oh hello there here we go again yes sunday has returned once more

how is your week being has it been a good one I really really hope it has

coming up today we have lots of things to talk about including words and

expressions to do with the word word really yes that's what I'm going to do

also mr. Steve will be here talking about his favorite subject we are

talking cars the shape of cars and also the different functions that each car

model and shape has and we will be talking about the differences between

the words arse and ass naughty mr. Duncan and which ones are used in

American English and which ones are used in British English because sometimes

there is a difference the live chat will be here as well and today I need your

help and support because we are trying to get my youtube

channel up to 1 million subscribers during the month of May yes

let's make it a million in the month of May and I will need your help don't

we have a public holiday here in the UK so tomorrow

everyone is having it off yes tomorrow it's an extra day off everyone

apparently now no one knows why this is the case but tomorrow is the May Day

bank holiday don't ask me why because it isn't May the 1st tomorrow it's May the

6th so I don't really understand why we are having made a holiday tomorrow oh I

have the most delicious cup of coffee here in my hand right now do you have a

hot beverage do you like to watch my livestream whilst drinking something

nice and refreshing I have a cup of coffee here although I must admit it

isn't as nice is the coffee that I tried in Paris last week yes I was in Paris

but now we are back here in the UK oh so many things to show you today we have a

packed program this program is more packed than Tom Daley's speedo

that's how packed it is it really is can I just have a slurp of my coffee whilst

it's still hot hmm hmm did you enjoy that sound today we're going to talk

about quite a few things today as I choked on my coffee we are going to talk

about Star Wars yesterday it was May the 4th and every

year we celebrate Star Wars a so yesterday everyone was saying may

the 4th be with you it's a little joke you see it's a play on words also we had

some sad news last week the actor the performer Peter Mayhew who played

Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy sadly died so a lot of people

were feeling a little down about that so yesterday's may the 4th be with you

had a little poignant sad tinge to it but today we're talking about something

very special if you could be any Star Wars character if you could be any Star

Wars character from the original films or the prequels or maybe the latest

installments of Star Wars which Star Wars character would you like to be so

that's one of the questions I want to have fun today there's too much bad news

in the world at the moment so I thought today we would have a little bit of fun

a little bit of laughter some smiles along the way as well also coming up

today what is a.s.m.r this is the trend that is taking the internet by storm

apparently it's all about getting very close to the microphone and making

English on the 5th of May 2019 an extra long weekend just to prove how relaxed I

am today look can you see what I'm wearing I'm not wearing

anything formal below my waist and just to prove it there it is look can you see

so I'm wearing my pyjama trousers today doo doo doo just have a little move

around there to keep the blood circulating in my legs so there you can

see I'm wearing my pyjama trousers and also my lovely multicolored socks and my

big slippers that mr. Steve brought for me last Christmas so there I'm looking

very relaxed below the waist so I like to reveal these things sometimes I think

it is very interesting to show these things off so so I thought yes I thought

you would appreciate that you see so I'm feeling very relaxed and very cool below

the waistline I hope you're having a super weekend we are having a nice one

here can I show you some lovely sights now this is one of the sites that I

filmed out of my studio window this morning so here it is look at that oh my

goodness what a beautiful sight there it is looking over towards the Welsh Hills

you can see the beautiful green grass and also the yellow of the rapeseed as

well and lots of sheep walking across the field in the distance there you can

see right now a very typical English countryside view looking over across the

beautiful landscape of Shropshire a lot of people ask where do you live mr.

Duncan a little bit later on I will take you on a little tour of the place in

which I live we will be having a look around later on by the way this is what

the view from the window looks like now so there it is now a live view out of

the window and you can see the sheep are still there in the field it's a very

overcast cold day apparently tomorrow we are supposed to

some snow I can't believe it so here we are in the first week of May and already

they are saying that we are going to have snow I can't believe it some people

have asked mr. Duncan how are your spiders do you still have your spiders

yes we still have the spiders would you like to have a quick look at the spiders

so here they are they are still in the house we are taking care of these

spiders so there you can see one of the spiders in its little glass case and

they are still alive and well even though originally there were three of

them but one of them died so now there are only two so there is one of them and

oh dear it's coming towards me and there is the other one

so these are the two remaining spiders that we have we are taking care of them

for mr. Steve's friend to be honest with you I'm getting a little sick and tired

of looking after them because we've had them for over a year for over a year

we've been looking after these spiders so just in case mr. Steve's friend is

watching can you please come and collect your spiders we were supposed to only

have them for three weeks and it's been over a year please take your spiders

back I'm not joking please take your spiders back we have

the live chat up and running today Oh shall we have a look at the live chat

because I haven't mentioned it yet and people do get a little annoyed if I

don't mention the live chat so there it is but the big question is who was first

a naughty word let's have a quick look at two words that are often used in the

English language and there they are I'm sure some people will complain about

this but there they are you'll be amazed how often these two words are used you

have ass and arse can you see them on the screen right now the first one ass

generally is used in the United States it's used in American English so quite

often you will hear people say ass so a person can be a bit of an ass what an

ass a person who is foolish or an idiot or

contemptible is an ass and in British English we often say arse arse

so in American English sometimes they say ass in British English we often say

arse having said that it is not unusual for people in British English to also

you the American ass it's true so how do you

use ass how do you say it how do you use it in a sentence well there are many

ways to use the words ass and ass a person can be a pain in the ass an

annoying person who gets on your nerves can be described as a pain in the ass

they are a pain in the ass in American English or in British English they can

be a pain in the arse an annoying person a person who really gets on your nerves

some people might say that mr. Duncan is a pain in the arse that's not very nice

another one this is an insult you can call a person an asshole or an asshole a

person who again is an idiot foolish contemptible a person you hate a person

who is loathsome a person who is annoying you can describe them as an

asshole or an asshole I can't believe I'm doing this

another one Oh mr. Duncan we can call someone an asswipe or an asswipe once

again it is used to describe a contemptible person a person who is

loathsome or annoying we can say that mr. Duncan is such an asswipe it's not

very nice is it I'm sure no one's saying that here is

another one you can have your ass handed to you or you can have your ass handed

to you this means that you have failed miserably

someone has defeated you in a very dramatic way or maybe they have one

maybe a contest or a competition and you have lost dramatically they have won

and you have lost you have had your ass handed to you or you have had your ass

handed to you sometimes we say on a plate so you can have your ass handed to

you on a plate and finally you can simply say he's an ass or he's an arse a

person again who is very contemptible a person who is annoying a person who gets

on your nerves you can describe them as an ass or you can describe them as an

ass there they are two interesting words that are used a

lot in English so in American English as in British English we say arse but quite

