here we are again yes we are back once more  hello everyone nice to see you again it's  

nice to be with you on a very strange day here in  england there is a slight gloominess in the air  

however today hopefully i will be able to  bring a little bit of happiness despite  

all of the dark clouds literally  there are dark clouds hanging  

in front of us right now in the in  the distance can you see them oh  

the weather today is a little bit crazy anyway  we are here together once more yes it is english  

addict live from the birthplace of the english  language which just happens to be oh england

oh hi everybody guess what this is mr duncan in  england how are you today are you okay i hope so  

are you happy are you happy today i  really hope you are feeling good and  

happy today because well i am trying to bring  a little bit of sunshine across the internet  

now we have sunshine here in england we also have  some dark clouds as well not just real dark clouds  

but also as a general feeling of sadness at  the moment because if you haven't heard already  

uh we we lost a member of the royal family on  friday so lots of people are feeling a little  

unhappy so i am going to try my best to  bring a bit of joy a bit of fun into your  

day and also into mine as well to be honest  with you a lot of people have been looking  

rather unhappy over the past 24 or maybe  48 hours i think it would be fair to say  

so here we are again yes this is english addict  and for those who don't know who i am because you  

might be watching now you might be thinking who  is this strange man looking at me well my name  

is duncan i talk about the english language i've  been doing this forever such a long time how long  

have you been doing it for mr duncan  oh thank you for asking nearly 15 years  

it doesn't seem possible but it is true that this  year will be my 15th anniversary teaching english  

on youtube i can't believe it thank you  for joining me yes we have made it to the  

end of another week well some of us have and  also to the end of another weekend yes it is

sunday

we are back together again nice  to see you here today oh how nice

i know i am only with you once a week so a lot of  people and can i just first of all say thank you  

very much for all of your lovely comments about  my full english lessons but also my live streams  

mostly about my live streams asking mr duncan  can we have more live streams during the week  

one is not enough we need more of you really you  might be one of the very few people on this planet  

who actually wants more of me most people want  to have less of me however last week yes i did  

upload another full english lesson  there it is there is the thumbnail  

and all of my full english lessons are available  on my youtube channel there is the latest one  

we are having a little break from  full english so i've done another five  

for those who have missed them  perhaps you don't even realize  

that there are some new full english lessons well  guess what there are and i will be making some  

more a little bit later on in the year however  today yes we are here live on youtube not only me

did you see last week's live stream we were  in the garden last week celebrating easter  

with mr steve yes steve will be here later on we  are going to take a look at one of our classic  

clips of myself and also mr steve in the garage  when we were tidying or trying to tidy the garage  

so that's what we will be looking at later and of  course yes mr steve will be with us live as well  

he will be here definitely as i said a little  bit of a sad note this week because we lost  

a member of the royal family one of the most  important members of the royal family in fact

spring is in the air the blossom has come  out and can you believe at the moment outside  

the weather is quite crazy at  the moment in fact right now  

believe it or not it is snowing there it is right  now outside we are having snow it is the 11th of  

april and we have snow we have some april snow  now normally in april we will get lots of rain  

but we don't normally get snow at this time  of year so there it is right now that is not  

a recording you are looking at that is actually  now i will put my hand in front of the camera  

just to prove it just a moment wait there yes yes  you see there so that that is a live view outside  

as we have snow coming down very weird what a  strange moment of time very unusual weather i hope  

you are feeling good today yes mr steve will be  with us a little bit later on here is another view

looking outside the front and now you can see the  snow is really coming down quite heavily i can't  

believe it we're having snow why how is that  possible we don't normally get snow in april i  

will be honest with you however at the moment  we are experiencing a very cold blast of air  

from the arctic so what you are looking  at at the moment outside is arctic weather  

which is which is currently coming our way  across the uk right now i can't believe it

i'm strangely fascinated by the unusual weather  

we are having right now i i can't begin to tell  you how strange this this is to be looking at snow  

in early april very weird oh i've just realized we  have the live chat hello everyone hello to those

today we are going to try and keep things happy  a lot of people yesterday i was in town yesterday  

you may have seen the video clips a few moments  ago and i filmed those in much wenlock town centre  

yesterday a lot of people looking a little bit  gloomy because we had some very sad news here in  

the uk so there are people who are not feeling  very happy they are feeling a little mournful  

but what i would like to do today  if i may i would like to bring  

a little bit of cheerfulness and also a  little bit of happiness into your lives i had

a lovely moment of time on friday i had the  most wonderful moment can you guess what it is  

as you know lockdown is slowly coming to an end  here in the uk which means that elderly care homes  

have now started allowing people to visit but  unfortunately you can only have one visitor  

