43 Advanced English Phrases in Under 4 Minutes (Romance, Dating & Flirting)

and today I am going to share a video

of David and Sarah at a hotel bar,

and I am going to teach you phrases related to romance.

So you can guess what happens in this story,

but basically I am going to tell a story of two people

and give you phrases such as check out, flirt,

glance, find someone attractive, et cetera.

To get the most out of this lesson,

watch the actual video two or three times.

Feel free to turn on subtitles

because I have added subtitles,

and then go into the description

to get the list of phrases that we have used.

There are 43 in total,

and about 30 of these are directly related to romance.

So, are you ready?

Let's go.

Our story starts with Sarah sitting

on her own at a hotel bar,

and she decides to order a refreshing cocktail.

Now, it's important to know

that Sarah has recently broken up

with her long-term boyfriend, which is sad,

and it's even sadder because she did so

because he didn't like her tattoo.

Now, also at the bar is a guy called David,

and David is, let's say a little bit of a player.

He likes to chat up women and go out on lots of dates,

and at the moment he is single too,

and he's just checking the football results on his phone

and having a beer on his own.

Now you can see that he starts to check out Sarah.

He likes what he sees.

He finds her very attractive.

He thinks that she's beautiful

and that she has this special aura about her.

He continues to check her out a little bit more

and to see if she's noticing him as well,

but she hasn't looked over once

and he's starting to get a little bit frustrated

and trying to build up the courage to go over to her,

and then finally he gets up out of his chair,

walks over to Sarah at the bar and makes his move.

He puts his beer next to Sarah at the bar,

and this is the first time that she has seen him

and she likes what she sees.

There is instant chemistry.

They flirt with each other straight away.

Although she's a little hesitant,

she starts to open up about what she does

and David asks her a lot of questions.

She shows him his tattoo.

She talks about how this tattoo caused the breakup

of her long-term relationship.

Although David is trying to act sad about the story,

he is internally very happy that she is single.

You notice that they are glancing at each other

and flirting a little bit more.

They go on to talk more about what they do,

and then David decides to order two shots,

one for him and one for Sarah.

The bartender puts the shots on the bar.

They raise their glasses, cheers.

David has his shot first.

Sarah notices that he downs it in one and she does the same.

After chatting some more,

Sarah tells David that she needs to go back to her room soon

to prepare for her presentation,

so David makes his move by handing over his phone

and asking Sarah to put her number in it.

She obliges, enters her number,

and David thinks about when he's going to text her next

before finally finishing his beer.

We're just going to discuss two of the phrases that we used,

and again, go to the description

to learn all the phrases from this lesson,

but the first one is

at first David was checking his phone,

so he was looking at his phone and checking his phone

for notifications and to check the football results.

So, that is one way to use check,

but he also checked Sarah out, to check someone out,

and this means to look at somebody

to see if they are attractive,

to check someone out, to look over at someone.

Now, I also use some phrases

to talk about how David perceives Sarah.

So, I said he likes what he sees.

So this is quite informal, to say he finds her attractive,

and then the next one was he finds her attractive,

which means he likes what he sees,

but you get the idea,

there are various ways that you can say this.

He thinks that she's beautiful, he likes her,

he likes what he sees, he finds her very attractive.