often we also say ass as well I hope my live stream is not too much of a pain in

the arse would you like to have a quick look around much when Locke we are going

to have a little look around the place in which I live because many people ask

mr. Duncan can you show us some of the sights around the place in which you

live and my answer to that is all right then after that it's mr. Steve many

people ask me mr. Duncan where do you live well I thought today it'd be a good

chance for you to have a look in the place I live because it's such a

beautiful day today so here it is here is the place in which I live it's much

Wenlock in Shropshire one of the most beautiful places in England and if you

haven't been here my question is why not can you see what's over there

that is the local Undertaker they are the people responsible for arranging

funerals they help to dispose of dead people it's a rather sobering thought

that one day those people will be putting me in the ground

if there's one thing I really love about a day like this it's the gentle calming

breeze just a very gentle breeze blowing in the air helping to keep me nice and

cool the word breeze can be used in many ways of course it is the gentle wind

cooling and refreshing as it blows by a very gentle breeze just like today

really there is a lovely summer breeze in the air keeping me nice and cool also

breeze can mean to do something very easily

I passed my exam yesterday it was easy in fact it was a breeze something that

is very easy to do something that you found easy to do can be described as a

breeze to move gently maybe into a room or out of a room or in front of a group

of people to suddenly appear can be described as breeze he breathed into the

room with complete confidence

now there is a very interesting place a gate to a secret garden a place that is

unknown and never seen by anyone just like the story have you ever read that

story it's called the secret garden it's a brilliant story full of adventure

excitement mystery and of course a little bit of fantasy as well we all

like a little bit of fantasy in our lives from time to time

do you recognize this place this is where I did my famous poodle dance but

as you can see the poodle has now gone the water has disappeared it's so hot at

the moment the puddle has completely evaporated

it might sound like a strange thing to say but due to making these English

lessons for you my life changed completely and here is what happened way

back in 2012 I made a special lesson right here in Much Wenlock talking all

about the origins of the modern Olympic Games and I fell in love with this place

I loved it so much I ended up moving here and so did mr. Steve the field

behind me is where every year the Wenlock games are held and this very

place was the inspiration for the modern Olympic Games that we all know now

here is an interesting phrase that you might hear used quite often in English

the phrase is cross the line

if you cross the line it means you have gone too far you have done something

that has upset many people or one person you have crossed the line up until a

certain point what you were saying or doing was okay but you had to go too far

you had to cross the line you went from being okay to offensive you went from

being acceptable to unacceptable you crossed the line I must be honest it is

absolutely baking hot today I can't believe I've been outside for the past

four hours filming in this heat this intense heat I think it's fair to say

that we will all remember the summer of 2018 and can you see behind me look

everywhere is scorched the Sun has dried all the grass all of the trees all of

the bushes everything looks parched and tinder-dry

and that is one of the reasons why there are many wildfires breaking out at the

moment including here in the UK and more recently in Greece

if you remember earlier in the year I showed you this field I showed you all

of the yellow flowers that were blooming in this field

this is rapeseed so everything you see behind me is rapeseed and now as the

seeds come out you can see now that we have small seed pods and inside these

are the rape seeds and these will be gathered very soon and then they will be

compressed and all of the oil will be extracted and that is rapeseed oil but

as you can see once again the theme is very similar this whole field is now

very dry very arid and perhaps I'm not a hundred percent certain but perhaps this

whole crop has been ruined by the hot weather although if I just have a look

inside this pod yes you can see all of the rape seeds can you see them there

they are very tiny black seeds and that is where the rapeseed oil will come from

animals didn't we along the way a lot of animals lots of animals and they were

all together so we decided to join in with with what was going on and we ended

up doing some filming and we captured some lovely moments so please everyone

oh my goodness Steve Steve what what can you say well I do like interacting with

animals it's lovely I know what it is I've got the neighbor's dog which I go

around to see on a Sunday and that animals seem to love me I saw I ran to

see that the neighbor's dog and it just it doesn't stop fussing me I normally go

around have a chat for an hour but to the dog with the owner because she's not

very well and that the dog just won't leave me alone the whole of the time I'm

there I think it just wants to go for a walk but it's wagging its tail

continuously I go out into the field and there's a horse I think they're all in

love with me early which of course is perfectly understandable mr. dink and of

course you are used to actually being surrounded by dumb animals

that's true one in particular I had to wash that I was wearing like a top

wasn't I like a like a like a warm jacket yes like a like a coat like a

count yes a warm of warm sort of woolly jacket

but the horse had slobbered slobbered all over it the shamino got saliva all

over my every time it sort of nestled up against me I got it was covered in the

horses saliva yeah we both we both came back home yesterday covered covered in

horse spit so we they had to go in the washing machine straightaway I said spit

yes yes saliva yes slobber if you slobber somebody it means you you

you you sort of kiss them a lot with your mouth and yet saliva everywhere yes

if you slobber somebody it means you put saliva all over them yes you can you can

