you happy i hope so i've had a busy 10 minutes i've been trying to solve my rubik cube and

look i've done it aren't i clever isn't that amazing it only took me 10 minutes to do this

going to go onto the internet and i'm going to go to youtube and i'm going to find something

complaining we complain about everything just me if there is one characteristic of the english

man or english lady it is their ability to complain about almost everything the weather

the buses the trains their neighbours their pet their husband their wife

maybe they don't have enough clothes to wear maybe you want something new and you can't

afford to buy it perhaps you will complain about it maybe you will complain because you

want something that you can't have and you keep complaining oh it's not fair it's not

fair i want it i want it now we live in an age where people want things straight away

this is the age of instant gratification oh mr duncan that is an interesting word gratification

if you have gratification it is pleasure it is pleasure that you are receiving or you

are feeling the pleasure from an experience that you are having self gratification you

do something steady steady no we will have none of that can you please keep your thoughts

pure self-gratification you gratify yourself by buying something new or maybe doing something

that gives you pleasure no stop it i know what you're doing out there please stop those

the mountain and i really can't complain that sounds wonderful do you know people are taking

up outdoor activities more and more and i think one activity that people are doing more

is cycling cycling has become very popular because it is something you can do by yourself

outside and of course you can stay away from other people so if you are cycling you are

moving all the time and you are getting lots of fresh air cycling has become quite popular

is when people talk about modern technology things like mobile phones or or tablet devices

and they always say oh my phone my phone is so slow when i want to open a picture or watch

a video on my phone my phone is so slow it takes it takes 10 seconds to open the photograph

as if they are having to wait forever 10 seconds is nothing and yet people complain about it

they say oh my phone is slow oh it takes it takes nearly 10 seconds to open my photographs

oh it's so slow 10 seconds this is not slow it's quick it's amazing it's incredible try

and imagine what it was like being on the internet in 1999 i was using the internet

in 1999 and can i just say it was terrible you because we only had about 56 kilobytes

of speed and you had to dial on your phone to use the internet

i used to do that and then you would have to wait for ages before it connected

you couldn't play videos it used to take ages for a photograph to open on the computer screen

do you remember that are you one of the early users of the internet it would take about

five minutes to open a photograph and you would have to go away and then come back and

then the photograph would still be opening very slowly who remembers the early days of

the internet oh wasn't it fun

before youtube before facebook before twitter before everyone started tearing each other's

hair and eyes out arguing over everything the early days of the internet was a wonderful

place even though everything was very slow it used to take a very long time for things

to happen on the internet so today we are talking all about

i've just noticed something it's starting to snow outside oh yes i think it is trying

to snow is that snow i think it is it's either snow or it's my eyebrow dandruff because i

have terrible eyebrow dandruff i was talking about this the other day so is that snow you

can see or is it my dandruff falling in front of my eyes from my eyebrows i don't know yes

what that deserves i think that deserves a fancy pants

to make and there are many words many phrases many ways of describing a person and also

the action of complaining and as i said earlier no one enjoys complaining more than the english

we complain about everything in the winter we complain that it's too cold in the summer

we complain that it's too hot when we go on holiday we complain that the weather is too

dry and the food is not the same as the food that you get back home we always complain

about things we always do especially when we go abroad english people and quite often

i suppose british people complain all the time when they go abroad i think so so yes

it's true we do like to complain here in england

this but it is an interesting subject the early days of the internet do you remember

the early days of the internet when you had to connect your computer to your telephone

line and it would take ages for anything to happen and you're right valentin says just

the internet so i remember when people started getting computers in their houses and suddenly

it seemed like a whole revolution was taking place suddenly we could we could just find

do complain a lot we like to complain when we go out maybe we go to a restaurant and

all about making complaints and then after this we will look at some phrases some words

connected to complaining

you know the world of english is a fun and exciting place to be i'm so glad you could

you happy i hope so in this lesson we will look at a common social action that most of

us will find ourselves doing from time to time making

a complaint

hmm

the word complaint is a noun and means a statement that is made concerning something which is

unsatisfactory or not to your liking you say that you are not happy about the quality of

something you show your disappointment verbally there are many words connected to complaint

or complain such as criticize gripe grumble object moan protest whimper and whinge

excuse me a moment i'm a little thirsty

that hit the spot when you complain to someone we say that you make a complaint you put forward

your complaint you draw attention to a problem you have found a fault you show your dissatisfaction

there are two ways of making a complaint you can make it in a nice way or you can make

it in a rude way

meal sent to me instead

i have found a fault with this shirt could i please replace it with another one

i'm not happy with the cable tv service you are providing i would like to have it disconnected

