Can we use the have been doing tense in the negative?

For example can we say:

It has not been raining.

We don't often hear the Present Perfect Continuous tense in the negative form.

Não costumamos ouvir o tempo presente perfeito contínuo na forma negativa.

Also, we sometimes hear this tense 'have been doing' used for an action that has already stopped.

Além disso, às vezes ouvimos esse tempo verbal 'tem feito' usado para uma ação que já parou.

I know that that can be confusing.

So, in this lesson I'm going to clarify these two tricky points

Okay! Let's start the lesson by looking at  when we usually use the have been doing tense.

OK! Vamos começar a lição observando quando geralmente usamos o tempo verbal have been doing.

We use the Present Perfect Continuous for an action that started in the past and is still going on.

Usamos o Present Perfect Continuous para uma ação que começou no passado e ainda está acontecendo.

For example: It has been raining since Monday.

Por exemplo: está chovendo desde segunda-feira.

Or: It has been raining for three days.

Ou: Está chovendo há três dias.

Notice that there are two parts to this tense.

Observe que há duas partes neste tempo.

The first part is that the action started in the past.

A primeira parte é que a ação começou no passado.

And the second part is that the action is still going on.

E a segunda parte é que a ação ainda está acontecendo.

Okay! Let's remove the first part.

OK! Vamos remover a primeira parte.

Let's say that the action never started.

Digamos que a ação nunca tenha começado.

Now you would expect the opposite to be:

Agora você esperaria que fosse o contrário:

It has not been raining for three days.

não chove há três dias.

And grammatically that's a correct sentence.

E gramaticalmente é uma frase correta.

But it's illogical to use a continuous tense for an action that never started.

Mas é ilógico usar um tempo contínuo para uma ação que nunca começou.

So, generally speaking, we change the tense to the Present Perfect:

Então, de um modo geral, mudamos o tempo para o Present Perfect:

It has not rained for three days.

Não chove há três dias.

Right! Now let's remove part two.

Let's say that the action started in the past but no longer continues.

Digamos que a ação começou no passado, mas não continua mais.

So, what do we get when we say an action that started in the past and has already stopped.

Então, o que obtemos quando dizemos uma ação que começou no passado e já parou.

We get again the Present Perfect tense.

Recebemos novamente o tempo presente perfeito.

So, let's say that it started to rain on Monday and it stopped raining on Monday.

Então, digamos que começou a chover na segunda-feira e parou de chover na segunda-feira.

So, the tense becomes:

It has rained once since Monday.

So, when can we say 'have not been doing'?

Usually, when there's a suggestion that an action has been going on,

Normalmente, quando há uma sugestão de que uma ação está em andamento

and we want to insist that actually it hasn't,

e queremos insistir que na verdade não está

or that something else has been going on instead.

For example, someone asks you:

Has it been raining again?

And you can insist by saying:

No, it has not been raining. Actually, it has been very sunny.

Let me give you another example.

Someone says to you:

And you want to insist by saying:

Okay! That's point one.

Let me now tell you another tricky thing about the  Present Perfect Continuous tense.

We also use 'have been doing' for an action that has just stopped.

Também usamos 'have been doing' para uma ação que acabou de ser interrompida.

But its undesirable, its unwanted effect is still present.

Mas é indesejável, seu efeito indesejado ainda está presente.

For example, you stopped cleaning your shed a few minutes ago,

Por exemplo, você parou de limpar seu galpão há alguns minutos

and now you notice that your back hurts.

e agora percebe que suas costas doem.

In this situation, when the action has just stopped,

we continue to use the Present Perfect Continuous.

We say:

My back hurts because I've been cleaning the shed.

Minhas costas doem porque limpei o galpão.

So, you've stopped, but you stopped a few minutes ago.

Então, você parou, mas parou há alguns minutos.

And now you have this unwanted effect of your back hurting.

E agora você tem esse efeito indesejado de dor nas costas.

So, let me repeat the three facts.

Então, deixe-me repetir os três fatos.

The first one is that the action has just stopped. Not some time ago.

A primeira é que a ação acabou de parar. Não há algum tempo.

The second one is that there is an undesirable, unwanted effect.

O segundo é que há um efeito indesejável e indesejado.

And the third one is that you may or may not continue the action later.

E a terceira é que você pode ou não continuar a ação mais tarde.

Okay! So, let's see what happens if you remove fact 1.

For example, you finished cleaning the shed two hours ago.

In this case, we do not use the Present Perfect Continuous tense. Obviously not!

We use the Past Simple:

My back hurts now because I cleaned the shed earlier.

Let's remove fact 2.

That is the action has no unwanted or undesirable effect.

seja, a ação não tem efeito indesejado ou indesejável.

You've just stopped cleaning the shed and you're very pleased.

Você acabou de limpar o galpão e está muito satisfeito.

The tense we use again here is Present Perfect:

I've just cleaned the shed, now I can put all my tools in it.

Right! Let's put all of that together and look at a typical conversation.

Your hands are covered in paint! What have you been doing?

I've been decorating.

Oh! Alright! Is it all done?

Now remember fact three, the action may or may not continue.

So, we have two options here. Option 1:

Yes, I've just finished. It's all done.