and my sister went over on friday to  visit my mother who is being taken  

care of she has not been very well however i  was able to say hello to my mother on friday  

through facetime on the phone so that was  amazing i was really pleased not only that  

and this is the part that made me really happy  my mum actually spoke to me and i thought that  

was the most amazing thing so i said hello  to mum she she recognized me on the phone  

and she even replied to me and she says she  misses me so i i thought that that was the most  

wonderful moment because between you and me and  you know i like to share my experiences with you  

i really thought i really thought in my heart and  in my mind that i would never be able to actually  

have a conversation with my mum again however  i did on friday she said hello and she told me  

she loves me and that's all i wanted that's all i  want i'm happy and my mum was laughing as well she  

even had a big smile on her face so i felt really  good about that and it did put me in a good mood  

even though at the same time on friday people  were feeling a little unhappy i actually wasn't  

i had a big smile on my face because my  mum said hello to me and she recognized me  

and i felt very good about that even though it was  it was through the phone because there are still  

restrictions taking place unfortunately  but yes it did happen and i'm feeling  

very happy about that that i could see my  mum and i will be doing the same thing next  

friday as well i will be having a little bit  of face time with my mother who is in hospital

isn't it nice when something good happens it  might not be a huge thing maybe a moment of  

time that brings a smile to your face however as  long as it makes you smile that's all that matters  

sometimes a smile can go a mile it  can really help you to feel better

mr steve likes to grumble about things i can  hear him sometimes when he's on the telephone  

in his office he thinks i can't hear him but  i can i can hear everything he's saying and

you know the world of english is a fun and  exciting place to be especially today because  

i'm back with another full english lesson coming  to you from the birthplace of eric clapton kate  

winslet david beckham richard branson and of  course the english language which is the thing  

we all have in common a passionate love of  this lovely thing called english so without  

any more dawdling or annoying holdups let's  get on with today's full english lesson right

now

can you see what i have in my hand it's a  hook this might look like a simple object  

but it has many uses both inside and outside  the house it is useful for hanging things  

either from a wall or ceiling the word hook can  be used in many ways too as a noun it names a  

piece of metal or plastic that is curved at one  end it is an object used for hanging things from  

come in many different shapes and sizes you can  also use a hook to catch a fish you put a hook  

on the end of a fishing line an object for hanging  clothes on is also called a hook once more these  

come in many different shapes and sizes a hook can  also describe an eye-catching thing something that  

is used to get attention from people is a hook  for example a sales hook a short swinging punch  

is also a hook as a verb the word hook can mean  the action of attaching two or more hooks together  

you can hook one thing to another you can hook  onto something he managed to hook his leg onto  

the branch to prevent himself from falling a  person who has become over-reliant on something  

is hooked to hook someone on a thing so as to  get them addicted the person who is addicted  

is hooked my brother became hooked on drugs during  his teen years to lure someone towards something  

such as an image a person or a song is hook the  thing in question is attractive it hooks you you  

can hook up with someone to meet a person with  a view to starting a relationship is hook up to  

connect electrical equipment together with wires  is hook up he came over last night to hook up my

it's now time to take a look at another buzz word  a buzz word is a word or phrase that is used often  

during a certain period or is generally popular  today's buzz word is embargo the word embargo can  

be used as a noun and as a verb as a noun embargo  means to block something from being imported from  

another country an import ban can be described as  an embargo the weapons embargo begins at midnight  

a dispute between two nations might result in  an embargo an official ban on all activity is an  

embargo there is an embargo on taking photographs  in the courtroom historically an embargo names the  

state of ships being unable to enter or leave a  country's port we sometimes include an embargo  

with the word sanction one country might sanction  an embargo on another as punishment an embargo  

aimed at a country often involves much needed  commodities the most common being oil and gas

it's a fact of life that we all have to work  it is how we earn our bread and butter it is a  

means to an end we must do it to survive there  are many ways of expressing regular work it is  

a job it's an occupation it is your profession it  is your livelihood it's what you do for a living  

the word profession also helps to name the type  of job you do what is your profession i'm a sales  

assistant we can also ask what do you do for  a living i work as a sales assistant in a shop  

we can ask who a person works for this often  relates to a big company or public sector service  

i work at google i work for the fire department  you can work full-time or part-time the average  

hours worked each week here in the uk is around  40 hours however some people work very long  

hours hospital employees might work very long  shifts some workers might have to be on the job  

around the clock the amount of work a person is  willing to do varies a hard working person might  

be willing to work long hours while some people  might avoid work at any cost they are work shy  

a work shy person might be described  as a layabout slacker bone idol lazy  

why don't you go out and get a job you're just a  bone idol lazy layabout negative slang terms for  