also affliction away that's it you can also give someone a slobbery kiss yes a

wet kiss yes slobbery horse was slobbering me yesterday yes well I think

I think there is a law against that thank goodness we were showing the

spiders earlier Steve we still have the spiders damn spiders okay let me just

let me just finish my sentence before you into

jekt so yes we have the spider still here

there they are Steve we're trying to kill them actually

sorry starving them to death no actually can I just say we're not trying to

starve the spiders to death trust me it's okay Steve said oh you'll only have

them for three weeks and it's probably about well it's over a year and we're

sick to death of them because I have to keep going to buy them live crickets to

eat you forgetting we have to feed them the crickets stink in the cages so I

just want to get rid of them in fact I'm going to I don't know if he's watching

very much down at it but I'm going to give him an ultimatum an ultimatum I'm

gonna either it gets take them off my hands or I'm going to sell them yes or

flush them down the toilet mister don't go we're not going to do

that I don't know will fit no you did suggest doing something with a knitting

needle of course the thing is the thing that I really will regret when they go

is I'll have no one to blame my stinky farts on because I used to blame the

spiders you see so if if ever if ever I left I let a little Polly out of prison

I always blame it on the spiders I said no it wasn't me it was the spiders did

hey if you were a Star Wars character mr. Steve which Star Wars character

would you be what which which one would you be Oh blimey I don't know has

suppose Luke Skywalker that's too obvious well alright then han Solo my TV

got killed so no maybe not well Princess Leia she's dead okay

whoa keyed the bookies 200 years old he's still alive so alright I'll be the

bookie actually ironically of all the people you said we were dead that the

wookie is also dead because the actor playing him died last week

so character is still very much alive if if I was a Star Wars character

Steve I would definitely be c-3po I think so because he's fussy he's timid

he's a little bit effeminate so so I think definitely if I if I was a Star

Wars character I would definitely be c-3po there I am look how clever mr.

Duncan Oh clever sorry no I do a very good impression of c-3po well that's not

for you to judge oh oh is that it that's it that's my well okay let's hear yours

well I didn't claim that I could make impressions oh particularly that's c3

that is it's very I think my impression of c-3po is very good oh that's it well

which character Steve would be and it would be definitely yeah Jar Jar Binks

adjectives very annoying missa missa a bit racist actually it's a

bit of a racist character when you think about it so I think definitely Steve

Jar Jar Binks and the disturbing thing is I didn't have to alter that

photograph at all that literally is a photograph of mr. Steve as he normally

looks be somebody evil well John it's a Palpatine or something like that yes the

Emperor yes I don't get me the Emperor yeah take them away

shut up the Emperor is coming back for the next Star Wars film I thought it was

dead no that's it well nobody knows how I think I think the Emperor will

actually come back as as a hologram or some sort of spirit so I I don't think

he will be there in the flesh I think he will be there is a sort of hologram so

do you remember in the original Star Wars films they had they had Ben Kenobi

and also they had also Darth Vader and Yoda they all ended up appearing as

ghosts so I think that there will be an evil ghost and that will be old Senator

Palpatine that's what I think anyway so which dar Wars character would you

like to be so Steve is Jar Jar Binks and my choice I am c-3po yeah yeah I think

my impressions are very good satury know says that my friend has dumped the

spiders on me you I think you are absolutely right I think you are

absolutely right I think he's been stringing me along telling me little

fibs saying that he's going to buy a house and then I can give him the

spiders back but in fact I don't think he's got any intention of doing so I do

like the way you criticize your friends on the livestream well I'm going to do

it to his face next time I see him in fact I think I'm just going to take the

spiders with me can't you just just say here they are

yeah take him away you can put them through his letterbox yes but um yeah

anyway I think I'm gonna sell them I'm gonna sell them on eBay and keep the

money because they've cost me about 50 pounds to keep for the last 12 months in

fact you've done most of the looking after that's he spiders fence has he

even offered a meal out any compensation let me look after somebody spiders for

12 to 12 months since you should be you should have some kind

of you know some some sort of sign of reading that you've done this recompense

most of the looking after in the taking care of the spiders because I'm here a

lot of the time working so and that's the reason why we don't have a dog is

because I would end up having to take care of the dog all the time so there

quite happy with today's subject yes we're talking about cars types of cars

now when I say types of cars we are not talking about the models or the makes so

there you can see lots of different makes of cars any any you recognize

there Steve any of them all of them is to mr. Duncan out of what Jackie's have

never seen that one before so which is your favorite my favorite probably would

be that's a difficult one because I I do tend to flit yeah I suppose if there was

one brand that I would that I would be keen to stick with it's probably

and this is where you make sounds very close to a microphone and apparently

motor cars also we're going to take a look at some words and phrases that can

be used using the word word would you like to have a look at some of those now

Steve we can do they J'son 100 how are you mr. Duncan first time - right here

oh okay but we'd like it when you people right and so please write some more and

ask us questions because we're always trying to encourage aren't we mr. Duncan

new people - right we get a lot of regular contributors on the live chat

but we'd like to see new people contributing so thank you very much for

that and welcome to the live chat mm-hmm yes I've got some words phrases and

idioms that use the word word and is something different today yes and there

are lots of them mr. Duncan there are lots of them here's one good word a good

word if you say good word it means it's a favorable comment

it's a prefix that you use just before something so you might say will you put

in a good word for me at the job interview so if you say to somebody will

you put a good word in for me it means you're asking them to say something to

somebody else to try and help you in whatever that thing

is say you were you you wanted to go for a job interview and and at work but and

you had a friend that knew the boss and you might say oh can you put a good word

in for me I really want to get that job it just means they're going to say some

favorable comments in your support you might say the other way around it can be

used in the negative way you might say for example you've never got a good word

to say about anyone if you say that somebody you've what's the matter with

you you've never got a good word to say about anyone it means that you always

criticizing people and are not supporting them in any way so you can

use that in the positive way where you are saying some positive things about

somebody or you can say it in a negative way that's quite common isn't it to say

oh I haven't got a good word to say about that person we use that a lot it's

um it's somebody you don't like and somebody asks you you might say oh I

haven't got a good word to say about them so we're in this particular

situation a good word is just a kind comment about someone can come right or

in the news in the negative it means you don't like them very much yes can I have

a word with ooh if you say in a sentence can I have a word with with something or

somebody it means you're having a brief conversation you want to have a brief

conversation with somebody and but it's usually it worries you if somebody comes

up to you and says can I have a word with you please in that tone can I have

a word with you please that I'll take you to one side it

usually means they've got something uncomfortable to tell you yes can I have

a word with you mr. Duncan yeah have you washed today oh dear

thanks yes I have I've washed all of my little nooks and crannies can I have a

word with you please now I've had a complaint somebody said

something you you you you that you shattered it

somebody in the office the other day is that true you never want your boss to

ask to come into the office because I I want to have a word with you

you never want that because quite often it's something bad or negative in fact

if somebody comes up to you and says can I have a word with you you automatically

