I've been staying in a place very different from here, a little more noisy,

that doesn't really matter when you think about it, because at least we're here now.

and my dentist was very pleased.

Now there are some problems with my back teeth.

I don't have to come back for six months.

So I felt rather pleased about that.

I will be honest.

I did feel pleased that six months

before I have to go back to the dentist so all of my hard work

keeping my teeth nice and clean has paid off,

even though there are some slight problems at the back.

what a busy week it has been.

I have to say it's been a very busy one.

Quite busy.

I've been doing quite a few things travelling.

We went somewhere very interesting during the week.

I was out and about in Liverpool at the start of the week.

I spent three days there and it was rather interesting.

So these are some general shots that I took whilst there

I was in Liverpool.

Unfortunately, the weather was terrible so it was not good weather.

The weather was pretty bad to say the least.

We had some of the worst weather that we've experienced for quite a few years.

Very strong winds blowing in so I was in Liverpool.

Duncan Liverpool is a famous place for various reasons.

Well, it's famous for its dock

where all of the ships arrive and depart.

It's also famous for something else as well.

Can you guess what it is?

What else is Liverpool famous for?

Well, I suppose you might say

it is the birth of the British rock movement

with certain types of styles of music

that all came around in the early 1960s.

And you might say that this particular place was where it all started.

In fact, right here,

one particular group, well known

for performing in this particular part of Liverpool.

We will take a closer look at that

on Sunday.

One of the most famous

pop groups in the world performed here.

They originated in this particular city as well,

so there is something we might take

We talk about influence as being one thing,

affecting another thing in a certain way.

So when we talk about influence, we are looking at the way

one thing acts on another.

There might be some sort of connection,

or maybe one thing has a certain force over another.

There is a certain type of influence.

That is what we are looking at today.

We are looking at influencers, words and phrases.

We often think of certain people

as having influence and I always think it's an interesting word

because it can be used in many other ways as well, influence

the way one thing can affect another

the inflow, in fact, that is where the word comes from,

the inflow of something, the influence.

But generally speaking, when we talk about influence,

we often talk about the effect that one person can have on another.

So that is normally how we describe influence.

So let's have a look, shall we?

Let's take a deeper look, a closer

look at influence.

And there it is, the word on the screen.

So it originates from inflow

or something that is flowing inwards.

That is how we come by the word influence.

The word influence can be used as a noun and a verb.

So it is possible to use influence influence as a noun,

the influence that a person has

or to influence someone as an action.

The effect that one thing has on another,

the influence that it has.

So we can talk about influence as a noun

to have influence,

or we can talk about it as a verb, which is the transfer

of some sort of feeling

or maybe an idea, the influence.

It's a little bit like sending out radio signals

to another thing or another person.

You are influencing that particular person

has the capacity or power

to be a compelling force on others

is a very good way of describing influence.

The capacity or the ability or the power

to be a compelling force.

When we talk about the word compelling,

something that draws

you closer, something that you almost can't

stop looking at or something you can't stop

listening to, you feel as if you lose control

because you want to know more about that thing

or you want to listen to that thing more.

It is compelling.

It is pulling you towards it.

A compelling force.

I love that word.

By the way, the action or process of producing effects

on the actions or behaviour of others.

So that is one thing.

Change is the behaviour

or the thoughts or the way

in which a person does something.

The action or process of producing effects

on the actions or behaviour of others.

So we often look at influence as being something

that occurs between human beings,

the things we do, the things we see.

So maybe something you see

influences you as an individual

and it does happen quite often.

One thing effects another thing.

The process is influence.

Influence.

The process of influence is influence.

It is transferring from one thing to another.

An object might influence something due to its proximity

or the nearness or closeness of something.

So one thing might influence another thing.

And when we look at the solar system, when we look at space,

deep space, we can see influence

taking place all the time out there

in deep space.

A lot of things influence each other.

For example, the moon has an influence on the sea levels here on Earth.

So on Earth there is an influence from the moon.

So as the moon goes around the earth,

the ocean level rises as it is attracted

and repelled.

So the moon has

an influence on the sea levels here on earth.

A very good example of how

physical influence can actually occur.

And it is one we can see all the time

when the tide, when the ocean comes in,

and when it goes out, when the sea comes in

and goes out, that is caused by

the influence of the moon.

The thing causing the influence is the influence.

So we are using that as a noun.

The influence is the thing.

The thing itself, the thing that is causing

the influence may be a person

that you see on the internet, maybe someone you overhear talking about something,

maybe their conversation, perhaps their conversation

will somehow influence you.

Something you read, something you see on television

might influence you to do something.

One object

can influence another through gravitational force.

So again, a very good example being the effect of the moon and the earth.

There is a definite effect

caused by gravitational force.

The influence.

One thing can affect another thing.

It has influence.

So one person can influence others

by their actions all through their words.

So when you do something, maybe another person sees what you do,

maybe they see you, and perhaps they feel as if they want to do the same thing.