regular work include daily grind nine to five  rat race daily slog an interesting job can be  

rewarding while adult or an interesting job might  be described as tedious laborious and rewarding  

to work hard you must slog your guts out keep  your nose to the grindstone sweat give your all  

having a job is a necessity it is what brings in  your livelihood the income your source of revenue  

your earnings it is a fact of life that we all  have to work it is how we earn our bread in butter  

it is a means to an end we must do it to survive  and yes last week i did put another full english  

lesson on my youtube channel and it is available  to view right now along with all the rest of them

for you as well because you're showing up  because you can stand this you can actually  

you can actually sit and watch this  without wanting to i want to say throw up  

yeah the magic of being able to do this mr duncan  never never fails to amaze me uh i mean you  

obviously have been as you have mentioned  i've noticed been speaking to your mother  

i have via you know video conference or whatever  you want to call it well we use facetime on our  

iphones it was myself and my sister so not only  was i able to speak to my mum but also she was  

able to speak to me she actually recognized me  so i pointed the camera towards my face and this  

this is a face that once you see it you never  forget it most people when they meet me or  

after they meet me they never forget me they know  exactly who i am and also my name oh you'd expect  

your mother to remember you well i know i know  in her current uh medical condition state okay  

nevertheless that was very nice to see and in  fact this morning a friend of mine in malaysia  

because we visited there haven't we in the  past many times one of our friends uh azar  

that's right uh it was his birthday  today yes and what i loved steve  

was you were were practicing once again your  sign language that you haven't used for years  

that's true because the friend i have in malaysia  is deaf deaf and dumb actually don't don't  

matter i don't think we say i think we do anyway  we don't say we don't say death okay hearingly  

challenged and vocally challenged person is  that the politically correct way to say it  

mr duncan we definitely don't say deaf and  dumb i don't know i i've lost i don't know  

what's politically politically correct and what  isn't anymore and quite frankly i don't care  

uh because i'm not trying to offend anyone anyway  he can't hear me so it's all right but yes so i  

haven't we last went to malaysia how many years  ago well last time the last time i went there  

steve was actually 2014. so i i made a little  video lesson i actually went to malaysia made  

a video lesson in malaysia and it is available  on my youtube channel so i did do that but yes  

the first time we went to malaysia was in 1996 and  when was the last time i went the last time you  

went was the same talk was the same time i went  which was i think it was 2001. i think it was then  

and i always remember that because i i came back  after you did and i came back the day before  

9 11. i i came back on the the 8th is that right  no sorry the 10th of september 2001 and of course  

the next day we had the attacks in new york so  i came back the day before not not that there's  

any significance in that which there isn't and  i flew out somewhere with work the day after  

yes but anyway that's beside the point  what i was going to say was that i haven't  

seen my friend in malaysia for 20 years 21 years  but no 20 years exactly and yes we've exchanged  

emails and photographs but suddenly i said happy  birthday and then he messaged me and i got a a  

you know a call on my phone to actually see him  live yes and we haven't done that because i didn't  

think because he lives in a part of malaysia where  they don't have very good internet connection so  

for him to be able to get a video connection  was pretty amazing so 20 years the first time  

that we were able to communicate but he had to  go because i think it's ramadan at the moment i  

think i'm right it is because they're eight hours  ahead of us that's it is the start of ramadan  

so of course and our friend does observe  that so yeah it was nice so steve had a  

sort of conversation i suppose with someone he  hasn't seen for a while or spoken to or sign  

language to and i spoke to my mum on friday and  i haven't been able to speak to her for over a  

year a year ago was the last time i saw my mum so  it was interesting a lot of people talking about  

the eurovision song contest oh okay apparently  it's in rotterdam this year okay um palmyra's  

mentioned it and people are asking about it um  yes you could call it a song festival i don't  

think it's really a festival just a competition  really yes uh probably not the highest quality  

pop it's pop music probably not the highest  quality in the world yes but uh it's designed  

to win a competition so uh it will have  certain characteristics as a result of that but  

we used to enjoy watching it because we had a  commentator in the uk that was very sarcastic  

uh in his commentary of what was going  on and it was very interesting because  

what was displayed because it's mainly european  countries but not exclusively european countries  

okay and certain countries always voted against  never voted for us no matter how good we were yeah  

and we'd never vote for them it was well it's  so much for us we we weren't in the eurovision  

song contest i think you mean i mean the uk the uk  but because it's very divisive in the sense that  

uh countries that like each other will vote  for their contestant and vice versa and if you  

don't like a country you don't vote vote for them  it's very very political yeah the eurovision song  