assume it's something bad and your first response would be oh what am I done that

should usually your first response particularly if it's somebody in

authority you can say can I have a quick word with you can I have a word with you

can I have a quick word with you it might not be anything bad but usually

people assume it is and it depends on the tone that's used you might be it

might be oh can i how can i have a word with you you know that new chap that

we've employed in the office as he doing is he any good you don't want anyone

else to know it's something just between you and that person can I have a word

with you can i if you do something word-for-word something if you use that

in a conversation word for word it means you're you're literally expecting to

hear exactly what was said so that's in a conversation for example you might say

yeah tell me word for word exactly what happened

tell me word for word it means you want the exact explanation of what happened

or the exact words or conversation that was said tell me exactly what she said

to you it means you don't you want to know exactly so that it can be accurate

and that's usually used when quite often in in a in an aggressive way as well

tell me exactly what she said what do you think mr. Duncan what do I think you

took the words out of my mouth you took the words right out of my mouth like it

well you took the words out of my mouth brilliant

that means that just means that your your is you're saying to somebody if you

say oh you took the words right out of my mouth it means somebody's just said

something that you were thinking hmm and and you were about to say exactly the

same thing probably in an observation of something yes so you might say you might

summon sometimes it's used when you you wanted to say something but you were

afraid to say it or maybe cautious in saying it because

it might not have been maybe appropriate to say that particular comment maybe

about somebody's appearance for example yeah somebody might walk into a room and

they're and they're dressed very inappropriately for for where they are

and you might you might want to say something but you don't and then

somebody else says I can't believe she's dressed like that you might say you've

just taken the words right out of my mouth hmm

it's something obvious that's happened but you don't you you refrain from

commenting but then somebody else does yes and you say huh well you took the

words right out of my mouth so basically another person vocalizes

what you are thinking yes what you were thinking or sometimes what you were

about to say yes so they can actually preempt the thing that you were about to

say so they say it just before you do that's right you took the words right

out of my mouth have no words for to be unable to find words to describe

something if you've got if you say this in a sentence

I've got no words for something it means you've been shocked by something and you

just can't think of the words to say I have no words to describe how bad I feel

about you right now somebody's done something to you don't

like it you shocked I've got no words to describe how you

made me feel the other night there are no words to describe how awful this

situation is so you shocked you you can't even think of the words

it's beyond words so it really does show just how deeply you were offended or

upset by that action because you can't find the words to express your feelings

mum's the word we've had that one in previous week we

think we seem to use this one every week because we were using words connected

with mum so mums the word just means that you telling somebody to keep a

secret for example you might say to somebody oh I've heard that John and

Lise are getting married ah mum's the word mums the word don't

say anything keep it to yourself keep it to yourself right sometimes we use this

phrase in a sentence in a word because you want to say something you want to

say something short in summary so you might say in a word no to punctuate

something that you want to say say you wanted to somebody kept asking you if

you'd go out for a date with them and they keep asking you and then eventually

you might say or they might come out yourself come on you can't come why

don't you come out with a date with me you might say in a word no that's not

very nice in other words you really don't want to and you're making a point

of it by using that phrase never ask mr. Steve for a date because he might be

very blunt with his reply in a word this situation is serious the word being

serious but usually usually you use it in a word no to mean you don't really

don't want to do something and use that phrase to sort of accentuate your

feelings around your decision to say no to it and so an example could be

somebody's keeps asking you out oh do you know do you know shall we fly to the

moon in a word no you can use it in a funny way that might be the worst

example I've ever heard thing on the planet and the moon oh I

tell you what um oh this project at work it's it's really difficult can you work

can you take it over for me and you might say in a word no Do It Yourself

it's a very it's a very good way of being blunt yes you've been below but

but you're not really being rude it's very strange you're kind of reinforcing

the fact that you don't want to do something but but it's not it's not too

blunt so maybe you could use it if you are turning a person down who keeps

asking asking you to go on a date with them yes you you you you you you've just

been very blunt and you might be annoyed because the same things been asked to

you several times before or they're the sort of person that's always sort of

taking the Mickey trying to use people trying to get think get you to do things

for them and you really probably don't really like them very much

another one in so many words in so many words

so jon said that he has broken up with his wife oh well he didn't say that in

so many words but I got the impression that you know things weren't going too

well you normally say that when you might have revealed some information

that is and you suddenly realize you've revealed some information which is all

you probably shouldn't have done and or you're not sure and you use that phrase

or well they didn't say that in so many words but I got the impression that is

the common way that you would tend to use that yes you are actually

paraphrasing something that you've heard but you're not actually using the exact

words or the things that actually occurred you you kind of come to a

conclusion about something so it might be correct it might be incorrect in so

many words you might have been having a conversation you work for example in the

business hasn't been going very well everyone's beginning to think

maybe the company's going to fold up and you might say well saw the boss the

other day and well he said a few things to me and the other person might say oh

did what you mean the company's going to close and you might and then you might

reply Mike while he didn't say so in so many words but I got the impression that

that is what's going to happen so you're not sure about a situation so you use a

phrase well in stuff you didn't say that in so many words but I mean that could

be said in court as well for example if if you were being questioned about

something somebody might say oh so you think he killed him do you and you might

say well I didn't say that in so many words you know so you're not sure you

sort of retracting almost retracting what you said okay another one of few

words other do you have any of the the ones that I wrote down for you but you

mean the ones that you wrote down for I did I did write out a list of a few

words we're doing this one now mr. Duncan where's my list in a word no a

few words if a person is of few words it means they just don't say very much and

quite often if you in a group with a group of people and somebody doesn't say

very much and then they wander off you might somebody might said well

what's wrong with John and you said well he's a man of few words and you get that