look at this shirt it's rubbish how can you sell this junk this cable tv service of yours

is awful i hate it come and take it away

when a person complains in a rude way we can say that they create a fuss kick up a storm

make a scene cause a commotion protest out loud blow the whole thing out of

ooh proportion what i've just found on the floor broccoli do you like broccoli it is

always best to make a complaint in a calm and polite way as being rude will only make

the situation much worse and you could find yourself with a much larger and more serious

problem to deal with

after making the complaint you will normally receive an instant response especially if

you are making it directly in front of the other person of course if you are making the

complaint in writing then you may have to wait for a long time before your complaint

is handled or resolved

when you receive a complaint you will usually deal with it or handle it as quickly as possible

you want to make the complaint go away you wish to resolve the complaint you would like

to put the problem right you try to placate the person making the complaint

for example oh i am so sorry about that please allow me to bring you another meal oh i'm

terribly sorry i will fetch you a new shirt from our stockroom right now i'm sorry to

hear that you are not happy with our cable tv service maybe we can offer you some different

channels instead

we can also make a general complaint about things around us for example the weather oh

it's too cold today i really do not like winter we can complain about our job oh my boss makes

me work too hard i need a holiday you can even make a complaint about yourself oh i

really hate my nose it's far too long

you can never find the end of this there is another definition of the word complaint that

means you have an illness or you feel sick and unwell normally relating to a certain

part of the body for example a stomach complaint or an ear complaint i think you should go

and see a doctor

making a complaint is a normal occurrence and happens very often but it is best not

to complain too much about things or you may find yourself being called names such as old

winger nit-picker or moaning mini sadly i have to leave you now but please do not complain

because i will see you all again very soon i promise this is mr duncan in england saying

and one thing that we like to complain about here in england is the weather we are always

moaning and complaining but what about you do you like to complain do you like to make

complaints do you like to moan about things so that's what we're talking about today we

are talking about complain the subject complain you complain you protest about something something

you find objectionable something you don't like you can describe as a complaint so today

we are looking at making complaints you might make a complaint against someone so i might

make a complaint against my neighbour

you might lodge a complaint lodge that's interesting so if you put forward something if you make

a complaint we can say that you lodge a complaint so if the complaint is lodged it means it

is also recorded maybe someone will write the complaint down or maybe you will send

a letter to someone lodging a complaint so you are putting your complaint forward and

we often describe that as lodging your complaint here's another word quite often if a person

likes to complain we say they moan

oh it's not fair oh oh i hate going to work oh why do i have to go to my my grandparents

house today i want to just stay in bed oh why do i have to do a live stream on youtube

i don't want to i want to just stay in bed and relax moan so if you complain we can say

that you moan about things moan another word we can use is whinge whinge i like that word

if you whinge about something it means that you complain you always complain about something

you always whinge you always go on and on complaining about something oh it's not fair

oh i don't want to go to work today oh my boss is always mean to me why does my boss

always pick on me oh oh i don't like my work colleagues they are so annoying oh oh my wife

last night she kept whinging complaining and moaning about all of her friends and their

new new outfits and their new clothes

here's another word you complain you whinge you moan you bleat

interesting you bleat like a sheep

so you bleat you are constantly complaining about things i made myself laugh then that

doesn't happen very often so if you bleat it means you moan you complain you make a

fuss about what is going on around you or something that's happening in your life here's

another one grumble grumble you grumble about things you complain we often think that people

over a certain age like to grumble and i suppose so yes people will complain they will grumble

with each other they will grumble quite often we think of elderly people always grumbling

young children today young people oh they're so rude oh i was on the bus the other day

and there was this young man sitting near me and he was listening to his radio he had

his radio and it was playing very loud music very noisy you grumble about things general

complaints we can say that you grumble here's an interesting one belly ache if you bellyache

to bellyache is to complain moan grumble bleat whinge you bellyache about something it means

you go on and on complaining and moaning about the same thing you bellyache oh i like this

one so this word is very interesting because when a baby a newborn baby or a very young

baby and let's face it i've never met an elderly baby i've only ever met young babies

but a baby when when its teeth start to come through it will start crying a lot it will

always cry

we can say that that baby is griping griping so when a baby keeps crying maybe its teeth

are starting to come through and it can be quite painful for the baby if they are teething

they will gripe or maybe they have a bad stomach maybe they have a bad stomach maybe their

stomach is hurting and the baby is not very happy about the situation they will gripe

and also a person an adult can also gripe about things as well

here's another one we're talking about complaining a person that complains they bemoan oh now

this is a rather fancy word i must say very nice bemoan if you bemoan something it means

you are criticizing it you are complaining about it you are making complaints or you