contest yeah it's very funny to watch to watch  it for example france would never vote for us  

ever okay we probably would vote for them it  was quite it was very interesting to see you  

know the history of countries uh sort of his  historical uh legacies uh uh their bear bearing  

forth on the eurovision song contest what old  sort of old hatreds and and all sorts of things  

never die do they with some countries and  that used to come that was very obvious in  

the eurovision song contest but it is it is just a  bit of fun it's a bit of fun it's supposed to be a  

bit of fun and and some of the music some of the  entries to the eurovision song contest are almost  

experimental so so there have been some  very strange weird and wonderful entries  

to the eurovision song contest i can't  remember where it is this year is it  

island did ireland win last year i can't  remember well ross it's rotterdam this year  

oh great that's good so ireland won it last  year but they they win it a lot because uh  

but they they always seem to win it quite i think  they've won it up many many times people are  

saying i'm talking too quickly yes it's not that  we don't like the eurovision song contest we do  

like it okay and it has its followings but it  tends to be very political the way people vote  

so it did start out as something that was fun  many years i think it started in the late i  

went to say the late 1950s i think the eurovision  song contest has been happening for a long time  

before it went on television now i might be  wrong about that but yes so so it has it has  

been around for a long time but i suppose like  anything when you think about it like anything  

that exists it always becomes a little bit  political in the end i suppose it's very hard to  

avoid it it's funny to watch it anarchy  says i can't bear the eurovision song  

contest and everything around it  maybe it's because i do love music  

very good sergio says it's a substitute for war  yeah i think you're right i always think that  

the eurovision song contest is like is like a war  with no casualties well i suppose you're hearing  

might be one of the casualties having to listen to  some of the songs what have i done mr duncan the  

chats disappear i don't know i don't know what  you've done steve i don't know what you've done  

steve once again pressing all the buttons oh it  it disappeared and said uh error okay so i pressed  

something and then it disappeared completely error  but yes uh do i know any singers in turkey no i  

don't but i think uh turkey definitely do uh do  they go do they enter the eurovision song contest  

i think they do you don't have to be in europe  to to uh enter the eurovision song contest um  

but i think turkey definitely do take part um  but i can't think of don't know the names of any  

singers no richard said we need an american  jury well they would probably favor us yes  

well maybe yes but they probably would  it'd be very difficult to get an unbiased  

uh judges of the eurovision song contest yes  you really need a neutral country that has no  

hatred towards anyone any anyone in europe which  which to be honest with you these days is isn't  

easy it's not easy to find a neutral country  do you know who used to be the neutral country  

i think it used to be was it switzerland  well it certainly was during world war  

ii yes it's very interesting that isn't it um but  i don't know how it would be classed now no uh  

there we go um last year's cancer two years  ago it was run it was won by the dutch  

so hence it being in rotterdam okay  then obviously we didn't have it i don't  

remember that because it's two years ago tomek of  course yeah uh we didn't have one last year yes  

yes so oh of course coronavirus covid it cancelled  is that right yes of course it's strange isn't it  

because i still think it's 2020. it doesn't it  just it just feels like 2020 is still happening  

i i sometimes forget that this is actually a new  year it still feels like i'm i'm living in 2020.  

there we go so uh tomic will be going to that  i would imagine can't be very far from where he  

lives so maybe get some tickets and then you can  take some pictures and show us what it's like yes  

now we were lucky a few years ago we actually got  some tickets to see when when it was here in the  

uk because the previous year the uk had won but  this is going back a few years to the late 1990s  

so it was it was when we won the eurovision song  contest in the late 1990s but we were lucky enough  

to get some tickets not to the actual performance  but the rehearsal for it so we sat through  

and watched everything and i think i'm sure it  was the year when when donna international won  

i think it was and i think i think that was the  first time a lot of people had heard of i want to  

say transsexuals but i apologize if i've got the  wrong pronoun or or name there but i think i think  

that was the first time people came across that  sort of thing for the first time and since then  

i suppose things have changed so it was  always seen as as a sort of milestone year  

when donna international took part in the  eurovision song contest and of course later  

on there was that that lady with the beard  as well which came careful why well it was

it was a lady with a beard am i wrong or right  i'm sure someone and i know you will someone will  

correct me have we been to turkey  yes uh mia's twice yes with twice  

we have been there we've had uh lovely holidays  in turkey in the south i think it's the south  

um pettier yes we went to turkey i i even made a  lesson so i've made an english lesson in turkey  

as well so watch that yes what number is it what  number is i have no idea what number it is i've  

i've made so many lessons over the years sometimes  i forget but yes i did make a lesson all about  

