changing the shape  

of something you can also change the way something  appears so it doesn't have to be something you can  

see it can also be something that you understand  so you will see some of these words can be used  

not only to express visual things like objects  but also things that are in your mind things  

that are understood as well so we're going to  look at those briefly don't forget this is my

short quick fix live stream  today so only a short one  

here we go then let's have a look shall we so  change the shape when you change the shape of  

something you are altering the dimensions as it  appears the shape of something you can change  

the shape of something quite often you can  alter the way something appears and i'm going  

to give you some examples and also show you what  those words look like so not only am i going to  

show you the words i'm also going to show you  how they change the appearance of the object  

so for example i will give you a good example  straight away here we go distort distort  

change the shape of something you distort  something you are changing the way it appears  

and i will give you an example  by showing you this word  

there it is can you see what i've  done i have distorted the word distort  

so if you distort something you change the  shape and quite often you will change the  

shape in many ways you distort something you  might distort something to the point where  

you can't recognize it it becomes unrecognizable  so here you can see i will click my button  

and then i will distort the word  distort like that so that is the word  

and what i've done i've changed not only the shape  but also the way it appears in other ways too  

distort you distort things you distort one  thing you change the shape you can also  

distort things that are believed or understood  you can distort the truth so maybe your  

your view of something is different from  someone else's but you will try to distort  

the truth to fit your own idea or your own  way of looking at things you distort something  

and this is what it looks like  distort my phone is ringing wait there

so to distort something to change the shape  in various ways here's another one deform  

another word that can be used to show the change  of the shape or appearance of something deformed  

and i will show you what it looks like when i do  the actual word deform so as you can see parts of  

the word have now become much larger whilst  some things have become smaller and twisted  

to change the shape of something you deform  something a person might be born with some  

sort of deformity maybe part of their body is much  larger than it should be maybe part of their face  

is much larger maybe one of their hands is much  larger or maybe much smaller than it should be  

so deformities a person can be born with some sort  of deformity maybe they are born with no legs or  

no arms maybe they only have one ear or no ears so  there are many types of deformity that can affect  

a person and quite often they are present  from birth to deform something the word  

deform here's another one and this is  the word i mentioned a few moments ago  

twist you twist something maybe you take something  and you turn it in your hands however one hand  

is going one way and the other hand is going the  other so you twist something twist you might twist  

a branch on a tree you twist something you change  the shape of something by turning or altering  

its length in a certain way  and this is what it looks like  

twist you are twisting something the word  twist has been twisted you twist the word  

twist you might also twist the truth as  well you can twist the truth maybe you  

are putting forward a certain idea and you are  saying that that is true when in fact it isn't  

what you have actually done is twisted the  truth you are saying something that is not true  

however you are putting it forward you are putting  it forward as if it is true you twist the truth  

you can twist something here's another one

this one is a word we use quite often when we  are maybe designing something or changing the  

appearance of something that is solid or maybe  something that we want to to look more fashionable  

perhaps you want to change the shape of something  the word is skew oh i like that word skew  

skew is the word to skew something is to put  something at an angle you are changing the shape  

of all four corners you skew something  and i will show you what it looks like  

skew there you can see now so that is what looks  like when you skew an object you skew something  

you are twisting the angles of all four corners  you skew that thing you are changing the shape  

from that to that you skew something i love  that word by the way it's not easy to pronounce  

but the word skew is a great word i like it here's  another one very similar to the previous one

slant slant so again if you are changing  part of the angle of something you slant  

that thing you slant the object you change  the appearance like this and there it is slant  

so if you slant something you are changing the  angle once again normally the vertical angle  

the vertical angle is normally altered  and that is what happens when you slant  

something something that is not straight  or level we can say that it is on a slant  

it is not straight it is slanted another  good word i like that word here's another one  

now this is one i'm sure you know i think you know  this one very well the next word coming up now  

bend bend to take something  something that is straight and you

bend that thing you bend an object maybe  something that is straight and solid  

you bend the thing and it looks like this

bend to bend something to make something not  straight you s you change it from being straight  

to bent something is bent you bend that thing  of course in nature some things are already bent  

can you name something that is bent naturally  well of course i would think of a banana  

a banana is bent naturally so you don't  have to bend the banana the banana  

is already bent so to bend  something is to change the shape  

like that you bend something here's  another one oh i like this one

stretch of course by the way you can also bend  your body if you want to pick something up off  

the floor you will bend down or bend over here's  another one oh i like this word stretch stretch

you stretch something

stretch vitoria says a boomerang is bent it is  yes a boomerang the shape of a boomerang is quite  

interesting and if you throw it  it will come back as it spins  

through the air it will eventually come back  the way it went it's amazing have you ever  

tried throwing a boomerang it's very interesting  to stretch something to make something longer  

than it was before you might stretch  an item or stretch an object like this

is stretch your arms maybe you will stretch  your legs maybe you will stretch your neck

and then well if you are me you will get back  into bed and have another 20 minutes sleep stretch  

to stretch maybe if you stretch forward you are  trying to reach something that is far away you  

might stretch your arm out you are trying to reach  something that is far away i'm trying to stretch  

i have to stretch my arm i'm trying to reach  that apple in the tree but it's too far away  

stretch to make something longer than it is

stretch here's another one so stretch is  to make something longer you extend that  

thing and then we have another one squash  squash so stretch is lengthening something  

quite often horizontally you might  stretch something across stretch  

then we have squash squash and this is  a slightly different change of shape  

as i will show you right now squash you squash  something you flatten something so instead of it  

being solid and upright and visible you squash  that thing squash you might squash an insect  