or she's a woman of few words you get people like that who don't say very much

who don't interact in a social way in conversation and has described them as a

person of few words or they might be a person of action rather than words well

I'm not using it in that context so I'm just explaining the other context so yes

commonly it was a man of few words but of course we've got to be politically

correct now and somebody asked a question earlier and asked her to

explain what political correctness is and that is when

you have to for example that that's example there the phrase a man a few

words you couldn't just use that now some

would accuse you of being maybe sexist why did why do you just say a man of few

words what about a woman a few words if you said what a woman a few words and

that's being politically correct you're saying things in order to please

everybody what about a dog a few words yes dogs are happy because they're not

being recognized leave the dogs out they will be protesting they will be marching

in their little with their little yellow collars anymore do you want to break

from that mr. Duncan we have a little break because there's something else I

want to mention and that's the thing we talked about just now now this is the

thing Steve that I'm going to promote through the whole of this month and it

here almost as much as the viewers mr. Steve so we are going to talk about

something different cars Steve a lot of people are talking about cars on the

live chat would appear that a lot of people want to talk about cars today

Wow lewis said that he used to own a Mercedes but now he only does 4000

kilometres a year driving which is about the same as my mother

so obviously he doesn't get to drive very much anymore they last forever

Mercedes that they're built to last forever hmm in fact most modern cars

will will easily do to 300,000 miles yes with the rust problems been solved in

cars they don't go rusty no they've all got varying levels of reliability but

most modern cars will easily do to 300,000 miles whereas people get very

nervous but I don't know if it's all around the world but in this country if

your car's done three years or and 60,000 miles the cars than 60,000 miles

people think I've got to get rid of it it's going to break down but it's

rubbish it won't it'll go on it's probably not even a quarter the way

through its life but people get very afraid now about cars getting over 60

this sort of barrier for a lot of people now true in the 70s and 80s if a car had

reached 40,000 miles it was clapped out and was prone to be unreliable but

modern cars are very reliable now and if you look after them have them have them

serviced then they'll last for a long time although different makes have got

their different foibles haven't they they've all got their different little

foibles French cars for example a renowned for having electrical problems

in the UK that's one of the things that there

down for being unreliable for his electrics particularly per shows that's

just something that you know that if you buy a Peugeot it's likely to go wrong

with its electrics you very rarely hear anyone say anything bad about Mercedes

so that's kind of the car that you are warming to because you have one now it's

one of these weird newfangled hybrid things it's oh it's it makes some very

strange noises as well when whenever Steve leaves the house in the morning it

always sounds like an old steam train starting our milk float it makes some

very strange sounds your car by the way when you started up well I've only got

it because it saves on tax saves on income tax if you have if you have a

hybrid car then the tax laws in this country say that you save on on company

car tax because it's a company car and in fact I pay it makes a huge difference

you know if I was to drive around in a normal diesel car which has been popular

for decades but suddenly are not popular anymore because of environmental factors

ivory paying probably 300 pounds a year in income tax that's a huge amount of

money probably 250 300 pounds a year in income tax to have a diesel car in the

UK or as if I have a hybrid car it's half that amount still cheaper than

running your own car but still a lot of money so I don't want a hybrid car

because it's feels heavy it doesn't drive as nicely as the non

hybrid version but you're forced into it as a company car driver in order to save

150 pounds a month that's good in income tax I say Meeker is here I like to drive

a car but I'm not are but but not on the highway so I suppose when you say the

highway mate maybe you mean the the motorway or the freeway

especially in Tokyo because it's very complicated well we we were in Paris

last weekend we were amazed at how chaotic the roads are in the center of

Paris we couldn't believe just how chaotic it is there Anna is here oh the

light rain sounds good but heavy rain is scary that might be the sound you see of

light rain and heavy rain I think so Lilia says what is a hybrid car ah so a

normal car would have a petrol engine or a diesel engine as its as its source of

power and then of course you've got electric cars which just run purely on

it on with with batteries and and an electric motor but halfway between the

two you've got a mix a hybrid means a mix so it's a mix of an engine and

electric power hmm so you've got the two together so when

you're in the town you can run using run the car using the batteries so it

doesn't it doesn't emit any noxious gases from the exhaust pipe and then

when you're out and about on the highway then you can use the the engine and the

car automatically works out when to do it the problem with hybrid cars is that

they they're very heavy the batteries weigh a lot and you're lucky if you get

twenty miles out of a charge of the batteries and there are compromise

they're a compromise car they're a halfway house because the industry and

governments around the world are trying to move everybody into electric cars

who is it supposedly cleaner and better than the environment so the stopgap the

other sort of fill in solution to that is a hybrid car yes which is a mix of

the two but you've carrying a heavy engine a

heavy internal combustion engine and heavy batteries at the same time that's

a so they're in a very inefficient yes too much weight so yeah okay on the live

that we have a lot of people wanting to say hello and add their part to the

conversation if I can get the actual stream to remove the ice right there

Mohammed says I am afraid to drive a car even though I've had a driving licence

since 2005 mm-hmm so what is Luis said yes I know Luis just said I think he's

still got his old Mercedes oh and it's done a million kilometres Wow is that

right Luis have you still got that Mercedes and it's done a million

kilometres it's not incredible that's incredible what's that in miles

it's probably about six hundred thousand miles I would say they just go on and on

don't they Luis they are renowned for it Mercedes they cost more to start off

with but if you keep them for a long time yeah it's they're much cheaper in

the long run because they just last forever mm-hmm

hybrid cars are environmentally friendly says Mohammed depends on how you look at

it and the batteries of course mr. Duncan's always talking about that the

batteries that go into these hybrid cars the lithium-ion batteries you have to do

a lot of mining in in poor countries to get these these metals out of the ground

to make these batteries yes I'm not sure about poor countries but it is in China

and also the place the place where they mine a lot of the rare earth is actually

in the place where I used to live when I lived in China can you believe it so all