going on holiday and the holiday i was taking  was in turkey and it is on my youtube channel  

so what are we talking about today mr duncan  well besides the eurovision song contest which  

we didn't know we were going to talk about we're  talking about something pleasant today something  

happy i've noticed outside well first of all you  you've been outside digging in the garden again  

very busy very busy and we noticed that  there were lots of birds around you because  

at this time of year many birds are starting to  build their nests they are looking for places  

to build their nests and here is a short video  clip that i filmed around three or four years ago  

and in this video you will see that there is  a small bird trying to get into my letterbox

this is something i've noticed  can you see what's going on here  

a pair of long tail tits are currently  trying to build a nest in this letterbox  

unfortunately they are having a  little bit of trouble getting in

yes the season for building nests  has returned and lots of birds  

at the moment are trying to find  things to build their nests with and  

and some of them we think some of them  might already have their chicks don't we  

at least they they're sitting on their eggs yes  because when i was gardening yesterday digging up  

quite a large area of ground that i want to put  down to grass to extend the area of lawn we're  

making some changes to the garden which we will  be showing i am we will well okay then you are  

steve steve himself personally not me because i'm  a lazy bugger steve is is laying some new grass  

on the front of the garden we will be we'll  look look at that in a couple of weeks actually  

because steve will be very busy with that  meanwhile i was what i was going to say was  

the birds when i was digging the soil it was by  a bush and uh these black birds kept coming down  

the male and female gathering all the worms  that i was uncovering when i was digging and  

a robin as well and taking them in his beak and  her beak well it was mainly the the male i think  

the female was sitting on the eggs and the male  was feeding her because he would collect the worms  

and then disappear in the bush thought i couldn't  see him uh and then kept coming out i nearly uh  

i knew he knocked and he knocked into him uh fell  on him one one day i mean i turn around and he's  

there like a two foot away what i find interesting  what i find interesting is quite often birds will  

if they have to they will come quite close to  other human beings so here's a quick video clip  

steve we can talk over this so if we look here  you you will actually be able to see a black bird  

gathering some material for its nest and there  it is coming onto the screen from the top  

and that looks like i can't quite tell that looks  like a female so i think that is actually a female  

and look the the blackbird is actually taking some  of the dried i suppose the dried flowers and look

this bird is taking that yes that's  before i before i cleaned up the wall yes  

isn't that amazing so the the little  black bird is actually gathering  

material for its nest and this is sitting i i  think this is a couple of years ago i filmed  

this but the same thing has been happening at  the front of the garden as well because there is  

a nest a blackbird nest actually in our front  garden as well and if you would like to see  

what a blackbird nest looks like there is a  blackbird nest now this is one that was left  

after the chicks had flown so i i didn't interfere  or or invade the nest for those who are worried  

so i didn't do it myself but perhaps was  this mess mr doe so this was actually just  

at the back of the garage where where  there is a large tree that joins a fence  

and and you can see that is actually an image of a  blackbird nest but one that is disused and because  

of course you should never disturb a nest if  there are chicks inside you should never do that  

uh yes marcia says that there was a hummingbird  who's made a nest has made a nest in the plant  

that is uh by the door in her house maybe by the  front door or the back door so it may be my see  

you've got a little plant pot or a plant pot with  a plant in it maybe a bush or tree something and  

this humming a hummingbird has made a nest in  it that sounds we don't get hummingbirds here in  

the uk because we're not warm enough the climate  isn't warm enough beautiful birds by the way two  

small eggs how so that'll be very fascinating to  to watch we were we were commenting on on robin's  

the other day because robins build their nests  in the right on the ground yes in the most  

vulnerable looking places and yet when  they're flying around they've always got to be  

on top of something high up uh they always  perch themselves high up so they can look down  

they must feel safe but and yet they build  their nests at the lowest point right on the  

ground i can't believe that robin's of of all  the things that a bird should not do it is build  

your nest on the ground where cats can easily  get to them and we have a lot of cats around  

here so you do see this sometimes you will walk  along the road and suddenly you will see a nest  

by the side of the road and there are some  chicks inside all waiting to be fed and it's  

a little robin's nest rosa says that the same bird  that you've just shown which was a long tail tit  

yeah rosa said she has that bird in her window oh  that does the same in her window so maybe i think  

we did wonder as well whether they were looking at  their own reflection yes because the letterbox is  

very shiny and maybe the window obviously  you can see your reflection in a window  

rosa so maybe uh maybe they're doing the same yes  i think you might be right yes so it might be a  

male who who thinks there is another male staring  at him so maybe he's fighting his own reflection  

i've done that a few times to be honest in the  morning when i've looked in the mirror and i don't  