Maybe they hear a conversation,

maybe they hear you say something.

So even you have the power

to influence once other people.

We all do it.

Maybe a very small action that seems insignificant

can have a big effect on other people.

One thing can influence another

through their words

or of course, through their actions.

are occupations in sales.

So if you are a sales person, if you work in sales,

if you sell things, or maybe you are promoting something,

you are trying to persuade people

to buy something or to do something

or to think in a certain way.

We often think sales

many years ago I was involved in sales,

so I did work in sales a long, long time ago.

One of my first ever jobs in my early

working life.

Isn't that lovely?

So if you are selling something, I think you are definitely a person

who is trying to use the influence of the people.

You want to influence others to

buy something or

to want to do something to influence other people.

I think the term influence

is often used to describe a person on social media.

So when we talk about a person who is on social media,

maybe a person who creates videos

teaching English,

I don't know who that would be,

but maybe the term influencer

and this is a word we do hear a lot these days.

We do hear a lot.

People are described

as influencers,

maybe a famous person, maybe a famous footballer,

maybe a famous singer,

maybe a person who talks about politics.

Maybe that person could be described as an influencer.

They have the power to influence other people.

A successful publisher on sites such as Twitch,

TikTok, and here on YouTube.

Of course, there are many successful influencers on social media.

And I would say, especially here on YouTube, there are many famous

influencers.

I'm not saying that I am because I know I'm not.

One person might influence another through their actions.

They might be described as influential.

A person who is influential is a person who has the power

they can influence of the people.

They are influential.

They are a person who has the ability

or maybe the position to be

an influence.

A very interesting word.

A person in high authority

might hold influence over others.

So if you hold influence,

it means you have a position or maybe a status

where you have influence over other people.

Maybe a person who has a very high up position in a company

might be described as influential.

They have influence, maybe a politician.

And this does happen a lot.

Many politicians are very powerful.

They have the ability to influence other people

because of their position,

their social status.

One person might use their influence

over another for personal gain.

And again, this can happen in certain professions.

We often think of people who are politicians.

Maybe they will make promises

to other people in return for money.

They might use their own influence

as an MP or as a powerful politician.

They might use that

status for personal gain.

So when we say personal gain, we mean that person is gaining

something from their action.

Maybe I can promise something for you,

but you will have to pay me for that promise.

An influence

can be very powerful.

A person with influence can also be just

as powerful money or the status of being wealthy.

They are both sources of influence on others.

So if you are a very lucky person who has money,

you have the ability to influence other people.

Maybe you can pay for their favour,

maybe you can pay for their service,

maybe you can persuade them to do something for you because

have the money to pay for it.

Money or the status of being wealthy.

We do hear this quite often, maybe more than we should these days

people with power or wealth having the ability

to to persuade other people to do things

or to change something for them.

So this does happen.

You might say that sometimes money and wealth

can give one person too much influence.

Maybe

to be influential

is to have the ability to influence others.

So when we talk about someone with power or status or money

or maybe all of those things, we can describe

them as influential.

That person has a lot of power.

They are able to persuade someone

to do something for them.

Finally, there are many words

we can use and there are so many on the screen right now.

I know what you're going to say, Mr. Duncan.

There are too many words.

Don't worry, because you can watch this video many, many times.

So there are lots of words here that we can use

when we are talking about influence.

You can have clout, clout means the impact

that one person can have on another influence quite often

is one person having an effect on another person.

The consequence of something is also the influence.

So maybe something I do might have a consequence on you

because you are influenced by it.

We often talk of affect

effect is influence

the way one thing changes another.

It has an effect.

It can also have force as well.

Impact importance Leader Shit.

Many people with power authority

quite often will also have a lot of influence.

Leverage.

It's a great word.

The word leverage means the ability

to change something or move something.

Quite often a person with lots of influence

has that ability.

We talk about money as being influential.

You can pay a person

to change their mind or their decision.

Pressure is another way of doing it.

Maybe you really want another person to do something.

You have to pressure that person.

You have to ask them.

Many times you are trying to influence them

with your request.

Prestige is another one.

It is putting pressure or maybe having an influence over something.

The repercussion we often talk of cause and effect.

So you might see that the repercussion is the result of influence.

We have reputation.

A person who has a good job or lots of money.

You might know that person as being powerful.

They might have a lot of influence,

significant weight as well.

When we talk about weight in this situation, we are saying that person

has the ability to change things

because they have lots of influence.

They are a person who can change the way people behave

or think they can pay

for a person to do something.

They can influence them with their words

to affect someone

and of course to alter change.

So a person who can influence

another person changes

that other person's way of thinking.

Maybe they do something differently

because they have been influenced.

You might say that teachers are influenced us, so when you go to school,

But also

and I think sometimes people forget

this, teachers are also very strong

influences as well.

So the words and actions of a teacher

can have a very deep impact on other people.

And by that I mean the students.

And then it turns out that they are not doing that at all.