maybe you squash an ant or a fly you squash  something so you change the shape of it  

by flattening the whole surface squash  you squash something flat like this

here's another one i like this  one by the way this is a good one

apparently as you get older some people say that  as you get older you do this next word shrink  

apparently as you get older you shrink  you become smaller as you get older  

i don't know why it happens but apparently  as you get older and older you get smaller  

and shorter and then suddenly people can't see  you because you're hidden away shrink shrink

if you shrink it means you get smaller you make  something smaller like this ding shrink so you  

can see here the action is actually taking place  on the screen from something large to something  

small you shrink something you make it smaller you  are changing the shape you are changing the size  

of something from something large to something  small you shrink that thing sometimes if you are  

maybe going for a swim i'm sure the men will know  what i mean by that if you are going for a swim

and if the water is cold

certain parts of your body might shrink

next word i will show it to you elongate  elongate to make something longer you elongate  

something to stretch something out maybe an  item or an object you elongate that thing  

maybe if you are doing something for a certain  period of time but then you add some more time  

to that action or that situation or the thing  you are doing you might elongate or stretch  

the meeting to make it longer it means it is  taking longer to do it you elongate something and  

i will show you what it looks like if you elongate  something it looks like this ding elongate so you  

can see the arrow next to that is making it  longer so you are making something longer  

making something longer you elongate something  i like that word it's an interesting word that  

elongate and of course you can see that it  does have the word long inside the actual word  

elongate of course there is an opposite to  that if we make something no longer long

if something stops being long and then it becomes  short we can say that you shorten that thing  

so you make it shorter you shorten  something so instead of something being  

long or something happening for a long time  you make the time less you make it shorter  

to shorten something and i will show you what it  looks like ding shorten you elongate you shorten  

we can also say lengthen as well if you make  something longer we can say also that you lengthen  

something lengthen you make it longer

so to shorten something you make it shorter than  it was you might shorten the length of your dress  

maybe it is too long you have to  shorten the dress because it is too long  

here's another one some of these words by the way  are quite gruesome they are not very nice words  

but i'm going to show you anyway the next one is  disfigure if you disfigure something to disfigure  

is to make something look different to how it was  before normally by damaging something or something  

that has been damaged the appearance has altered  it has become disfigured the appearance has  

changed quite often because of damage or  harm i will show you what it looks like  

disfigure you disfigure something  it cannot be recognized afterwards  

to change the appearance of something so  it does not look like what it did before  

you change the appearance you disfigure  something you might disfigure a person's face  

and cause harm to their face so their face is  badly damaged or harmed or injured you disfigure  

something or someone their face no  longer looks like it used to disfigure

here's another one very similar to the to the  previous word mutilate oh mutilate mutilate  

if you mutilate something it means you chop that  thing up you mutilate you chop something you cut  

something quite often into pieces or maybe  you disfigure something to the point where  

it can't be recognized at all so quite often  if you mutilate something it means you change  

the appearance completely and quite often you  will cut the thing as well mutilate mutilate  

and this is what it looks like oh  dear mutilate to mutilate something  

is to cut something up maybe you attack a person  you mutilate that person or maybe an animal  

maybe people who go hunting for animals maybe  they use dogs and the dogs will mutilate  

the animal they are chasing a rather gruesome  violent word mutilate we've almost finished  

here is another one i wonder if you recognize  this word changing the appearance or the shape  

of something pixelate pixelate now this is quite  a good word this is a modern word that you might  

hear used when a person is hiding their identity  maybe a person is hiding their appearance you  

pixelate something and this is what it looks like  when you pixelate an object it looks like that  

quite often you will see people photographed  maybe if there is a picture of a person but they  

don't want to show their face you will often  pixelate that person a little bit like this

i wonder who that is who is that  person hidden away pixelated  

that person does not want to be  identified they have been pixelated

you don't know who they are because their identity  has been hidden pixelate so this is the word  

and this is what it looks like after you have  actually done the meaning of the word pixelate

to pixelate something is to obscure something  to a certain degree so it can't be recognized  

and quite often you will see people their  faces their identity will be hidden because  

their their photograph has been pixelated  sometimes when your computer isn't working  

properly or if you are watching a video and the  signal or the streaming is not very good sometimes  

the picture will become pixelated as well and we  have one more the last one before we go one more

slice to slice something i'm sure you've heard of  this word and i'm sure you know what the action is  

to slice something you cut something up into small  thin strips slice so quite often you will slice  

bread you will slice something maybe a piece of  meat you will slice the meat you will cut into the  

meat and then you will remove small thin slices so  to slice something is definitely a way of changing  

the shape you slice something up and this is what  it looks like like that you slice something up

yes you might have a slice of butter that's  true you might have a slice of bread a slice of  

cheese something you have cut and now  you have a thin piece of that thing slice

ways of doing it doing it and also expressing  it as well in english i hope that has been

into small pieces and then you can make some  delicious chips you can also have a slice of mango

it is very easy to change your mind when you are  doing something maybe if something takes too long  

or maybe something that seems too difficult you  might be tempted you might think you want to give  

up you might think i don't want to do this anymore  it's too difficult i want to change my mind i've  

changed my plan i don't want to do this anymore  well my advice to you is never give up and that  

is today's anagram it's also a very good piece  of advice as well if you want to learn anything  

one of the the biggest tips that i can give you  today is never give up however hard things seem if  

you feel tired when you are studying take a rest  don't force yourself to do something for too long  

and that applies to anything anything  you are doing anything you are learning  

never be afraid to take a rest but also  never give up whatever it is you are doing  

don't let other people change your mind