recognize the person staring back and i start you  are you looking at me are you looking at me no  

straight out of taxi driver sergio says that i'm  always beating around the bush that's a very good  

uh yes you never get to the point what would you  call it that that's a um well it's an idiom an  

idiom that's the word i'm looking for you can say  idiom or phrase mr steve often beats around the

proper flags but you could uh they wouldn't have a  country underneath they might stand for something

i think if we were famous some of the some  of the things that we come out with well i do

officially it is 65 uh well it used to be  oh it used to be 60 for women and 65 for men  

okay but uh we're in an age of equality now uh so  the ladies have lost out in the uk here because uh  

it's 65 now for men and women so instead of  lowering the men yes they've actually made  

the women work longer uh you see this is what  happens you wanted equality and i think this  

is a good example of it backfiring yes it really  did backfire yes you see you know now we thought  

the men thought that you would lower it to  the same as women but unfortunately now women  

ladies you now have to work longer because  you wanted equality well in the uk that is  

oh yes i know yes that's very interesting because  there's been a lot of debate about wages disparity  

a difference okay between wages of men  and women doing the same jobs in the uk  

and it is still the case but not as bad as  it used to be that a man and a woman doing  

exactly the same job often the man is paid more  yes but the compensation i i suppose you could  

have said for that was that women get to retire  earlier and can take their state pension earlier  

but the wages now are very similar okay i'm not  saying it's completely the same but certainly  

the gap has been closed but unfortunately women  now have to retire at 65. so why don't i get paid  

the same as successful women on youtube you  see and that's sexist youtube that's sexism  

i i don't get as much there are lots of ladies  teaching english on youtube who get more than me  

so so that that's unfair that sexist that is  the the problem is that the retirement age well  

actually the retirement age because when you  get your state pension okay i mean you can  

retire whenever you like you can draw a pension  from the age of 55 if you've got a you know  

like a personal pension okay you can draw that  from 55 but you cannot now get a state pension  

until you're 67. well i can't depends on when you  were born uh so they changed it you used to be  

women used to get it at 60 men would get it  at 65 but a few years ago they changed that  

and depending on when you were born i can't so  i was born in 1961 so i can't i have to wait  

now till i'm 67 and so do women so it's gone up  from for a lot of women it's gone from 60 to 67  

okay whereas for men it's gone from 65 to 67  and the younger you are it's going to be even  

later so before long you'll be 70. so it's quite  late do you remember when we went used to go to  

malaysia mr duncan i'm sorry i'm boring you're  talking about pensions this is very boring but  

if you're nearing the retirement  age though it's quite interesting  

in malaysia i remember over there they could take  their pension at 55 a state pension yeah i don't  

know whether that's still the same if we've got  anybody watching in malaysia but it used to be  

state pension at 55 which shows how wealthy  malaysia must be if they could have afforded  

to do that and that was in 2000 in the year  2000. okay so interesting be interesting to  

know what the state retirement age is  for other countries watching us oh dear  

so yes it's quite late in this country yes but  then we do live a long time so the answer to  

the question seven minutes ago it's now the  same am i beating around the bush mr duncan  

yes that is a classic example of me beating  around the bush taking a long time to answer

that's very good um so i could go there now become  a citizen and retire yes because i am a course 60.

is testing your gull ability and uh well  you see the the trouble is snow earth aka uh

what's new earth of the name well just  a few seconds now i can't remember

that is the problem if you lie too many times  about something people will just not trust you  

cry wolf you will lose your credibility for  lying i'm going to assume that you have had it

it's another lie a white lie let's just say a fun  lie okay then we may have to ask the moderators  

to step in i don't think pretending to have  corona viruses is is a fun lie to be honest mia  

says i have a question i'm feeling shy and  stressed when speaking english what should i do  

take some deep breaths breathe in slowly for four  seconds and then out for eight seconds do that  

three times before you speak just to calm that  actually cuts off the stress response and now  

here's a sensible answer keep doing it anything  that you start doing that you feel nervous about  

or afraid to do do it realize what you said so  quite often quite often you should face your fears  

so if it's something that you've started doing  for the first time something you've started  

doing maybe you feel a little shy and awkward  and it's the same whatever we are talking about  

it's it's a bit like when i started doing my live  streams i felt awkward nervous but i kept doing it  

i carried on doing it and then suddenly i realized  that i enjoyed doing it so it's the same if you  

are trying to speak english if you are trying  to gain confidence don't give up keep doing  

it push yourself you have to learn sometimes  to actually push yourself further and further  

but of course the deep breaths are okay well if  you yes obviously what mr duncan is saying is  

practice practice practice and eventually you  will develop the confidence then you won't be  

