Learn NATURAL English: most students make this mistake | How to use MAKE & LET correctly (+ quiz)

imagine you're the boss of a company and your  employee is sick she looks very sick to me what  

would you do if you have a big project to finish  today your employee is sick and you have a big  

project to finish today would you make them stay  make them stay and finish that project or would  

you let them go home are you a boss who would make  them stay or are you a boss who would let them go  

home so that they can recover what we have today  is this this great construction both using let  

and make and learning this construction is going  to help improve your English and you're going to  

be able to understand native speakers better  because we use this construction all the time  

and the grammar part of this is let or make plus  the object plus the base verb now like normal if  

grammar confuses you don't worry because you can  internalize these through sentences so if you said  

I let my employee go home it means that you allow  or give permission to someone to do something so  

you give permission to that employee to go home  you allow them to go home if I made my employee  

stay this means that you require someone to do  something they might not choose otherwise so  

to let object base verb or make object base verb  let's now look at some examples and go through all  

of these examples so that you fully understand  this construction before going through a quiz

the first one is make kids do their homework  so this is where you're forcing your children  

to do something so you force or require someone  to take an action make someone do their homework  

an example is I always make my kids do their  homework before dinner I always make my kids  

do their homework before dinner and she makes  her son do his homework right after school  

right after school and right after  school means straight away after

school another one with make is make employees  fill out forms so you insist someone completes  

this task the manager makes the employees  fill out forms every week the manager makes

the manager here is insisting that the workers  fill out forms or fill out tax documents now  

these next ones are a little bit more fun because  you're not really being super strong here you're  

always smiling when you say something this but  this is when you compel your friend to get you  

from somewhere make your friend pick you up for  example he made his girlfriend pick him up early  

for the conference so he made his girlfriend  pick him up early for the conference this kind  

of means that you convince your friend to  do something so you don't force them to do  

it but you convince your girlfriend or friend  to do something and another example is I might  

make my friends pick me up from the airport  I might make my friend pick me up from the

airport and another fun example make your  brother pay for dinner so you demand that  

someone covers a cost of something or you  convince them to do it so you might have  

this relationship where you say okay brother you  have to pay today you have to pay for dinner for  

example I'll make my brother pay for dinner  since I paid last time I got the last dinner  

I'll make my brother pay for dinner since I  paid last time and he made him pay for the  

glass he broke in the store now this one is  stronger because you can imagine your friend  

going into a store picking up a a glass  and then it breaks so the store owner says  

okay you have to pay for that glass he made  him pay for the glass he broke in the store

let's look at examples with let a good one  here is let your kid stay up late so you  

allow or give permission for someone to  do something I let my kids stay up late  

during the firework displays so every  year if there is a firework display or  

whenever there is a firework display I'll let  my kids stay up late and they never let their  

kids stay up late they are strict parents they  never let their kids stay up late they never  

give permission or allow their children to stay  up late the next one is let your friend borrow  

your phone so you permit someone to use your  belongings temporarily I let my friend borrow  

my phone when he's died which is really nice I  let my friend borrow my phone when he's died and  

in the negative he wouldn't let that guy borrow  his phone he wouldn't let that guy borrow his

phone now the boss before made employees  do something but you can also let your  

employees do something too so you can let your  employees leave early and you give that person  

or those people permission to leave sooner  than usual or stop work sooner than usual  

for example the boss lets employees leave  early on Fridays the boss lets employees  

leave early on Fridays and I decided to let my  employees leave early after the meeting it's a  

tough meeting everyone was tired I decided  to let my employees leave early after the

meeting and if you're feeling very generous  or if it's a good decision sometimes you can  

let your girlfriend or your friend or  your boyfriend your husband your wife  

choose a movie so you allow someone the  freedom to make that choice or decision  

because if you watch a movie together  someone has to decide what to watch or  

you have to decide together but I always let  my girlfriend choose the movie on our movie  

night I always let my girlfriend choose the  movie and he let her choose a restaurant this  

time after a bad experience last time  so he let her choose a restaurant this