of the technology that we use nowadays a lot of it relies on certain types of

minerals and rare earth and most of that comes from China did you know that and

yes and the pollution associated with that mica says she's got a hybrid car

Honda but she had to change the battery after two years yeah well that's

something that you have to do quite often with the hybrid cars the batteries

don't last very long hopefully that was covered under your warranty yes his it's

almost as bad as having a mobile phone if you buy a new mobile phone these days

you find that the battery only lasts for a couple of years and then you have to

replace it and yes let's hope it was covered by the warranty otherwise it

would have been very expensive indeed and you lose a lot of boot space you

lose a third of your boot space by having a hybrid car because the

batteries are in the boot and you can't get so much in not to mention the weight

not to mention the weight blimey it's 43 degrees in India at the moment that is

hot and of course they've had some terrible monsoons and hurricanes lots of

storms across the I think it's the southeast of India that has caused all

sorts of chaos and wreaked havoc across that part of India so so a big hello to

all those watching in India and I hope you are okay today as well as you can be

considering what's your favourite word in English says don Gardini Oh have you

got a favorite word do I have a favorite word

there are so many there are there are there are millions of words millions of

ways of using words millions of sentences I don't know they're all great

I love every single word in the English language they're all SuperDuper my

favorite word is car of course I'm talking of which Steve we are now going

to take a look at some cars some types of car so these aren't makes or

manufacturers these are actually the shapes of the cars so the way in which

the car looks and in some cases their characteristics so we are going to take

a little look I think mr. Steve you will enjoy this very much I hope everybody

else does too I think so I don't think that that's not going to happen so here

we go let's have a look at some cars and we are now going to start off with the

first one on and it's coming on the screen right

now so there it is Steve that's the little

Fiat isn't it okay yes we're not what I'm not worried

about the the manufacturer yes it's a compact a small car I think they call it

compact in the United States we would just call it a a small car here in the

UK we don't tend to use that word yes it's very strange yes so compact is

actually a word that describes any small car so under a certain size you would

describe a car as a compact whereas here in the UK we don't really have such a

term do we not really the mini that the mini is the the iconic small car or

compact and in the in the you in the UK and of course they're sold all around

the world now but yes that's a that's a popular retro well you would also

describe that as a car with retro styling okay because that's the that's a

Fiat colour that the modern interpretation of a 1950s Fiat and you

would describe it as a retro car it's something that looks and in his style

from something from from many years ago yes so it's a retro look just very

popular the Fiat won 2-6 I think okay then we're not really talking about

manufacturers today we're talking about the the type of car as in the shape and

characteristics we're not here to advertise cars so another one Steve sit

down or that's what they call it in America we would say saloon car that's

it in the UK so yes a sedan it's it's it's normally quite long and elegant

looking isn't it it's just standard three box saloon so that's what they

describe it I say you've got you've got four doors

a proper boot but it could be a hatchback as well but that's your

standard what they call a three box saloon car say you've got four doors a

an obvious bonnet and an obvious boot hmm and it's just a very practical car

for carrying families around for decades they're not so popular now this class of

car is not as popular as it was that the typical saloon or sedan car and far less

popular another example of a Ford Mondeo for example would be a typically typical

example of a sedan or a saloon car and as I say they're not so popular now as

people have have gone for more modern versions of the car but the the saloon

or sedan car is a car that fulfills a purpose of carrying you know up to five

people around their luggage it's a tried and trusted type of car and it works

very well yes and but they've fallen out of favor now because people are going

for types of car that you'll no doubt bring bringing up mr. Duncan yes in

other pictures when we see them so we had we had sedan and here's the next one

I think you will recognize this that's a coupe eh that's a nice Alexis that one

mr. Duncan I have to say what they are now you don't want me to but I have to I

have to say what it is when it got in the screen you know you know if Lexus

and Fiat was sending money to us we would be more than happy to mention the

names of their cars again and again and I'm going to mention other ones a Ford

Mustang would be another example of course a coupe a usually two doors with

a kind of a hatch at the back to put the boot in long bonnet everybody recognizes

that the typical teardrop shaped sports car yes so thank you was do them every

manufacturer has one there rain that's it so you normally

find that it looks like it hasn't got much space for the passengers because it

slopes quite heavily at the back so it has a very distinctive shape doesn't it

well you might have rear seats but there'd be very small yeah and it's got

that sort of that's a typical fastback look so he's got that slope he's sort of

from there from the roof going towards the back of the car they call that a

fastback look well your your spider friend has a coupe eh that's right

there's more they're stylish often they're just saloon cars that they often

make them from the saloon car in the right in the range and just put fit two

doors and and a slopey boot there if you don't have a family

and you want to look stylish then you will buy yourself a coupe eh yes I I

always think the coupe a is is a single man car yes single man and a coupe a of

course specifically means a two-door car with a roof as opposed to a soft top

which you would it would not have a roof on it so the coupe a specifically refers

to the fact that it's got a hard roof yes and in American English they call it

a coupe right so literally literally like an enclosed space like a chicken

coop yes that's it so he's got the specific the specific thing is it's got

to have two doors it's got to have a hard fixed roof yep another one let's

have a look at the next one ah so Steve mentioned this earlier saloon now I

think maybe in the past Steve this was the most common car on the road this

type of car the saloon yes like the sedan we had that before didn't we I

think they mean one and the same they are so in the UK we call it a saloon

it's four doors boot obvious engine at the front you know the usual thing is

for for carrying four or five people and their luggage actually the name

the car refers to the fact that the the seating area and the storage area are

actually separate so it's like sitting in maybe like a pub or a bar you are in

the saloon so it's it's an enclosed area so yeah the boot is separate the luggage

compartment is separate from the rest of the car that looks like a Beemer yeah

that looks like a 3-series a very ubiquitous car now it's very expensive

yeah and the other thing to mention about BMW Steve is that they really had

a very bad reputation didn't there years ago in the 80s if you had a BMW you were

you were quite a unpleasant maybe a show-off or pretentious or maybe a

person that always liked to show their wealth to other people but but nowadays

BMW has quite a classy characteristic doesn't it yes it sheds some of its

negative image it's still seen as a bit of a boy racers car you choose a BMW if

you if you ever be in EE you're making a statement that says I'm buying a quality

