Pronunciation - 3 Mistakes part 1 ('s')

Hi, I'm James, and today I'd like to talk to you about some of the hardest lessons for

students to learn, and these are actually letters that students either forget or don't

use properly.

Now, for us English speaking people, these letters give us a lot of information, so to

not use them actually can change the contents or the message you're trying to tell people.

So why don't we go to the board and start, okay?

Come on.

Alright, today's lesson will be with the letters S, T, and D, plus TH.

Many students know TH is very difficult to say, it's a very English thing to do.

But why ST and D?

Well, first off, in Canada, STDs are very bad things.

Let me show you.

S is for sexually, T is for transmitted, and D is for disease.

By the way, when I finish with this lesson, you'll never forget, and you can even teach

your friends.

Okay?

So, you don't want to get a sexually transmitted disease, very bad thing.

You also don't want to forget to use your S, your T, and your D, right?

Okay.

So, why not?

Well, let's figure it out.

I'll start off with the letter S. S I like to refer to as P3.

Why P3?

Well, the information you get from S has three different P's.

First one.

Present verbs.

When we use present verbs with a third person singular, we use S on the end of the verb

to indicate it is the third person singular.

In case you don't know what the third person singular is, it is he, she, and it.

Okay?

So that's reason number one.

When you don't add it to a third person singular verb, we don't know it's actually a present

verb.

Okay?

Let's look at reason number two.

I'm James, and this is James's pen.

Like that, 3-D.

James's pen.

Okay.

Sorry.

Sense of humor.

So, number two is for possession.

See all the S's inside for possession?

Don't forget.

Possession.

So, when something belongs to a person, we like to put that, their name, with the S to

indicate it belongs to them.

James's pen.

Okay?

So, James, my name, apostrophe S, shows possession, pen, James's pen.

Okay.

So, what's the third use for S on a word?

Let's find out.

Now, this is also for nouns.

As possession is for nouns, James, this one is also for nouns, but maybe I have one pen.

Two pens.

What's more?

You guessed it.

Three.

Now, I have three pens, pens, plural.

So, when we have plural nouns, okay, we like to add S to indicate that it is plural, more

than one.

Okay?

So, we have three conditions to add S to a word.

One, why don't you tell me?
