who are much more needy.

Whenever we need to express a desire for something,

perhaps something we feel we need or a thing we want.

Then there are many ways of describing this action.

Today, I will take you through all the ways

of expressing the emotional desire for something

using want, need, give,

take, lend, borrow and steal.

Each of these words expresses

a different type of giving and receiving.

first of all, we will look at the word want.

What's the word

want is both a verb and now as a verb?

It shows the desire for something quite often a strong desire for an item or thing

that is seen as bringing pleasure or satisfaction to the one who wants it.

A person might want to do something

they feel the desire to go someplace or meet someone.

We often describe the action

of want as a wish or desire.

Something you feel you want will often

be wished for or desired.

I want to go to Paris for a holiday.

I want to see you next weekend.

I want to buy some new clothes.

I want to buy a new car.

I want to go for a walk.

These sentences all express

a desire for something or a wish for something.

The thing I wanted is not important

or even necessary, but it is wanted.

The thing you desire is what you want.

The thing you wish for is what you want.

The exact time

between something being wanted and being received.

Can vary depending on the situation.

You might want something right now.

You want it immediately.

You do not want to wait for it.

You might want something in the future when the time is right.

You don't mind waiting.

There is no hurry.

Want can also be used as a noun.

The state of wanting something is want

to be in a situation where a person wishes or desires.

We often view WAN'T as a negative action,

because quite often the thing desired might seem

unnecessary or pointless,

a petulant child might want a new toy , even though they have received

many new toys already wanting something might be seen

as selfish or self-centred.

A millionaire might want to make more money than they do now.

A person with lots of expensive clothing might always

want the latest styles of fashion, so they will always want more

new clothes.

want with the next word, which is need,

just like the previous word, want can be used as both a verb

and a now as a verb.

The word need means to require something as a necessity rather than a desire.

That is to say the thing is vital and important.

It is needed.

You need it.

It is vitally important.

A starving person will need to eat.

They need food.

They must have it.

An unhealthy person will need exercise.

They need exercise.

They must have it.

A thirsty person will need refreshment.

They need water.

They must have it.

A poor person will need assistance.

They need money.

They must have it.

So when we talk about want and need,

it is worth noting that one is not necessarily important or life saving

while the other is want

can be pure, real and wasteful,

while need is often crucial and vital.

We can also use need as a noun.

There is too much need in the world.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

A person's needs are the essential things

they need to live and survive.

A person might become too demanding and always be in need of something.

We might describe this person as needy.

This word can be used both positively and negatively.

A needy child or a friend that always needs help

and attention is needy.

A needy child or friend can also be expressed

negatively as over demanding

and annoying.

Oh, next word is give,

which is a verb means to freely transfer the possession of something to someone

you might give someone a present.

The offer is one that does not need anything in return.

A free thing is something you give

with no charge to offer something to.

Another person is give.

You will give it, you give it,

you gave it, you have given it.

We can also say give away.

This also means that there is no charge

or cost involved in the exchange.

It is being given away.

A low price for something or a generous offer

might be described as a giveaway.

The word give can also describe the flexibility

and strength of something a person might give in or give up,

which means that someone has decided to quit or surrender.

A person might give their all, which means to put all one's effort

into doing something, you give it your all.

Our next word is take,

which can also be used as a verb or now

as a verb.

The word take can refer to the action of laying hold of something.

one uses their hand or hands to take hold of an item.

You take a biscuit from the plate,

you take your shoes out of the box.

You take your groceries out of the bag.

To take can also refer to accepting an offer

something offered is accepted.

You take it.

You take the money offered to you.

You take the job offer

you have taken it.

The word take can also be used negatively to mean steal.

You take something that does not belong to you.

This means that a person is stealing

We will look at the next two words at the same time

as they are closely connected and often confused with each other.

The words are lend and borrow.

Even native English

speakers will get these words confused with each other.

first of all, the word lend is a verb, which means to give something

to someone for a short or limited amount of time.

That is to say, you are allowing another person to use the item in question

with the understanding that it will be returned

afterwards at a later date.

You might lend someone your lawnmower,

you have lent it to them.

You might lend your friends some money with the understanding that it will be paid back later.

You have lent it to them to offer or give assistance to.

Someone can be described as lending a hand.

one person will lend a hand to another.

Can you lend a hand carrying in these heavy shopping bags?

So the word lend relates to

something given such as an item or assistance,

but only for a short time until it is no longer needed.

The next word is borrow,

which can be described as the opposite of Lent in the sense of it

being the reverse of giving something for a short time.

The word borrow means to take something for a short period of time.

The thing will be used and then given back to the owner.

one person will borrow something from someone else

for a short period of time.

The lender is giving while

the borrower is taking or receiving.

This agreement is always temporary.

Can I borrow your lawnmower?

Can I borrow £20 until my next salary?

My neighbour wants to borrow my lawnmower for a couple of days.

Many people often confuse the two words with each other.

But as long as you remember that lend is give and borrow is take.

Then there should be no confusion.

It is also worth remembering that sometimes when you lend something to a person,

occasionally you never get it back.

It is never returned.

Finally,

we have the word steel, which can be used as a verb

and now to take something from another person

without asking them first is steel.

one person will steal from another.

A burglar might break into your house and steal your jewellery.

A thief steals to take something from another person

without them realising or being aware of it is steal.

A thief will steal the item has been stolen.

A thief steals from others

to use another person's method

or idea can be described as stealing.

Your sweetheart might be stolen

from you by another person.

or bargain can be described as a steal.

The price is so low

it is almost like you are stealing it.

My new car was a steal, so I had to buy it.

This offer is so good, it's a steal.