German car it's more expensive than the average car but I I'm I'm a go-getter

I'm racing around at high speed get out of my way that is still the image of a

BMW very much because you can buy lots of differences I mean for example if you

bought a Ford Mondeo or a 3-series or a fire if you've got the BMW you're making

a statement you're saying okay I can afford a more expensive car

than the average person and I've got a really dynamic job and I'm going for the

top that's what you're saying if you buy a BMW that which is why mostly they're

driven very aggressively on the road yes but certainly in the past they used to

have a very bad reputation okay here comes another car Steve yeah the comment

I'd like to make okay quickly is that people often buy cars because of their

image but they've seen in adverts but once you've got that car you almost have

to live up to that image even if you don't really want to so I think

sometimes people that bike BMW's it was seen as boy racer cars they

have to almost or if you buy a car with a big engine in it you or a sporty

little hatchback with that with a powerful engine you've almost got to

drive it in the way in that way otherwise you're gonna look a bit silly

so I think sometimes they force you into driving in a particular style even if

you don't necessarily want to so the car influences the way you behave on the

road I think hmm yes that is strange you just just as they say you are what you

eat maybe also you are what you drive I think you are I think you morph into

whatever car you drive you probably buy that car because you think because all

different makes of cars and styles have a certain character about them yes or

status or status or character and by buying that car you identify with that

with that with the type of car that is and of course the advertisers will very

much try to influence you because they all want their cars to be seen as sporty

and dynamic the last thing a manufacturer wants is to sell a car

based on on the fact that it's safe the only car that gets away with that is

Volvo anyway but here we okay mr. Duncan we have eleven minutes you have eleven

minutes and thirty eight cars still to look at so thirty-eight it's gonna be

very quick so here's another one this now this is a common car on the road I

think you see a lot of these on the road nowadays it's a hatchback a hatchback

now yeah now small cars can be hatchbacks so this

is not necessarily referring to the size of car but also the fact that it has a

big door at the back in which you can load things into the car also there

isn't an enclosed space so where you sit and where you store things is relatively

the same space that's right there's no there's

hard physical separation between the the backseats and where you store your

luggage but there might be a flimsy cover but you could literally probably

reach from the back seats into the boot hmm and of course they've become very

popular they started off I think in in in Europe as in small cars they're just

very they're just very practical because you can you can fit more into the boot

into the back you can lower the rear seats they're very flexible in terms of

what you can carry around in actually that's one of the things I love about

hatchbacks there they're almost magic because you can you can bring the back

seats down and then suddenly you have loads of space at the back so hatchbacks

small hatchback cars are actually quite deceptive I think I think that they're

actually larger on the inside than you realize yes you can you can carry a lot

it not they didn't they took a long time to be popular in in America and I don't

think they're particularly popular now people still prefer and I think in China

they prefer this traditional saloon a hatchback the problem of the hatchback

is it's got particularly a little in a larger car and hatchbacks are now

popular enlarges sort of cars four-door saloon cars can be a hatchback now and

they they quite often are in fact the the Ford Mondeo for example I don't

think I think it's only available as a hatchback now because particularly in

this country and in Europe because they're just more practical but they've

got a they're seen as having a lower status hmm as a saloon car a saloon car

cars are all about status and the saloon car scene is having more status yes and

a hatchback but they are very convenient cars quite lightweight and and I think

in this country very popular would you like to have a look at another car while

mr. Duncan I think Steve is not going to be very happy about the next one oh dear

SUV now Steve has a strong dislike of SUV vehicles

sport utility vehicle you don't like them do you Steve well having the word

sport at the front of it is it's completely misleading because they are

anything but sporty and they are certainly not sporty yet they just

they're just big jacked up versions of saloon cars yeah they've got a hatchback

at the back but I don't think you call it yes it's it would be a hatch but

they're they're just much higher off the ground hmm they're there they're

designed to to make people feel as though they can go anywhere yes so

four-wheel drive is very common in these sorts of cars they're much higher off

the ground yes of course they're and they're designed to be intimidating on

the road so if you drive drive one of these you're higher up above everybody

else Range Rover was that was the first has been very successful in in promoting

this style of car of course when it comes to environmental efficiency

they're they're absolutely dreadful because they're they're much heavier

than the saloon cars on which they're based the far less fuel-efficient

because they're there they cut a much larger profile going through through the

air you know and they they I I just hate people that drive them yeah but I hate

they're pointless cars utterly pointless on the road okay but there you go I

think they should be banned yes of course a lot of people are talking about

environmental issues I wonder I wonder what car Sir David Attenborough

drives you never hear these things you never find out which car or what car

so David Attenborough drives I bet he drives a great big rolls-royce and just

doesn't tell anyone yet they're always talking about all we've got to have

electric cars and we've got to save the planet we've got to we've got to get rid

of diesel cast the one thing that that they could do overnight

which would which would increase the fuel consumption of most cars and

generally will be to ban SUVs hmm because their fuel consumption is about

20% worse than the average saloon car yes because babb an SUV and suddenly

fuel consumption generally will go up yeah

okay Steve you can tell that Steve likes this subject well I had one last week

you did my car needed some repairs mhm and they gave me they gave me this this

SUV which was I won't say what it was but it was said that was what they got

has occurred as he can it was an SUV a medium sized SUV it was uncomfortable

and I've driven the saloon car on which it's based

it was bounced all over the road I could couldn't get more than about 38 miles to

