English Grammar - "I used to" & "I'm used to"

Hi, James from www.invid.com, I'm having a small problem here, you see, I'm used to standing

over here, okay, I'm very used to doing that, so I used to stand over there but now I'm

going to stand over here, and I'm not used to it, and I said a couple of things here

and you might get a little confused and go, "What the hell is he talking about?"

Let's go to the board and I'll tell you.

Many students are confused by this, like that's the same, so what's the difference, right?

I used to, I'm used to, they even almost sound the same, it's kind of crazy, in fact when

we speak, we speak too quickly and people get confused even more, I'm going to break

it down for you today so you can understand what these mean, or what they mean.

First of all, we use this but they don't mean the exact same thing, okay, now I used to

do something is the past.

I'm used to, and here's the confusing part, I'll explain, D and T in English are very

confusing because when they get close together they blend into one and it's hard to tell

the difference, but I'm used to cooking my own dinner actually means it's not new, or

not strange, okay, to me.

So in this case, I'm used to doing something, I'm just saying it's not the first time I've

done it, it's not new to me, it's not very strange.

used to, and then infinitive, verb in the base.

And by saying this, what I mean is, literally, in the past, I did, see, past, it regularly,

but not anymore, okay, so let me read it, oops, watch out, capitalization, period, okay?

So subject plus used to and verb in the base, in the past I did it regularly, but not anymore.

So let's get the sentence, shall we, I'll put this up here, I'm happy, Ezekiel was here,

Okay, so used to, okay, we'll just put that up here, used to, so we'll say, I used to

wear ladies' underwear, it was a little tight, tighten the button, so I don't do it anymore,

to be, what does the verb to be used to do, what do we use it for?

I'm used to, what, well, we're going to have ing, right, continuous form.

I'm used to living alone, I'm used to cooking my own food, I'm used to working in the dark,

so we go from here, we make it like the continuous form.

So I'm used to, and then verb ing, and we've got wearing ladies underwear, it's not unusual

for me, I'm used to that noise.

Now we don't have to always have ing, right, we can have something else, we can have noise

as being a noun, I'm used to the noise, I'm used to the heat, I'm used to the temperature,

I'm used to working late.

So we can change this, it doesn't have to be this, I'm sorry, that's the other one,

it doesn't have to be the verb in the base, ok?

Verb in the base plus just used to is equal to past, something I used to do and no longer

do it.

When we have this one, all we have to remember is add the verb to be and it is something

I'm doing in the present.

We can use an ing, we can use a noun, whatever follows after, ok?

So in this particular case, we're saying I am used to something I do, oh, let's change

it because this is no longer true, is it?

So it says here, we're going to change it, because now we're saying I am used to, it

is not new or strange to me, ok?

So we've got I used to, past, we've got I am used to, something that is not new or strange

to me.

These are often confused, now you know the difference, ok?