as nervous yes but if you feel like really nervous  or tense before you're going to do something  

then that deep breathing exercise can really  work because it cuts off the stress response  

breathe in slowly for four seconds out for  eight seconds and do that three or four times  

and that will at least calm you and then you can  practice and then you can practice and practice  

and then you won't get stressed that's it as mr  duncan said the more you do something the more  

you enjoy it the more you enjoy it the more you  want to do it and the cycle will then continue  

what's next mr duncan what's next what's left well  we have flags of the world i was going to quickly  

look at some flags of the world not flags of the  world because it's in front of me on the screen  

you can't see this but my screen  has lots of things on it and the  

thing that's staring at me now is flags  of the world but it shouldn't be instead

but princess diana i don't think i've ever seen  anything like that no i don't think we ever will  

again maybe when the queen says goodbye maybe  but who knows well i think when when you know  

somebody is at the end of their life their natural  life okay then it doesn't come as a surprise  

particularly when that person has just spent four  weeks in hospital yes for a heart condition yes  

and if you're 99. but when said somebody and  when you're 99 that's what i mean but when  

princess diana died it was a big shock because it  was unexpected and it was violent yeah what what's  

yes that's it okay steve well this is a great  happiness show yes andy well you started it  

yes but it wasn't supposed to be you know i wasn't  giving an essay what is the meaning of disparage  

says nissan yeah go on then steve you used it i  did use it yes it just means if you say something  

bad against somebody if you criticize  or say something bad to about somebody  

to put someone down yes you disparage  somebody it means you criticize them

conspiracy theories ever was that prince philip  was supposed to have arranged the assassination  

of princess diana that was he was accused of  that can you believe it there were people out  

there who actually believe that he arranged what  happened on the 31st of august 1997. wasn't that  

a conspiracy theory put about by the father  of somebody who died also died i don't know  

i think you have to know the facts before you  say i think that is but i'm trying to say it  

without actually saying the name yeah okay uh you  know because few people died in that accident and  

one person that died father is quite famous  owned a big department store in london okay  

i think he was the one that came up with that  theory okay which hasn't been prude of course  

we will be very clear on that okay well steve  will anyway because he'll be the one getting sued  

but yeah it's cr but it's one of those one of  those strange conspiracy theories of course  

most people now think it isn't true and we don't  think about it anymore but i thought i thought  

it was interesting to mention it it's just a  tragic accident so we have some happiness words

thank you steve now when we talk about being happy

i really don't feel like it now by the way  we've just been talking about death okay  

to be cheerful or full of cheer i like that word  i i like i like meeting people who are cheerful  

and i think these days people take  things far too seriously would you  

say i think people take things too  seriously we are constantly looking  

for for problems we are looking for for being  maybe offended by something so i think i think  

these days people do try to be offended they  are looking to be upset and offended so to be  

cheerful to always look on the bright side of  things a cheery person smiling happy yes joking  

even if inside you're dying inside because  something terrible has happened to you  

you can be cheery on the outside and quite often  if you're cheering on the outside if you even if  

you fake it then it will actually cheer you  up on the inside apparently that's a that's a  

a well-known psychological sort of trick okay if  you are very unhappy i bet you pretend to be happy  

okay and it will actually it will actually  have an effect on your body so maybe better  

maybe you could try that sometime i was waiting  for that mr you could try it sometime steve  

try to be happy sometimes i can come on the live  stream and smile and be happy and then i'm boosted  

for the rest of the day boosted yes here's  another one it's cheerful the same as joyful  

well here we go we've got it now to feel joy to  be joyous or joyful yes you are full of happiness  

you are full of joy to feel joy is to feel  happiness you you are maybe happy about  

something maybe you've you've discovered  that you are going to have a baby  

or maybe you are about to adopt a child like mr  steve and myself something like that so you feel

nice to be dead to be underground iggy pop iggy  pop is a man who never wears clothes he he's he's  

whenever you see iggy pop he's he's always  semi-naked i don't know why he well he used  

to have a nice body but as he's got older it sort  of started to sag a bit he should cover up now but  

he's still covered he still insists on showing us  his tattoos even though you can't read them now  

that is the problem by the way if you have a  tattoo on your body when you're young it looks  

great but when you get older it's sort of it  sort of wrinkles up and it's like a screwed up  

newspaper you know when you throw a newspaper  away and you you you crunch the newspaper up  

well that's what the tattoo looks like when you're  about 80. the same you've never been asked this  

question before on a live stream okay yeah which  what tooth paste do i use what toothpaste yes

obviously i didn't think i was admiring my pearly  whites i didn't think you you used toothpaste well  