the gallon out of it no matter how gently I drove that I should have been

out to get at least 50 out of it but I couldn't because it was probably 200

kilograms more it was awkward to get in and out of you had to sort of climb into

it there was this big seal that you had to sort of step over to get into the car

that's completely why anyone buys them I have no idea literally because cuz i

iost lee ugly thing okay Steve the other thing SUVs are just ugly yeah okay I

think you've said that already so su SUVs a big heavy cars late so so the

heavier the car gets the more energy it has to use to move around it does seem

like a strange paradox actually it's the biggest single factor involved in fuel

consumption is weight yes but I wonder I wonder what car Sir David Attenborough

drives or anything about Sir David Attenborough and if people know who he

is well every time I turn my TV on I've got

Sir David Attenborough barking barking at me like a like a rabid dog telling me

to stop destroying the planet and I'm not I'm not destroying the planet that

Sir David Attenborough is a botanist a naturist is it naturist or naturalist

I think it's naturalist a naturist is a person

walks around naked so he is a naturalist very famous here in the UK often talks

about environmental issues I think he's about how old is he now he's is he 90 91

I mean it's popular in the UK I think a lot of but he's made some brilliant TV

shows such as blue planet and that's that's famous around the world the

naturalist isn't natural that's it he's interested in nature talks about it

but at the moment he constantly comes on television telling us all that we're

destroying the world but I'm not you I understood the planet when it comes to

cars I'm not destroying it by by a lightweight car I don't keep it for 20

years yes we don't need you to start we've got how many factors won't promote

that okay yes the roads also many car Steve Steve yes mister I'm trying to be

nice to you here but we only have for two minutes okay and I've got other

words to get through as well yeah that's the point I'm making there so yes David

ah there you go that's an old mg oh I used to have one of those you used to

have that that exact same style of car is that the midget it is that's an MG

Midget I have one of those unbelievably small car by modern standards strictly a

two-seater but it's a soft top so you would call that so the difference

between a coupe ain't a soft top is that the soft top obviously has it has a roof

that you can take down hmm so it is soft top soft top

that means the whole roof comes down so yes nice and a nice summer's day I also

love my MG Midget it was so exciting to drive at any speed it was so crude it

was such a crude car that you you got a lot of excitement driving it even at

ordinary speeds very basic whereas modern cars now you have to drive them

pretty fast before you get any thrills out of them where's those old cars

that's probably 19th I would imagine that was probably made in the 1970s

because he's got a rubber bumper on it that's I think this is a 1974 model yes

but is this the car you had your accident in no no okay then that's good

then because I wouldn't like to have a car crash in that because I don't think

you would survive it was a triumph tr7 a coupe a okie-dokie we haven't got one of

those to show you another one oh so when we talk about classic cars what what are

we talking about there Steve well we're normally talking about old cars mm-hmm

cars from the classic cars are typically cars I would say probably from it

depends on what the cutoff period is a classic car is normally a car from I

would say before nineteen sixties nineteen sixties nineteen thirties

forties fifties sixties well there weren't many cars before then whether

well but yeah that's what you normally refer to as a classic kind of older car

that's from yeah I mean you wouldn't describe a car from the nine you could

describe a car from the 1980s as a classic car possibly yeah but usually

it's got to have a bit of status to it as well so a car that was wasn't

particularly interesting when it was made at the time even if it was 50 years

old you wouldn't describe it as a classic car it's got to be something

that hasn't had a bit of status or maybe an iconic sort of symbolism about it so

there's a typical classic car an mg yes it's a classic sports car

it's a typical you could you use the word typical to replace classic that's

it doesn't have to mean old but it usually does yes but that that is

actually a nice car you might notice today by the way all the cars that I'm

featuring are red yeah somebody else is noticed and mr. Steve is also wearing

his red sports car top so you look very very sort of how many cylinders are

you're firing on today Steve De Palma did I have to start off with I'm not

sure maybe maybe if I had four I'm firing on three cylinders okay and a

state car mr. Duncan state estate again I always remember growing up and certain

cars on the road always stood out more than others

and the one that I always remember seeing during my childhood was the Volvo

estate and that one there is an a Volvo a classic Volvo and look at the size of

it it's huge I think they invented the estate car

Volvo yes it's basically again a saloon car but they stick that great big back

on it just for practical reasons that's amazing and of course calling it an

estate they've there again an estate car particularly in the UK has got a status

associated with it if you've got an estate car then it means that you're

you've probably got a large estate that's what it's actually

they call it in a state car because you've got a large you've got acres of

ground a great big house and you're carrying all your antiques around in the

back of the car yes it's giving you a status if you

drive around you may not ever have to carry anything that people used to buy

these types of cars because it gave them status so saying look I'm carrying

expensive things around you probably antiques from one of my houses to

another okay so it gave you the impression it would cost you more money

the companies made more money out of it and it was just fueling or sometimes

people bought them for practical reasons usually they didn't that's it so the

estate actually just refers to the fact you've got a lot of space to to store

things and a lot of space to use another one so this is actually the American

version of the estate a nation wagon they called it station wagon so a

station wagon tends to be a very long car once more just like the estate it

has a lot of room in the back lots of storage room and and that particular car

look at that that's a very classic American car i I think if I wonder if

Jeff is here today as a teen Jeff today he was on earlier but he seems to have

disappeared so that is a classic a classic American station wagon so we

call that a station wagon in American English and we refer to that type of car

as an estate so I think that's quite helpful we are running out of time in

fact we've run out of time but we will carry on a little bit longer pick up a

very useful vehicle you can put things on the back of this it is like a little

vehicle that you can use to carry heavy objects around would you say that's

right a pickup truck you can just easily pick things up and throw them in the

back it's it's almost self-explanatory its self-explanatory you don't you're

not going to worry too much about security but maybe

you just throw your dog in the back or some logs or bits of equipment if you're

on a farm or you're going out somewhere to do something practical and you need

to carry equipment around or heavy loads logs or something like that then you can

it's easily easy to put things in it it's not it's not going to mess your car

up too much apparently apparently Steve that the ladies are getting upset

because they're saying that this subject is very boring oh well we better we

we're being politically correct you see because of course women and men enjoy

cars equally there is no difference everything is equal in 2019 so so this

conversation should be interesting to everyone be politically correct yes it

that's the Lewis is talking about a way of measuring fuel consumption they're

not the continent when we say the content we mean most of Europe they use

the measure how many liters of fuel do you use in a hundred kilometers but we

say miles per gallon here in the UK and they do in the States as well how many

miles you get from a gallon of fuel whereas it's the other way round on the

continent they're saying how many liters do you need to go a certain distance

it's a different way of measuring it different way of measuring but yes

Lewis is presumably saying that that uses a lot of fuel yes please

fleet let's not confuse things because I don't know the difference between liters

and gallons I get come don't don't start talking about measurement Oh trying to

America and on the continent ooh probably most of the rest of the world