are complaining about one particular thing

you might oh i like these words nag nag

if you nag it means you complain you always complain maybe you will nag your husband or

perhaps your husband will nag you nag you constantly complain about something quite

often one particular thing so perhaps perhaps your husband came home from a night out very

late and when he gets home you say what time do you call this what time do you call this

it's two o'clock in the morning where have you been have you been out with your friends

again and we say that that person is nagging nag something that won't stop complaining

something that won't stop saying things criticizing moaning whinging

grumbling griping you nag someone we could also use the word harris as well or harass

harris harass you nag you harass someone you complain all the time to them about something

berate oh now this is an interesting word if you berate someone it means also that you

complain to them you always complain about something you berate that person i suppose

a similar word we can use is criticize you criticize someone you are always finding something

to complain about maybe about an individual or a person you will complain you will criticize

oh you always look so scruffy oh i don't like the way you look today your clothes they look

old and i think you smell as well you are complaining about that person complaining

about their behaviour or their appearance you criticize someone or something

a person that does this might be described as a moaning mini oh please stop complaining

you are such a moaning mini a moaning mini is a person who won't stop complaining they

are always complaining about things of course there are two types of complaint there is

a complaint that might be justified can you see the word there justified so when we say

justified it means that thing is reasonable it is something that can be accepted it is

an acceptable thing it is justified you will accept that complaint because you think it

is reasonable that is a reasonable complaint your complaint seems fair it is justified

so a complaint can be justified it means that you have the right to complain about that

thing you do and then we have the opposite which is unjustified so if something is unjustified

it means it is unfair you are complaining about something unfairly it is unjustified

it is not acceptable it is a complaint that can't be accepted

here's another one you might be described as a fussy person a person who is fussy you

might be sitting in a restaurant as you saw earlier in my video clip you might be sitting

in a restaurant and you might be very fussy about the food some people are very fussy

about certain things they are fussy about their clothes they are fussy about the things

they eat they are fussy about the places they stay perhaps a hotel maybe they will constantly

complain about the hotel oh i'm sorry i have to make a complaint well when i went into

my room i noticed that there was a hair in the bed

that happened to me once i stayed at a hotel once and when i i pulled the sheets back on

the bed there was a hair there was a there was a hair

it wasn't straight

did i complain no i didn't i just brushed it away and jumped in so no problem

do not complain too much or else you might be described as a fussy person a person who

is always complaining is fussy perhaps you will describe that person as picky so if a

person is picky it means they are very fussy they will choose things very carefully they

are very fussy about what they like the things that they like and if you give them something

they don't like they will complain they will make a big complaint they will make a fuss

about it a picky person is a person who complains about things they are very fussy very particular

you might say that someone who likes to complain is not easily pleased some people are have

you ever met someone who always complains as i mentioned earlier i have been to restaurants

with friends

i'm not saying who but i remember a few years ago mr steve and myself we went out with a

couple of friends

and they were the fussiest people i've ever known so this was the first time we actually

went out for a meal with these friends we knew them but we'd never been for a meal with

them and we couldn't believe how often they complained about the food they kept sending

everything back it was so embarrassing no no no what's this oh no no i'm sorry no no

oh oh no this is terrible oh no this this meat is awful now i'm sending it back uh waiter

waiter please i'm sorry what's this i asked for medium rare but this steak is well done

i don't want a well done steak i want my steak medium rare please send it back send it back

i don't like it

not easily pleased you might also say that that person is not easy to please it is not

easy to please them it is very hard to make them happy it is hard to satisfy them quite

often in relationships some people complain that their partner is very fussy and it can

happen quite often you might say that nothing is ever good enough sometimes whatever you

do whatever you say if you try to do the right thing if you try to to make changes that are

better nothing is ever good enough for some people some people will always make complaints

they will always complain whatever the situation and whatever is happening and there it was

today's topic complaining do you like to complain have you ever complained about anything have

you ever made a fuss maybe you've stayed at a hotel

and you've had a similar problem to me you see or maybe you've stayed in a hotel and

maybe the towels in the bathroom were dirty or maybe the toilet hadn't been cleaned properly

you see

there were some pigeons fighting in the snow just it was very embarrassing very embarrassing

moments of time you are right yes it is possible to have all sorts of embarrassing situations

going to lie how is your biscuit oh yes i still have my

chocolate biscuit for those asking i have a chocolate biscuit and this is the chocolate

this is my biscuit i've been eating this biscuit for the past 12 days and today is day 13.

it it's snowing outside at the moment on a saturday afternoon and you can see there is

a little pigeon sitting in the tree it doesn't look very happy i think that pigeon is probably