we i use a very cheap toothpaste it's very cheap  the cheapest one you can buy in fact because  

i i don't know i've just got naturally white  teeth they can't help it or strangely enough  

on the camera they don't look white they  look yellow oh i see so is nissa says  

niece are suggesting i think niece said  that i need to use a different toothpaste  

well i think i think that is actually because of  the lighting in the studio because you were just  

the color but my teeth are actually bright white  people have to put sunglasses on normally when  

they speak to me because all your teeth they're  so white they put sunglasses on and a bag over mr  

steve's head so yes maybe nissa is saying that  my toothpaste is not good enough and my teeth  

of course british people are renowned for having  very bad teeth yes the uh americans in particular  

always joke about british teeth because  they had our teeth are all misshapen and  

wonky steve don't they yeah all right i'm just  putting that across yes we've got to move on  

because we're doing we're doing in english so  then faster move on we're doing an english show  

to be in good spirits ah so this is an interesting  word actually spirits because spirits can refer to  

your mood or your feeling so a person's mood is  a person's spirit you are in good spirits you are  

in bad spirits and of course spirit can also mean  alcohol as well so i always think that's a great  

word because to be in good spirits it might be  that you're feeling happy because you are drinking  

but i always like i like that one okay we  don't need a monologue steve i think that  

is referring to sort of ghostly spirits isn't  it being happy spirits no good spirits your  

spirit is your feeling your emotions yes yes  i know yours it's nothing to do with ghosts  

oh i don't know i'm just putting it out there yes  i know only if it's accurate uh yes steve steve hi  

iggy pop's getting a mention yes again from  tomic okay then yes he looks great considering  

all the drugs he's consumed well that's exactly  what tomex says did you know you've read that  

no to be upbeat okay not beat up like mr steve  will be completely different if mr steve keeps  

talking he's going to be beat up which means to  be punched and hit and hit however if you are  

upbeat it means you are happy and cheerful  you are positive about something exactly

the jolly roger well there is the word now  jolly if you are jolly it means you are cheerful  

and happy a jolly person and i think everyone  knows someone who is always positive and happy  

a jolly person a jolly person if you associate  jollyness with sort of laughing a lot and moving  

and sort of jolly sort of it's different to  being happy isn't it it's a different phrase  

well it's a person who is always happy they  have a good character they are they're always  

positive when they walk into the room they  always make the room glow with happiness  

we're not talking about steve by the way  definitely not nope not anywhere when  

steve goes into the room they have to make  sure that there are locks on the windows

oh don't they take the locks  off so that i can get out  

no uh how about are you going to use this phrase  in the pink in the pink well i suppose in the pink  

means to be healthy so we often say in the pink  when we are talking about a person's health but  

it is a it is a fair point by the  way to say that a person who is happy  

quite often will feel healthy and we often  think of that happiness and health can be  

linked together quite closely jolly people are  either on drugs or mentally disturbed says tomic  

oh okay then so are you saying that you're not  a very jolly person which one are we well no  

i'm normally i would say i'm normally sort of  not jolly i'm not a jolly person oh you're a bit  

you can be a bit depressed morose yes the morose  you often look on the negative side of everything  

i do tend to my father said to me you're  a pessimist yes you're a pessimist you are  

yes he said that to me when i was about 10. oh i  said 10. you were you were you were pessimistic at  

10. i remember he i remember him distinctly  saying it to me he said you're a pessimist  

how can you be pessimistic at 10 i don't  know but obviously my father picked up on  

that how can your spirit be crushed at the age  of 10. amazing i can still remember him saying  

that and so i thought well okay if that's  what you're saying i am that's what i'll be  

uh so i've lived up to that ever since  yes you're doing a very good job of it you  

could say my father though was a was an eternal  optimist he was a very optimistic person he was  

he was a glass half full kind of guy  yes whereas i'm a glass half empty no no  

your glass is empty and smashed on the floor  true that is true and you've cut your fingers  

on the broken glass yes there's no water it never  was no water the glass is broken and and steve's  

got lots of cuts all over his fingers so that's  that's john mike if you've got any drugs then  

i'll come over and we can we can get jolly right  that that means all sorts of things but anyway

and maybe we can join uh sergio as well okay so  it's not the uh lesson i had planned by the way  

a bubbly person we all know someone who is bubbly  i suppose you could use the word jolly as well so  

a person who is jolly they are bubbly they are  always happy they always have a smile on their  

face yes anarchy there's a good i'm upbeat  about the end of the pandemic good one i like

all of the shops are opening i i believe  that the pubs and the bars are going to  

start opening as well over the next few days so  yes everything is slowly turning it is slowly
